Precious Achiuwa Could Become Late First Round Gem For The New York Knicks

The New York Knicks General Manager Scott Perry is inching closer to retaining his position and taking a few more swings at the 2020 NBA Draft on behalf of the New York Knicks. One intriguing prospect to keep an eye on toward the latter part of the draft’s first round is Precious Achiuwa. The Memphis Tiger who recently declared for the 2020 NBA Draft averaged 15.8-points, 10.8-rebounds, 1.9-blocks, and 1.1-steals per game during his lone season in Memphis under Head Coach Anfernee Hardaway. Memphis Tigers season ended with a 21-10 overall and 10-8 record finishing 5th in the ACC. The raw project Achiuwa could become a gem for the New York Knicks with their 27th pick in the late first round.

The 6’9″ 225lbs. forward who possesses a massive 7’2″ wingspan is a big wing/combo forward with elite-level athletic ability. He’s got a strong frame with great length and explosive leaping ability. Precious Achiuwa possesses awesome coordination and body control. The Nigerian native can play the forward position, however, his best NBA position is projected to be as a big wing and he’s already showing that skill set.

The New York Knicks’ needs are all over the place at the moment. A late first-round draft pick like Achiuwa won’t do much for the Knicks right now, however, it may be a huge addition 2-3 years from now if player development is prioritized to a certain extent and Achiuwa is a candidate for Defensive Player of The Year during the 2022-23 NBA season. Yes, the defense is his calling card and the young Bronx native knows it and relishes it.

Mock drafts have Achiuwa being drafted early in the first round while others have him slipping into the late first round and potentially early second round. Anything can happen on draft night, however, if the Knicks land Precious Achiuwa with the 27th overall pick, this would be considered a steal due to his defensive upside and respectable offensive ceiling.

Killian Hayes could be New York Knicks’ point guard of the future

The New York Knicks have their eyes on the 2020 NBA draft. While the draft order is yet to be determined, the Knicks will be picking in the lottery and have a shot at some of the top prospects. One player they should target is French point guard Killian Hayes.

Hayes is becoming the draft’s worst kept secret. Hayes is was born in America but played in France’s basketball academies growing up. He currently plays for Ratiopharm ULM in the Bundesliga, the top basketball league in Germany.

The 18-year-old has mostly flown under the radar but has recently been making waves among scouts. Kevin O’Connor of The Ringer recently released his 2020 NBA draft guide, and Hayes was the number one prospect. The top three prospects have typically consisted of LaMelo Ball, Anthony Edwards, and James Wiseman. Now it looks as though Hayes is in the mix.

Elite Passer. Elite Scorer.

Hayes has everything you want in a modern point guard. From a physical standpoint, he’s got great size at 6’5 tall and a 6’9 wingspan. More importantly, Hayes is a talented scorer and phenomenal passer who’s game seems to improve every month.

Hayes shooting has been inconsistent. However, he’s got great form and keeps improving his numbers. In 10 games in Eurocup, before play was suspended, Hayes was shooting 39% from 3 and 90% from the free-throw line. Hayes’ impressive handles allow him to create space and score off of the dribble. He’s starting to put it together.

Killian Hayes is already advanced as a playmaker. His processing is quite advanced for his age, and his ability to find open shooters pops off the screen. Hayes is already an advanced pick and roll ball handler with a good understanding of pro basketball spacing.

What really stands out watching his film is his speed. Hayes’ quickness and burst are clearly a step above some of the other guards projected as lottery picks.

Killian Hayes still has kinks to work out. He’s incredibly left hand dominant and needs to improve his defense. However, his combination of quickness, scoring, and passing make him one of the most captivating prospects in the entire draft. An ascending player, Killian Hayes is exactly what the New York Knicks want in a franchise point guard.

New York Knicks Draft Profile: Aaron Nesmith

The New York Knicks have been adamant about one thing that they must add to their team this offseason: Perimeter shooting. The lack of shooting has hampered the Knicks’ offense in 2019. One player that could help solve the problem is Vanderbilt Sophomore Aaron Nesmith.

Nesmith is the best shooter in the entire draft. He shot an other-worldly 52% from three on over 8 attempts per game this past season. Overall he averaged just over 23 points a game for the Commodores. He can flat out score.

