New York Giants: The Truth About Odell Beckham Jr’s Impending Mega-Deal

Look, there’s nobody that wants the New York Giants to re-sign Odell Beckham Jr. more than I do, so I’m going to keep it real for you guys. No BS, no New York Daily Newsing this story until the fan-base is rioting.

I want to take a look at Beckham from an outside perspective and consider what we are seeing now, and what we should expect for the future.

So, let’s get some of the facts out of the way:

Beckham has one more year on his rookie deal and will become a free agent in 2019 – that’s when other teams will come calling for his services. The Giants know this, and they have no reason to believe Beckham will decide to take his talents elsewhere… why? Because New York made him, and his stardom and brand takes a MASSIVE hit if he leaves the city that never sleeps.

The New York Giants have a new crop of rookies and a ton of talent on both sides of the ball. You won’t want to miss out on any breaking news stories, updates, or every-day activities! Sign up for FREE to receive premium content delivered straight to your email.

He wants to be in New York – for the money, for the fans, and because the Giants now have Saquon Barkley, who he calls is “little bruddah.” The team is on the rise and is building through solid youth and talented veterans. His motivation to leave New York is next to none… Where would he go? Houston? Nope, they have DeAndre Hopkins. Atlanta? Nope, Julio Jones. Baltimore? Yeah, OBJ is going to take his talents to Baltimore where they have a declining Joe Flacco and a running quarterback in Lamar Jackson.

The Giants will offer him his money, and he will accept a deal that seems fair to all parties involved. Beckham will never receive highest player in the league money, and no team will EVER offer that to him, especially after a season ending ankle injury.

So what are the expectations for his contract? And what will that big deal look like?

From a realistic point of view, if OBJ proves he’s 100% healthy and can perform at the level we’ve enjoyed that last few seasons, we will be looking at cash that may surpass Antonio Brown.

Brown received a four-year, $68 million deal, which pays him $17 million annually. Expect to see Beckham lock in a four-year, $72 million contract. That allocates $18 million per-year to the receiver, making him the highest paid receiver in the league – just what he wanted, after all.

Now, you might be wondering, how much does OBJ really bring to the team in terms of production, and does it match up with Eli Manning’s stats? Let’s take a look.

Between the years 2012-2015, Manning’s stats shifted significantly:

2012:

Passing yards: 3,948

Passing TD’s: 26

Interceptions: 15

2013:

Passing yards: 3,818

Passing TD’s: 18

Interceptions: 27

2014 (the year OBJ was drafted):

Passing Yards: 4,410

Passing TD’s: 30

Interceptions: 14

2015:

Passing yards: 4,432

Passing TD’s: 35

Interceptions: 14

From these stats you can see that Manning improved his passing yards by 500 the year Beckham joined the team. He also thew more touchdowns and less interceptions. His overall abilities as a quarterback improved, which attests to the value of Beckham and why he deserves to be paid a massive amount of money.

While paying a receiver $18 million per-year is often looked down upon, we are not talking about just any old pass-catcher… We are talking about a generational talent that can change the course of a game in the blink of an eye. In fact, OBJ was the sole reason the Giants made the playoffs in 2016, as he took three late-game passes to the house to secure the win.

The bottom line, Beckham Jr. is a Giant, and he ‘will’ get his money, so don’t listen to any of the news sources trying to make money off of YOU.

New York Giants: Why 2018 Could Be The Best Year Of Odell Beckham Jr.’s Career

I stand by this statement. “New York Giants‘ Odell Beckham Jr. could have the best year of his career in 2018.”

Beckham maintained the immense success and expectation that he set forth during his rookie season when he put up 1,305 yards and 12 touchdowns in 12 games. His amazing start still didn’t help him flourish when he finally made the playoffs against the Green Bay Packers in 2016. Odell can be seen as immature, an attention magnet, and not to mention extremely enthusiastic about the game. This year, that all changes, I believe that with Ben McAdoo exiled and Pat Shurmur as the new head coach, success is on the horizon for Big Blue.

