Boxing Preview: Tito Ortiz – Anderson Silva

Tomorrow night, Triller is back with a boxing event that will feature legends from the combat sports world. In the co-main event, two of the more decorated UFC champions in history will battle it out as Tito Ortiz (21-12-1 MMA) takes on Anderson Silva (34-11, 1 NC).

The two former champions will be competing in boxing which will be a first for Ortiz. While Silva has experience in this arena, Tito Ortiz will be stepping into the boxing ring for the first time in his combat sports career.

The last time we saw Ortiz compete was back in 2019 when he defeated former WWE star Alberto Del Rio in a MMA match. Prior to that, Ortiz knocked out a very old Chuck Liddell in their trilogy fight. Ortiz’s last legit win was his fight before that against Chael Sonnen.

Ortiz has been vocal with his frustrations with Silva regarding this boxing match. Silva made Ortiz commit to a weight of 195 pounds. While Ortiz ultimately agreed, he missed the mark by five pounds today. That said, the match will go on.

Anderson Silva was last seen just a few months ago when he took on former boxing world champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. Silva was a huge underdog but ended up outclassing Chavez Jr and cruising to a decision. Overall, Silva is now 2-1 in professional boxing.

Boxing Preview

This is such an interesting and somewhat bizarre matchup. On one hand, you can say that both men have competed in the light heavyweight division during their careers. They are both former UFC champions and they are the same age.

At the same time, Ortiz has never been known for his boxing skills. Ortiz made a career out of taking his opponents down, controlling them, and using great elbows to do damage.

In the boxing ring, he’s going to be completely relying on his hands. Anderson Silva is known as one of the greatest strikers in MMA history. Say what you want about the condition Chavez Jr was in, it’s a big deal that Silva defeated a former boxing world champion just months ago.

I don’t see any scenario where Tito Ortiz wins this matchup. I’m having a hard time believing Ortiz even lands a significant shot in this one. I see Silva putting it on him from start to finish and I expect a TKO finish in the middle rounds.

Rematch with Woodley or boxing someone else? What’s next for Jake Paul?

Over the weekend we saw a boxing match between Jake Paul (4-0) and former UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley (0-1). This was the first time that Paul was taking on someone who could actually hurt him in the ring.

Paul has completely changed his career and focused on boxing after building his brand on the internet. After he started out fighting non-fighters, in 2021, Paul has turned his attention to boxing mixed martial artists.

He started with Ben Askren earlier this year. Askren is a former world champion but was never known for his striking. In fact, he’s known for having some of the worst striking in all of MMA. Paul knocked him out in the first round.

Askren’s teammate, Tyron Woodley, was in his corner that night. Woodley and Paul started going back and forth. Woodley is someone who possesses knockout power and the striking speed to challenge Paul. To the surprise of many, a boxing match between the two was booked.

Woodley was the first person to really push Paul. You could tell throughout the boxing match on Saturday that Paul was more tentative. In the fourth round, the ropes saved Paul from getting dropped. However, Paul was effective in his boxing and ultimately secured a decision win.

What’s next for Jake Paul in boxing?

Tyron Woodley has come out after the boxing match and has been demanding an immediate rematch. Paul said that he would rematch Woodley if the former UFC champion got a tattoo saying, “I love Jake Paul.”

Woodley said he would, but I’m not sure either is happening. Paul sent out a cryptic tweet yesterday saying he was retired. I don’t believe that Jake Paul is retired from boxing and I do believe we are going to see him back in the ring.

That said, I don’t think it will be against Woodley and I think we will see a little break in between fights. Paul was rocked for the first time in his career and he looked to be having some conditioning issues in this last fight.

It was a learning experience for him and I think he will get better. Have to give Jake Paul credit and say what you want, but the kid knows enough about boxing to be effective. I’m not sure who’s next for him, but it’s not going to be a big step up in competition. Tommy Fury is still a name to watch out for.

Tyron Woodley wants immediate rematch after losing boxing match to Jake Paul

Last night we finally got to see the boxing matchup that the world was waiting on. Former UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley (0-1) made his debut in the boxing ring against celebrity turned boxer Jake Paul (4-0).

For the first time, we were going to see Paul tested against someone who can actually throw a punch. Through Paul’s first three matchups he took on a guy from the internet, a former NBA player and a former MMA champion.

He’s taken incremental steps up in competition along the way, but it’s worth noting that the MMA champion he fought was Ben Askren. Askren had arguably the worst striking of all time for a guy that won a world title in MMA.

