New York Yankees: Kendrys Morales To The IL

The New York Yankees have traded for Kendrys Morales.

The New York Yankees announced that Kendrys Morales was placed on the IL with a calf strain. Additionally, Mike Tauchman and Nestor Cortes Jr. were called up to fill empty roster spots.

Morales

We aren’t really sure why Morales is on the IL, but we can guess that he injured it sometime during game one of the doubleheader with the Mets.

Morales has been awful for the Yankees. He has the lowest average on the team at .194, and has played terrible defense. All of that adds up to a -0.8 WAR.

Let’s Tauch About It! (Look, Another Crummy Mike Tauchman Joke)

Mike Tauchman is back in the bigs after some time in AAA, and is reappearing in his hometown of Chicago. Tauchman has a .211 average in 95 major league at-bats, and is batting .296 with AAA Scranton.

The Yankees also recalled Nestor Cortes Jr, but he’s been a frequent rider on the Scranton Shuttle of late.

While Morales is down, the Yankees will be rolling with an extra outfielder. Doing so gives more playing time to their all-star infield, while hopefully taking Clint Frazier out of the field more to work on his defense.

Now is probably a good place to state that Gary Sanchez, Luke Voit, Gleyber Torres, DJ LeMahieu, and Gio Urshela will all be all-stars if they continue to get votes at the rate they are now. If voting ended today, Sanchez and Voit would be starters, too. (Vote here)

But, the injury of Kendrys Morales has no negative impact for the Yankees. If anything, it just helps the Yankees, getting him and his sub .200 average out of the lineup.

New York Yankees: Judge And Stanton Ready To Return In A Few Days

New York Yankees, Aaron Judge

The New York Yankees announced earlier this week that outfielders Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton will be beginning rehab in hopes to return to the lineup next week.

Stanton began his rehab on Tuesday with the Tampa Tarpons, and went 2-for-4 with an oppo blast. He also had two home runs in his rehab game on Wednesday. If all goes well, he should meet AAA Scranton in Durham with Aaron Judge before returning to the Yankees.

Judge has only been working out in Florida, and he isn’t planning on playing any A-ball games.

Judge was batting .288 before his injury in 20 games, while Stanton played just three games before he hit the IL. Once those two come back, you can almost say that the Yankees are relatively healthy.

Who goes?

In all likeliness, Clint Frazier goes to AAA with a focus on defense. That puts the final spot between Kendrys Morales and Cameron Maybin.

I think that they should get rid of Morales, and roll with a five man infield.

Keeping Maybin gives the team an extra speedy outfielder that can produce. In 95 at-bats, he has a .274 average with five stolen bases and has given the team solid defense.

With the Yankees stars returning, it forces the team to make tough decisions, but it will just make the team better in the present and the long-run.

A Comeback Only Capable By The 2019 New York Yankees

Entering the top of the sixth inning against the Baltimore Orioles on Monday, things were looking bleak for the New York Yankees. JA Happ struggled again, giving up six runs in less than four complete innings.

Trailing 6-1, a new life emerged in the Yankees. By the ninth inning, the Yankees had taken a 10-7 lead.

How it happened

Starting with first and second with nobody out in the sixth, Gary Sanchez picked up an RBI single and Kendrys Morales scored a run on a grounder to short.

Luis Cessa would give up a run in the bottom of the inning, but the Yankees came back with two more in the seventh. DJ LeMahieu had an RBI single and Hicks brought in a run on a flyball.

The Yankees only scored one in the eighth, but it was a big one, putting them within one. Gleyber Torres hit his second solo-shot of the game, the other coming in the second.

Trailing 7-6 entering the ninth, the Yankees needed a final push, and they scored four to take a three run lead. They took advantage of a few defensive miscues, including a misread pop-up to Baltimore catcher Pedro Severino that landed in foul territory.

After Aaron Hicks hit a sacrifice fly to tie the game, Luke Voit was walked before Gary Sanchez teed off on an inside fastball for a three-run homerun.

Only 2019

What a comeback! This is something only capable of the 2019 New York Yankees. With the amount of injuries sustained, they Yankees are using it as motivation to keep winning.

It’s also a great way to start off the road trip. Starting out a road trip with a win builds momentum, especially in a tight division. The Red Sox won on Monday, and the Rays were off.

With three games left against the Orioles, the Yankees have a one game division lead that they will try to increase. The more breathing room the better.

Go Yankees!

What Kendrys Morales Brings to the New York Yankees

The New York Yankees have traded for Kendrys Morales.

After Tuesday’s game against the Baltimore Orioles was postponed, the New York Yankees announced that they traded for Kendrys Morales from the Athletics. In exchange, the Yankees will send a player to be named later or cash.

What we’re working with

Morales, 35, is a switch-hitting first baseman and DH, but primarily a DH. After a .203 start to the season over 109 at-bats, the Athletics had DFA’d him on Monday.

Morales is generally a power hitter that can accumulate a lot of home runs and doubles. Power hitters’ averages usually rise once they become a Yankee because of the short porches down the lines at Yankee Stadium.

What the New York Yankees expect out of him

The Yankees are hoping that they can plug Morales into the six or seven spot in the order to drive in runs. They don’t need him to hit for a great average, just get run production via extra base hits and home runs.

With Andujar now on the IL again, that secures Giovanny Urshela’s spot at third for the meantime. Because of that, it will leave some time at the DH spot open for Morales. Hopefully, he shouldn’t be needed in the field at all. Luke Voit is in a little rut right now, but should soon recover from it. Plus, Morales isn’t really known to be a gold-glover.

Hopefully, the acquisition of Kendrys Morales should help boost the lineup and cover up some of the injuries.