While we don’t know exactly where in the draft the New York Knicks will be picking, Nesmith would be a reach if they were to end up with a top 5 pick. He would more likely be an option with the Clippers’ pick that the Knicks acquired in the Marcus Morris Sr. trade.

Fitting in with the Knicks

If the Knicks can nab Nesmith with the Clippers’ pick, he could be of tremendous value. At 6’6 tall and weighing 213lbs Nesmith can play the 2 or the 3 at the NBA level. Having shooters like Nesmith will spread the floor and ultimately benefit everyone.

Athletically, he’s not anywhere near some of the top prospects, and that is his greatest flaw. Of course, what he lacks in athleticism, he makes up for as a dead-eye shooter. Opposing defenses simply can’t afford to let him roam the perimeter undetected.

His ceiling may not be that of a superstar, but you cannot always draft a player based on top-end potential. Nesmith is a high IQ player who is the best pure shooter in the entire draft. The Knicks need to start surrounding their playmakers with shooters, and Aaron Nesmith could help out right away.

New York Knicks Draft Profile: Nico Mannion

New York Knicks, Scott Perry, Steve Mills

The New York Knicks have been heavily rumored to be interested in drafting one of the top guards in the 2020 NBA draft. There isn’t much consensus as to who the best player in the draft is. For the most part, Lamelo Ball and Anthony Edwards are the two who frequently appear at the top. One prospect who could be selected in the top 10 is Arizona point guard Nico Mannion.

The Knicks currently have the 6th worst record in the league. As much as they’d love a top 3 pick, they have to prepare to draft in the 6-10 range as well. Nico Mannion could be exactly what they need.

He’s a complete point guard.

Mannion has an advanced skill set for someone who turned 19 years old a month ago. The 6’3 point guard has an NBA game. A terrific ball-handler who can dice his way through multiple defenders, not only can he create for himself, he’s a more than capable passer. A great decision-maker who makes the right reads.

His shooting is constantly improving and should easily translate to the league. He shot just under 33% from 3 and 80% from the free-throw line this season.  Nico has shown the ability to make difficult shots off the dribble. The form on his shot is terrific: It’s quick and fluid.

His athletic profile isn’t jaw-dropping, but he’ll surprise people with his sudden bursts. He’ll need to work on his on-ball perimeter defense as he’s struggled to size up with stronger players. If he continues to grow into his body and add weight it would be a huge help for his defensive growth.

How he fits with the Knicks

Nico Mannion projects as a multi-threat point guard at the next level. Just how high his ceiling can be is hard to tell. The New York Knicks desperately need two things in their new backcourt players next season: Shooting and passing. Nico Mannion has both of them. His skills should immediately translate to the next level and make him a nice compliment to RJ Barrett in the backcourt.

New York Knicks: Who should they target with the Clippers’ draft pick?

New York Knicks

The New York Knicks have a lot of pressure to nail their picks in the upcoming 2020 NBA Draft. For the first time in recent memory, the Knicks have draft ammunition over the next few years.

On top of their own selections, the Knicks will have the Clippers’ 1st round pick, which was acquired in a trade for Marcus Morris Sr. just before the trade deadline. That pick currently sits at 27th overall, but the final position of the pick will ultimately be decided by where the Clippers finish in the playoffs.

There’s already been plenty of speculation about who the New York Knicks may target with their first pick, but who are some the prospects the Knicks could pursue with their other first-round selection?

Patrick Williams | SF/Wing | 6’8 | 225lbs |

A  raw, 18-year-old prospect who recently declared for the draft. Patrick Williams came off the bench for the Florida State Seminoles and was the ACC Sixth Man of The Year. Williams is the perfect example of taking upside overproduction.

Williams may be the most athletic wing player in the entire draft. His NBA frame as a freshman is something you don’t see very often.

What scouts love most about Williams is that he uses his athleticism on the defensive end. He can cause fits as a perimeter defender and is an emphatic shot-blocker. He hasn’t shown much of an ability to move off the dribble and is still learning how to create space for himself. His shooting is solid and should continue to improve. Williams is a terrific athlete who could develop into a solid 3&D player.

Theo Maledon | PG | 6’4 | 198lbs

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5j2ngwMIL_8

Another French guard? Maledon projects as a combo guard in the NBA. He won’t be the most effective passer, but his great speed allows him to easily create penetration and open up space for others. His shooting is incredibly promising, he’s shot the 3 at 37% in the EuroLeague.

