New York Giants: Why Eli Manning is primed for an above-average 2019 season

New York Giants, Eli Manning

While training camp is never the ideal place to make an assumption, the New York Giants might be in better shape than previously thought. Yes, the wide receiver corps is dwindling to Cody Latimer and co., and the secondary is flush with youth and inexperience, but veteran quarterback Eli Manning looks as sharp as ever.

A majority of Tuesday’s practice focused on the bread and butter of head coach Pat Shurmur’s offense. A ton of screen passes and short throws from Manning. Play-action will be fit into the program as well, but utilizing the separation abilities of receivers like Sterling Shepard and Golden Tate will be the primary focus.

Besides, running back Saquon Barkley will be the focal point with the departure of Odell Beckham Jr. this offseason. However, Manning won’t be held to dump-offs and shallow crossing routes, which Evan Engram proved with a one-handed snag over the middle that resulted in a touchdown.

Manning, though, has looked very sharp this offseason after admitting he changed his workout program to fit the competition of Daniel Jones. The more experienced quarterback owned the red-zone drills, and it seems as if Manning’s competitiveness has once again re-entered the picture.

Eli Manning:

Overall stats: 12-of-15 passing with two touchdowns

11-on-11 red zone stats: 3-for-4 passing with two touchdowns

What will help the New York Giants offense the most?

While Manning has looked good, the offensive line will be the catalyst behind his success. Adding Kevin Zeitler at right guard and Mike Remmers at right tackle should provide more time in the pocket. Eli has been plagued with inadequate protection in recent years and has developed a few bad habits — happy feet, lack of awareness, too cautious.

More time will enable better reads on his progressions which will not only open up the field for the offense, but it will unveil the next level of Shurmur’s playbook.

[su_posts template=”templates/teaser-loop.php” posts_per_page=”3″ tax_term=”151323″ order=”desc”]

Last season, Manning had one of his best years, thanks to Barkley and a bit of garbage time. A 66 completion percentage marked the highest in his 15-year career, and 92.4 passer rating was his best since 2015. This indicates he still has some gas left in the tank.

Barkley going into his second season and the offensive line improving should be enough to see Manning beat his 2018 numbers.

New York Giants: Predicting Which Units Will Be The Most Impactful On Offense

The New York Giants’ offense has been revamped in the 2019 offseason. The Giants rebuilt their offensive line and moved on from superstar receiver Odell Beckham Jr.

But the Giants have plenty of talent across their offense. Despite a potential quarterback controversy, there is plenty to be excited about on New York’s offense.

Big Blue should see an instant impact from every position group on offense. But which positions will be the most impactful?

1. Running Back

Saquon Barkley is the best running back in the NFL. “Saquads” proved to be an absolutely dominant force in his rookie season.

2018’s AP Offensive Rookie Of The Year displayed his ability to make plays as a runner and a receiver. Saquon broke a rookie running back record with 91 receptions in 2018. In addition, Barkley lead the NFL in scrimmage yards with 2,028.

Saquon’s production should increase in 2019 as the lone leader of the Giants’ offense. The subtraction of Odell Beckham should lead to even more big plays for Saquon Barkley.

2. Offensive Line

The Giants’ offensive line has undergone an expensive reconstruction the past two years. This should make it one of the team’s most impactful positional groups.

Newly acquired right guard Kevin Zeitler will make an instant impact as he was the NFL’s best pass-blocking guard in 2018 according to Pro Football Focus.

Additionally, year two in the Giants’ offense should lead to a big season from the Giants’ left side duo. Nate Solder and Will Hernandez had a solid but inconsistent 2018 season. Expect to see them gain some more consistency this season.

3. Wide Receiver

Despite losing their best player at this position, the Giants still have one of the better wide receiver corps in the NFL. In response to Beckham’s departure, New York brought in veteran receiver Golden Tate.

Tate is an elite playmaker after the catch. He forced 22 missed tackles in 2017 and 23 missed tackles in 2018. Additionally, over the past ten years, Golden Tate has ranked 4th in the NFL in yards after the catch per reception with an average of 7.9 yards.

Opposite of Golden Tate is Sterling Shepard. Shep has been a solid player for the Giants in his first three seasons. Sterling’s yardage totals have increased every year and that trend should continue in 2019 thanks to a more prominent role with Odell’s absence.

