New York Giants Have Cornerback Competition With Beal Return

New York Giants, DeAndre Baker

DeAndre Baker is not a good cornerback at the moment. That’s not a knock on Baker, however – the rookie has been thrown into a New York Giants defense that lacks depth at the position, and expected to play to a similar standard as the team’s other starting cornerback, Janoris Jenkins.

Baker isn’t surrounded by top tier players to cover for his status as an inexperienced rookie, and the defensive coaches have been unable to come up with schemes where he won’t be a consistent target for opposing quarterbacks looking to pick up yardage down the field.

It’s not exactly a fair situation for the first round draft pick, but it might get worse for Baker – or better, depending on if you see spending some time on the bench as a better alternative for Baker than continuing to be the main target of opposing offenses.

The Giants have, of course, activated Sam Beal. That’s relevant because Beal was projected as one of the top competitors for Baker during the offseason, and may have ended up with a starting spot outright if it wasn’t for injury keeping him off the field. Beal’s career has been plagued by injury so far, and the cornerback hasn’t played a NFL game yet after being taken in the supplemental draft in 2018 by the Giants.

His first season was missed with a shoulder injury, and hamstring injury landed Beal on the IR list this season, which some believed the corner wasn’t going to return from.

But Beal is back on the active roster which means that he should see the field soon – whether that’s as a starter or a backup remains to be seen but few would complain about some competition for Baker given his early performances… Even if those performances are the expectation, based on the situation he was thrown into by circumstance.

Of course, some of the blame does fall to Baker – he admitted after the team’s loss to the Cowboys that he’s still in the process of learning the playbook, more than halfway into the season.

“The playbook. Just knowing the plays. Knowing what I need to do. Knowing my assignment,” Baker said when asked about what he needed to improve.

Beal hasn’t been on the field but one advantage of spending so much time on the sideline is that he’s had plenty of time to learn the system without the pressure of playing. Will that help Beal in a cornerback battle? We’ll see.

It’s impossible, though, to deny that there is a quarterback battle. The Giants need better play at the position or they aren’t going to get more than one or two more wins this year – Amari Cooper’s performance in the Dallas game demonstrates that point.

Beal isn’t guaranteed to be the improvement that they’re looking for, but at this point, they have nothing to lose and everything to gain from making it a competition and giving him a shot to knock off DeAndre Baker as the starter next to Jenkins.

New York Giants news, 11/3 – Sam Beal might never touch the field, Leonard Williams, more

New York Giants

Good Morning, New York Giants Fans!

The New York Giants selected cornerback Sam Beal in the third round of the Supplemental Draft last year. While general manager Dave Gettleman was excited about his potential, Beal hasn’t been able to get on the field in any capacity.

After a predisposed shoulder injury that led to Beal receiving season-ending surgery in 2018, he injured his hamstring this past offseason, spiraling him into a pit of rehabilitation and patience. Beal is now finally on the verge of returning, but head coach Pat Shurmur stated that the corner might not be able to return this week from the injured list. At this point, it’s seeming that Beal might never might it onto a professional football field, considering his bones are made of glass and ligaments of jello.

The Giants could use his talents, despite his inability to remain healthy. He can develop into a quality defensive back, but getting onto the field is step number one.

Leonard Williams is confident in his abilities:

While Williams hasn’t recorded a sack this season, despite playing in every game for the Jets, he’s left his mark in other ways. He has recorded 20 combined tackles and five quarterback hits, but his talents and attributes scream production. His long frame and bustling shoulders pack a punch, and defensive coordinator James Bettcher will be looking to take advantage of his physical tools.

“I think I’m pretty good in all aspects of a defensive lineman,’’ Williams said, per the NY Post. “I have almost everything you want in a defensive lineman — I can stop the run, I can pass rush, I can play nose tackle, three technique, five technique.

Standing him up alongside Dexter Lawrence and B.J. Hill/Dalvin Tomlinson should give the New York Giants plenty of leverage in the trenches on defense. Opposing offenses simply can’t double team all three down defensive lineman and compensate for pass rushers at the same time.

New York Giants: Sam Beal Fighting For Comeback Versus Dallas

Leading up to next week’s Monday Night Football game between the New York Giants and the Dallas Cowboys, fans of the Giants will anxiously await the statuses of several injury plagued players – Sterling Shepard and Corey Ballentine are two names that have been in the news recently for returning to full participation in practice, but Ballentine isn’t the only cornerback that’s close to making a return.

Sam Beal is also struggling with injury, something that he’s very familiar with after missing his entire rookie season with an injury – this was supposed to be the year that Beal would reach the field and break out, but a hamstring injury has the cornerback fighting to make it back off the injured reserve list.

Beal’s progress may be close, based on his statements on Thursday.

