New York Giants: Odell Beckham Jr. Must Overcome His Fear In 2019

While injuries are often unpredictable and random, New York Giants star receiver Odell Beckham Jr. has managed to pick up a few throughout the first few years of his illustrious career.

From a hamstring ailment in his rookie season to a broken ankle in 2017, the wideout must reach his true potential in 2019. Having only one season under 1,000 receiving yards is quite impressive, especially when you consider the fact that he’s only played a full season once in his professional career.

Will the Giants stick with their trusty steed at QB? And how does it affect OBJ?

The likelihood of Eli Manning remaining at quarterback for the Giants is good as we trek through the cold months of the offseason, and Beckham will likely be happy with that. Changing quarterbacks is exciting, but the chemistry and timing that Manning and the star receiver have developed will be whisked away with one simple change.

Now, it’s probable that the Giants draft a signal caller to learn behind their veteran leader for at least one season, and it will give him time to curate a relationship with Beckham, an essential part to the success of the offense.

But, Beckham must leave his injuries behind and ensure he puts his best foot forward in the years ahead. Odell stated that he didn’t feel 100% last season, mainly due to the mental stress of trusting the healed ankle and feeling comfortable going full-speed. Those concerns must be eliminated if he wishes to perform at the top of his game.

A potentially ELIte offense:

An offense consisting of Manning, Beckham, Saquon Barkley, Sterling Shepard, and an improved offensive line SHOULD rank in the top 10 in the league. The offensive line portion of that statement is undeniably a significant factor, as Manning isn’t able to escape the pocket and make throws on the run as he once did. A lot of the deficiencies on the offense are directly linked to Manning’s body-guards, and ensuring the unit is allocated the proper resources is essential to the efficiency of the quarterback and his weapons.

Beckham will play better if Manning plays better, that’s a fact we can all agree on. Regardless of the O-line play, Beckham must overcome his fear of injury and play loose and calm. That will allow him to reach his full potential, but other factors surely play a part in his effectiveness on the football field.

New York Giants: Saquon Barkley Wins Offensive Rookie Of The Year

New York Giants, Saquon Barkley

After winning the 2018 Pepsi Rookie of the Year on Thursday, Saquon Barkley was awarded twice more on Saturday. Early Saturday afternoon, it was announced that Barkley won the 2018 FedEx Ground Player of the Year award. Saturday evening, the 2019 NFL Honors took place, and Saquon took home an award there, too.

The AP Offensive Rookie of the Year is Saquon Barkley. It was a battle between the number one and number two overall picks in the 2018 NFL Draft. Saquon beat out Baker Mayfield to take home the prestigious Offensive Rookie of the Year award. To win the FedEx award, Barkley beat out fellow running backs Ezekiel Elliot and Todd Gurley.

Baker Mayfield created good competition in the voting for Barkley. But in the end, Saquon won the voting with 26.5 votes, compared to Baker’s 21.5, and Quenton Nelson‘s 2.

Saquon Barkley’s Statistics

Saquon got it done on the ground this year with 1,307 rushing yards and 11 rushing touchdowns. This included an average of 5.0 yards per carry on 261 rushing attempts.

Not only did Saquon get it done on the ground, but he got it done through the air, too. Barkley totaled 2,028 scrimmage yards. His 91 receptions were a rookie running back record, and they amounted to 721 receiving yards and 4 receiving touchdowns.

A Piece Of New York Giants History

Saquon is the second New York Giant to win this award in the last five years. He is the third Giants player to be awarded with a rookie of the year award. Giants wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. won the award in 2014. Odell and Saquon are the only two players in New York Giants franchise history to win Offensive Rookie of the Year. Lawrence Taylor won defensive rookie of the year for the Giants in 1981.

Highlights From The NFL Honors

The NFL Honors even had Beckham Jr. present Barkley the award (along with the beautiful actress Vanessa Hudgens):

Saquon’s rookie year was full of highlights. To commemorate his historic rookie season, the NFL broke down his top 10 plays of the season:

New York Giants: Odell Beckham Jr. And Drake Being Sued For Altercation

2018 wasn’t the friendliest year to New York Giants receiver Odell Beckham Jr., and it looks like 2019 could start off on a bad note too. According to TMZ, Beckham, as well as Drake and one other associate, are being sued for their role in an altercation at the Delilah nightclub in West Hollywood.