Sterling suffered a fractured thumb during the first practice of training camp. Fortunately, Pat Shurmur does not seem too concerned, and it looks like Shepard will be able to play week one.

Tate and Shepard will make an extra impact in the run game. Both receivers are solid, tough blockers who will help Saquon Barkley break off even more big runs on the outside.

4. Tight End

Evan Engram’s position would be higher on this list if he did not have an injury history. Evan Engram is one of the most versatile and explosive tight ends in the league. Unfortunately, injuries have held Engram back from propelling his way to the top of the league.

When Evan Engram is on the field, he is a true playmaker. Especially when Odell Beckham jr is off the field. In 2018, Evan Engram saw a significant statistical boost once Beckham went down with an injury.

Engram averaged only 36.7 yards per game prior to Beckham’s injury. After Odell went down, Evan’s average jumped all the way to 80 yards per gameA full sixteen game season without Odell should serve Evan well.

5. Quarterback

The final position on this list is one shrouded in controversy. Eli Manning is back for his sixteenth season in the NFL, despite a regression in play the last few years.

The Giants’ offense has shifted towards a run-first attack, which will take a lot of pressure and impact off of the quarterback’s shoulders. Eli Manning should show improvement this season with an upgraded offensive line, but he is at the end of the back nine and it is unclear just how much Manning still has left in the tank.

Eli posted a career-high completion percentage in 2018 with 66%. But the rest of his statistics were not highly impactful. Manning threw for a respectable 4,299 yards, but only 21 touchdown passes. The Giants will need Eli to score a higher volume of touchdowns in order to be a competitive team in 2019.

The Giants’ offense gives fans a lot to be excited about in 2019. If the team can stay healthy and play up to their full potential, the Giants’ offense could surprise a lot of people.

New York Giants: Training Camp From A Different Perspective

The New York Giants‘ first official day of training camp was yesterday, July 25th. I live in Florida, but am currently on vacation visiting family in New York, so I was able to make it to the opening day of New York Giants training camp.

I was born and raised in New York, but I have been living in Florida for almost ten years now. I always have been and always will be a die-hard New York Giants fan, so it was a really exciting opportunity for me to go to training camp.

This was my first time ever going to the New York Giants’ training camp, and it was fantastic. Rather than breaking down day one of practice today, I’ve decided that I’m going to share what this experience was like for me, a Floridian.

Feeling Giants Pride

There truly is no fan base in the world like Giants Nation. I live about an hour from the Miami Dolphins’ training camp, so I went to one practice last summer. Let me tell you, the fan representation was nothing compared to that of New York’s.

The line to get into the New York Giants’ training camp went out through the entire parking lot. It moved quickly, but I was still in line for about half an hour. Believe it or not, I showed up an hour early and the line was already that long.

Once I got inside the practice, I made my way to an already packed seating area and sat down to watch the Gmen get to work. Throughout the practice, Giants fans were loud and energetic and so excited to see their team back in action.

Giants fans received some unwarranted criticism last week from Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield. Mayfield subliminally said that Giants fans don’t show up to games, don’t care about the team, and don’t pack the stadium. This couldn’t be further from the truth.  This was not a game, it was training camp, and it was absolutely packed with fans happy to be there and full of care.

When Daniel Jones made a completion, you heard fans cheer like it was a touchdown pass on Sundays. When Lorenzo Carter made an incredible interception on a screen pass, Giants fans broke out into chants. As Saquon Barkley warmed up on the sideline, all you could hear was M-V-P chants for the best running back in the NFL.

Giants fans care. They care a lot. If you think any different, you are wrong. The Giants may not be one of the best teams in the league right now, but Giants Nation always has been and always will be absolutely filled with Giants Pride.

It Can Be Difficult To Interact With The Players

The players truly care about and appreciate all of the fans. The players are happy to wave at the fans and sign autographs. Unfortunately, the Quest Diagnostics Training Center does not make it too easy to do this.

This is the one area I would have to say that Miami does better than New York. Miami’s training camp allows you to get right up to the action with only one fence in the way. It gives fans the opportunity to chat with players and take selfies before and after practice. I was under the impression that New York would have a similar setup, but they, unfortunately, did not.