Has OBJ matured?

Peeing like a dog celebration, boat trips, drug scares, erratic behavior… You name it and OBJ has probably done it, but 2018 has not only brought Saquon Barkley to the Giants, but a seemingly matured Beckham Jr. as well. Ever since Barkley joined the ranks of the team, OBJ has taken on a higher role, trying to set a good example for the rookies. With Barkley being as humble and down to earth as he is, it’s fair to say OBJ wasn’t going to bring out the party-animal in his new teammate. So maybe, it wasn’t Barkley that needed OBJ, but rather the opposite.

As far as Odell’s injury is concerned, we can blame McAdoo for putting his best player in the game against a far too enthusiastic Cleveland Browns team in the pre-season. He was rushed back and it subsequently led to his season ending injury that doomed the Giants from the start. All in all, while the injury was seemingly a mistake, McAdoo’s lack of offensive diversity and a rushed back Beckham Jr. was a recipe for disaster.

MUST READ: Predicting the first 3 games of the season

Why will 2018 be OBJ’s best year?

The Giantsoffense is completely revamped, and Saquon with Odell? Are you kidding? This tandem will for sure be quite the one-two punch for many years in this league as long as they stick together. Not to mention the receiving corps is back and healthy; Giants fans I never thought I’d see the day, but here it is! With Sterling Shepard, Evan Engram and countless other targets, the pressure is finally off Odell to make all the plays. But make no mistake, the pressure is still on for Odell to perform, and most importantly, stay healthy. Odell is ready to be unleashed, but this time, it’ll be done the right way.

Providing an above average running back and several receiving targets will allow OBJ to garner one-on-one coverage and expose deep routes. Free safeties will be forced to honor the running game and short crossing routes with Shepard over the middle, but also keep Engram on a tight leash on the seam.

Just imagine the confusion of a defense with Shepard running a short post route across the middle, Engram bolting up the seam of the field, and Beckham with his classic fake button hook and go route… In addition to that, you have Saquon ‘Frickin’ Barkley that can catch as well, if not better than some receivers. OBJ will have a field day against any corner forced to test their luck against one of the most dynamic and electrifying players in the NFL.

What type of stats should we expect from Beckham?

Receptions: 95

Yards: 1,350

TD’s: 12

Passing TD’s: 1 (Yes, I’m calling a passing touchdown from Beckham)

Should New York Giants Sit Star Receiver During OTAs?

Injuries are always a concern during offseason programs and workouts, as forcing a player to overwork their bodies and tempt the football gods is always a dangerous fate.

The latest casualty to a serious injury was San Diego Chargers tight end Hunter Henry. The rising TE suffered a torn ACL during OTAs, which leaves a huge question mark for other teams, but in this case, the New York Giants.

The New York Giants have a new crop of rookies and a ton of talent on both sides of the ball. You won’t want to miss out on any breaking news stories, updates, or every-day activities! Sign up for FREE to receive premium content delivered straight to your email.

The question is: Should Big Blue keep Odell Beckham Jr. safe and ensure he remains healthy, or test his ankle and potentially risk his availability for the season?

In my opinion, let him play. You know what they say, “practice makes perfect,” and as Beckham heals from a broken ankle last year, his workload will not be heavy to begin with. Players need to be on the practice field honing their craft, so sitting and resting them isn’t an option. They’re paid to play football, so let them play and continue to improve and make the product of the game even more exciting.

Sep 11, 2016; Arlington, TX, USA; New York Giants wide receiver Odell Beckham, Jr. (13) before the game against the Dallas Cowboys at AT&T Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Erich Schlegel-USA TODAY Sports

Head coach Pat Shurmur stated earlier in the week, according to NJ.com:

“He’s champing at the bit wanting to get out and do more than we’re allowing him to do at this point, but I think we’re just trying to make sure that everything is healed to the fullest before we put him out there.”

