Should the New York Giants Trade Odell Beckham Jr.?

Odell Beckham Jr. and the New York Giants have been a hot topic over the last few days. It all stemmed from a quote from Giants’ co-owner, John Mara when asked if they were looking to trade Odell.

Mara said: “I can’t answer that one way or the other. We’re certainly not shopping him. Again, when you’re coming off a season when you’re 3-13 and played as poorly as we played, I wouldn’t say that anyone is untouchable.”

Odell Beckham Jr. has brought some drama the moment “the catch” happened. After that, Odell’s life was never the same, and with that, he brought plenty of drama to the Giants’ organization. But, this offseason has been a whole other level of drama, mostly off the field. So, it is understandable that there have been rumors of possible trade talks.

The bottom line is, Odell Beckham Jr. is the best player on his team and one of the best players in the NFL. That is not a player that you trade, and GM Dave Gettleman seems to feel the same way.

Let’s not forget what Odell Beckham did for Eli Manning’s career. 2013 was arguably Eli’s worst season of his career when he threw for 3818 yards with 18 touchdowns and 27 interceptions. It began to look more and more like the end for Eli Manning, but then the Giants drafted Odell in 2014.

In 2014 and 2015, Eli Manning threw for over 4000 yards, 30 and 35 touchdowns, with only 14 interceptions each year. 2016 saw a slight decrease in yards and touchdowns, but he still threw for over 4000 yards.

Then came the disaster of the 2017 season, Odell got hurt in the preseason and was never himself on the field, and then came his season-ending injury in week 5 against the LA Chargers. Eli’s job once again was in question, he was even benched for the first time in his career.

It is clear that Odell Beckham Jr. is the best player the New York Giants have. Even if they “are listening” to trade offers, it would be crazy if they were to actually accept one of these offers. The best move is for the Giants to sign OBJ to a long-term deal, even if that continues to take time to come to an agreement.

Additionally, trading away Beckham Jr. would be public relations suicide, as a majority of the fan-base would be up in arms and would likely cause more drama than OBJ himself brings to the team. In a recent video, Gettleman expressed his concern over the media, as neither OBJ or his agent contacted the team to inform them of a holdout.

Neither Julio Jones, Antonio Brown, DeAndre Hopkins, or A.J. Green have won a Super Bowl, and OBJ is four years younger than most of them. He has plenty of time to earn himself a ring.

New York Giants’ Odell Beckham Jr. Prepared To Hold Out Amid Contract Negotiations

The New York Giants have a contract situation on their hands, and it revolves around star wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr.

Just a few months ago, Beckham Jr. made it clear that he wouldn’t engage in any hold-outs or take time away from the field to force a contract extension. I mean, after all, the guy has proved his worth on the field, but the better questions is: Can he prove it off the field?

According to NFL reporter Ian Rapaport, the Giants’ receiver will force his way into big money:

Negative publicity has surrounded the athlete in recent weeks, putting him between a rock and a hard place. His antics on the field have been well documented, and things are now starting to appear off the field as well. For the owner of a franchise to invest top dollar into a player, they have to ensure he won’t bring the franchise down with him due to silly behavioral issues.

Co-owner of the Giants, John Mara, stated recently:

“I guess my response to that is I’m tired of answering questions about Odell’s behavior,” Mara said, per the New York Post. “He knows what’s expected of him, and now it’s up to him.”

When asked about the affect of the video on OBJ’s mega-deal, Mara said:

“It wasn’t helpful.”

With the Giants and GM Dave Gettleman trying to change the culture in New York, Beckham Jr. is sure making his mark on their attempts. The last season’s New York Giants was thought to be a thing of the past, but inexcusable mistakes seem to be appearing from one player on the team, and that’s the star wide receiver.

Beckham Jr. deserves a big-time contract, but he must show that he can be the face of the franchise and not put its image in jeopardy. Only then will he receive what he seeks.

When asked if OBJ would still be a Giant next season:

“I can’t answer that one way or the other,’’ Mara said. “We’re certainly not shopping him, if that’s what you’re asking. When you’re coming off a season when you’re 3-13 and played as poorly as we played, I wouldn’t say anybody’s untouchable.’’

In regard to the video of him appearing to be in the vicinity of illegal drugs:

“Angry? No, I mean, more disappointed than angry,’’ Mara said. “I think too often he allows himself to get put in bad situations and he needs to use a little better judgment.’’

Woman in New York Giants’ Odell Beckham Jr. Video Identified

A controversial and possibly incriminating video that was leaked Friday, while New York Giants’ Odell Beckham Jr. was on his trip in your Europe. The video shows Odell in bed holding what looks to be some type of “cigar” while a mysterious woman was next time him holding a credit card with a white powdery substance in front of her. The video cuts out right as Odell says “Trying to get you to sleep with…”

Who is this mystery woman?

Laura Cuenca has recently come forward about her evening with the star receiver.

“I do not remember all of the evening, only that we met in a bar and then found ourselves at a hotel and we had passed the night together,” Laura Cuenca wrote in her native French during a private message exchange on Instagram,” says Cuenca.

They apparently met March 8, at the Le Queen nightclub in Paris and then ended up at the Four Seasons George V. She claims that Odell left the next morning for his flight to Madrid.