Tyron Woodley was different. While Woodley’s base MMA skill is wrestling, the former champion knows how to throw and throw with power. Woodley’s biggest knock is his unwillingness to pull the trigger. He needed to be aggressive to win this boxing match with Jake Paul.

In spots last night, we saw Woodley get aggressive. The former champion rocked Paul in the fourth round and had it not been for the ropes, Paul would’ve been knocked down. However, the inactivity and gaps in time between big shots cost him the fight.

Will Woodley and Paul be boxing again?

Jake Paul wasn’t able to knock out Tyron Woodley, but he was able to outpoint him. Paul was effective given the way Woodley fought him and ultimately two of the three judges gave Paul the split decision victory.

Let me be clear, I didn’t think the boxing match should’ve been a split decision. Coming from someone who is the furthest thing from a Jake Paul fan, I can admit that I thought he won five or six rounds pretty clearly last night.

Woodley moved forward a lot, but in the art of boxing, he didn’t do nearly enough to win. I can see more of an argument to give Paul seven rounds than giving the fight to Tyron Woodley.

Woodley was adamant that he believed he won the fight. After the event, Woodley called for an immediate rematch. Paul seemed hesitant but said that if Woodley got a ‘I love Jake Paul’ tattoo, he’d do it. Woodley immediately agreed to the stipulation.

I’m not sure what the boxing event did in terms of PPV numbers, but I can promise you the rematch would do worse. Paul got the win and he should move on from here. He needs to look for ways to improve and look for that next step up in competition.

Woodley had his chance but his downfall is what it’s always been. He seemed stuck in neutral throughout the fight. Sure there were moments where he moved down hill, but for the most part, he was boxing at a neutral pace. I don’t see the rematch going any different.

Tonight we finally got to see the boxing match that we’ve been waiting months for. Internet celebrity turned boxer Jake Paul (3-0) took on former UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley (19-7-1 MMA).

This was Woodley’s first professional boxing match. The former UFC welterweight champion fought out his contract earlier this year when he fought Vicente Luque in March. Woodley lost the fight to Luque which was his fourth consecutive loss.

At the beginning of 2019, Woodley was building his legacy as one of the greatest welterweights of all time. Then he lost his title and proceeded to finish out his UFC career having lost four fights in a row.

Jake Paul made his professional boxing debut in 2020 when he fought another YouTuber. From there, he’s made incremental steps up in competition. He’s fought a YouTuber, a former NBA player, and a former MMA world champion.

That champion was Tyron Woodley’s close friend Ben Askren. Askren and Paul had a boxing match in April and it didn’t go well for Askren. Jake Paul knocked him out in the first round. The seed was planted that night for a Paul and Woodley boxing match.

Boxing Recap

Round 1

The boxing match started off with no touch of the gloves as Jake Paul was all business. Woodley opens the fight with a big right hand that misses the mark. T-Wood holding the center as Paul circles on the outside.

Jab to the body lands for Woodley. Paul steps forward with a nice right to the body. Jake Paul looks for a lead left hook that just misses the mark. Both men looking patient here halfway through the opening frame.

Double jab lands for Jake Paul. Paul back to work with the jab and he goes high and low with it. Nice combination from Paul who goes to the body then up top. Woodley looking a little tentative here in his boxing debut. The round comes to a close and it’s 1-0 Jake Paul after one.

Round 2

Entering the second round, I’m expecting to see Woodley be a little more aggressive here with his boxing. Woodley opens with a combination, but nothing big lands. Paul wings a big right hand that’s blocked by Woodley.

Woodley looks a little more aggressive here in the second as he’s chasing Paul down. Nice jab lands for Paul. Lead left hook finds it’s home for Jake Paul and Woodley counters with a straight to the body. Nice jab from T-Wood lands and Paul counters with a body shot.

Paul working exclusively off his jab in the final minute of the second round. Good combination from Jake Paul who lands up top and to the body. Woodley trying to get more aggressive, but nothing big landing. Two rounds into this boxing matchup and it’s 2-0 Jake Paul.

Round 3

Entering the third round and so far, Woodley hasn’t looked great in his boxing debut. Nice 1-2 lands for Jake Paul to start the action in the third. Woodley lands a nice 1-2 and he follows it up with a pretty good right hand over the top.

Paul counters with his own combination. Both men land counter left hooks as Paul circles on the outside. Woodley looking much more aggressive, but he’s appearing a bit frustrated in the third. Paul looks for a big uppercut and it just misses the mark.

Final minute here in the third round of this boxing match and it just appears that Jake Paul is a slight step ahead of T-Wood. Woodley lands a right hand just as the bell sounds. Much better third round for Woodley, but it’s still likely Jake Paul’s round.

