New York Giants: Odell Beckham Jr. Has Uncertain Status Going Into Week 16

There’s been talk of shutting down New York Giants star Odell Beckham Jr. for the season because of injury, but at this point, nobody really knows what’s happening. There’s been no official decision from the team yet and that was revealed by head coach Pat Shurmur on Wednesday, when Shurmur confirmed that Beckham wouldn’t go on the injured reserve list.

Furthermore, Shurmur has actively encouraged Beckham to return before the end of the season, even if it’s unnecessarily risky at this point with the Giants out of the playoff race.

“I think at this point, I think it’s the player’s responsibility to do everything they can to get on the field… It’s important that we do everything we can to show up,” Shurmur also stated on Wednesday, while talking about the upcoming week 16 game against the Indianapolis Colts.

Beckham himself has expressed the desire to play in this game, after drawing criticism for missing the last two games with a quad injury.

“If I can play, I’m going to play. It’s just the bottom line. You dreamed of being here, you dedicated, gave everything to be here, so you do all this to play games. As much fun as meetings are and all that other stuff, you do this to play games,” Beckham said. It’s in line with Beckham’s statements all season long. Despite a slow start and a poor early record for the team as a whole, Beckham has consistently been one of the most positive players and has shown an enthusiasm for getting on the field and playing.

But even if Beckham wants to play, that might not be the best move for himself or the team. The Giants are already out of the race for the playoffs, and therefore, it might not be worth it to risk the health of one of the team’s best players for the sake of getting wins in two games that, in the grand scheme of things, don’t mean much.

That’s not to say that they should tank the last two games. But on the other hand, it might not be wise to risk a player like Beckham on them either. Still, those risks don’t seem to have much of an effect on Beckham himself. If it comes down to his own decision, it sounds like we might just see him on the field come Sunday.

“It’s life, so like I said, just taking it a day at a time. There’s not much more I can do than do that and hopefully I feel better tomorrow and then the day after I feel better and day after and day after. I just keep feeling better, that’s the goal.”

Three New York Giants Players Awarded With 2019 Pro Bowl Honors

New York Giants, Saquon Barkley

The NFL announced the rosters for the 2019 Pro Bowl on Tuesday and three New York Giants players were selected as starters. Those players include rookie running back Saquon Barkley, the NFL’s most efficient kicker this season in Aldrick Rosas, and the injured captain of the defense Landon Collins.

Saquon Barkley:

Saquon Barkley, the extraordinary rookie running back out of Penn State will participate in his first Pro Bowl of his career this year. The number two overall pick from last year’s draft leads all rookies in rushing yards and is third in the NFL in that category with 1,155 rushing yards on the season so far. Saquon has also tallied nine rushing touchdowns so far this season. On top of that, Barkley has 82 receptions for 654 yards and 4 receiving touchdowns. This totals his all-purpose yards at an astounding 1,809 yards with two games left to play. The Giants have a special player in Barkley. He is the first rookie Giants running back selected for the Pro Bowl since 1965. Giants fans should expect to see Barkley selected for the Pro Bowl on a yearly basis.

Aldrick Rosas:

After a rocky 2017, fans were skeptical of Aldrick Rosas and unsure if he should return to the team in 2018. However, it is now clear that the Giants front office made the right decision in keeping Rosas. Through 15 weeks of the 2018-2019 NFL season, Rosas has been the league’s best kicker. He has only missed one field goal all season, making his tally an impressive 28 for 29. His longest field goal of the season was a Giants team record 57 yard kick against the Chicago Bears. Rosas even won NFC Special Teams Player of the Week that week. Rosas will be the fourth Giants kicker selected to for the Pro Bowl in team history.

Landon Collins:

Former all-pro safety Landon Collins has now made the Pro Bowl for three straight seasons. Landon is a popular player in the NFL, known for his leadership and hard-hitting play style. Unfortunately, for the second season in a row, Collins will be unable to participate in the event due to injury.