“They know I want to be out there. I’m not even thinking about it because I know it’s coming, I am just waiting for my moment, I’m waiting for that text or call, just ready for that moment. They haven’t told me, they will tell me later. I’ll eventually find out. Whatever happens, happens,” Beal said about the subject of being added to the active roster again.

While there’s no word on when Beal will get back on the roster, it seems like there definitely is an expectation that it’s something that will happen in the near future.

It also looks like Beal wants a comeback against the rival Dallas Cowboys, who the Giants face on Monday.

“I have so much aggression, that’s the perfect team.  The Cowboys, they are not an easy team, so I can’t go out there 50 percent or 80 percent, I have to come out there 100 percent. They want to see the real me, I’ll get there though, only a couple more days.”

The Giants could use further help in the long term at cornerback, with Janoris Jenkins seemingly having a numbered amount of days with the team despite not being moved on the trade deadline. Will they find that help in Sam Beal? We might just get to see if Beal is indeed able to make a return against Dallas.

Good Morning, New York Giants Fans!

With the New York Giants defense already ranking towards the bottom of the league in overall efficiency, it’s difficult to imagine their unit improving if they find a trade partner for Janoris Jenkins. It would not only thrust rookie DeAndre Baker into the No. 1 corner role but 2018 Supplemental Draft pick, Sam Beal, would also have a starting gig.

Beal, who missed all of his rookie campaign with a predisposed shoulder injury, returned this offseason just to be placed on IR with a hamstring ailment. He has failed to make a regular-season appearance, let alone a pre-season one, which is hugely concerning for a team that has zero-depth at one of the most important defensive positions.

If the New York Giants lose to the Detroit Lions on Sunday, the chances of Jenkins leaving in a trade increase, but if they win, he could be kept around for one more season. Ultimately, taking away from their defense could lead to a slew of negative consequences. Imagine the unit losing their best cornerback, which would increase the production of opposing offenses, and in turn, demoralize the unit and team a cohesive group. This could spill over into the locker room and the atmosphere general manager Dave Gettleman is fighting so hard to rebuild.

While this a pessimistic idea, it’s a realistic occurrence that happens/has happened on the Giants before. The locker room is a sensitive place that can be affected by the loss of key contributors.

Sterling Shepard injury update:

The Giants will travel to Detroit without Shepard for a third consecutive game on Sunday. As a precaution, Shepard will sit after suffering a second concussion in four weeks in week four against the Minnesota Vikings. The longevity of his health is at stake, and the New York Giants have done an excellent job taking that reality seriously.

New York Giants news, 10/25 – Should Sterling Shepard be done for the season? Sam Beal returns

New York Giants receiver, Sterling Shepard.

Good Morning, New York Giants Fans!

If the New York Giants fall to the Detroit Lions on Sunday afternoon, they will be sitting at 2-6 with no hope in sight. This could spell the end for Sterling Shepard’s shortlived season, as he’s only participated in four of seven games so far and will most likely miss week eight.

Shepard suffered two concussions in a three-week span that forced him out for multiple games, and at this point, it comes down to his future health and brain function. With CTE and neuropsychology becoming a more prevalent part of the NFL, managing Shepard’s brain injury becomes a bit more tricky.

He understands the nuances that accompany these types of injuries, but he also realizes that football is his life and his means for providing for his family. If the New York Giants lose their fourth consecutive game, the question arises — is it worth tossing Shepard back out onto the field?

For the sake of business, he will undoubtedly make a return, but for the purpose of longevity, the Giants would be wise to place him on IR.

Sam Beal finally makes a return:

The gift that keeps on giving injuries … Sam Beal will finally make his return after missing his entire rookie season due to predisposed shoulder injury and missing the first seven games of the regular season (hamstring). Defensive coordinator James Bettcher indicated that Beal would play on the outside, almost assuming that Janoris Jenkins might be on his way out.

Beal has the tools to be a serviceable corner in the NFL, but replacing Jenkins is a tall task, especially after having missed essential developmental time. I can’t imagine he’s ready to take on the work-load of a full team, but we will surely find out.

New York Giants: Janoris Jenkins being shopped by Giants (reports)

New York Giants, Janoris Jenkins

With the trade deadline winding to a close in five days, the New York Giants were expected to be sellers given their 2-5 record and hefty price tags littering the salary cap. One of those trade options is cornerback Janoris Jenkins, who was once considered a top cover corner in the league.

Jenkins has fallen off in recent years, failing to maintain consistency on the defense, and the organization’s inability to put together a winning team might have contributed in some fashion. The veteran defender is very prone to emotions, which has led him to awful performances, similar to the 190-yard, three-touchdown performance Mike Evans placed on his head in week three.

However, Jenkins can be of serious value on a contending team that has the right pieces in place and a positive atmosphere. On Thursday afternoon, defensive coordinator James Bettcher indicated that Sam Beal, who is finally returning from a hamstring injury, will play on the outside, indicating that Jenkins could be on his way out and that the Giants will move forward with the youngsters.

