New York Yankees: How Did Players Fare In The All-Star Game

New York Yankees, Aroldis Chapman

Tuesday evening was the MLB All-Star game, and all five New York Yankees players selected to the team played and had an impact. Keep reading to find out what each player did in the game.

DJ LeMahieu

DJ went 0-for-2 in the game, but played clean defense in his four and a half innings of play. He grounded out to the pitcher in both at-bats.

Gary Sanchez

Gary Sanchez went 1-for-2 and caught a solid half game. He ripped a double to left in the fifth inning and flied out earlier in the game.

Gleyber Torres

Gleyber Torres pinch-hit for DJ LeMahieu in the fifth, and went 1-for-2 in doing so. He struck out his first time up, but reached on an infield single his second time up to the plate.

Masahiro Tanaka

Masahiro Tanaka pitched the second inning, allowing one hit but struck out one to kept the game scoreless. Gary Sanchez caught him as usual. Tanaka actually ended up as the winning pitcher, as the AL won 4-3.

Aroldis Chapman

Aroldis Chapman came in the ninth to get the save, and did so by striking out the side. It was actually a much needed inning of work, as this past week was a bit shaky for him on the mound.

It’s great that the Yankees players performed well at the all-star game, but now it’s time for the second half stretch run.

New York Yankees: Top 3 surprise players up to the All-Star break

New York Yankees, DJ LeMahieu

The New York Yankees have been plagued by the injury bug this year that has affected nearly every unit on the team. The starting pitching has been hit very hard as well as the bullpen, but luckily the run support has been fantastic for the Bombers as they have the second-best record in baseball.

Up to this point just before the All-Star break, the Yanks have been saved by various players that have emerged to supplement the deficiencies on the team.

Here are the New York Yankees top 3 surprises:

1.) Gio Urshela

As a career .227 hitter before coming to New York, Urshela is having easily his best season this year with a .309 batting average. Seven homers and 39 RBIs has helped the Yankees crawl out of tight windows and win close games when the pitching has lacked ineffectiveness.

In addition, his defensive abilities at the hot corner have been stellar. He’s been a major upgrade defensively over Miguel Andujar and his offensive production has been just as good if not better. The emergence of Urshela couldn’t have been better timed, as he’s been a true impact player for the Bombers this season and will be needed during an expected playoff run.

2.) DJ LeMahieu

While the former Colorado Rockies infielder was already a quality player before putting on the Pinstripes, his influence for the Yankees has been more than impactful. Hitting .336 on the year with 12 homers and 63 RBIs has easily earned him an All-Star selection and reason to believe he could be in the lead for the MVP award.

A two-year, $26 million deal is looking like a steal at this point and I would even expect GM Brian Cashman to extend the contract after this season. His ability to move around the infield and play at every position is extremely beneficial and valuable for a team that struggled with injuries in the infield.

Hitting .461 with runners in scoring position is the best in the MLB for players with a minimum of 15 RISP at-bats, and he’s had an impressive 75.

He once again came up clutch against the Tampa Bay Rays a few nights ago, hitting a game-sealing single that drove in two runs and captured the league. He was 0-for-4 before earning his first hit of the night. The clutchness he’s brought to the Yankees has been unbelievable.

“I feel like it’s my turn to make a mark on the game,” he said. “It’s a good opportunity to put runs on the board. I keep saying the approach doesn’t change, but I think there’s a certain level of focus there in situations like that.”

3.) Cameron Maybin

While Maybin is currently on the 10-day injured list with a grade 2 left calf strain, his influence this year has been impressive. Another average player that has flourished in Pinstripes. As a .250 career hitter, Maybin is batting .314 with the Yankees and was previously on a home run streak before his injury.

His authority in the absence of Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton was exactly what the Yankees needed. The injury bug gave the opportunity to multiple players to show their value and make a difference for a team with World Series hopes and potential — the former Mariner and Marlin has taken advantage of that reality.