Bennett Sipes claims to have been attacked by Younes Bendjima, Kourtney Kardashian’s ex who was at the club with Beckham and Drake when the altercation happened. Sipes says that the attack has left him with “extreme mental anguish and physical pain,” and is now suing because of it.

However, you shouldn’t jump to conclusions about Beckham just yet. There are multiple versions of the story, and it’s hard to tell at this point which one is the truth. When reporting on the initial incident last year, TMZ claimed that other sources supported Beckham’s group and claimed that Bennett was in the wrong.

Sources connected with the group say Sipes was the aggressor in the VIP area, and incited them as they left. They also say Drake and Odell had nothing to do with the fight.

That doesn’t change the fact, though, that this is undeniably bad press for Beckham and is another bad incident during a bad past few months. Beckham missed the last four games of the 2018 season because of a quad injury, and slightly under performed statistically, failing to get double-digit touchdowns for the second straight season.

This comes after Beckham signed a $95M contract in the 2018 offseason, which places larger expectations on him going forward. Giants fans can only hope that the lawsuit is resolved quickly, during the offseason, and not later on when it’s time for the regular season to become the focus.

New York Giants: Top Quarterback Prospect Kyler Murray Declares For Draft Amid Baseball Rumors

It has been one week since Dwayne Haskins Jr. declared for the NFL Draft. On Monday, his competition for the top quarterback spot in the 2019 NFL Draft, Kyler Murray, officially declared. Kyler Murray is a junior quarterback out of Oklahoma University.

Kyler declared on the final day that underclassman could declare for the draft, with the deadline being at midnight. It has been an uncertain rumor wether or not Murray would declare due to his possible career in baseball, but he has decided to keep his options open and declare for the 2019 NFL Draft.

Kyler Murray Controversy

In June of 2019, the Oakland A’s selected Kyler Murray with the 9th pick in the 2018 Major League Baseball Draft. Murray is a talented out fielder. Some fans believe he could be a better professional baseball player than he could be a professional football player. Kyler has not been able to come to a decision on which sport he will choose to play, but declaring for the NFL Draft is a way to keep his options open.

Declaring for the draft does not mean Kyler Murray is choosing to play football instead of baseball. It simply means he is keeping his options open. He has a few more weeks to decide which sport he will pursue. By declaring, he now has the ability to choose football if he wants to, whereas not declaring would have meant he had to choose baseball or stay at Oklahoma one more year.

Murray declaring for the draft means he is strongly considering choosing football. It was believed for a while that Murray would choose baseball instead, but things changed over the past couple months. Kyler Murray won the Heisman Trophy in December, which proves he is an insanely talented football player who had an electric 2018 season. However, some scouts and analysts do not think he could succeed in the NFL due to his small stature.

Kyler Murray is listed at 5 feet 10 inches, but many fans and analysts are skeptical of that height. Some believe he is closer to 5 feet 9 inches, and some believe he is actually 5 feet 8 inches. This would make him the shortest quarterback in the NFL. This makes scouts worry wether Murray can even see over his offensive linemen when throwing the ball at the NFL level. On top of that, Murray is listed at 194 pounds, which fans and analysts are also skeptical of. With such a small stature, fans and scouts have the right to wonder wether Kyler’s body can handle taking hits in the NFL. All eyes will be on Kyler Murray as he gets measured at the NFL Scouting Combine in February.

Kyler Murray Statistics And Highlights

Kyler Murray started one season at quarterback for the Oklahoma Sooners. In 2018, Kyler Murray threw for 4,361 passing yards to go along with 42 passing touchdowns. His touchdown to interception ratio was impressive, as he only thre 7 interceptions. He was also an accurate passer with a 69% completion percentage.

One trait that makes Kyler so special is his dual-threat ability. Kyler had 140 rushing attempts on which he averaged 7.2 yards per attempt and totaled 1,001 rushing yards and 12 rushing touchdowns. His ability to make plays with his legs makes defenses need to construct special game plans.

Murray is the ultimate dual-threat quarterback. Having him in an offense with Saquon Barkley and Odell Beckham Jr. could be electric, must-see TV. However, Kyler Murray will need to fill out his frame and remain healthy to find success at the professional level.

Why You Should Ignore The Odell Beckham Jr. Trade Rumors

Have you ever felt like you’ve experienced something before? Most fans of the New York Giants should have a bad case of deja vu right now, because it’s that one time of the year when the media is reporting on Odell Beckham Jr. trade rumors. It’s a process we all went through last year, when there were plenty of people who were sure that Beckham would be a member of the Los Angeles Rams.