Alternates And Snubs:

Many Giants fans were surprised to see that Odell Beckham Jr. was snubbed from the Pro Bowl roster in 2019. This is the secon season in Odell’s career that he was not selected as a Pro Bowl starter (last season he was not selected due to being placed on injured reserve in week 5.

However, Beckham Jr. was awarded as a second alternate, so it is likely he will have a chance to play in the game anyway. Along with Odell Beckham Jr., the Giants had two other players selected as alternates. Safety/special teamer Michael Thomas was selected as a special teamer first alternate.

Pass rushing outside linebacker Olivier Vernon was also selected as a first alternate. This shows that general managers and coaches around the NFL value Vernon’s play, which could boost his trade value this offseason. Another player who was snubbed from the Pro Bowl is linebacker Alec Ogletree. Ogletree has five interceptions this season and leads the Giants in tackles with 93 tackles. In the opinion of many Giants fans, his play during the second half of the season warrants a Pro Bowl selection.

Odell Beckham Jr. Likely To Miss Rest Of New York Giants Season

New York Giants star reliever Odell Beckham Jr. injured his quad on the very last play of the week 12 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. Kamu Grugier-Hill, a linebacker for the Eagles, swung his leg out in an attempt to stop Beckham Jr., who was tripped violently (no flag was called of course), and was forced into rehab for the next three weeks.

Ahead of the week 16 game against the Indianapolis Colts, the Giants have several players missing from practice, one of which is Beckham, who is still nursing the tender quad.

The Giants would be wise to sit Beckham for the remainder of the year, given the team is mathematically ruled out of the playoffs and are far from any sort of meaningful matchups.

Playing the star receiver would only further the probability of injury. Conserving his health and saving him for another day is the route the Giants must take, but they also can’t shit him down for the rest of the year, so they will play the injury report game.

OBJ was though to have suffered a hematoma – a collection of blood that can very painful after a significant hit to a body part. Recent reports state that he simply strained the quad and has been limited in practice the past few weeks.

New York Giants: Odell Beckham Jr. Ruled OUT Against Tennessee Titans

New York Giants, Odell Beckham Jr.

With the New York Giants in do-or-die mode going into the week 15 matchup against the Tennessee Titans, every bit of talent on the roster will help push them over the hump. The Giants need to win their last three games to even have a shot at making the playoffs, and with Odell Beckham Jr, being ruled OUT ahead of the game, they will need to rely heavily on Saquon Barkley again.

Odell Beckham Jr. injury update:

Beckham was also out last week with a bruised quad, but Big Blue managed to stifle a struggling Washington team 40-16. The Titans will be a whole different beast, as they have one of the league’s better defensive units, and Marcus Mariota is much better than Mark Sanchez.

Expect the Giants to come out of the gate flying, finding ways to get the ball into the hands of their most prolific play-maker. Barkley will be the focal point, and running the ball will be an essential part of the game plan. In the past four games, Barkley has touched the ball more than 20 times on the ground in three of them. Before that, he had only touched the ball more than 20 times once.

Beckham received medical advice in regard to his quad bruise earlier in the week, which was precautionary according to head coach Pat Shurmur. Clearly, the star wide-out is dealing with something a bit more painful than expected.

It’s possible the Giants decide to sit him down for the remainder of the season, unless they can manage to get one step closer to a potential playoff berth.

Who Utilized Giants’ Odell Beckham Jr. Better: Ben McAdoo Or Pat Shurmur?

The New York Giants’ offense has taken steps forward since the 2017 season. Ironically enough it would be even better if Pat Shurmur and Mike Shula would continue to use Odell Beckham Jr. similar to the way Ben McAdoo used him.

Odell Beckham Jr.’s numbers under Ben McAdoo:

There wasn’t a whole lot Ben McAdoo did right, but he knew how to get the ball to his most dangerous weapon. McAdoo coached Odell for 4 seasons. In the first 2 seasons, he caught a total of 25 touchdown passes. During his third season, he caught 10 touchdown passes. In his fourth season, Odell only played in 4 games and still had 3 touchdown receptions. One of Odell’s elite traits was scoring in nearly every game he played in, at one point he had an impressive 38 touchdowns in 45 games played.