His defense is spotty, and he will have to rely on his quickness to improve on it. Whether or not the Knicks draft a guard with their first pick, Maledon provides a scoring ability that could be valuable off the bench. He’s an intriguing prospect that definitely deserves a look.

Jalen Smith | PF/C | 6’10 | 225lbs

The term “Power Forward” may leave a sour taste in some Knicks fans’ mouths after they signed four of them this offseason. Jalen Smith, however, provides something the Knicks desperately need: Floor spacing.

The 20-year-old Maryland big man has shown the ability to be a consistent shooter. He shot 36.8% from 3 and 75% from the free-throw line. While he has a solid face-up game, he hasn’t shown much of an ability to create in the post.

Another thing to like about Smith is his defense. He’s been the rim protector for the Terrapins and has put up 2.4 blocks per game. He will need to continue to add strength in order to bang with NBA bigs, but his shooting and defensive upside make him someone that could contribute right away.

The New York Knicks’ top 5 point guard options in the 2020 NBA Draft

New York Knicks, LaMelo Ball

As the New York Knicks begin to shift their focus towards the offseason, they can start to turn their attention to the draft. This past season for the Knicks has been a frustrating logjam at point guard between Elfrid Payton, Frank Ntilikina and Dennis Smith Jr. Luckily for the New York Knicks, there were will be plenty of point guards available at the top of the draft. Here are the options.

1. Lamelo Ball

Lamelo is everything you want in a point guard prospect. Incredible vision, great size, and a dual-threat with his ability to score. Lamelo has basketball intangibles you cannot teach. His shooting isn’t bad, but it has had inconsistencies. As Lamelo fills out his lanky frame it should allow him to improve his strength on defense. A creative playmaker who can take the pressure off of R.J. Barrett, Lamelo would likely be the Knicks’ top choice.

2. Tyrese Haliburton

Haliburton may not be as flashy as Lamelo, but he’s still a terrific passer. He’s great at operating out of the pick and roll and putting constant pressure on a defense. He’s not incredibly explosive and you wonder what his ceiling as a scorer may be. Haliburton is already a terrific defender, and his leadership qualities would make him a great fit.

3. Cole Anthony

Once thought of as the potential top pick the draft, Anthony’s stock has taken a hit from poor efficiency in his freshman season with the Tar Heels. Anthony’s has a tremendous ability to score using sneaky athleticism and crafty finishing. He can shoot effectively off of the dribble. His future as a point guard is murky. He’s looked more like a “tweener” guard in college. His numbers at UNC may not be the best, but the NBA spacing could do wonders for his game.

4. Killian Hayes

The Frenchman has seen his draft stock rise lately due to his tremendous passing abilities and high basketball IQ. Many scouts see an ascending talent who could end up being a steal. He’s not the most explosive athlete. His spotty defense has also led to questions about whether he can be an effective 2-way player. Hayes will probably be one of the more divisive prospects among scouts.

5. Nico Mannion

The Arizona Wildcat has shot up draft boards since the beginning of the season. A true combo guard who can score from all over the court who has also made strides as a passer. He’s great at changing direction and creating shots for himself. His strength often leaves him vulnerable on defense. Some scouts may wonder if his strength will also hamper his offense in the NBA. Overall, a very smart and explosive point guard who may end up being underrated.

New York Knicks shouldn’t sleep on Gonzaga’s Brandon Clarke

Should the New York Knicks consider Brandon Clarke?

This is the start of a new series here on Empire Sports Media, where I’ll look at sixteen potential New York Knicks draftees, both in the first and second rounds, ahead of the 2019 NBA Draft on June 20th. Next up is Gonzaga’s Brandon Clarke.

https://twitter.com/Mike_Schmitz/status/839550560332193792

You may be wondering what a man with that shooting form is doing in the conversation for the third overall pick. But Brandon Clarke is firmly in the conversation in my mind, and where there are myriad questions about his game, and specifically his fit with the Knicks, he’d be no consolation prize if New York looked to trade back as has been reported.