To their credit, that move didn’t seem as unlikely at the time. The Rams had already made high profile moves, and while it would have been surprising, it hardly would have been shocking for the Rams to acquire Beckham as the last of those roster changes. But the move never happened, Beckham signed a new contract to play with the Giants long term, and a lot of reporters had to eat their words after pushing the rumors that a move was about to happen.

We’re going through the same thing again this season, even though it’s even more unlikely that Beckham leaves the Giants. Realistically, it’s hard to say that the New York Giants front office went into this season expecting very much. If one more bad season was all it would take for them to change their minds about Beckham and trade him away, potentially to the 49ers for the 2nd overall draft pick, why would they have signed him to a huge contract in the first place? Why not begin the rebuild earlier and trade him without signing him to a new contract?

That $95M contract makes it much harder to find a trade partner, too. If the Giants wanted to make a trade, they wouldn’t have agreed to it. Furthermore, there’s no guarantee that the value they get from a trade is better than the value that they would get from keeping Beckham, especially if the theoretical trade involves the Arizona Cardinals and the second overall pick. The Giants have already shown that they’re committed to rebuilding around Saquon Barkley and Odell Beckham Jr. It just wouldn’t make sense for them to turn that around right now and make a trade in the buildup period to the draft.

We’ve already been through this, everyone. You might see more and more rumors about a trade in the coming weeks, but just remember: the speculation this year isn’t even as tense as it was last year during the offseason. Just because the rumors are being repeated again doesn’t mean that reporters know more about the Giants front office than they did at that point. And that’s why, going into the draft, there’s more important things to focus on.

Saquon Barkley Looking To Join Elite Company On Sunday

New York Giants, Saquon Barkley

The New York Giants will face off in week 17 against the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday. The 5-10 Giants will be playing already eliminated from the playoffs. The Cowboys will be playing with a playoff spot already clinched. Despite being eliminated, Giants fans do have something to look forward to: Saquon Barkley.

Record Chasing

Saquon Barkley has had a monster rookie season. He is a major candidate to win offensive rookie of the year. This season, Barkley has rushed the ball 244 time for 1,198 yards and 10 rushing touchdowns. In addition, Saquon has totaled 87 receptions for 688 receiving yards and 4 receiving touchdowns. These numbers put Barkley in position to break two big records on Sunday.

The NFL record for the most receptions by a rookie running back in a season is held by Reggie Bush with 88 receptions. Barkley is one reception away from tying that record, but odds are he hauls in two or more receptions and breaks it.

If Saquon gains three receptions, he will tie Odell Beckham Jr.’s record for most receptions in a season by a rookie in the franchise’s history history.

Joining Elite Company

Saquon Barkley currently has 1,886 total yards from scrimmage. If he is able to gain 114 total yards on Sunday, Saquon will join elite company.

2,000 total yards from scrimmage would be a huge accomplishment for Barkley. He would be only the third rookie running back to total 2,000+ yards from scrimmage. The other two players who accomplished this are Eric Dickerson and Edgerrin James.

Barkley is already one of the best backs in the NFL. The sky is the limit for the rookie. On Sunday he can prove that he has the chance to be one of the great running backs to ever play in the NFL. It all begins with a historic rookie season.

Odell Beckham Jr Hopes Eli Manning Goes Out With A Trophy

New York Giants wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. will miss the end of the season with a bruised quadricep, but that doesn’t mean Beckham doesn’t have some interesting takes on Eli Manning and the future of the Giants’ franchise quarterback. The comments come at a pretty timely point in the season, where there’s a lot of debate about whether or not Manning will be the team’s starter next season and on where the Giants should spend their first round draft pick.

While Beckham did state that these decisions aren’t in his hands, as a receiver and not an executive, he did say some things that indicate that he’d prefer Manning sticking around for a while longer.

“At the end of the day, I want him to be able to go home and talk trash to his brothers. I want him to go out, when it’s time to go out, I want him to go out the right way, I want him to go out with a trophy, so he can go home and, not rub it in their face, but that he’s got three rings and [Peyton’s] got two, or whatever it is. That’s what I want for him, that’s how I want him to finish. But it has nothing to do with me, it’s not my call, I’m just a receiver. So that’s above my pay grade.”

Manning hasn’t had a shot to win in the playoffs and bring home another trophy since 2016, which was also the year before Beckham’s injury troubles would limit him both last season and late this season. This year, Beckham bounced back from a slow start but will miss the last game of the season, and has been out since the Giants beat the Chicago Bears weeks ago.