During Beckham’s first OTAs practice, he participated in designed drills that were specific to his rehabilitation. He stayed away from any 7-on-7, or 11-on-11 work, as testing his ankle beyond the necessary workload would be foolish. Allowing him to heal slowly and correctly will be the priority for the star receiver, as the Giants will need his services in 2018.

Losing Beckham has proved to be detrimental to Eli Manning’s statistics; 66 touchdowns, 29 interceptions, 91.5 rating with, and 14 touchdowns, 14 interceptions, 75.0 rating without (2015-17).

The proof is in the numbers, and the Giants want very badly for Beckham to return to his old self – so they can pay him an exorbitant amount of money. Ensuring he remains healthy though OTAs will be the first step in that process.

EXTRA:

Addition ACL tears during OTAs include:

Rams defensive end: Morgan Fox

Eagles linebacker: Paul Worrilow

Panthers running back: Fozzy Whittaker

Saquon Barkley’s Primary Mentor Isn’t Odell Beckham Jr.

It is no secret that New York Giants’ Odell Beckham Jr. and Saquon Barkley have become friends. In fact, they have been training together since before Saquon was drafted. But they have gotten a lot closer since the draft and Odell has offered help and tips to be a professional.

While OBJ may be taking Saquon Barkley under his wing a bit, he may not be his only mentor on the team. Who is then?

The New York Giants have a new crop of rookies and a ton of talent on both sides of the ball. You won’t want to miss out on any breaking news stories, updates, or every-day activities! Sign up for FREE to receive premium content delivered straight to your email.

Saquon on learning from Eli Manning:

Eli Manning is as knowledgeable as a coach when it comes to running on offense, and Saquon knows that. It is smart to train to learn as much as you can from your future Hall of Fame quarterback to be the best he can be.

While OBJ and Saquon Barkley may be becoming close friends, Eli Manning may be the true mentor while Saquon learns to be a true professional. While Saquon may think his questions could be annoying to Eli, I am sure that is not true at all. Eli Manning is a true team player and wants to help everybody be the best that can be.

Barkley will be an influential factor in the offense next season, and learning the offense will be of the utmost priority. Manning is the one player on the offense that knows where everybody needs to be at all times, and Barkley will need to soak in all of the knowledge he can get his hands on.

There’s no doubt that the young running back has ever had a more intelligent and talented QB to work with, which presents him with a rare opportunity. OTAs represents the first time the two have been able to work with one another, and its also the beginning of a blossoming relationship on the offense. While Manning and OBJ already have a stellar relationship, they’re both going to need to make room for one more to join the party.

How Will Odell Beckham Jr.’s Role Change Under HC Pat Shurmur?

The New York Giants hired former Minnesota Vikings offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur to take over their vacant head coaching position soon after the 2017 season. The  hire of Shurmur was filled with speculation and worry, but the idea has developed nicely in the heads of Giants fans and players alike.

The primary questions that arose after the hiring of Shurmur were: Will Eli Manning be the quarterback in 2018? And how will Odell Beckham Jr.’s role change in the new offense?

For this example, we will take a look at the Vikings’ receivers to analyze how Beckham Jr. will see his role expand and develop in 2018.

Let’s take Adam Thielen for example — In 2016, the Viking’s receiver racked up 969 yards and five touchdowns. Fast forward to 2017, Thielen managed 1276 yards (with Stefan Diggs healthy) and four touchdowns, all with backup quarterback, Case Keenum.

[sc name=”StubHub”]

A majority of the offensive success the Vikings enjoyed came by the arm of Keenum, who subsequently lost his most lethal weapon in Dalvin Cook early on in the season. Keenum saw his completion percentage jump from 60.9 with the Rams in 2016 to 67.9 with the Vikings. This can be derived from the amount of high-quality throws Keenum made, and this will also translate to the Giants and Eli Manning as well. Consider this: Two-time Super Bowl winning quarterback Vs. undrafted quarterback… Who has more potential?

