New York Giants news, 11/15 – Ranking the weakest positions on defense

November 15, 2019November 15, 2019 by Alexander Wilson
New York Jets, Markus Golden

Good Morning, New York Giants Fans!

The New York Giants have taken the word “rebuild” and turned it into an everlasting event that has no end. The better phrase would be “eternal rebuild,” considering their current state at 2-8 on the season.

Head coach Pat Shurmur has failed to show he can be a leader and disciplinary, especially in the secondary where a lack of effort has plagued the unit through the first 10 weeks of the season.

However, let’s take a peek at the weakest positions on the defensive side of the ball:

1.) Linebacker

With rookie Ryan Connelly suffering a torn ACL in the waning moments of a week four win over the Washington Redskins, every bit of quality the team had at the position was thrown out the window. Connelly managed to secure the top spot on the team in just four games, overtaking Alec Ogletree with little resistance.

The reality is, Connelly will have to regain his form and develop as if he were a rookie. General manager Dave Gettleman believes he has a solid piece to the puzzle in the Wisconsin product, but he must pair him with another solid linebacker. The only other quality option is Shaq Thompson in free agency, meaning he could look to the draft once again.

2.) Free safety

Antoine Bethea has to go. The glorified strong safety has been an absolute liability in the defensive backfield, but he serves a purpose closer to the line of scrimmage. His astronomical tackle totals are a bad sign for the defense, as it tells a story of missed tackles and bad coverage.

The New York Giants need a better cover safety to lock of deep balls and act as a ball-hawk. HaHa Clinton-Dix could be a solid target.

3.) Slot corner

With Corey Ballentine being chewed up as the Giants’ current slot corner, they must invest in the position further. Grant Haley is great against the run but is a liability in coverage as well, putting the Giants defense at a severe disadvantage against teams with superior slot-receivers.

4.) Pass rushers

Markus Golden has been the only serviceable option for Big Blue at outside linebacker. Logging 6.5 sacks, 15 QB hits and seven tackles for a loss, he has been reliable, but a one-year contract will force the Giants to make a decision on his future. Do they pay big money and retain him or let him walk and allocate the investment elsewhere? They could look to the draft to solidify the position with a player like Chase Young and sign another option to complement him, but if they choose to bring Golden back, I would be satisfied.

New York Giants: Ranking the biggest needs for the team going into 2020 offseason

November 12, 2019November 12, 2019 by Christian Morell
New York Giants, Daniel Jones

With the New York Giants resting and self-evaluating on their much-needed bye week, let’s take a look at what this team needs most to return to contention.

Here are the top need for the New York Giants on both sides of the ball:

1. Left Tackle

Not only is Nate Solder currently injured, but he’s continued to look like a mediocre tackle since joining the team in 2018. With Daniel Jones struggling with ball-security and pocket awareness, protecting his blindside should be the #1 priority of the offseason. Even if the team plans to bring Solder back, they need to plan on upgrading the left tackle position. That would leave him either giving right tackle a shot or on the sidelines as a reserve offensive lineman. The team will need to at least attempt to upgrade the left tackle position, whether Solder is on the team or not.

2. Right Tackle

Usually, the left tackle is considered the blindside blocker, but the way Daniel is playing, both tackles are on the blindside. Daniel Jones has fumbled 13 times in 8 games. His eyes remain downfield for nearly the duration of every play, not exactly a typical habit for quarterbacks. If Daniel Jones does not grow out of his bad habits in the pocket, he will need a fantastic offensive line to hide those significant flaws. It’s also fair to wonder how long Daniel Jones could play this way without being sidelined due to injuries. Once a team drafts their quarterback of the future, it is imperative to protect him with adequate NFL tackles. The Giants do not currently have a suitable tackle on either side of the formation in Nate Solder or Mike Remmers.

3. Cornerback

Janoris Jenkins, DeAndre Baker, and Grant Haley were among the league’s worst cornerback groups in weeks 1-8 of the 2019 season. Jenkins’ play was spotty but decent, while the other two were torched in almost every game with ease.

Overall, Jenkins has been targeted 59 times allowing 32 receptions for 419 yards and three touchdowns. Baker has flashed here and there, covering Chris Godwin well in particular, but unreliable overall. He’s been targeted 53 times allowing 37 passes completed for 572 yards and four touchdowns. Grant Haley earned his playing-time through his tackling skills, which are a questionable trait to prioritize when he struggles mightily in coverage.

Haley has only allowed one touchdown, but giving up 28 receptions on 34 targets is too easy for quarterbacks. That’s over 80% of passes completed in his coverage. While Jenkins and Baker have struggled, Baker is allowing a 69% completion rate, and Jenkins’ currently stands at 54%. It’s hard to say this team has a single reliable option at cornerback going into the offseason.

4. Inside Linebacker

When the best linebacker on the team is a 5th round rookie who was expected to be a special teams contributor, there are serious problems. Alec Ogletree is the best available linebacker with Ryan Connelly injured, but he still isn’t finding his groove in New York. Once considered an athletic and rangy linebacker, he continues to get roasted in pass defense, and he is inconsistent against the run. The team sent BJ Goodson packing, apparently preferring guys off the street like David Mayo or James Bettcher’s former inside linebacker from Arizona, Deone Bucannon. In 4 out of 7 games without Ryan Connelly in the lineup, a member of the secondary has led the team in tackles. This unit needs two new starters going into 2020, planning for Connelly to be one of them on opening day wouldn’t be smart. Connelly’s ACL recovery could last into October or November.

