There’s One Very Interesting Fact About Every New York Giants Signing

The New York Giants have made various free agent signing over the course of the past 24-hours. They include Nate Solder, Teddy Williams, Patrick Omameh, Jonathan Stewart, etc.

The similarity:

General manager Dave Gettleman has made it apparent that solving the culture crises for the Giants was at the top of his priority list, and that’s where this interesting fact comes into play.

Now, the signing of Stewart may have caught us off guard, but he brings much more than just talent at running back to the Giants. He brings veteran leadership and knowledge on how to make it to the playoffs.

Every signing Gettleman has secured come from playoff teams; the Patriots, Jaguars, Panthers…

[display-posts tag=”NYG” posts_per_page=”3″ image_size=”thumbnail”]

Coincidence, I think not. This is clearly a major overhaul of the culture, and not the players. Bringing in guys that are accustomed to being in the playoffs immediately helps the younger players change their mindset.

Adding players like Solder who have been to numerous Super Bowls delivers a huge boost to a team that suffered a 3-13 season just a year ago. Playoff teams require teams to be in sync and players that are willing to buy into the system. They understand that the process requires grit and cohesion in the locker room.

New York Giants: Tyrann Mathieu Is A Possibility, Here’s why

The New York Giants lack a true safety in the defensive backfield, and yes, I know Darian Thompson is still back there missing tackles and blowing coverage’s.

Thompson was a third-round pick out of Boise State with WAY top high expectations entering the NFL. He missed virtually his entire rookie season due to injury, and returned looking like half of what we expected him to be.

So, can we all agree that an upgrade is needed to solidify a defense that already has Janoris Jenkins, Landon Collins, Alec Ogletree, Damon Harrison, JPP, and Olivier Vernon?

Adding a player like Mathieu to a defense with several Pro-Bowl caliber players is extremely enticing, and come to think of it, more than possible.

How can they afford him?

[display-posts tag=”NYG” posts_per_page=”3″ image_size=”thumbnail”]

The biggest issue with signing Mathieu is the money, and we all know the Giants have none of that. In fact, after the Nate Solder, Kareem Martin, Patrick Omameh and Alec Ogletree signings, they probably have close to zero dollars left.

But, by cutting players like Brandon Marshall, Dwayne Harris, Ray-Ray Armstrong, and maybe even John Jerry, they can add some much needed cap-relief.

Lucky for the Giants, Mathieu isn’t after the money, he’s after a Super Bowl ring.

New York is the big stage, and we are talking Giants here guys, not Jets. The Jets are have been designated New Jersey because, well, who the hell likes New Jersey?

This is where Mathieu can shine, and with the new regime in the place, including his familiarity’s with defensive coordinator James Bettcher, it’s the perfect landing spot. Although the Giants may not be willing to give him top dollar, he can turn their defense into one of the league’s most feared units.

Additionally, it would allow Gettleman to focus strictly on the offense going into the NFL draft. Can anybody say: “Quick turnaround?”

How The Giants Can Secure A Top Lineman And Barkley or QB In The Draft

With the signing of former New England Patriots’ LT Nate Solder, the New York Giants are on the up-and-up when it comes to the offensive line. Ereck Flowers will no longer be putting Eli Manning’s health in jeopardy every five-seconds!

But, there’s a lot of work that remains to be done on the line, and this idea offers some security in the first round.

The trade-up:

The Giants already acquire the second-overall pick in the second round of the NFL Draft, putting them in a great spot to grab a solid offensive lineman to go with their No. 2 overall pick.

Now, Notre Dame guard Quenton Nelson will certainly be off the board, but there are other prospects to choose from. In this scenario, we are going to take a look at UTEP guard Will Hernandez.

https://twitter.com/BillyM_91/status/957341089630912513

Hernandez is a bull of a lineman, yet he has small arms and hands, placing physical limitations on his abilities. But his love for the game and unparalleled work ethic is one of the most enticing things about him, and that could be enough for Dave Gettleman to move up in the draft to snag him.

NFL draft profiles have him going in the 1-2 rounds, making him a potential first-round pick. If the Giants want to land him and he’s heading towards the end of the first-round, they might want to consider trading into the first to grab him.

The offer:

The Giants can potentially offer their remaining fourth-round pick to grab Hernandez. Now, this would only leave them with three picks in the draft, but it would be well worth the haul.

Gaining a starting guard and the value from whomever is picked at the No. 2 spot puts the Giants in great shape moving forward.

What’re your thoughts on this potential trade-up?

Imagine a haul including Saquon Barkley AND Will Hernandez… That would be one of the best drafts for the Giants in years.

New York Giants Sign Former Jaguars Starting Left Guard

The New York Giants are surely dedicated to fixing their broken offensive line, and general manager Dave Gettleman has made that apparent in free agency.