Ultimately, if Manning improves, Beckham Jr. will benefit too. While Thielen and Beckham are not easily compared, their skills can be analyzed to realize how Shurmur extracted/can extract their full potential.

Let’s take a look at this clip for a moment. Thielen is lined up on the exterior with man-coverage. OBJ will enjoy man-coverage more frequently with the addition of Saquon Barkley and a developing Evan Engram. The Vikings had Latavius Murray, Cook, and Stefan Diggs to complement Thielen. Having a broad range of weapons forces the defense to commit to stopping the run and to leave the offenses receivers in man-coverage.

The New York Giants have a new crop of rookies and a ton of talent on both sides of the ball. You won’t want to miss out on any breaking news stories, updates, or every-day activities! Sign up for FREE to receive premium content delivered straight to your email.

Beckham is one of the league’s best route-runners and quickest from the line of scrimmage. His ability to sell his body one way and take off past the cornerback is nearly unparalleled. That’s also Thielen’s skill, and Shurmur noticed that.

This clip shows Thielen’s best routes of the 2017 season, and all are eerily similar in relation to Beckham’s strengths.

The biggest difference will be the use of the quarterback, since Keenum is far more mobile than Manning. Expect to see a lot of lateral movement from Beckham off the line of scrimmage — wide receiver screens, comeback routes (play-action), slant routes, and the occasional deep post. I would also anticipate a heavy dosage of fade routes in the endzone to Beckham — This is one of Manning’s strengths.

New York Giants Odell Beckham Jr – goat or G.O.A.T. – part 2

There are likely two possible career arcs for New York Giants wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. Part 2 looks at the possibility that OBJ goes down a path of Epic Greatness.

What if Odell Beckham Jr. decided to do everything within his power to eliminate the distractions and do everything it takes to achieve a revolutionary Hall of Fame career?

He has the speed, the hands, and the skill to put up historic numbers. In fact, the early portion of his career included several “fastest to” records.

[sc name=”Donate”]

How should OBJ approach his career to do on the field at the WR position, that fellow Giants great Lawrence Taylor did at the outside linebacker position?

Put aside all distractions:

OBJ the celebrity takes a 10 year hiatus. See Drake next in say 2028. Invite him to your HOF induction in 2033 if you want. No more time thinking up TD celebrations. Handing the football to the ref was good enough for Walter Payton good enough for you. All urination and other relief activities takes place in private. Save the French non English speaking club girls for 2029. You don’t need them right now.

In short, dedicate yourself completely to football for the next 10 years.

[sc name=”NYG Articles Thumbnail”]

Dedicate yourself to winning.

State your desire to be the face of the New York Giants. Seek the Captaincy. Assume the role of proper mentor to the young players.
There has been no greater lead by example role model than Eli Manning. Beckham should be that guy. If he too can lead by proper example and stay off the back pages for everything except MVP awards and to collect Super Bowl trophies, the sky is the limit.

The Giants want to build around Beckham. The Giants want to pay him. The Giants can probably see G.O.A.T. potential in this player. It is Empire Sports Media’s opinion that as with Eli Manning, the Giants envision a scenario where Beckham wears one uniform, enters the Giants Ring of Honor, the National Football League Hall of Fame and makes record amounts of money for a WR.

goat or G.O.A.T.? Based on the short track record to date, Odell Beckham Jr. is looking more like a goat that the Giants may very well be forced to trade away. Trade away before he does something irreparably stupid that destroys his trade value.

However, OBJ is young and there is still time. He isn’t actually guilty of any serious transgression to date. He has the skill and talent to be the best. The next step would be to stop declaring he won’t play without a contract, but rather to state he will do everything in his power to make it impossible for John Mara not to give him whatever contract he wants. Giants Nation hope he chooses the latter.

Odell Beckham Jr. Already Creating Relationship With Stud Penn State Runningback

The New York Giants could easily decide to spend their No. 2 overall pick in the first-round on Penn State running back Saquon Barkley.