In seasons with at least 12 games played he’s always had at least 90 receptions with over 1,200 yards. He is on pace to reach both of those numbers again in 2018 but with just a few impactful differences.

Odell Beckham Jr.’s numbers under Pat Shurmur and Mike Shula:

The Giants are still getting plenty of receptions and yards from their star receiver. The star receiver is  already over 1,000 yards and has 77 receptions through 12 games. He’s catching 62.1 % of his targets which is his best catch-rate since his rookie season. He’s even averaging more yards per game in 2018 than he did in the 2016 season when the Giants team went to the playoffs. Pat Shurmur and Mike Shula have come up with some good ways to use Odell Beckham Jr. and they’ve even gotten a couple of touchdown passes out of him, but he needs to get back to scoring as a receiver. Odell was averaging nearly a touchdown per game for 4 seasons before the new regime took over, his 6 touchdowns in 12 games aren’t nearly the same rate he had for 4 seasons under Ben McAdoo.

What did Ben McAdoo do differently?

Some might say Odell isn’t scoring due to a new system, but he caught a touchdown in his very first NFL game. He followed up with 11 more touchdowns in the last 11 games of his rookie season. The main reason is quite simple, he’s not being targeted enough in the red zone. This is actually the first year in Odell’s career that he hasn’t been the most targeted Giant in the red zone through 12 games. That exciting signature play of taking a slant to the house has completely disappeared under the new regime. In 4 seasons Ben McAdoo was able to generate 7 touchdowns from slant routes alone. In 2018 Odell hasn’t scored a single touchdown on a slant route. While it sounds nit-picky to ask for a couple more touchdowns this team has lost 6 games by one possession.

If it’s not broken, don’t fix it.

Sometimes a new coaching staff needs to keep certain things in place that consistently worked for a team. Odell’s high touchdown totals have only helped lead to the playoffs once before, but in a year of 6 losses by one possession a couple more touchdowns could’ve drastically changed the season.

New York Giants: Odell Beckham Jr. Out Against Washington Redskins

New York Giants, Odell Beckham Jr.

The New York Giants won’t have one of their top offensive players in today’s game with the Washington Redskins, as receiver Odell Beckham Jr. is out with an injury. The injury in question is bruised quadriceps, and while a decision was put off until the day before the game, Beckham was finally ruled out and will not play.

It’s a big loss in a game where some favor the Giants to win partially because of Washington’s own injury troubles, which saw quarterbacks Alex Smith and Colt McCoy go down with injuries in the weeks leading up to this matchup.

The reaction to this has been mixed, but as you can see by looking at fan replies to the team’s official announcement, there’s a couple of different camps: those that believe it will lead to a bigger day for Saquon Barkley, who is coming off of a great game, and those who think that the Giants will certainly lose and perhaps benefit by gaining a better draft position with the loss.

Beckham has just over 1,000 yards receiving this season and has played in every game so far. With four games left in the season, and six touchdowns, it’s still possible that Beckham reaches double-digit touchdowns again as he’s done in every year of his career except for 2017, when he was injured for most of the season. However, being out of the Washington game means that Beckham will only have three games to get four more touchdowns.

The Giants may lean more on their running game because of this and fortunately, Saquon Barkley is coming off of a 125 yard performance against the Chicago Bears, which included 24 rushing attempts. It seems the Giants have been learning to utilize their star running back more as the season progresses. This time, however, they may not have much of a choice.

Odell Beckham Jr: New York Giants Are “A Winning Organization”

Odell Beckham Jr. has been one of the biggest supporters of the New York Giants this season. When the team started 1-7, Beckham was one of the players that remained positive and talked about how close the team had come to victory in certain games, and about how they could bounce back if they just made some adjustments and worked hard at it. When they defeated the 49ers to start the second half of the regular season, Beckham was in the camp that believed the Giants could go 8-0 to make the playoffs.