Cameron’s defense has been equally impressive to his offense, allowing zero errors over 41 total games this season. To put that into perspective, Clint Frazier had three errors in 29 total games. That’s a big reason Frazier was sent back down to the minor leagues and Maybin was retained on the active roster.

His return will give the Yanks a solid cushion while Stanton works his way back from his latest ailment.

New York Yankees: Has Miguel Andujar become a trading piece?

New York Yankees, Miguel Andujar

The current New York Yankees team has proved to be one of the most resilient and exciting in baseball, especially with the emergence of Gio Urshela at third base and DJ LeMahieu as a rotational infielder.

One question that crosses my mind — is Miguel Andujar expendable now after they’ve found answers in the infield? There are two sides to the argument.

Does Yankees’ Miguel Andujar’s defense make him a liability?

The Yankees’ youthful third baseman had a fantastic rookie campaign at the plate, hitting .297 with 27 homers and 92 RBIs. His fantastic offensive production immediately made him the expected starter for the future at the hot corner for the Bombers, however, his defensive issues have presented a dilemma.

Are the Yanks better off trading Andujar for a starting pitcher? Or should they hang tight and see where his future takes them?

He tallied three errors in four games earlier this year before being transferred to the 60-day injured list with season-ending shoulder surgery. The fact is, his value is at an all-time low, but he’s in a similar situation to Clint Frazier. Both are offensively solid but struggle on the defensive side. The difference being, Frazier has more of an attitude and privileged mentality compared to Andujar who seems to be a true Yankee.

I see the Yankees sticking with their young gun for the future, considering Urshela is a one-year wonder at this point — as a career .227 hitter currently batting .303 on the season, probability-wise, he’s not going to enjoy this success in future years. Keeping him around, though, isn’t a bad idea.

Andujar will need some time to recover and catch up to his former self. At this point, it seems destined that he will remain a Yankees for the foreseeable future based on his potential and likeness in the club-house. LeMahieu, who’s been solid at third base when Urshela is off, is a far better second-baseman – his natural position. There’s no need to test the waters with inexperience when continuing to develop Andujar is an option on the table.

New York Yankees: DJ LeMahieu Continues To Lead The Team

New York Yankees, DJ LeMahieu

Over the off-season, New York Yankee fans wanted Manny Machado, and they moaned and groaned when the team signed DJ LeMahieu to a two year deal instead. While Machado is batting a solid .278, LeMahieu is hitting .331 and is hitting over .360 in June alone.

11 games

With a 2-for-4 effort on Tuesday against the Blue Jays, LeMahieu extended his hitting streak to 11 games. Not just that, but he has been hitting over .500 with runners in scoring position this season.

His OBP is pushing .400, and LeMahieu will be an all-star with a shot at starting the game at second base.

The lowest that his average was this season was on April 22 after a game against the Angels. His average was under .300 for just four games this year, and he has been in the low to mid .300s since.

Power surge

Through just half of a season, LeMahieu has 11 home runs, already good for a tie for second in his career. His career high was 15 long balls just last year, and is on pace for 20 this year.

Also, his power has been impressive lately. He hit just one home run before May 11th.

On Tuesday, LeMahieu hit a historic home run, creating a major league record 28 games in a row with a home run.

LeMahieu has been great for the Yankees this year, and will continue to lead the team on offense.

New York Yankees: Was Optioning Thairo Estrada The Right Move?

New York Yankees, Thairo Estrada

With Didi Gregorius becoming activated, the New York Yankees were forced to make a roster move to make room for him. What they did was send Thairo Estrada to AAA, rather than DFA’ing or releasing Kendrys Morales

Should of kept Estrada

In my mind, the Yankees should of 100% kept Thairo Estrada and gotten rid of Kendrys Morales.

Estrada has outperformed Morales in every aspect. The only thing that Morales has and Estrada doesn’t is switch hitting.

Estrada’s average is at .280 through 50 at-bats, and he has 11 RBIs and three home runs. Morales has a .189 average through 159 at-bats with 11 RBIs, and two home runs.