Barkley is a potential generational talent at the next level, which would give the Giants two unparalleled talents on offense for Eli Manning to work with. Head coach Pat Shurmur would have a plethora of weapons at his disposal with Engram, Beckham Jr., Barkley and Shepard.

Maybe the Giants brass has sent OBJ on a mission:

Maybe, just maybe, the Giants’ regime has sent Beckham Jr. on a mission to create a rapport with Barkley, as they want the offense to have chemistry when the Giants select him at No. 2 overall. Very optimistic but hell, who knows?

Barkley had great things to say about OBJ when asked about potentially playing alongside him with the Giants.

[sc name=”NYG Articles Thumbnail”]

“That would be special,” Barkley told the New York Post. “I admire Odell’s game. He’s a walking highlight. Everyone knows the one-handed plays, but he can catch a slant and take it 80 yards. Not only Odell, [Sterling] Shepard, the tight end [Evan Engram], they’re all special, they’re all talented.

[give_form id=”10325″]

“If I was fortunate enough to get drafted to a team like the Giants, I feel like if I was able to have the success that I had in college, I feel like that would be a good fit. But there, you add a running game, it’s like, what can you do on the defensive side of the ball? You have a veteran, established quarterback, Eli Manning, who’s proven himself, won two Super Bowls, that you know the guy’s gonna get the job done. It would be special to learn from guys like him and Odell. Obviously, any team that drafts me, I feel like that’s a good fit.”

Barkley is a class act and knows his contribution to Big Blue would be exactly what they need to reach another level of success. Creating a relationship with Beckham Jr. only gets the ball rolling for a potential future of star-power.

The Giants, Odell Beckham Jr. And The Wide Receiver Cap Percentage

There has been quite of bit drama and speculation surrounding the New York Giants and Odell Beckham Jr. as of late. Everybody and anybody has been speaking out and voicing their opinions.

There are wide ranging thoughts on what the Giants should do with Odell Beckham Jr. Many Giants fans when hearing of a possible OBJ trade had a conniption, while the OBJ haters rejoiced.

The goal of this article is to allow people to set their biases aside and simply look at the data. The first set of data I will be focusing on has to do with successful teams and the cap hit percentage of their number 1 wide receiver.

[sc name=”NYG Articles Thumbnail”]

Before we do that, let’s examine what an Odell Beckham’s’ possible contract extension would look like against the cap.

Below I identified three possible scenarios.

Odell Beckham Jr. and his possible cap percentage

Yearly Salary Estimated Cap 2019 Cap Percentage
14.9 million (Julio Jones 2019 cap number) 190 Million 7.84%
20 Million (reported asking price for OBJ) 190 Million 10.47%
22.165 Million (Antonio Brown’s 2019 cap number) 190 Million 11.66%

The next set of numbers we will look at has to do with the last 24 Super Bowl Champions, their #1 wide receiver and their respective cap percentage.

Super Bowl winning #1 wide receivers and their cap percentage

Year Name Salary Cap %
1994 Jerry Rice 2.9 Million 8.54%
1995 Michael Irvin 1.9 Million 5.32%
1996 Robert Brooks 1.7 Million 4.17%
1997 Anthony Miller 1.3 Million 3.20%
1998 Anthony Miller 1.4 Million 2.77%
1999 Isaac Bruce 2.9 Million 5.11%
2000 Jermaine Lewis 1.6 Million 2.68%
2001 Terry Glenn 2.3 Million 3.9%
2002 Keyshawn Johnson 3.3 Million 4.72%
2003 Troy Brown 2.4 Million 3.27%
2004 Troy Brown 3.2 Million 3.96%
2005 Hines Ward 2.1 Million 2.54%
2006 Marvin Harrison 6.4 Million 6.27%
2007 Amani Toomer 4.9 Million 4.54%
2008 Hines Ward 6.7 Million 5.78%
2009 Marques Colston 3.6 Million 2.99%
2010 Donald Driver 5.9 Million No Cap
2011 Hakeem Nicks 1.6 Million 1.34%
2012 Anquan Boldin 7.5 Million 6.24%
2013 Sidney Rice 9.7 Million 7.89%
2014 Danny Amendola 4.7 Million 3.53%
2015 Demaryius Thomas 13.2 Million 9.1%
2016 Chris Hogan 5.5 million 3.72%
2017 Alshon Jeffrey 10 Million 6.23%
Total Average 4.88%