New York has the same type of single fence/gate around the practice field. But on top of that, they have a second set of fencing making it impossible for fans to get close enough to the players for a selfie. If you want to meet the players, you have to bring along a kid and head to the autograph zone.

They have an autograph zone in Miami, too, but not every player chose to go there or inside. Many of the players walked around the fencing and conversed with the fans. I wish that the Giants had the same opportunity, but the way that Quest Diagnostics is set up takes that opportunity away from the fans.

The Players Are Very Friendly

When you can finally manage to get near the players, they are so friendly. They are more than willing to sign autographs for every fan in the section. I managed to get into the autograph zone and meet multiple players who were all so appreciative of the fans.

Eli Manning must’ve signed 500 autographs today. He is a true class act. This is his 16th season in the league and he still takes the time to make sure every young fan has gotten his signature. Gotta love Eli.

His future successor, Daniel Jones, has continued to basically be a second-coming of Eli Manning. Daniel went through and signed autographs for every fan in the autograph section. He also took some time to chit chat with select fans and take pictures with whoever asked.

I was able to get a picture with Daniel Jones who was super kind and more than willing:

Overall, I had a great time at Giants’ training camp. It was a real treat for me, being that I live in Florida and only get to see the Giants every so often when they play in Tampa or Miami (luckily, they will be in Tampa this year, so I actually will get to see them again). It was great being surrounded by Giants fans and collectively watching our team sharpen iron with iron.

The team had a solid day of practice on both sides of the ball. I’m so happy that football is back and I can’t wait to watch Big Blue in action this season! Go, Giants!

New York Giants: Sterling Shepard fractures thumb, considered “week to week”

New York Giants, Sterling Shepard

It’s finally that time of year again! Today the first New York Giants training camp practice of the 2019 season took place and it was eventful, to say the least. We had an “MVP” chant for Saquon Barkley, a “We want Daniel” chant as Eli Manning lined up for team drills and all sorts of splash plays in practice.

Players who stood out:

Sterling Shepard was getting open in all areas of the field, most notably he was open deep down the field and in the intermediate range. That’s very important as he will be needed more than ever before in those areas of the field.

Eli Manning had a sharp practice, he had good timing with his receivers and was very efficient outside of a few questionable decisions. Manning and Shepard’s chemistry sticks out quite a bit.

Deandre Baker didn’t look like a rookie as he stayed right with his opposition for most of the afternoon. Some worried about his speed after the combine but it didn’t look like an issue on the field.

Alonzo Russell climbed the ladder for a couple of impressive receptions including one deep down the sideline from Daniel Jones.

Corey Ballentine got his hands on a few passes and had to leave his feet for his 3rd deflection, he looks very quick and rangy in coverage.

Lorenzo Carter looks like he’s timing his get-off better. He also had the awareness to blow up an end-around to Golden Tate. To top off his practice he intercepted Eli Manning while covering Saquon Barkley and then dove into the endzone. Lorenzo may have been the most impressive player on the field today.

Antonio Hamilton got his hands on a few passes and punched the ball out of Rod Smith’s hands, causing a turnover on the play.

[su_posts template=”templates/teaser-loop.php” posts_per_page=”3″ tax_term=”151323″ order=”desc”]

Camp Battles:

Chad Wheeler was helping out on the left side today to keep Nate Solder fresh during his recovery but will compete with Mike Remmers on the right side when Solder is fully recovered.

Tae Davis didn’t open camp as a starter but he was given his chances with the 1st team, rotating with BJ Goodson.

Kareem Martin and Markus Golden rotated with the 1st team, Martin opened camp as the starter.

Cody Latimer started as the 3rd wide receiver but there will be a very heated competition for the 3rd receiver spot throughout training camp.

Grant Haley had the 1st crack at the nickel corner job but Julian Love will push him throughout the summer.

Bumps and Bruises:

The most notable injury was Sterling Shepard’s, he had an X-ray done on his hand which revealed a fracture. The good news is he isn’t expected to miss any regular-season games. Jabrill Peppers looked a little sore but just had some cramping. He shouldn’t miss any practice time due to cramps.

Final Thoughts:

While the team is in shirts and shorts we aren’t getting a great look at the offensive line or the front seven on defense. What we can get a better glimpse of is what the passing offense and passing defense will look like. Both units held their own for the most part but the only real victory of today is Sterling Shepard avoiding a long-term injury although a fractured thumb could potentially keep him out until late August.