Estrada also has a lot more speed and versatility compared to Morales. Estrada can play the middle infield, as well as the outfield and has a lot of speed. Morales, is not a great fielder and is extremely slow.

Kendrys Morales is a first baseman, and keeping him makes three guys who can play first. Luke Voit is obviously the starter, and DJ LeMahieu backs up every infield position. When you have those two guys, there is no need for a third first baseman, especially a guy batting under .200.

LeMahieu will now just play in a new position every day. He will give guys off-days or let them DH, or DH himself if nothing else.

Because Estrada is so versatile and has better season stats, the Yankees should of kept him over Morales. Morales is slow and aging, and they could release him or trade him to a rebuilding team like the Orioles or the Marlins.

New York Yankees: DJ LeMahieu Continues To Be A Force

New York Yankees, DJ LeMahieu

Minus a slight cold spell in the end of April, DJ LeMahieu has been absolutely terrific for the New York Yankees. People believed that LeMahieu would struggle being outside of Coors Field, his old home stadium. But, he has clearly proved the haters wrong and has a solid chance to be an all-star.

Well rounded

Over 195 at-bats, LeMahieu has 61 hits, good for a .313 average. He has five home runs and 30 RBIs. On Wednesday against the Padres, he opened up the game with a solo home run, then Luke Voit followed suit batting second.

For most of the season, LeMahieu has been the leadoff hitter, dropping Brett Gardner in the order. 30 RBI at the end of May for a leadoff hitter is fantastic, and that puts him on pace for 90 RBI. The beginning of Friday’s series against the Red Sox begins the middle third of the season.

On defense, LeMahieu has been very good, too. Over three positions, he has just three errors, and two of them were early on. He helps anchor an already great defensive infield.

LeMahieu is also pretty quick, and has two stolen bases this year. On the defensive end, that along with his reaction time makes him a wall in the field.

Overall, DJ LeMahieu’s contributions have greatly benefited the team. His 1.9 WAR is already nearing his 3.0 WAR from last season, and he likely will pass his career high WAR if he continues to play the way he is. His career high WAR was 5.2 in 2016 with the Rockies.

A Comeback Only Capable By The 2019 New York Yankees

Entering the top of the sixth inning against the Baltimore Orioles on Monday, things were looking bleak for the New York Yankees. JA Happ struggled again, giving up six runs in less than four complete innings.

Trailing 6-1, a new life emerged in the Yankees. By the ninth inning, the Yankees had taken a 10-7 lead.

How it happened

Starting with first and second with nobody out in the sixth, Gary Sanchez picked up an RBI single and Kendrys Morales scored a run on a grounder to short.

Luis Cessa would give up a run in the bottom of the inning, but the Yankees came back with two more in the seventh. DJ LeMahieu had an RBI single and Hicks brought in a run on a flyball.

The Yankees only scored one in the eighth, but it was a big one, putting them within one. Gleyber Torres hit his second solo-shot of the game, the other coming in the second.

Trailing 7-6 entering the ninth, the Yankees needed a final push, and they scored four to take a three run lead. They took advantage of a few defensive miscues, including a misread pop-up to Baltimore catcher Pedro Severino that landed in foul territory.

After Aaron Hicks hit a sacrifice fly to tie the game, Luke Voit was walked before Gary Sanchez teed off on an inside fastball for a three-run homerun.

Only 2019

What a comeback! This is something only capable of the 2019 New York Yankees. With the amount of injuries sustained, they Yankees are using it as motivation to keep winning.

It’s also a great way to start off the road trip. Starting out a road trip with a win builds momentum, especially in a tight division. The Red Sox won on Monday, and the Rays were off.

With three games left against the Orioles, the Yankees have a one game division lead that they will try to increase. The more breathing room the better.

Go Yankees!

With Players Beginning to Return, the New York Yankees Face Tough Decisions

New York Yankees, Aaron Hicks

The New York Yankees faced and are still facing an injury crisis, but soon a lot of their stars will be back. However, it will likely be three outfielders to return next. How will the Yankees work this out? Also, once Didi Gregorius comes back, which infielder will go?