Gettleman splashed the cash early Wednesday on Patriots’ LT Nate Solder. The deal is worth $62 million and will allocate $10 million in cap-space to Solder in 2018.

The new signing:

Jacksonville Jaguars’ Patrick Omameh is the second offensive line signing of the day, adding value to the left guard position after the supposed departure of Justin Pugh.

[display-posts tag=”NYG” posts_per_page=”4″ image_size=”thumbnail”]

Omameh started in 13 games for the Jaguars in 2017 and is only 28 years-old. Gettleman has approached free agency with a a priority of changing the culture surrounding the team. He’s yet to sign a player that wasn’t on a playoff team last season.

According to PFF, Omameh graded out with a 53.6, ranking him as the #36 guard in the NFL.

How The Giants Can Pursue And Land S Tyrann Mathieu

Imagine this New York Giants fans:

Janoris Jenkins, Landon Collins, Darian Thompson, Tyrann Mathieu, Alec Ogletree, Damon Harrison, Jason Pierre-Paul, Olivier Vernon, Dalvin Tomlinson… Must I continue?

That’s a Super Bowl quality defense right there, and yes, I’m getting ahead of myself… But MY GOD THAT LOOKS GOOD.

Now, how can we manage to grab former Arizona Cardinals safety Mathieu in free agency? It’s going to start with pay-cuts.

There’s no doubt that Eli Manning has more than enough money to go around, and his $22.2 million cap-hit must be lowered. Let’s say he takes a pay-cut of $8 million,  and the Giants release Dwayne Harris and Brandon Marshall. That opens up about $15 million in cap-space; more than enough to grab the veteran safety.

How good is Mathieu?

In 2017, Mathieu didn’t miss a single game, as he recorded two interceptions, forced one fumble, and managed 66 total tackles. In other words, the guy is a beast.

[display-posts tag=”NYG” posts_per_page=”3″ image_size=”thumbnail”]

Adding him to a defense with Landon Collins and Janoris Jenkins in the backfield would be scary.

But remember, this all comes down to how much money the Giants can open  up via pay-cuts and the releasing of players who ultimately need to be replaced. Additionally, we need to take into consideration how much money must be allocated for draft picks.

Giants Make Two Big Free Agency Signings On Opening day

The New York Giants surely weren’t demoralized after losing out on All-Pro left guard Andrew Norwell to the Jacksonville Jaguars.

To kick-off the first legal day to sign players, the Giants and general manager Dave Gettleman went straight after positions of need.

Gettleman has earned the signings of former Arizona Cardinal’s LB Kareem Martin, and left tackle for the Patriots Nate Solder.

The Martin Signing:

The financial details aren’t yet available, but Martin’s signing gives the Giants a boost of familiarity in the middle of the field, as he’s a James Bettcher product.

Bringing in a guy that knows the new system is a good look for Gettleman, as he’s approaching this free agency with a steady mindset. Signing players because they’re good on a specific team doesn’t mean they will work well in any given system.

[display-posts tag=”NYG” posts_per_page=”3″ image_size=”thumbnail”]

His addressing of the linebacker corps with physical players is a good start, and Martin will play a key role on the special teams as well.

The Solder Signing:

Solder is coming to New York! But for a hefty price-tag…

Grabbing the left tackle will surely solidify the line for Eli Manning and co. but is it worth $15 million per-season? We will find out.

Solder played in every game last season, suring up a line that was oft-injured in 2017. He brings experience, grit and intelligence to a line that is made up of predominantly youth going forward.

But holy crap… $15 million per-season is absurd.

The bad news:

The Giants have about zero dollars left to play with. Cuts WILL be made.

New York Giants Get Good News In Race For Saquon Barkley

For all of you fans that believe the New York Giants should select Saquon Barkley with the No. 2 overall pick, you may have just gotten your wish.

New development:

The only team standing in the way of the Giants and Barkley was the Cleveland Browns. Well, the once lowly Browns are now planning to sign former 49er’s running back Carlos Hyde.

Hyde signed a three-year, $15 million deal, earning him $5 million per-season. Now, that’s nowhere in the stud running back range, but with other priority needs, he is likely going to be given the opportunity to start alongside Duke Johnson.

The Browns were keen on keeping Johnson, their third-down and pass back. Grabbing Barkley with the first-overall pick would only push Johnson further down the ladder, and bringing on Hyde nearly solidifies the claim that they will be addressing another position of need in the draft.

[display-posts tag=”NYG” posts_per_page=”3″ image_size=”thumbnail”]

Other free agency moves:

Cleveland also brought in quarterback Tyrod Taylor from the Buffalo Bills, which may sway opinions in terms of their potential to take a quarterback at No. 1. It’s possible they draft a player like Wyomings’ Josh Allen to begin developing. He could be the heir to the throne after Taylor’s contract expires.