New York Giants: Eli Manning is speaking like the end is near

New York Giants, Eli Manning

Is New York Giants QB Eli Manning preparing for the end?

There’s no question that New York Giants veteran quarterback Eli Manning’s days are numbered, in fact, they’re dwindling down to the final seconds.

After 15 years of virtually no competition, the two-time Super Bowl-winning passer is now feeling the heat, as rookie Daniel Jones has shown impressive development and understanding for the game at this point in the offseason. While he’s yet to step on an NFL field and perform at a quality level, he’s only several weeks away from doing so.

Manning knows he’s going to have to perform at a higher level than year’s past to stay put in the starting position, but at this point, he has little to worry about. It would take a catastrophic bust of a year for Jones to take over as the starting quarterback.

However, the way Manning has been speaking has been indicative of what’s naturally to come…his succession.

Statements like, “it’s all about this year,” and “When you’re younger you’re working hard on the mental aspect of things… scheme, coverage, picking up blitzes, etc… Now, it’s the maintenance, stretching, keeping the body fresh. The hard work never changes, it just changes which area in which you’re working hard,” both attest to his decline.

There’s nothing to worry about at this point for Manning in the offseason, as 15 years of NFL experience will trump a few solid passes in training camp every day of the week. But you can clearly tell he’s preparing for the reality of being released after his contract expires at the end of 2019.

[su_posts template=”templates/teaser-loop.php” posts_per_page=”3″ tax_term=”151323″ order=”desc”]

The goal is to make the playoffs in the meantime and go out with a bang, the right way. The team is coming together nicely with a solid grouping of youth on both sides of the ball, and sophomore running back Saquon Barkley will be there to mask Eli’s deficiencies once more. For the first time in a decade and a half, Eli will feel the pressures of being replaced, and hopefully, it can bring out the best in the Giant’s trusty stead.

New York Giants: Saquon Barkley Already Deserves A Captain’s Patch

Training camp is officially starting this week for the New York Giants. 2019 will bring along numerous important positional battles in training camp and showcase key rookies, such as first-round quarterback Daniel Jones.

Along with training camp also comes an important moment for the players outside of their on-field performance. Training camp allows players to establish themselves as true leaders an earn themselves a captain’s patch.

Teams are allowed to select six total team captains. The Giants typically select two on offense, two on defense, and two on special teams. Usually these patches are given to longstanding veterans, but occasionally, young players can prove themselves worthy and earn their patch very on in their careers.

Saquon Barkley is a young player who has already proven himself worthy and deserves a captain’s patch.

Saquon Leads By Example

Saquon Barkley began leading by example as early as last year’s rookie minicamp. In his first post-practice interview, Barkley discussed his leadership. His quotes were very telling of the high-character player and person that he is.

“You have to start off by leading by example,” Barkley said. “When you have to be vocal … whether it is a break down or you are learning something a lot faster than someone else and you try and help them in that area or someone is learning faster than you and you ask them. Those are the ways I will try and grow and to lead.” – Saquon Barkley via NY Daily News

All the things that Saquon discussed and mentioned during 2018’s rookie mincamp were on display during the 2018 NFL season. One specific moment during the Giants’ blowout win versus Washington stands out.

Saquon Barkley could sense that the Giants were close to pulling off a big play. All he had to do was get his teammates on the same page. So between possessions, Barkley went over to his offensive line, coached them up on the sideline, then delivered with a 78-yard touchdown run.

This moment clearly refelcts how well Saquon leads by example and how mature he was as just a rookie. Saquon Barkley lead his team on multiple occasions during his rookie season. But Saquon has not just been a leader on the field. He has been a tremendous leader and teammate off the field, too.

Saquon Is A Leader In The Media

Saquon Barkley is as mature as can be for a second-year superstar in the NFL. Barkley has shown public support for his teammates under scruutiny under multiple occasions already. Saquon has come to the defense of both of his quarterbacks this offseason.

Daniel Jones was a highly controversial pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. Jones has plenty of doubters and haters, but Barkley is not one of them. The superstar running back made it clear that he fully supports and believes in the Giants’ heir apparent.