The two biggest cap percentages of #1 wide receivers are as followed.  First, in 1994 with Jerry Rice at 8.56%. Then, in 2015 with Demaryius Thomas at 9.1%. You will also find that in the past 24 years (excluding the cap less 2010) the average cap percentage of a #1 wide receiver on a super bowl winning team is 4.88%.

To analyze a little deeper we will take a look at each playoff teams top wide receiver cap hit from the last three years.

2015

Team Top Wide Receiver Cap %
Bengals 10.25%
Broncos 9.1%
Cardinals 7.48%
Redskins 6.93%
Vikings 6.73%
Steelers 5.12%
Packers 3.77%
Patriots 3.29%
Seahawks 3.16%
Chiefs 2.4%
Texans 1.72%
Panthers 1.34%
Total Average 5.1%

2016

Team Top Wide Receiver Cap %
Falcons 10.34%
Cowboys 8.51%
Chiefs 8.13%
Steelers 7.85%
Raiders 6.69%
Packers 5.94%
Seahawks 5.32%
Lions 4.72%
Patriots 3.72%
Giants 2.84%
Dolphins 1.63%
Texans 1.6%
Total Average 5.6%

2017

Team Top Wide Receiver Cap %
Rams 9.55%
Falcons 8.36%
Steelers 8.34%
Eagles 6.23%
Jaguars 4.29%
Titans 3.93%
Vikings 2.44%
Saints 1.86%
Patriots 1.86%
Panthers 1.31%
Chiefs 1.07%
Bills .79%
Total Average 4.16%

The average cap percentage of #1 wide receivers for playoff teams over the last three years came in at 4.95%. That number is very similar to the wide receiver cap percentages of the last 24 Super Bowl champions which came in at 4.88%.

It’s fair to assume that most successful teams do not dedicate a large cap percentage to #1 wide receivers. In fact, if the Giants gave Odell Beckham Jr. 20 million dollars a season then the cap percentage hit would be twice the amount of the average super bowl champions over the past 24 years.

Odell Beckham Jr. Raises the Level of Play for Eli Manning:

Now we can take a look at Odell Beckham Jr.s effect on the Giants’ offense, in particular relation to Eli Manning. The following stats show a comparison of Eli Manning’s stats the three years he was with OBJ and the three years he was without him prior to being drafted.

Year Comp % YPY TD PY INT PY QBR
2014-2016 (With OBJ) 62.9% 4290 30 15 90.6
2011-2013 (Without OBJ) 59.5% 4233 24 19 83.3
+/- Differential with OBJ +3.4% +57 +6 -4 +7.3

The following chart will represent the Giants’ offensive ranks in the NFL in regards to points and yards. The chart will represent the same years.

The NFL draft is approaching and the New York Giants can go several different directions. You don’t want to miss out on any BREAKING news! Sign up for FREE here.

Year Points Ranking Yards Ranking
2014-2016 (With OBJ) 15th 14th
2011-2013 (Without OBJ) 14th 16th
+/- Differential with OBJ -1 +2

Odell Beckham Jr.s presence in a Giant uniform cannot be understated. He has raised the level of play of a two time super bowl winning quarterback. In fact, if you were able to pick and pull Eli Manning’s three best statistical seasons without OBJ, his numbers still would not compare to what he has been able to do with him.

I then reviewed Odell Beckham Jr.s game logs from each of the first three seasons. It is clear to see that he was almost solely responsible for 7 wins. The effect he has on a football game is unparalleled.