According to Albert Breer, Jackrabbit is on the market.

We can imagine that the Giants will aim to gain a third-round pick for his services, considering his track record and ability to be an elite player. A top team looking for corner help would benefit significantly from his experience and skill-set. Realistically, he might only garner a 4th-5th round selection.

How much will Janoris Jenkins cost the New York Giants in 2020?

Jenkins will earn a hefty $14.75 million next season, which the Giants will be looking to get off the books. He will count $3.5 million in dead-cap, which we can imagine GM Dave Gettleman is not too keen on absorbing. Gaining any value from him before the trade deadline would be a huge positive, but it would also leave a gaping hole in the secondary with rookie DeAndre Baker present to fill.

New York Giants news, 10/17 – Sterling Shepard miraculous return, cornerback finally activated

New York Giants, Sterling Shepard

Good Morning, New York Giants Fans!

In week five of the regular season for the New York Giants, top pass-catcher Sterling Shepard suffered his second concussion of the season. A blow to the offense and a potentially devastating blow to Shepard, who could’ve been in real trouble concerning his overall health.

However, Shepard has already begun practicing in individual drills and could only miss one more game due to concussion symptoms. Being cleared for exercises in the same capacity as Saquon Barkley and Evan Engram is fantastic news, given Shepard’s teammates will likely suit up against the Arizona Cardinals.

Sterling is eyeing a week eight return against the Detroit Lions, though, after most believed he would be sidelined for at least a month. Call it a miraculous recovery, or just a minor concussion; the concerns remain present. Gaining back two playmakers will open up the offense for rookie quarterback Daniel Jones, who hasn’t even played a full quarter with Barkley starting at running back.

Jones still managed to average over 30 points in his first two contests, but lacking offensive support against top top-five defenses in the league spelled trouble, and it resulted in just 28 points over two games. Reinforcements are on the way, but veteran signing Golden Tate showed he can supplement the loss of Shepard for the time being, but when all cylinders are clicking, the Giants offense could be one of the more intimidating units in the league.

Other injury news:

The Giants gained back 2018 Supplemental Draft pick Sam Beal after another spell on the team’s injured reserve. He will finally have the opportunity to suit up and compete in a regular-season game in the coming weeks. Hopefully, he can prove his worth in live-action, considering he’s missed a full season and a half rehabbing different injuries. The Giants are in desperate need of help in the secondary, and Beal could be the player to provide it.

New York Giants: A First Glance At The 53 Man Roster

The New York Giants trimmed their roster down from 90 players to 53 players on Saturday, August 31st. It is also important to note that 31 other teams also let go of 47 players.

•Eli Manning

•Daniel Jones

•Alex Tanney

•Antonio Hamilton

•Sam Beal

•Jabrill Peppers

Special Teams:

•Aldrick Rosas

•Riley Dixon

•Zak DeOssie

Roster Construction:

3 Running Backs:

Elijah Penny could operate as the emergency 4th running back. Running back is Penny’s original position, making an extra roster spot available elsewhere on the depth chart. Keeping 1 less running back is also easier when the team possesses one of the best and youngest running backs in the league.

3 Quarterbacks:

This isn’t unusual but it’s worth noting the team’s decision to release their recent draft pick in Kyle Lauletta in favor of Alex Tanney, a career backup. This means the team didn’t expect much from Lauletta, to begin with, but they might attempt to stash him on the practice squad if he clears waivers.

5 Inside Linebackers:

This would be unheard of before James Bettcher arrived in 2018 but his 3-4 defense requires more inside linebackers than the previous 4-3 defense. Keeping 4 of them would be more typical but the team has a weakness at this position, making players like BJ Goodson and Nate Stupar hard to send packing. The team is approaching this situation with a “strength in numbers” philosophy.

5 Defensive Lineman:

This is a light unit, not even having a backup for each position on the field. The team either plans on claiming a defensive lineman in the next week or it means they feel all 5 they kept are proficient, leading to less of a need for depth. The team released John Jenkins who many thought was shining in the preseason so they might actually plan on rolling with 5 defensive linemen. This unit should be one of the strengths of the team in 2019.

11 Defensive Backs:

This is a rather large group of defensive backs but this was also one of the stronger units on the team. The only player who arguably sticks out as a potential cut-candidate is Sean Chandler. He’s currently the 5th safety and could be the first to go if the team files a claim for another player.

Other notable players to make the team are Antonio Hamilton and Sam Beal. Hamilton has bounced around a little bit but put together a solid preseason. Sam Beal was kept for his pricetag alone, he rarely participated in practice but the team used a 3rd round pick on him in the Supplemental Draft. Once this young unit gets their sea legs they’ll be one of the stronger units on this roster as well.