With their loss to the Eagles, the hopes for that are out the window. Beckham, however, hasn’t thrown in the towel yet and for better or worse, still has optimism at this point. “I wanted to win all eight, that’s not what happened, but there’s no giving up, there’s no quit, not from me or anybody in here. Just gotta win these last whatever games, see what happens.”

Perhaps more interestingly, Beckham had something to say about the Giants organization, which hasn’t been popular with the fans and hasn’t had a good reputation with neutral commentators and analysts this season. After all, from the outside looking in, things seem like a trainwreck. Even for Giants fans, it’s hard not to describe the season that way. But Beckham’s take was different.

“This is a winning organization. They’ve won in the past, so just gotta trust the process and at some point in time the goal is to obviously hang a banner and raise that trophy, so all you could do is just be optimistic and keep pushing forward and get better.”

The only thing is, this isn’t a winning organization. It was one in the past, but the Super Bowl years are long gone and even making the playoffs feels like a distant memory at this point. The Giants have underachieved consistently in recent years and that led to the organization cleaning house and replacing both the General Manager and the coach during the same offseason. Not something that happens in a winning organization.

But even if this take is off in terms of accuracy, one can’t complain about Beckham remaining motivated despite the bad circumstances this year. This kind of energy and optimism will be useful when the team is winning again in the future, and it’s not something you come across in every player.

New York Giants: Odell Beckham Jr. Says What Everyone Is Thinking

Sunday featured a heartbreaking loss for the New York Giants, who went down to their rivals from Philadelphia after blowing a lead going into the second half. The team scored 19 points in the first half but couldn’t replicate the performance after halftime, ending the game with only three more points than they originally went into the locker room with.

Strangely, it happened partly because they didn’t use Saquon Barkley as much in the second half, despite the running back looking set to have a big day. The fact has been pointed out by all corners of the fanbase as evidence that head coach Pat Shurmur doesn’t quite know what he’s doing, but it seems even some players on the team are dissatisfied with the offensive playcalling in the second half.

Even influential players like Odell Beckham Jr. Beckham’s comments referred to the Eagles secondary rather than the ground game, but were still about the playcalling and the lack of a real effort to take the initiative and go after the defense.

“Knowing they were struggling [with injuries] in the secondary, personally I would’ve loved to attack them. But that wasn’t in our game plan,” Beckham said after the game. Beckham led the team in both receptions and receiving yards with 5 catches and 85 yards, but couldn’t catch the ball in the end zone for a play that could have won the game for the Giants.

Beckham did have a chance to do that near the end of the game, and it appeared that his jersey had been pulled by the cornerback on the play, which ended as an incompletion. It looked like a missed call, and when the referee didn’t throw the flag for pass interference, the Giants were robbed of a chance to move closer and have a fresh set of tries to get the ball in for a score.

The Giants wouldn’t have been in a position where they needed a touchdown on that drive, however, if they had made better adjustments. Philadelphia’s superior adjustments at halftime were also mentioned by Beckham. “They came out and made their adjustments and they just made better adjustments than we did. They ran better plays. They made the plays.”

The coaching staff is really the only area you can point fingers at after this. Hopefully, this game is one bad outing that can be used as an example of what not to do in the future, rather than an indication of the skill or lack thereof in that department.

Saquon Barkley Powers The New York Giants For Third-Win: Recap

New York Giants

The New York Giants‘ offense finally looked like the offense that fans were expecting to see heading into the season. Coach Pat Shurmur gave the Buccaneers defense a heavy dose of Saquon Barkley.

Barkley finished the day with 27 carries for 142 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns. On top of that, Barkley added two receptions for 10 yards and one receiving touchdown. Eli Manning was sharp to start the game, completing his first 11 pass attempts (tying a career high). Manning finished the day with an incredible 94% completion percentage (17/18), 231 yards, and two touchdowns.

He connected on red zone touchdown passes with Barkley and Beckham Jr.

The Giants’ defense gave Ryan Fitzpatrick a rough time early on, forcing three interceptions. Defensive backs Michael Thomas and Curtis Riley each got their first interceptions of the season. Janoris Jenkins dropped an easy interception that was then scooped out of the air by linebacker Alec Ogletree, who then returned the interception back for a touchdown. The poor play of Fitzpatrick lead to his inevitable benching for Jameis Winston in the third quarter.