Odell Beckham Jr./ Randy Moss Comparison

All this commotion regarding OBJ  had me reminiscing about another great wide receiver early in his career that sounds eerily familiar to what is going on with OBJ.

From 1998 to 2003, Randy Moss was one of the most dynamic wide receivers to ever step on the football field. He averaged 88 receptions, 1396 yards and 13 touchdowns a season over the course of that time.

During those years he was also involved in some controversy on and off the field. In 2001 he verbally abused corporate sponsors on a team bus which sent him to anger management. The following year he bumped a traffic officer with his car, knocking her to the ground. Then, in the next year, he was fined $5,000 for his part in a fight with the Detroit Lions then another $5000 for spiking the ball at Lions Cornerback, Dre Bly’s feet.

In 2004, he had a bit of a down year for his standards mainly in part due to injury. He battled a hamstring injury which held him out of three games and slowed him down in many others.  In 2005, he was traded to the Oakland Raiders.

Odell Beckham Jr./ Randy Moss Effect on Team Success

Although there are striking similarities between the two wide receivers, we all know Odell Beckham’s’ issues pale in comparison to Randy Moss.

From all accounts, OBJ is well liked by his teammates, does great things off the field and is considered to be a good guy. So what is the most important question to be asked in regards to Odell Beckham’s future on the New York Giants?

Can they win with him and what would the ramifications be if they moved on from him?

Let’s take a look and compare how the Vikings and Giants fared in terms of record before the drafted these prolific receivers and how they fared with them.

Teams avg. yearly win with player Team avg. yearly losses with player
Randy Moss

1998-2004/ 7 Years

9.1 6.9
Odell Beckham Jr.

2014-2016/ 3 Years

7.6 8.3

Team avg. yearly wins without player Team avg. yearly losses without player
Minnesota Vikings(1992-1997) 7 years 9.1 6.9
New York Giants (2011-2013) 3 years 8.3 7.6

This data may have been the most eye opening. Although Randy Moss and Odell Beckham Jr. have such a great impact on the game, their teams record did not vastly improve with them there. In fact, the Giants had a more successful three years prior to drafting Odell Beckham Jr. than they did with him.

Knowing that, there are other factors that affected the win/loss record for the Giants over the course of those six years. The Giants record would have probably been a lot worse without him.

What Does This All Mean?

To be honest… I don’t know.

In my opinion:

There is not a more talented player in the NFL than Odell Beckham Jr. The things he is able to do on a football field are simply amazing. Odell is on the fast track to becoming a first ballot Hall of famer. As a Giant fan, there is nothing I would like more than to see them retire #13.

On the other hand:

Would it make sense to dedicate so much cap space to a wide receiver?  It does not seem like successful teams do that.

The NFL draft is approaching and the New York Giants can go several different directions. You don’t want to miss out on any BREAKING news! Sign up for FREE here.

The way I see it is that the Giants have only two realistic options.

  1. Extend Odell Beckham Jr. and pay him the money he is looking for. In addition to that they need to identify who there quarterback of the future is (whether its Davis Webb or whoever they draft #2 overall)  and follow the same strategy that the Seahawks and Eagles have recently implemented. Have a young, successful quarterback on a rookie deal and pay other positions.
  2. Trade Odell Beckham Jr. for a haul of draft picks and begin the rebuild.

This decision will have a great impact on the New York Giants for the foreseeable future. I for one am glad I do not have to make it. I do however, trust Dave Gettleman and the new regime. They will make the best decision for the New York Giants moving forward.

New York Giants Odell Beckham Jr – Goat or G.O.A.T – part 1

There are likely two possible career arcs for New York Giants wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. Part 1 looks at the possibility that OBJ goes down a detrimental path, squandering incredible God given talents.

Is OBJ confused? Does he view himself as a once in a generation NFL football player who can revolutionize the WR positon the way that Lawrence Taylor did for the outside linebacker position or is he an entertainer? One of the elite position players in the league or a Drake side kick?