Clarke was just a two-star recruit coming out of high school and played at San Jose State for two years before transferring to Gonzaga for his senior year. Clarke, once a popular “sleeper” prospect, exploded onto the scene in 2018-19 and became an analytical darling.

With per-game averages of 16.3 points, 8.6 rebounds, and 3.2 blocks, along with a slash line of .687/.267/.694, Clarke was a dominant force for the Zags. He was a star two-way player who played an important role on the team ultimately reaching the Elite Eight.

The pros and cons regarding Clarke for the New York Knicks:

Pros:

Clarke is extremely, extremely athletic, and he uses it to his advantage. On the offensive end, he explodes to the rim, consistently throwing down dunks and laying the ball in. Defensively, he was the premier shot-blocker this season and alters many attempts around the rim. That athleticism helps make up for his size (6’7, 6’8 wingspan).

Clarke also offers potential as a high-low creator. Gonzaga often puts him at the free throw line, letting him get to the rim with a dribble, or pass to the low man (often fellow prospect Rui Hachimura). Clarke showed great touch and these passes, and it is easy to picture him being the one hitting Mitchell Robinson on lobs.

Cons:

Clarke is just so darn small for the position. While the NBA is trending small, Clarke has almost-identical measurables to Klay Thompson, and he will have to become significantly more skilled to make up for it. Right now, he just isn’t. Draymond Green, who has similar measurables, is much faster and a superb ball-handler and passer. Other players are better shooters than Clarke.

Speaking of which, Clarke’s shooting is a total wild card. What was once the ugliest form in college basketball is now fairly smooth, but he didn’t show any sort of three-point prowess at Gonzaga. It could get much better, but if it doesn’t, he is borderline unplayable next to another poor shooter in Robinson.

Other Notes:

Clarke had the second-highest PER in college basketball history this past season (Zion Williamson has the highest). He was second in the NCAA in defensive plus-minus.

Clarke was insanely productive, and while it sounds simple, so many of the currently projected lottery prospects just weren’t (I’m looking at you, Cam Reddish, Jaxson Hayes, and Sekou Romeo Langford). He’d be a weird fit next to Mitchell Robinson, but I’ll bet on his shooting, defensive impact, and versatility at the next level.

New York Knicks: If RJ Barrett Goes to Memphis, What do the Knicks Do?

The New York Knicks could have a few options when it comes draft time.  Reports have surfaced that the Memphis Grizzlies has ‘mixed messages’ when it comes to point guard Ja Morant.

Morant went through a minor knee surgery and tweeted its success.

The Knicks have been linked heavily to RJ Barrett.  However, if the Grizzlies are, allegedly, rethinking Morant.  This opens up scenarios for the Knicks.

Barrett expressed his desire to play in New York.  He has also denied the Grizzlies a private workout.  It is clear that he wants to a Knick.  But with Morant’s knee giving the Grizzlies pause, they could end up selecting Barrett over Morant.

Saying the Grizzlies do select Barrett, who do the Knicks select?  The Knicks already have a young point guard in place with Dennis Smith Jr., who is under contract for next season.

Smith Jr. played well after coming to New York.  However, with the hype around Morant and his superstar like expectations, it only makes sense to take Morant.

Many have said that this is a ‘3-player draft’.  However, the draft is deeper then some may think.  Teams may believe more in Morant and give up a haul to get him.  Then, the possibility of the Knicks trading their pick comes back into play. But, that rumor is apparently untrue at the moment.

Regardless of who the Grizzlies selected with the second pick, the Knicks will have to select the best player available.  Whether that is Barrett or Morant, the Knicks will get a player that will be a franchise cornerstone for the next decade.

New York Knicks & NBA Lottery Recap

So… RJ Barrett anyone? Getting the third overall pick in the 2019 NBA Draft is certainly not what us Knicks fans wanted, and to see the Pelicans end up with Duke’s Zion Williamson is incredibly irritating. However, all is not lost, and here are some takeaways from Tuesday’s drama-filled night.

It’s Okay to be Upset

First and foremost, it is completely okay to be upset. The Knicks were the worst team in the league and are now picking third. Logically, that does not add up. I have said it before, and I will say it again: the one year the Knicks tanked properly, the NBA screwed the lottery odds. Tuesday night proved that statement to be true. As Stephen A. Smith said last night, “TYPICAL KNICKS!”