But for the Giants, it opens up a world of possibilities. Having their choice of players at No. 2 allows them to either take arguably the most polarizing player in the last decade of NFL Drafts, or they can trade out of the spot to acquire more value. Or, they can always take a quarterback if they believe Davis Webb isn’t the future of the team.

In other words, it puts the Giants in the drivers seat, and that’s exactly what we need to hope for.

New York Giants Sign Former Panthers Running Back

The New York Giants have signed former Panthers Running back Jonathan Stewart, according to Adam Schefter.

[display-posts tag=”NYG” posts_per_page=”5″]

The new signing:

[display-posts tag=”NYG” posts_per_page=”3″ image_size=”thumbnail”]

The signing shouldn’t sway your opinion on the potential for the Giants to snag Penn State running back Saquon Barkley with the No. 2 overall pick. Stewart brings veteran leadership, familiarity with the Giants’ offensive coordinator Mike Shula, and a hard-nose attitude.

Stewart played in 15-games last season, rushing for 680-yards and six scores. His usage may take a dip being that he’s 30 years-old, but we can assume he will fill the role of Orleans Darkwa who will likely be walking in free agency.

Speculating What The New York Giants 3-4 Defense May Look Like

With free-agency among us, there is a lot of change coming for the New York Giants defense. A look at what going from a 4-3 defense to a 3-4 may require some outside-the-box thinking.

With a linebacker core that has been the glaring hole in the Giants defense, new GM Dave Gettleman began to address that quickly by trading for proven veteran Alec Ogletree. But this is not the only change coming for the Giants roster.

[display-posts tag=”NYG” posts_per_page=”3″ image_size=”thumbnail”]

Linebacker

Looking at what might change for the defensive line and linebacker core, I cannot help but think about Jason Pierre-Paul and Olivier Vernon and what their role may become. Both OV and JPP are proven edge rushers and can both play the run as well; both have played with the hand in the dirt and off the line as well.

Although their pass-coverage has gone fairly untested, it is possible that they could transition into an edge rusher/ OLB role. This could be the answer for a James Bettcher defense that loves blitzing the quarterback.

Defensive Line

That change would bring some change to the defensive line as well. Damon (Snacks) Harrison is one of the best run-stoppers in the NFL and Dalvin Tomlinson looks to improve off of an impressive rookie season, ranking as the top rookie interior defender in the league.

[display-posts tag=”NYG” posts_per_page=”5″]

Adding some depth to the defensive line would be a must. Resigning Jay Bromley, who has been serviceable for the Giants over the past few years, would be a cheaper option to add depth. Bringing in one of the many quality defensive line free agent options is likely as well.

Secondary

The change in scheme may not effect the Giants secondary as much as the rest of the defense. But with Dominic Rodgers-Cromartie’s recent release, Eli Apple’s 2017 tailspin, and Janoris Jenkins coming off ankle surgery, there are more than just a few questions with the secondary.

Bringing in more depth is a must to help support Landon Collins and co. in the secondary. Ross Cockrell played well down the stretch of the season and should provide some optimism for this group (three interceptions).

After Norwell Signing Fell Through, NFL Draft Pick Becoming Clear

With the New York Giants losing out on All-Pro guard Andrew Norwell, plan B must be initiated. Unfortunately, it requires the Giants and general manger Dave Gettleman to address the offensive line through the NFL Draft.

With the No. 2 overall pick, taking either a quarterback or running back Saquon Barkley is atop the list, but now Notre Dame guard Quenton Nelson must also be considered at the position.

For any team, taking a guard at No. 2 is plain foolish, so trading back for the Giants would be the most efficient move. In this instance, they can grab their guard for a great price, and they can acquire other picks/players to move forward with.

Just to give you an idea of how great Nelson is, here’s a few clips:

[display-posts tag=”NYG” posts_per_page=”3″ image_size=”thumbnail”]

If the Giants take a flier on the top-rated guard, they would immediately see an improvement on the line. Additionally, we can assume they will also be addressing the line through free agency, where players like Nate Solder, Justin Pugh, Josh Sitton and D.J. Fluker, are all waiting in the looms.

Nelson Draft Profile:

[display-posts tag=”NYG” posts_per_page=”5″]

Nelson is built like a pickup-truck; broad chest and extremely powerful limbs. His power is his greatest attribute. It helps him come out of blocks and move into the second-tier in the run-game. His agility and quickness is impressive as a guard. He’s an intriguing prospect entering the NFL this year. Additionally, he put up 35 reps on the bench press, earning second behind only Will Hernandez.