Feel-Good Stories:

Alonzo Russell was in the Giants camp last year and was ultimately released when it came time to close camp. This year he came back much improved and dominated in preseason games, creating separation deep down the field more often than not. He also caught the game-winning touchdown pass from Kyle Lauletta to close out the team’s undefeated preseason against the Patriots. He also proved himself as a blocker and even a tackler when needed. His hard work paid off as he made the initial 53 man roster this time.

Paul Perkins missed the entire 2018 season with a pectoral issue. With Saquon Barkley taking the league by storm throughout the season Paul Perkins seemed like a forgotten man. Perkins made the best of his situation, winning over a new coaching staff in the classroom and ultimately earning himself a second chance to make the team. He wasn’t the best reserve ball-carrier this summer but he proved his worth as a reserve pass-catching back.

Final Thoughts:

Overall the offensive unit actually appears to be in decent shape, pending which version of Eli Manning shows up in 2019. The offensive line looks much improved, the pass-catching units are less top-heavy. The running backs look good even behind Saquon Barkley. This will truly be the year Eli can’t have any excuses.

On defense, this team contains adequate talent but there will be young players on the field. Dexter Lawrence and DeAndre Baker will be starters as rookies and Julian Love will get some playing time at safety as a rookie. The entire cornerback unit is very young outside of Janoris Jenkins, rookie mistakes should be expected.

With each team being nearly chopped in half yesterday you can expect some transactions with almost every team including the New York Giants. They’ve figured out the bulk of who they’re keeping but they might tinker with the roster a little more as they get ready to prepare for the Dallas Cowboys on September 8th.

New York Giants Corner Could Miss Another Season Due To IR

There’s not that many players that have as much bad luck as New York Giants cornerback Sam Beal, who should be in his second year as a regular player in the team’s defensive back rotation but in reality has yet to play a single game in the NFL. Beal was taken out of commission in training camp and didn’t appear in either the preseason or regular season last year – and despite his best efforts to come back, the same thing might happen again this season.

Beal is one of the players who didn’t participate in the final training camp practice of the year, and it doesn’t look like he’ll play in the preseason finale against the New England Patriots either, based on that fact. With Beal missing a lot of time in training camp and not playing in the preseason conclusion, the injured reserve list seems like a likely option.

But going on the IR list, of course, has consequences. Teams can only bring back two players from IR per season, but players have to remain on the list for at least eight weeks which means that, even in Beal comes back, his season will be significantly cut into.

And there’s no guarantee that the Giants would prioritize Beal, a player that hasn’t yet played in an NFL game, as one of the two that they’re allowed to bring back from the list following week 8. Beal himself, however, is confident about not ending up on IR again.

Was that confidence well placed? We’ll see soon enough following the final preseason outing – for now, though, things don’t look good for the second year cornerback, who might just go another year without being able to see the field.

New York Giants: 3 surprise roster cut candidates

New York Giants linebacker, B.J. Goodson.

The New York Giants are inching closer to their final preseason game of the year against the New England Patriots. While that’s a great thing for fans patiently waiting for the start of the regular season, fringe-roster players are still playing for their livelihoods.

Here are three surprise cuts for the New York Giants:

1.) CB Sam Beal

The Giants’ Supplemental Draft pick from 2018 has yet to play in a regular-season game let alone a preseason matchup this year. He missed all of his rookie season with a predisposed shoulder injury that required surgery. Now that his shoulder is healed, his hamstring has been acting up.

His lack of experience in a live-action setting could force the Giants to cut him and allocate the roster spot towards a player with actual, proven value. This would undoubtedly be a surprise but justifiable.

2.) LB B.J. Goodson

At this point in Goodson’s career, he seems to be losing value with every passing day. Injuries have hurt his development and consistency, and Ryan Connelly, the rookie out of Wisconsin, has taken full advantage of that.

Connelly has been working with the starting team in the absence of Alec Ogletree, and Goodson has been seeing time with the second and third-string defense. His influence last year isn’t noteworthy, and it seems as if his time as a Giant could be coming to an end. The only reason head coach Pat Shurmur would keep him around is because of the lack of depth at the linebacker position and his familiarity with DC James Bettcher’s scheme.

3.) RB Paul Perkins

With 546-yards rushing to his name, Perkins is a glorified scat-back. His minimal power and high injury risk make him a waste of a roster spot. This might not be a surprise cut, but his value is next to none on a Giants team with plenty of talent at the running back position.

Behind Saquon Barkley and Wayne Gallman, Perkins and Rod Smith have been battling it out for a third-string roster spot. Smith is the more wise choice that can help Gallman and Barkley refine the mental aspects of their game, which makes him a more valuable option.

Perkins once had a ton of potential, but his production would come from the passing game, and the Giants don’t need him with Barkley and Gallman more than capable of succeeding in that facet.