Round 4

The punch Woodley landed at the end of the round was his biggest one of the fight. As we enter the fourth, Woodley is looking a little angry in his approach. Both men throwing with more power here to start the fourth round.

Lead left hook lands for Woodley and Paul counters with a combination. Nice body shot lands for Jake Paul. Beautiful combination lands for Paul who goes to the body then finishes with a nice left hook. Woodley plotting forward and tries to land a big shot along the ropes.

Big right hand for Woodley hurts Jake Paul. The ropes saved him from a knockdown there and Woodley is stalking him. Uppercut for Woodley lands and Woodley is going for it here. The bell sounds and the momentum has shifted here in this boxing matchup.

Round 5

Entering the fifth round of this boxing matchup and Woodley immediately takes the center and throws a big body shot. Paul opens with a double jab, but Woodley lands a big combination. Nice counter combo lands for Jake Paul that backs Woodley up.

Jab to the body lands for Paul and Woodley plots forward. Straight right hand lands for Woodley. The pace of Woodley slows as he tries to settles in. Paul circles on the outside but neither man is throwing much here.

Nice left hook lands for Paul and Woodley is talking to him here. Good jab lands for Jake Paul and Paul wings a big right hand that just misses. Another good combination lands from Jake Paul.

Round 6

Entering the sixth round and Woodley needs to regain momentum here in this boxing match. Woodley takes the center to start the sixth. He pushes Paul up against the ropes, but nothing big lands for either man in the exchange.

Jab and a right to the body lands for Jake Paul. Woodley reverting back to not being very aggressive here in the sixth and Paul is pulling away. Good combination lands for Jake Paul and a nice right hand follows it. Woodley not throwing anything here in the sixth round.

Paul pushes forward with a combination that just misses. Woodley is pressuring, but he’s not throwing and he eats a left hook and right straight from Paul. The round comes to a close and it’s another one for Jake Paul who is winning this boxing match 5-1.

Round 7

Woodley’s only hope to win this boxing match is a knockout as we enter the seventh. He opens with a right hand, but it misses the mark and the two clinch. Double jab from Jake Paul. Another jab lands for Paul. 1-2 from Woodley just misses the mark and Paul tries to counter but misses wildly.

Good check left hook from Woodley and both men exchange big shots after. Woodley looking better here in the seventh as he’s actually throwing, but he’s not landing the bombs he needs. Jab to the body from Jake Paul.

Another jab from Paul lands as Woodley tries to make his way on the inside. Nice left hand for Paul and he follows with another body shot. Big right hand lands for Paul and the round comes to a close. Entering the final round and Woodley has only won one round of this boxing match.

Round 8

Entering the final round and Woodley is going to need a miracle. Paul looking loose to start the final frame. Woodley tries to work his way in with his jab. Power shots thrown by both men but nothing big lands.

Good overhand right hand lands for Jake Paul. Halfway through the final frame and Woodley is looking for an opening. Big jab lands for Jake Paul. One minute left and Woodley is not doing enough here in the final round.

Paul eats a 1-2 from Woodley, but not a lot of sting on it. Good right straight for Woodley and Woodley is at least trying. Final ten seconds and Woodley throws a big shot that misses the mark as the final bell sounds. Jake Paul should get the victory here easily.

Boxing Preview: Who will win?

Part of me is still amazed that this boxing match is actually going to happen. When breaking down the fight, there are a number of different things to consider. One thing to consider is the fact that this is a pure boxing match.

Tyron Woodley has some highlight reel knockouts in the UFC. He definitely has power in his hands, but he’s not going to be able to use any form or wrestling tonight. In the UFC, Woodley’s hands looked even better than they were due to the fact that his opponents had to think about takedowns.

Jake Paul doesn’t have to think about that. All Jake Paul has to think about is the boxing skills of Tyron Woodley. Say what you want about Jake Paul, but the kid does have some pretty decent skills on the feet and he packs a helluva punch.

He’s also younger and bigger than Tyron Woodley. Paul is also dedicated his life to his boxing career and you know that he’s going to come prepared for battle tonight. That said, I just can’t pick against Tyron Woodley in this one.

At the end of the day, we’ve never seen Jake Paul in there with someone that can hurt him. Woodley can hurt him and hurt him badly. Jake Paul might pass this boxing test with flying colors, but I’m going to have to see it to believe it. My prediction is that Tyron Woodley emphatically ends that Jake Paul drama tonight.