She also told the Daily News, “No, he did not take any drugs.”

What does this mean for Odell?

The Giants and the NFL are both aware of the video, but at this point neither have any comments. This video could not have come at a worse time for OBJ, as he is in the midst of contract negotiates with the New York Giants. He has already been spoken to by John Mara about his antics on the field, but this is the first time an off-field issue such as this has come up.

Video Shows OBJ Potentially Smoking And Girl Doing Coke

The New York Giants might be in a tad of PR trouble after a video leaked of Odell Beckham Jr. smoking and trying to convince a girl to sleep with his friend.

The video is blurry, and it could just be a mirage, but there is clearly something (looks like a blunt) in his hand on the bed. If this video can be cleared up and it shows the star receiver doing potentially illegal activities, it could cost him a long-term deal.

Take it at your own perspective, but this doesn’t look good for OBJ.

Here’s The Good News About Odell Beckham Jr’s Contract

The New York Giants have all of the leverage in the Odell Beckham Jr. long-term deal situation. With Beckham Jr. on the final year of his rookie deal, he will earn about $8.5 million in 2018.

How do the Giants have all the leverage?

General manager Dave Gettleman knows that he has the advantage on OBJ going into the contract negotiations since he still has one more year on his rookie deal, and the Giants can always franchise tag him in 2019.

That keeps Beckham Jr. on the team for two-more years guaranteed, and it is much more financially friendly than signing him to a long-term deal. The star receiver is expected to earn in the $20 million per-season range, while the franchise tag is about $15 million. Now, of course tagging him might not make him very happy in terms of the long-term deal he seeks, but it’s in the best interest of the Giants moving forward.

Before we continue, I want to ensure everyone that I’m on board to pay the man, since he’s arguably the most dynamic and electrifying receiver in football. But, we also have to be financially savvy when it comes to destroying our cap-space with a contract like his. Keeping him for two-more years for $23 million is far better than two-years for $40 million. He might be frustrated with receiving the franchise tag, but if the Giants are in a position to contend for the Super Bowl, he might be willing to take the $15 million move on.

Is anybody incredibly annoyed yet? These guys are complaining about making $15 million instead of $20 million… I’m just trying to put food on the table over here!

Extra:

Riding out the remainder of his contract is not only beneficial for the Giants financially, but also to ensure his injury won’t hinder him. Coming off an ankle injury as severe as the one Beckham Jr. suffered can often times affect a receiver. So, keeping him off a long-term contract will help the Giants see his overall worth (injury proneness, antics, etc.).

If The Giants’ Offense Looked Like This In 2018, Would You Be Happy?

For the New York Giants to make the most out of the 2018 NFL Draft, they will have to secure two players that can come in and start right away. Drafting a QB could be a solid plan for the future, but by the time he’s ready to take over the starting job from Eli Manning, it will be rebuilding time for the defense.

The Giants can solve their problems on offense this offseason, but it would mean that they are planning for the near-future and not three-four seasons down the line. Now, it’s not out of the question that the Giants can make a Rams-esque jump into relevancy, but it will take some masterful salary-cap tinkering from Dave Gettleman, and an amazing coach in Pat Shurmur.

Here’s what the best possible offensive would look like for the Giants in 2018:

QB: Eli Manning

RB: Saquon Barkley

TE: Evan Engram

TE: Rhett Ellison

WR: Odell Beckham Jr.

WR: Sterling Shepard

WR: Roger Lewis

RT: Ereck Flowers/Chad Wheeler

RG: Will Hernandez

C: Brett Jones

LG: Andrew Norwell

LT: Nate Solder

Now, one might look at the offensive line and say “how on earth can we get both Norwell and Solder?”

Well, Solder has struggled with injuries in recent years, but he’s the only left tackle worth exploring in free agency. His injuries will lower his stock and might land him in the $7-9 million per-season range, far less than a young and quality tackle would make. In addition to the injuries, Solder is 30-years old, putting his future playing career in question. Offering him a three-year, $30 million deal with $15 guaranteed and incentives might swing him the our way.

The trio:

I can’t get this image out of my head… Odell Beckham Jr., Evan Engram and Saquon Barkley taking the field at the same time. Does that not sounds like the most devastating offensive trio you’ve ever seen?

Barkley would force teams to stack the box on the nearly every play which would place man-coverage on Beckham Jr., or Sterling Shepard. This would open up the pass game significantly and it would enable an extremely dangerous screen game as well. Additionally, you’d have Engram running up the screen or facing off against linebackers… An easy task for the continuously improving tight end.

Our new right guard:

The Giants are reportedly very interest in offensive lineman Will Hernandez, who put up great numbers in the NFL Combine.

40-yard dash: 5.15 seconds

37 reps on bench press

24 inch vertical jump

104 inch broad jump

He weighs in at 348-pounds and is 6-foot-2. His draft stock has risen exponentially in recent days, making him a probable top-40 pick. Luckily, the Giants have the 34 overall pick in the draft (2nd pick in the second-round).

If the Giants can secure Hernandez in the second-round, they could be looking at one of the best drafts they’ve had in years.