The decisions:

Clint Frazier will be returning from a brief IL stint on Monday, and the Yankees sent Stephen Tarpley down for the corresponding move. But, Tarpley isn’t an outfielder, he’s a pitcher.

Tyler Wade has currently been playing the outfield, but I believe that he will begin to play the infield again. People thought for sure though that Mike Tauchman would go once Frazier returns, but Aaron Boone has confirmed that his time as a Yankee has not expired just yet.

Once Aaron Hicks returns in ~10 days, it will certainly be Tauchman’s time to go. A .176 average ain’t gonna cut it in the MLB, especially with Cameron Maybin hitting .333 while playing good defense. Maybin will 100% stay over Tauchman. Maybin is a proven outfielder with a lot of MLB experience.

But once Giancarlo Stanton returns, sometime shortly after Hicks, it will likely be Maybin’s time to go. They may be able to trade Maybin and get some cash or a prospect, because he deserves a spot on a MLB team, but won’t have one with a healthy Yankee squad.

Didi will begin his rehab assignment in a few weeks, and once he returns it will either be Tyler Wade’s or Gio Urshela’s time to go. Didi should be on the active roster in about a month or so.

I think that it should be Wade that goes because, well, Urshela has outplayed him in almost every aspect. Wade is a great base-runner and is very aggressive, but Urshela is more defensively sound and boasts a .338 batting average.

Wade just hasn’t proven himself enough to maintain a spot on a healthy roster, and needs to hit better to spend more time in the MLB. He is also beginning to run low on minor league options, so that could potentially be a problem in the near future.

And once you remove Wade, Gleyber can shift back to second and DJ can be the utility man the Yankees wanted.

Once more players become healthy, the Yankees will face several tough roster decisions. But, Brian Cashman doesn’t make very many bad decisions and you should trust that he will continue to make the right ones.

New York Yankees Play Poorly In Andujar’s Return, Lose 7-3 To Twins

New York Yankees, Miguel Andujar

The New York Yankees had an overall poor game-the pitching staff struggled as well as having a limited offense, losing 7-3 to the Twins.

Nobody had it

No Yankee pitcher really seemed to have anything going on Saturday. With the extended use of the bullpen on Friday, Aaron Boone was forced to use the younger, low-leverage guys and it didn’t pan out after JA Happ struggled.

Happ gave up seven hits and four runs over 5 and 2/3 innings of work. He got three strikeouts, walking one and giving up two home runs. Both home runs came off of relatively high fastballs.

Happ got seven ground-balls and six fly-balls, getting eight swings and misses. He threw 81 pitches and 51 strikes.

After Happ, Joe Harvey, Steven Tarpley, and Jake Barrett each pitched, giving up one run each.

It was just one of those days where nobody had it.

Welcome back, Miggy

Miguel Andujar returned from the IL on Saturday, and picked up a hit while batting fourth. That was the only positive; in the field he had two errors-one fielding and one throwing.

But, it was DJ LeMahieu who led the Yankees with two hits, missing the last three games with a knee contusion.

Gary Sanchez hit his 11th home run of the season, now tied for first in the AL. That is extremely impressive since he was hurt for two weeks, and catchers generally rest once every five or six days.

The other Yankee to score was Brett Gardner on a wild pitch, and it seems that that is how a lot of the Yankee runs have been scoring of late.

Torres, Gardner, and Maybin each had base-hits. Defensively, Cameron Maybin robbed Jonathan Schoop of a three-run home run in the fourth. It’s easily the play of the year thus far for the Yankees.

Luke Voit didn’t get on base for the first time all year, ending his streak at 42 games. A very impressive streak for an up-and-coming player.

With weather in the area, Sunday’s rubber-match has been pushed back to a 4:05PM start, still on MLB Network, YES, and Fox Sports Go. Domingo German gets the ball for the Yankees against former Yankee Michael Pineda of the Twins. After everything Pineda went through, it will be nice to see him on a mound again in New York, and he should receive a nice hand.