Jake Paul wants a boxing match with Jorge Masvidal

This weekend the combat sports world will turn their attention to the boxing ring. On Sunday night, Jake Paul (3-0) is back as he’s taking on former UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley (19-7-1 MMA) in the main event of a Showtime Boxing card.

This is a big step up in competition for Jake Paul. Paul first fought a fellow YouTuber in Ali Gib back in January of 2020 in his pro boxing debut. That night, Paul scored a first round knockout.

He then fought in November of last year when he took on former NBA player Nate Robinson. This fight went into the second round, but the result was the same. Jake Paul faceplanted Robinson to score the second round knockout.

From there, Jake Paul turned his attention to boxing MMA fighters. After calling out a number of fighters, Paul settled on a boxing match with former MMA world champion Ben Askren. Askren of course is known for his wrestling and not his striking.

Jake Paul knocked Askren out in the first round and showed the world he can knock out real fighters too. Now, he’s taking on a serious threat in Tyron Woodley. For the first time, Jake Paul is boxing someone who can legitimately hurt him.

Boxing Masvidal Next?

Even with a dangerous opponent in front of him, Jake Paul isn’t skipping a beat on calling people out. Now, he’s turned his attention to a UFC fighter that he was once seemingly friends with. That fighter is the UFC’s BMF, Jorge Masvidal (35-15).

Paul trained a little with Masvidal before the Askren fight and the two spent some time together. That said, Masvidal came out recently and told Ariel Helwani that he believes Woodley will knock out Jake Paul in the boxing ring.

Jake Paul didn’t take kindly to these comments. In a media scrum yesterday, Paul turned his attacks towards Jorge Masvidal. Paul said, “Anyone here listen to a Masvidal interview and go, ‘Wow that guys intellectual!’… I don’t think anyone says that. He’s a street fighter gangster who got knocked the f–k out in his last fight so maybe he’s losing some brain cells.”

When asked about a potential boxing match with Masvidal, Paul said, “I would love to fight Masvidal. I think it could very much so happen.” Masvidal responded on Twitter saying, “I guess this means you’ll stop hitting me up now on social media to hang out and train. Don’t worry about me you got a handful of problems coming your way.”

Would you want to see Masvidal in the boxing ring against Jake Paul? Sounds like it could happen down the line if Paul wins this weekend.

Tito Ortiz says Anderson Silva is scared of his power ahead of boxing match

Last week we learned that there is going to be a boxing match between two UFC legends next month. Anderson Silva and Tito Ortiz are set to face each other on a Triller card on September 11th.

The boxing match will serve as the co-main event of the card. The headliner is a boxing match between former UFC champion Vitor Belfort and all time boxing great, Oscar De La Hoya.

Originally, there were talks to have Silva take on Logan Paul next. However, those talks appeared to have stalled out and The Spider shifted his focus to a boxing match with another fellow UFC legend.

This will be Tito Ortiz’s first professional boxing match. Ortiz has always been known as a wrestler-first mixed martial artist. Ortiz made his career on taking his opponents down and using his tremendous ground and pound from the top.

That said, Ortiz can handle his own with the boxing gloves. We have seen him land some big shots in his career like when he dropped Ryan Bader. That said, Ortiz is expected to be a massive underdog heading into this matchup on September 11th.

Silva Boxing Scared?

One interesting note about this boxing match is the weight. Ortiz has fought at light heavyweight virtually his entire career in MMA. Of course, the light heavyweight limit is 205 pounds.

Silva has predominately competed at 185 pounds. However, we’ve seen him go up to light heavyweight on multiple occasions and fight at 205 pounds. With that in mind, I think the majority of the world believed the boxing match would take place at 205 pounds.

However, that’s not the case. While negotiating the contract, Silva insisted that the fight take place at 195 pounds. Worth noting that Ortiz has never fought at that weight in his professional career. Ortiz was not a fan of Silva’s demands and he believes it’s a sign of fear.

In speaking to TMZ Sports, Ortiz said, “To do what he did with the contract, I lost respect for him (Silva). He wants me down to 195. He’s fought at 205 six times in his career and he wants me down to 195. It shows that he’s afraid of my power.”

It looks like we are going to see a boxing match that features two former UFC champions and two legends of the sport. MMA Fighting was the first to report today that Triller is finalizing a boxing matchup between Anderson Silva and Tito Ortiz.

The matchup will take place at a Triller event on September 11th. While Silva has been in talks for his next boxing bout, the booking has come out of no where in regards to the former UFC light heavyweight champion, Tito Ortiz.

Ortiz has teased a return to combat sports in the last year. The Huntington Beach Bad Boy was vocal to Bellator that he wanted to be the next man to challenge Fedor Emelianenko. However, Ortiz never got the opportunity.