The team’s decision to have Beckham sit out, however, makes sense given the fact that the Giants are already out of the playoff race. There’s no reason to risk one of their best players for one more regular season win. “You train all offseason for these 16 games, plus a chance to go to the playoffs. It’s definitely not the way I want to end the season,” Beckham said about the season’s result.

And what will happen to Eli Manning next year? Nobody knows. Manning himself has said earlier that he doesn’t know and Pat Shurmur also said earlier in the month that any decision would be made in the offseason. “Those are offseason discussions. I’m really pleased with the way he’s been playing of late,” Shurmur said.

The issue will continue to be talked about into the offseason, and it will likely be the main one that divides the Giants fanbase going into the draft. For now, though, the focus is on the last game of the season… Which Eli Manning will get the start in.

New York Giants: Previewing Week 17 Matchup Vs. Dallas

Coming off of a late game collapse in Indianapolis last week, the 5-10 New York Giants will be hosting the Dallas Cowboys at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday for the week 17 season finale. The Cowboys are, of course, a division rival in the NFC East. This means that this is the Giants’ second matchup with Dallas this season.

In week two, the Giants traveled to Dallas to play the Cowboys in a primetime Sunday night matchup. The Giants lost this game 13-20. This was when the Giants offense was at an extreme low point. The final score was only a seven point difference, but this was because of a garbage-time touchdown by the Giants. The Cowboys owned them this game, but the Giants will have a chance to get revenge in week 17.

Taking A Look At The Cowboys

The Cowboys have clinched a playoff spot by winning the NFC East. They are sitting at 9-6 and will be looking to reach double digit wins after coming up a game short last season. Dallas is being lead by third year running back Ezekiel Elliot. Elliot leads the league in rushing yards this season.

The Cowboys offense has added a new weapon since the Giants last played them. They received wide receiver Amari Cooper in a trade with the Oakland Raiders. Since joining the Cowboys in week nine, Cooper has totaled 694 receiving yards and six receiving touchdowns. Elliot and Cooper are two key players that the Giants defense will need to stop in order to win.

On the defensive side of the ball, the Cowboys have had a rookie emerge as the leader of their defense. The first-year linebacker out of Boise State University, Leighton Vander Esch, has totalled 131 tackles this season, third in the NFL. On top of that, Vander Esch has added two interceptions and seven passes defended. Edge rusher Demarcus Lawrence is also having a good season. He has an impressive 9.5 sacks and 61 tackles this season. The Giants’ offensive line will need to give Lawrence a lot of attention in order to keep quarterback Eli Manning upright.

Injury Report

For the fourth time this season, superstar wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. has been ruled out. His season is over after just twelve games and he will not play in the season finale. The Giants have also ruled out defensive end Mario Edwards, middle linebacker Alec Ogletree, tight end Rhett Ellison, and wide receiver Russell Shepard.

The Cowboys will be without two defensive linemen this week. Defensive tackle David Irving and defensive end Tyrone Crawford will not play on Sunday. On top of that, the Cowboys have four players questionable. Left tackle Tyron Smith, right guard Zack Martin, linebacker Sean Lee, and cornerback Anthony Brown are all questionable.

The Giants’ Game Plan

The Cowboys have already clinched a playoff spot and have no room for improvement for a higher seed. With this in mind, it is likely that many of the Cowboys’ starters will see minimal to no playing time. The Giants will lean heavily on running back Saquon Barkley this week with multiple defensive linemen and linebackers either out or questionable for Dallas. Eli Manning had a good day passing the ball last Sunday against the Colts, and Giants fans should expect more of the same from the veteran quarterback against a mediocre Dallas defense.

The Giants will look to improve to 6-10 against the Cowboys, but many fans will argue that they shouldn’t. The Giants currently hold the 8th pick in the draft. With a win this week, the Giants could fall all the way back to the 12th pick in the draft. With a loss, the Giants could stay where they are, or potentially move all the way up to the 4th pick. For the Giants’ future, a loss would be ideal. However, head coach Pat Shurmur has already spoken out against tanking, so expect the Giants to give this one their all.

New York Giants: Odell Beckham Jr. Will Likely Miss Last Game Of Season

The New York Giants will be going all out for a win against the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday, but they may just have to do so for another game without one of their best players. The Odell Beckham Jr. injury has been one of the storylines of the second half of the season, and that injury could last through the end of the season and cause Beckham to miss the Dallas game in addition to every other game since the win against the Chicago Bears.