But it’s Not the End of the World

All that said, it is going to be okay. Keep in mind, the Knicks beat the odds tonight. They had a 49% chance at the fifth pick, and ended up picking third. That, by definition, is a win. Duke’s RJ Barrett, who is the presumptive third best player in the draft, is still a good prospect. There is still at least a greater-than-fifty percent chance that Kevin Durant is wearing the orange and blue next season. The Knicks are simply adding a highly-talented player, and that is something to be happy about.

It’s also important to keep things in perspective. While these odds seem unfair now, in last year’s draft, we would have been ecstatic. It is not the league’s fault that this draft is weak. In this draft, the top three is where you want to be. Barrett, Murray State’s Ja Morant, and Williamson are all a tier above everyone else in most people’s minds, and to be able to get one of those first two is a good thing.

Where Do We Go From Here?

The first thing I think Scott Perry should do is to get on the phone with David Griffin, general manager of the New Orleans Pelicans. While they seem confident that they can keep star Anthony Davis, he may want out no matter what, and a package centered around RJ Barrett and Kevin Knox may still be enticing. Would the ‘Pels be interested in a reunion of the two former Dukies?

If New York is unable to swing a deal for Davis, and it seems unlikely that Griffin would want to part ways with AD, then they should turn to the second-tier star market. Players such as Jrue Holiday or Bradley Beal may be available for the right price. And Barrett, who was considered to be the top prospect before this season, may rank higher on some teams’ boards than all of us realize. Could a team like Washington, that wants to shake things up, bite? It’s worth a shot.

If all else fails, the Knicks would just make the pick at number three. Barrett and Morant, to me, or both solid prospects that very clearly are benefitting from being in a weak draft. That doesn’t make them bad, and it should not preclude the Knicks from taking one of them at three. It doesn’t seem like many fans would be excited with Barrett, but given the chance to develop without shouldering a heavy load, he can be a really solid player.

This wasn’t the outcome most of us hoped for, but it is, in a word, fine. Let’s move on to bigger and better things (Hello, KD). Keep your heads up, Knicks fans, and please, no more tattoos.

A Guide to the Biggest Day in New York Knicks History

After months of speculation, wild conspiracy theories, and above all else, losing basketball games, the day is upon the New York Knicks. Tomorrow, May 14th, 8:30 ET on ESPN, the ping pong balls will be randomly selected. The team that has the number one spot will be granted the right to choose whichever prospect they would like.  However, in this draft, it’s Duke’s Zion Williamson.

This particular lottery, though, has special significance for our beloved Knicks. Not only is it the culmination of a 17-65 record, but it is also the lottery in which the New York Knicks will send former star center Patrick Ewing to the sit at the podium?  Or is it an awkwardly small classroom desk?  The table with the Knicks logo?

Ewing was the first overall pick in the 1985 draft, the year in which the lottery system was first implemented. The year when the Knicks had a 14.29% chance to win. This year New York has a 14.0% chance at number one, tied for the best odds in the league. However, because the lottery rules are utterly farcical, the team also has a roughly 47.9% chance to pick fifth overall.

Now that the math tutorial is over, I want to offer a guide for how to spend the biggest day in franchise history. Keep in mind karma. The basketball gods played a big role in this article. Anything I suggest either abides by the laws of both, or is an attempt to sway either entity in our favor. Have a day, Knicks fans. After 36 years, you have earned it.

Endlessly Run “Tankathon” Simulations

Before I explain more, a disclaimer: this activity may give you false hope, and it may bring you immense pain. However, it is so darn addicting.

The chances you have not heard of “Tankathon” are likely slim to none as a Knicks fan. It is the ex-girlfriend that you keep going back to, even though you know you shouldn’t. Over at Tankathon, they allow you to simulate the 2019 NBA draft lottery to your heart’s content, among other things. It’s an awesome idea, and it helps give tanking teams some hope that maybe all these losses will be beneficial in the long run.

If you have been following along this season, you have likely spent quite a bit of time on Tankathon. Even still, I felt obliged to include it as an activity to do when you are at work and on a computer or a phone. Our minds are racing with thoughts about tonight’s lottery.