We haven’t seen Ortiz compete in combat sports since December of 2019 when he fought former WWE Wrestler Alberto Del Rio. Ortiz won the fight by first round submission. This will be Ortiz’s first professional boxing match.

Another Boxing Match for Silva

Anderson Silva is back in the boxing ring after his big win back in September. Silva took on former middleweight world champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. In a surprising result, Silva controlled Chavez and won the boxing match fairly easily.

After the win, there was talks of a boxing matchup with Logan Paul. That is still supposedly being discussed, however, that is on the shelf for now. Now, Silva will return to the boxing ring to take on a fellow former UFC champion.

Silva should be the massive favorite in this matchup. Tito Ortiz has long been known for his wrestling and not his striking. Silva on the other hand has always been known for his slick striking.

If I’m being honest, I’ll be very interested to watch. That said, I just don’t see how Tito Ortiz will be competitive in boxing against Anderson Silva. That said, at the end of the day, it’s a fight and anything can happen.

Anderson Silva and Logan Paul in talks for boxing match

In the year 2021, we’ve seen a lot of interesting things in the world of boxing. We have seen Jake Paul knock out former MMA champion Ben Askren. We’ve seen Logan Paul go the distance in an exhibition with Floyd Mayweather. 

We have also seen former UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva defeat former boxing champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr in the boxing ring. Next month, Jake Paul is going to be in the ring against former UFC champion Tyron Woodley.

Now, we have learned that there is another boxing match in the works that will pit a former UFC champion against a Paul brother. ESPN was the first to report this evening that Anderson Silva and Logan Paul are in talks for a boxing match for the end of this year.

Paul’s management confirmed the talks and indicated that a deal is getting close to being finalized.

Paul – Silva in Boxing

If the deal does get done, this will be a big step up in competition for Logan Paul. Now, you might want to bring up the fact that he was in the boxing ring with Floyd Mayweather. Mayweather is considered to be one of the greatest of all time.

While that’s true, it’s important to remember that Logan Paul was literally twice the size of Floyd Mayweather. Paul will have no such advantage with the former UFC champion. Anderson Silva proved last month that he can handle his own in the boxing ring.

It’s worth noting that while Silva is 46 years old, he still moves very well and showed off tremendous skill against Chavez Jr last month. This will be a real test to me to see how good Logan Paul actually is in boxing.

Yes, Logan and Jake still have not taken a fight against a legit professional boxer. However, I will give them credit for stepping in there with guys who can actually throw punches. We will learn a lot about the Paul brothers in their boxing matches with Woodley and Silva.

Former UFC champion wants a boxing match with Logan Paul

It’s crazy to think that the hottest boxing fight that anyone can get is a fight with either Logan Paul or Jake Paul. Outside of the major stars in boxing like Canelo and Tyson Fury, the Paul Brothers are the biggest thing that the sport has going for it.

Honestly, that probably says more about the state of the sport of boxing than it does the Paul brothers. Love them or hate them, both Logan and Jake have done a great job of building their online presence and have transitioned well into generating interest in their boxing careers.

Logan just boxed Floyd Mayweather a few weeks ago and Jake Paul is lined up to box former UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley in August. It is indeed a very unique time in the world of combat sports.

We are seeing a lot of former UFC fighters and even champions moving over for special boxing matches. Anderson Silva just took on former world champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. Most MMA guys hadn’t had a ton of success, but Silva put on a boxing clinic. 

After the fight, Silva said he’d be interested in potential boxing matches with the Paul brothers. Yesterday, we learned that another former UFC champion is coming out of retirement and he has his eyes set on Logan Paul.

UFC vs Boxing

Yesterday, former UFC light heavyweight champion Rashad Evans (19-8-1) told ESPN that he’s coming out of retirement. Evans hasn’t competed since June of 2018 when he was knocked out by Anthony Smith. That loss was Evans fifth consecutive loss.

However, after a few years away, the 41 year old is ready to jump back in there. Evans is interested in both boxing and MMA. If his next venture is in the squared circle, he’s interested in either Roy Jones Jr or Logan Paul.

Logan Paul now finds himself in a very interesting position. He just boxed Mayweather and now he potentially has the choice of two former UFC champions. If Logan Paul wants a legit opponent next, he has options.

Given what we just saw from Anderson Silva, I would advise Logan to take a fight with Evans before Silva. However, it’ll be interesting to see how this all plays out. Would you be interested in a boxing matchup between Logan Paul and Rashad Evans?