Beckham was a notable absence on Thursday’s practice, which isn’t a good sign for making a late season comeback to help the Giants out against their bitter rivals. Of course, it hasn’t been officially confirmed yet by Pat Shurmur. Shurmur had more optimistic words for the press, but those words don’t match up with Beckham sitting out of practice on Thursday.

“We’ll just have to see where they’re at. They’re feeling better than they did last week, we’ll just have to see,” Shurmur said, speaking of both Beckham and linebacker Alec Ogletree, who missed the most recent game while in concussion protocol. Ogletree also sat out practice and is unlikely to play in the game itself.

Beckham only has six touchdowns this season and barring a comeback for the last game, and a four touchdown performance, will finish without getting to double-digit touchdowns for the second straight year. You can’t put all the blame on Beckham, though. The offensive line has been shaky and, earlier in the season, was one of the worst in the league. With more pressure on Eli Manning, it’s been harder for Beckham to get the ball than it has been in past years.

Still, Beckham has 1,052 yards on the season, and Giants fans will be glad to see him back once he eventually recovers from his current quad injury. That, however, might not be until the season is already done.

New York Giants Collapse In The Final Minutes And Lose To The Colts 28-26

The New York Giants traveled to Indianapolis to play the white hot Colts in week 16. The Colts had won 7 of their last 8 games and were fighting for a playoff spot. The Giants came into this game already eliminated from playoff contention, but refusing to quit. The Giants started the game strong, but ultimately could not finish it off and took a one point loss against the Colts. The Colts improve to a strong 9-6 record on the season while the Giants sink to a lowly 5-10.

Dynamic Offense Leads The Giants To A Strong Start

The Giants had a lead up until the final minute of the game. The offense struggled to get going on the ground, but the passing attack was consistently excellent throughout the majority of the game. The Giants jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter from a strong connection between quarterback Eli Manning and wide receiver Sterling Shepard. With Odell Beckham Jr. out this week, Shepard stepped up and had his best game of the season. Shepard finished the game with six receptions for 113 yards, including multiple third down conversions and one beautiful double move 57 yard completion down to the six yard line. This set up a Scott Simonson three yard touchdown reception.

Another stand out player on offense this week was tight end Evan Engram. Engram struggled to get going during the first half of the season. He dealt with a couple of injuries and was not used much in the offensive game plan. However, in the past few weeks, Engram has been receiving an influx in targets and therefore an increase in production.

Head coach Pat Shurmur called many plays for Engram including two end around rushing attempts that gained a total of 26 yards. However, it was through the passing game that Engram made a real impact. He hauled in all six of his targets for 87 receiving yards. He got the Giants down to the one yard line twice to set up easy touchdowns for his quarterback, once on a rushing attempt, and once on a deep pass down the seam.

Second Half Collapse

The Giants went into halftime up by 10. The score was 17-7, but the Colts quickly cut it down to a three point game as quarterback Andrew Luck connected with receiver Dontrelle Inman for a touchdown on third and goal. The Giants responded with a touchdown of their own as Manning converted his seventh rushing touchdown of his career on a quarterback sneak from the one yard line.

However, the Colts were able to put together a comeback after this. Running back Marlon Mack rushed for a touchdown to make it a three point game again. The Giants were able to muster up one more field goal, but their inability to score a red zone touchdown in the fourth quarter would ultimately be their demise. The Colts were able to put together a game winning drive on the struggling Giants defense.

They made their way down to the 20 yard line with two minutes remaining. On first and goal, Luck threw an incompletion to the end zone, however, Giants cornerback B.W. Webb was called for pass interference, giving the Colts a first and goal from the one yard line. This would result in a touchdown from Luck to receiver Chester Rogers with under a minute remaining. The Giants would get the ball back with 55 seconds left with the opportunity to score, but they would have the game end with an Eli Manning interception.

The Aftermath Of The Loss

The Giants record is now 5-10 with one game left to play this season. Eli Manning and the Giants offense played a solid game but came up short in the end. The defense struggled to stop the Colts offense in the second half, driving home the tenth loss of the season. With this loss comes a portion of good news. The Giants showed they have multiple young players to build upon for their future, such as Shepard and Engram. In addition, the Giants moved up in draft positioning ahead of the Jaguars and to the seventh overall pick. This loss has potential to be a positive for the Giants in the long run.