Winston came in and played a solid half of football. Once Winston came in, the defense appeared to fall asleep, letting up three big touchdown drives to keep the game close.

With a three point lead with five minutes remaining, Manning connected with Evan Engram on a 54 yard reception to get the Giants back in the red zone. This ultimately lead to Saquon Barkley’s third touchdown of the game, extending the Giants lead to ten. The defense then let up a huge touchdown to Mike Evans, but recovered the ensuing onside kick. They were then able to let Barkley run the clock down to thirty seconds and punt the ball back to Tampa Bay. B.W. Webb then finished the game, intercepting Winston with 15 seconds remaining.

Pat Shurmur called a great game. The Giants offense was able to score a season high 38 points in a huge win at home to keep the season alive. The Giants are now on a two game winning streak with a huge divisional game against the Eagles coming up next Sunday. After today’s win, Giants fans should feel hopeful that their team can achieve Odell Beckham Jr.’s goal of winning out and slipping into the playoffs. If the offense keeps up this level of play, they could have a great finish to the season.

Final Score: Giants- 38, Buccaneers- 35.

Why New York Giants Fans Shouldn’t Be Hoping For Tank Season

New York Giants, Odell Beckham Jr.

New York Giants fans have been fortunate enough to witness a multitude of miracles go their team’s way during the franchise’s long history. From Norwood’s wide right kick to hand Super Bowl XXV to the Giants, to “The Helmet Catch” in Super Bowl XLII, and Manningham’s miraculous reception down the left sideline in Super Bowl XLVI; the Giants have been on the right side of many of the NFL’s greatest miracles.

But, what could be the greatest miracle of them all is one that ‘could’ happen this season. To call it a pipe dream is an understatement, but that’s why it would be a miracle.

This miracle would be if the 1-7 Giants came back and won their final eight games to slip into the playoffs at 9-7. And as all Giants fans know, once you’re in the playoffs, anything can happen. As Odell Beckham Jr. said, the last time the Giants went to the playoffs at 9-7, they did “pretty good.” No team has ever been able to accomplish something like this. According to NFL’s Next Gen Stats, the 1-7 Giants had a 1% chance of making the playoffs (prior to Monday night’s win in San Francisco). How could Giants fans not root for their team to defy all odds and make the playoffs with a 1% chance?

The Sinking Draft Stock Of The 2019 Quarterback Class:

Giants fans all over twitter have been crying out for a quarterback change to take place this season or the next. Some fans have even created a few slogans in favor of the Giants drafting Oregon’s Justin Herbert, such as: “suck for the duck,” “just lose for Justin,” and “hurtin’ for Herbert.”

These slogans are all very cute, however, it is rumored that Justin Herbert might not even declare for the 2019 draft. On top of that, his draft stock has gone down in October and November, according to CBS Sports. CBS Sports now has him ranked as the third best quarterback prospect in this draft class, behind Drew Lock and Ryan Finley.

All three of these prospects (Herbert, Lock, and Finley) have potential, but none of them have been able to prove themselves to be a “can’t miss” prospect. The Giants could potentially draft a quarterback with the, 16th, 28th, or even the 32nd pick who seemingly has the same amount of talent and potential as a player selected with a top ten pick.

The Chemistry For The Future:

The New York Giants’ players have two options: they can play their hardest together and try to win every game possible, or they can simply give up. Good luck trying to convince a competitor like Odell Beckham Jr. to give up mid-season. If half the locker room decides to give up and the other half decides to play like they’re in the playoffs, this would cause a huge division in the locker room.

This division would destroy the team’s chemistry. The 2017 season should give us a basis for how a coach ‘shouldn’t’ manage a locker room. Moving forward, having a well balanced team is essential for success, and in times of adversity the leaders on the team must come together and promote a positive vision for the future. Establishing a motive for success will be the goal after every game, especially if the Giants lose.