When Saquon was asked about Daniel Jones, he reminded reporters how great of a situation Daniel Jones gets to come into. Barkley stated: “You get to come to New York. You get to learn behind Eli Manning, a two-time Super Bowl MVP, a quarterback who does everything right, and is a leader and captain. When his opportunity comes, he just has to be ready for it.”

In this one quote, Saquon shows support and admiration for his team’s current signal-caller, too. Eli Manning is heading into his sixteenth season and has received a large portion of the team’s criticisms over the past couple of years.

But Saquon Barkley has been extremely supportive of him all offseason. Saquon explained that it “bothers him” to see and hear all of the criticism that Manning gets because “it’s not his fault,” Barkley says “He’s not the reason why [we’ve struggled]. We love to put the blame on one person, but it takes 11 men, a team and an organization all together to win.”

Saquon Barkley’s advanced leadership on and off the field demonstrate an impeccable amount of maturity for a superstar player at his age. Whether it is leading by example on the field, helping out his teammates on the sideline, or displaying undying support for his teammates in the media, Saquon Barkley does it all. Barkley’s leadership makes him deserving of a captian’s patch as early as his sophomore season in 2019.

New York Giants: Saquon Barkley once again shows his class

New York Giants, Saquon Barkley

The New York Giants couldn’t have struck any more gold if they tried with running back sensation Saquon Barkley. The 2018 second overall pick was as close to a sure-thing as you can get in the NFL Draft, and the Giants didn’t hesitate to select him.

With several franchise-caliber quarterbacks on the board, new general manager Dave Gettleman knew Barkley was the selection no matter what passer was on the board. Gettleman went as far as to say he was the best physical specimen he’s seen in the last 30 years.

Up to this point, his judgment has proved to be right, as Barkley collected over 2,000 All-Purpose yards in his rookie campaign joining an elite group of running backs to reach that feat in their first season.

Statistics don’t mean anything to Saqoun, he has other priorities in mind for the New York Giants:

“I think I can be a lot better. And not just by stats — I think that’s where a lot of people get confused. For me, it’s not about stats,” Barkley told ESPN on Friday. “I break it down like this — why have 3,000 yards and go 5-11? What does that really mean? What did you really do for your team?

Finishing last season with a 5-11 record didn’t sit right with Barkley, who hasn’t experienced losing at that rate in quite some time. The NFL is a different beast, you need the whole team to operate at a high level to win, and while Barkley produced as much as he possibly could, the rest of the team didn’t.

“I would love to have the most yards in the league and beat [Ezekiel Elliott] and beat [Todd Gurley] and all that. That’s how I am, that’s how I operate. But at the end of the day, I end up with the most all-purpose yards and we didn’t make the playoffs.”

“I’d rather have 1,200 yards or 1,400 yards and less touchdowns, and [Sterling Shepard] goes for 1,000, [Evan Engram] goes for 1,000 and Golden Tate goes for 1,000 and we’re 13-3 or 11-5 at the end of the year and competing for a championship.”

Have you ever seen a more humble player in your life? He’s the epitome of a leader and a team player. That’s the attitude Gettleman wanted on the Giants and for the new face of the franchise. Drafting Daniel Jones caught headlines and attention, but the real hero here will always be Saquon Barkley.

New York Giants News, 7/19 – Who will benefit the most from OBJ departure?

New York Giants, Evan Engram

Good Morning, New York Giants Fans!

The moment general manager Dave Gettleman traded Odell Beckham Jr. to the Cleveland Browns, one specific name popped up into my head — Evan Engram.

You might be wondering, why on earth were you not in a rage like the rest of us, Alex? I was, but I also realized how many other players were going to see an uptick in targets and production in 2019.

Not only Engram but Sterling Shepard too. The Giants’ tight end saw his total yardage per game doubly from about 40 to 80 when Beckham was off the field last season for the final few games of the regular season. In fact, it’s quite eye-opening how much Eli Manning relied on Beckham to carry the offense.

Manning would oftentimes stop at his first progression without even considering standing in the pocket because of OBJ’s influence. How many times did we see Eli heave throws into triple coverage praying Odell would come down with it while two players were wide open in the flat.

I remember one specific moment against the Carolina Panthers where Eli threw a ball deep downfield into triple coverage while Saquon Barkley was standing in the flat with nobody within 20-yards of him. I’m sure you remember this too. However, I’m not here to talk about OBJ, but rather the players that will benefit from his departure.