New York Giants are a no nonsense classy organization:

For well more than a decade, the NYG have been defined by the face of Eli Manning. A dignified, no nonsense player who comports himself with class on and off the field. Manning has managed to get paid, to win super bowls and to avoid controversy for the most part. He has been all about the business of winning, much in the Derek Jeter mold.

Beckham is wearing out the New York Giants. Is he Drake’s buddy? Is he a public urinator? An out of control thug on the field (Dave Gettleman had a great seat for that infamous meltdown versus his Panthers)? Is he a guy apt to go party in Miami in the lead up to a playoff game he not only lost, but developed a sudden case of the drops? What is Beckham thinking bringing strange woman and their translator into his hotel room camera phone at the ready? None of this is the Giants way.

Do the Giants pay this man over $100 million to be the face of the organization?

Not now. No way. Ownership has no idea what his commitment is to the Giants way. The Giants are a sub .500 team on his watch. He is a risk.

The hard salary cap league that is the NFL does not allow you to recover from a $100 million dollar roster error easily. If Beckham can’t figure himself out and mature, he could be the goat that causes an uncompetitive roster for years.

Do the Giants trade Beckham?

Do not trade him now. Ownership needs to put Beckham on notice. Declare who you are OBJ! Show us you are worthy. Dedicate yourself full time to be being a great Giants player for life. Right now, Beckman would not provide a sell high return, I don’t think, however, if Carl Banks (see tweet is correct) that some team will offer 3 first round picks plus, PULL.

Otherwise, If Beckham wants to sit out, he is under contract. Fine him. Suspend him when and if that becomes possible. He is not the G.O.A.T. just yet. Or, if he chooses to play, have him audition for that contract. Tag him if necessary multiple times, until we know who we are paying over $100 million to.

Part 2 will examine the path Odell Beckham should take. The path he deserves for himself and commensurate with his potential for G.O.A.T. greatness. Ultimately, the choice will be his!

PLOT TWIST: The Odell Beckham Jr. Nonsense Ends Here! A Reminder To Fellow Fans

The New York Giants have been bombarded by negative media in regard to Odell Beckham Jr. and his potential send-off the last few days.

Recently, we witnessed Giants’ co-owner John Mara make some deliberately ghastly statements in regard to Beckham Jr. and the potential to see him traded. Mara did however make sure to express his concern over the fake-stories circulating the media, stating:

“Do I want him to be traded? Absolutely not. I want him to be a Giant. I can’t promise that’s going to happen. We’re not looking to get rid of him, OK?”

In the end, Mara has the last say in Beckham Jr. being traded or not, and it seems as though he’s leaning towards ‘not’. Mara did also say that he doesn’t see any harm in teams calling to ask about the star wide receiver. And for all of us that don’t want to OBJ to depart, we should be okay with this too.

The Giants aren’t going to just hand over a generation talent for a pack of cigarettes and a snickers bar; they’re going to ask for a No. 1 overall pick’s ransom, and then some.

The latest rumor is:

The Giants are asking for a two first-round picks for OBJ and some additional picks this year. Please, let a team give up two first-round picks and a second and third-rounder to take on a $20 million per-year contract.

There’s no team in the league that’s going to sacrifice that many picks for a receiver that has world-class talent, but also brings a lot of media drama wherever he goes.

The most important thing to remember:

GUYS, they’re called ‘rumors’ for a reason! None of it is actually ‘TRUE’.

So, that being said, the most important thing to remember right now is that it’s the offseason, and every year a crazy story like this is conjured up to earn some additional revenue.

Beckham Jr. isn’t going anywhere, and the more we fuel it the more we are making money for the god awful New York Daily News and their crappy reporters. Not to mention the other networks that have been picking up the story and forcing it down our throats.

Take a deep breath and realize that everything is good once again for the Giants. We have signed a stud left tackle, we have the No. 2 overall pick in the draft, Jerry Reese and Ben McAdoo have been banished to a far away land… Smile! The best is yet to come.