As I mentioned before, this can cause immense stress, particularly every time you hit that orange button, and the L.A. Lakers or Dallas Mavericks logo pops into the number one slot. But this exercise can prepare you for the worst, as the Knicks don’t get the first pick often. Preparing for the worst is a GOOD thing, not bad. I was prepared for the worst just two weeks ago on NFL draft night.  My team, Giants, selected Daniel Jones at six overall, it helped ease the pain.

Watch Zion Williamson Highlights

I would highly recommend this option, even if it is likely to inspire false hope. Williamson averaged 22 points and 10 rebounds while tearing up the college basketball nation. He is one of the biggest reasons this day is so important for the Knicks franchise. He’s a generational prospect, and likely the best since Anthony Davis came out of Kentucky.

I have taken the liberty of creating a playlist for anyone interested in the jaw-dropping dunks and blocks. It’s ten videos, not too long, but not too short, and it is a mix of Williamson dominating Class AA basketball in South Carolina.  Also have some college highlights from his career sprinkled in. Enjoy.

Listen to (New) Music

Folks, this one is only, and I mean ONLY for karma purposes. Because when I say music, I don’t just mean any music. I mean everyone’s favorite blues/alternative/rock band. That’s right, I’m talking about JD & The Straight Shot. The band responsible for perhaps the most repetitive songs of all time.

I’d know because in preparation for this article, I listened to about ten of their songs. They’re not just not good, they’re hilariously bad. But perhaps the collective fanbase listening to some Dolan jams will trigger some sort of seismic shift in the basketball universe, so that the Knicks logo is the one that is in the first slot come Tuesday night.

I should’ve known not to listen to these songs, but I’m a desperate Knicks fan, what can I say? If you are familiar with Dolan’s band, you would recognize my allusion to his song, “I Should’ve Known,” which goes a little something like this:

I should’ve known

I should’ve known

I should’ve known

I should’ve thrown

Myself across his tracks

Stopped him from these vile attacks

I should’ve known

Yes, those are actual lyrics, and yes, every single song is just like that.

This particular song is Dolan’s apology for his relationship with Harvey Weinstein, and it could not possibly be any more disrespectful and inconsiderate. However, if you need some musical options for the biggest day in Knicks history, why not throw on JD and the Straight Shot? What’s the worst that could happen?

Go Play Some Basketball

I would strongly recommend this option, especially in between getting off work and the start of the lottery. Go outside, go to the YMCA, heck, even turn on NBA 2K if you have to. Pretend you’re Zion Williamson, or Ja Morant, or any of one of the premier prospects in this year’s draft (a short list, unfortunately).

I don’t care what age you are, we all love basketball, and we all want to be like Zion at some level. Whether you’re a teenager, like me, or an old man or woman, you can ball one last time before the future of the Knicks changes drastically.

Perhaps you can take inspiration from the guy below, who impersonated Williamson himself. Or, if you prefer, you can pretend Zion is in the Garden, throwing down earth-shattering dunks and sending opposing shot attempts into the fifth row. A kid can dream.

Attend the New York Knicks Fan Lottery Party

After this day, your eyes will be hurting from seeing other teams in the number one slot on Tankathon. Your legs will be sore from trying to jump like Zion, and trust me, your ears will undoubtedly be bleeding from listening to JD and the Straight Shot.

So what better way to relax while watching one of the biggest moments in franchise history than by hanging out with fellow Knicks lifers? J.B. and Jon from Knicks Film School, along with the guys from Poasting and Toasting, Gotham Sports Knicks, and Knicks Fan TV are hosting a lottery party at 7:30 P.M. ET.

10% of drink sales go to charity, and they are raffling off Knicks merchandise. If you know those guys, you know it’s going to be a great time. And while I can’t make it (I’m five years away from drinking and I live fifteen hours away), I definitely want as many Knicks fans to be in one place as possible, if only for karma’s sake.

Here’s the information for the lottery party…

https://twitter.com/KnickFilmSchool/status/1123562927506829313

While this was made (mostly) in jest, May 14th is truly the biggest day for our beloved Knicks. We must do whatever we can to make sure the ping pong ball with the NYK logo comes out in the first spot on Tuesday night. Even if that means enduring James Dolan’s god-awful band, then so be it.

To Knicks fans everywhere, I leave you with this:

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lPeC2Jp8oVw&w=560&h=315%5D

Good luck to everyone, and may the odds be ever in our favor.