If Engram can remain healthy in 2019, he could have a stellar season with increased targets. Shepard as well, considering he’s now the No. 1 option on the team if you put Tate in the No. 2 spot.

New York Giants News, 7/18 – Baker Mayfield has no idea

New York Giants: 2 scenarios where Daniel Jones starts in 2019

New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning and Daniel Jones.

The New York Giants head into the 2019 season with a major question at the quarterback position. Will rookie Daniel Jones earn any playing time?

The simple truth is 2019 will likely be Eli Manning’s final season — his contract is expiring and his physical attributes are degrading with father time. While the offensive line has been rebuilt and we will see more efficiency from the veteran, dishing out $20 million per season for a player that can’t close games with ease like he used to is too expensive.

Even if he returned on a lighter deal, Jones needs to begin developing at some point, and I can’t imagine the Giants sitting idly by while his rookie contract ages.

Therefore, by default, the organization will, probability wise, move on into a new era – one of youth.

However, there are scenarios where Jones earns playing time this upcoming season, potentially starting…

Here are 2 scenarios where the New York Giants rookie can start:

As you might have guessed, both instances include Manning and him failing, essentially. In the first scenario, Manning is playing poorly and Jones replaces him, taking over the starting role and getting his development started.

Last season, Eli relied heavily on Saquon Barkley to pick up the load and rack up yards. Barkley’s 7.9 yards per reception and 721 receiving yards helped the veteran passer exponentially. So much so, he accounted for 91 of Eli’s 380 completions. That’s a massive chunk, and it attests to his influence.

It can be viewed as a negative, though, as Manning struggled to move through his progressions due to the amount of pressure the offensive line allowed, but that’s his weakness. Manning doesn’t have the mobility to create time for himself or extend plays, and that’s a problem in the modern-day NFL.

Jones has the ability to utilize his legs when the pocket collapses, and his above-average athleticism will be a difference-maker, especially against division rivals that aren’t accustomed to the Giants having a passer with the ability to run.

[su_posts template=”templates/teaser-loop.php” posts_per_page=”3″ tax_term=”151323″ order=”desc”]

In scenario two, Manning gets injured. History tells us this likely won’t occur, but anything is possible in the NFL (knock on wood). This would immediately thrust Daniel into the starting role. It’s not an ideal case for the rookie, but it’s a reality a lot of players face.

Now, I anticipate the Giants want to keep Jones on the sideline as much as possible so he can learn and soak in all the knowledge and preparation-oriented details Eli has to offer. It will give him the tools to succeed when he eventually does take over.

I don’t expect Jones to start any games in 2019, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see him come in and play in garbage time.

New York Giants News, 7/18 – Baker Mayfield has no idea

Baker Mayfield goes after New York Giants fans.

Good Morning, New York Giants Fans!

Before we get started, let’s get one thing clear, Baker Mayfield has less of a clue about Giants fans that Browns fans do about winning.

If you haven’t seen what Baker said about us, check it out. Fans who actually care…yes, New Yorkers expect production and a winning team, but when you’re in the biggest sports market in the world and have more people per capita than a small farming ranch in Ohio, it starts to make sense.

What Mayfield would have done to enjoy the spotlight of New York — but that’s not what I want to talk about, I want to talk about what we’ve been through with Odell Beckham Jr., and still stood by him. While some voiced their concern, many, including myself, rooted for Beckham despite his madness.

The kicking net, the peeing like a dog celebration, the drugs and girls in Paris, the fighting with Josh Norman, the temper tantrums, the mid-game IVs…we can go on all day. There hasn’t been a lick of drama with the Giants in weeks, I wonder why?

The latest development, Kam Moore, a safety for Big Blue, was reportedly involved in a physical altercation with a woman. He was immediately suspended by the team and will likely be released upon confirmation of the incident. It was one-day news, nothing more. What GM Dave Gettleman has done to turn the organization from a laughing stock to a respectable franchise has been nothing short of impressive.

Again, Giants fans are some of the most loyal fans in the world. Even if we all hate each other for no reason, we all just want our team to be successful at the end of the day. That’s a simple reality, and Mayfield will never be able to experience the love we have to offer. Fortunately for us, Saquon Barkley will.
