New York Jets Sign Connor McGovern (Report)

New York Jets, Connor Mcgovern

Connor McGovern was ranked as one of the top free-agent offensive linemen on the market, and now he’s on the New York Jets. Despite missing out on Graham Glasgow, the Jets remained steadfast in their mission for a new center. The Jets were rumored to have interest in Steven Wisniewski, a long time Eagle with connections to Joe Douglas. However, they went after McGovern and signed him to anchor the center spot for the future.

The Contract

McGovern signed a three year 27 million dollar deal to join the Jets with 16 million guaranteed. He will get A LOT more guaranteed money than Fant and much more job security within the parameters. McGovern got a very similar deal to that of Matt Paradis, a guy, the Jets, struck out on a year ago.

His Role

McGovern, as previously mentioned, becomes the anchor of the center spot. He also becomes the best center this team has had since Nick Mangold. He is 26 years old (turns 27 in April) and will be a Jet for the foreseeable future. Boy, is he talented. McGovern played 1,019 snaps last year and was flagged zero times and only gave up a single sack. The guy is a beast. PFF graded him as one of the better young centers in all of football. Production-wise he is efficient, and he becomes a great young piece.

What’s Next For The Line

The Jets woke up and added McGovern and resigned Alex Lewis. The interior of the line could be entirely sured up with the addition of G Greg Van Roten from Carolina. He’d give them a very good interior line and allow the Jets to focus on the tackle spot and other areas in the draft.

Should The New York Giants Make A Change At Offensive Line Coach?

On January 15, the Indianapolis Colts made a position coach change. The Colts fired their offensive line coach, Dave DeGugliemo. This move by the Colts prompted plenty of Giants fans to wonder if their team will make a change on their own coaching staff and pursue DeGugliemo.

Dave DeGugliemo’s Resumé And Connections With The New York Giants:

Dave DeGugliemo actually used to be part of the New York Giants’ coaching staff. He was a part of the 2008 Super Bowl victory in which the Giants had one of the league’s best offensive lines. DeGugliemo served as the Giants’ assistant offensive line & quality control coach from 2004 to 2008.

In 2018, the Indianapolis Colts had arguably the best offensive line in the NFL. They showed massive improvement from 2017 to 2018. In 2017, the Colts had the 25th ranked offensive line according to Pro Football Focus. DeGugliemo helped turn that around in 2018, as they were the 6th ranked offensive line per PFF.

Part of this change came from having DeGugliemo as the offensive line coach. He was brought to Indianapolis in 2018 by head coach candidate Josh McDaniels, who was later replaced by Frank Reich. Dave was the only assistant coach that Reich did not hire himself, so after one season he has decided that he wants to make his own hire.

Dave DeGugliemo has been part of some of the best offensive lines in the NFL over the past 15 years. Aside from working with the Giants, DeGugliemo also worked as an offensive line coach for the Dolphins in 2009-2011. The Dolphins 2009 offensive line unit was ranked second in the NFL according to Pro Football Focus. They also ranked 8th in 2010.

The Dolphins’ offensive line struggled in 2011, and DeGugliemo moved on to become the offensive line coach of the Jets in 2012. The Jets’ offensive line ranked 3rd in the NFL in 2012. He only spent one season with the Jets and did not coach in 2013. In 2014, Dave went to the New England Patriots and coached the Giants’ current starting left tackle, Nate Solder.

Dave DeGugliemo has an extremely impressive track record. The New York Giants offensive line has been struggling for years and did not show much improvement when new offensive line coach Hal Hunter took over in 2018. The Giants could look to bring DeGugliemo back to New York in order to fix their offensive line issues in 2019.

New York Giants: Here’s What The Starting Offensive Line Might Look Like

The New York Giants are bound to see a major improvement on the offensive line going into the 2018 season. They acquired left tackle Nate Solder for $62 million over four-years, and left guard Patrick Omameh for $15 million over three-years.

General manager Dave Gettleman also retained center Brett Jones and moved former LT Ereck  Flowers to the right side to compete at RT. Flowers and undrafted sophomore Chad Wheeler will battle it out for the starting role.

The NFL draft is approaching and the New York Giants can go several different directions. You don’t want to miss out on any BREAKING news! Sign up for FREE here.

Predicting what the offensive line might look like is difficult, as it all depends on the draft, but let’s give it a try nonetheless.

LT: Nate Solder

Solder will immediately improve the Giants’ and Eli Manning’s blind side. This should give Manning more time to allow him to find his receivers more frequently. In 2017, Manning was forced to get rid of the ball in less than three seconds on average due to the inability of the offensive line to block.

LG: Patrick Omameh

The departure of Justin Pugh left a huge hole at left guard for the Giants, and they decided to look towards the Jaguars for support. Seeing that Leonard Fournette had such a successful year, Gettleman took a flier on former Jaguars left guard Patrick Omameh.

C: Brett Jones

The Giants signed Brett Jones to a modest deal in the hopes of plugging in him at center. After former center Weston Richburg went down with a concussion, Jones filled his spot valiantly. Moving into the 2018 season, Jones should get his opportunity to perform as a starter for a revamped Giants offense.

RG: Will Hernandez

This is my wildcard. I’m predicting the Giants trade back in the draft and go after UTEP lineman Will Hernandez late in the first round (Bills 22nd overall pick). Plugging Hernandez in would immediately improve the right guard position and hopefully solidify the line for years to come.

The UTEP star lineman is 6-foot-2 and 327-pounds. Hernandez has short arms and a smaller frame, but his power is unparalleled. He’s ferocious in the run game and simply overpowers interior lineman at the point of attack. He would be a stellar addition to a team trying to piece together a decent offensive line for Manning.

RT: Ereck Flowers

I have an odd feeling Flowers is going to revitalize his career at the right tackle position. While he struggled mightily at left tackle, he could see an improvement on his dominant right side. Adapting to the right tackle position from a technical standpoint could be Flowers’ biggest challenge, but if he can tackle (that’s all he did against edge rushers last season) that obstacle he could end up surprising everybody.