5. Right Pass-Rusher

With Lorenzo Carter experiencing highs and lows as a pass rusher, he’s not a defender the team should rely on going forward. One week he’s forcing Tyron Smith to hold him, and the next week, he’s getting handled by Chuma Edoga, a rookie left tackle who was questioned for his work ethic entering the draft. He currently has 2.5 sacks and a forced fumble but disappears in too many games to rely on him. Oshane Ximines is ahead of him in terms of technique, and both are talented enough to be on the 53 man roster, but this team needs a new starter on the edge. Neither has shown any ability in run defense.

6. Center

Last year the team signed Spencer Pulley to a three-year-deal and praised Jon Halapio as a starting-caliber center. Unfortunately, the team has received little impact from either player heading into their week 11 bye. It’s fair to ask if Saquon Barkley has been operating at 100% since returning, but he’s getting absolutely no push up front to work with. With Kevin Zeitler and Will Hernandez being the team’s best linemen, the issues in the middle have come from Jon Halapio and Spencer Pulley. Usually, quarterbacks see pressure coming up the middle, but Daniel Jones’ reckless abandon for his body and health brings a very high standard for offensive line play.

7. Left Pass-Rusher

There’s nearly just as much of a need for pass-rushing help on the left side, but Markus Golden has been a bright spot. He hasn’t made an impact in each game, but 6.5 sacks are enough of an effect through 10 weeks to return as a rotational piece in 2020. Markus Golden might not be a preferred starter, but he is serviceable. His contract was only a 1-year deal if he plays elsewhere in 2020, the team would be in serious trouble at both edge spots. With no depth behind Golden, to begin with, a left pass-rusher is a need regardless of where Golden plays in 2020.

8. Free Safety

Jabrill Peppers has been a pleasant surprise at the safety position, but he’s more like a rangier Landon Collins than a center-field ballhawk. He almost exclusively lines up in the box, leaving a significant need for a conventional free safety going forward. For the time being, Antoine Bethea is offering what he has left in the tank paired with Jabrill Peppers, but he doesn’t have much to offer. Michael Thomas is an adequate option on the backend of a roster but not someone who should be penciled in as a starter.

9. Wide Receiver

Golden Tate has proven to be an adequate pass-catching option, but the team has little depth behind him. Sterling Shepard is arguably the best wide receiver the New York Giants have but could be considering retirement after the 2nd concussion in 2019. Darius Slayton is currently the #2 wide receiver and just torched the Jets for over 120 yards and two touchdowns, but he’s shown typical rookie ups and downs. Behind Slayton, the team has Cody Latimer and Bennie Fowler, who are replacement-level wide receivers.

Any receiver on this roster has definite limitations. Golden Tate and Sterling Shepard are primarily slot receivers with limited explosiveness on the perimeter. Darius Slayton has shown some ability underneath but is best used down the field. Adding a ”do it all” wide receiver would greatly help Daniel Jones. As it stands, the Giants wide receivers are among the leagues worst in terms of separation.

10. Kicker

Aldrick Rosas had a promising start to his career, but he’s missed three extra points in the last three weeks. He might be granted a longer leash in a lost season to prove it’s just a slump. However, signing a proven veteran with a large body of work would be the safe option for the 2020 season.

Why wasn’t a Pass-Rusher at the top of the list?

While there’s no denying this team needs an edge rusher badly, that hasn’t been the most considerable concern. Currently, the team doesn’t have a single adequate option at inside linebacker or cornerback, depending on how you feel about the roller-coaster ride of Janoris Jenkins.

The New York Giants also need to worry about keeping Daniel Jones up-right and protecting the football. This will require much better offensive tackles than what’s currently available to the young quarterback. His development is what’s most important right now. Nate Solder and Mike Remmers haven’t been very helpful so far.

New York Giants Defense Can’t Wait To Get At Kyler Murray

October 19, 2019 by Cay North
New York Jets, Markus Golden

Sunday’s game between the New York Giants and the Arizona Cardinals will have big effects for both teams, with the Giants in particular having a chance to move back to one game behind .500 or to fall three games back from even instead. There’s going to be a lot of factors going into the result, including the performance of both quarterbacks and the injuries for the Giants and how well the team can manage to perform without a full roster of weapons on offense, but there’s one factor in specific that stands out.

That factor is top draft pick Kyler Murray, who like Daniel Jones, has found himself playing as a starter during his rookie year. Despite the two players being taken close together in the draft and playing the same position, though, Murray is a very different type of player from Jones – and most quarterbacks for that matter, which only adds to the threat that he poses to opposing defenses.

Russell Wilson has been one of the top quarterbacks in the league this season, and in the buildup to the game, defensive coordinator James Bettcher made a direct comparison to the Seahawks quarterback.

“I have spent 10 games playing against Russell Wilson in Seattle, so I have seen some guys like this that can buy time with their feet who are accurate and can deliver the ball on time and on schedule, then create some off-schedule plays. They’ve created a good amount of explosives in the pass game off of that,” Bettcher said, speaking of Murray.

And the comparison is one that has spread to more than just Bettcher. Outside linebacker Markus Golden also made the comparison, and even said that Murray is better in one area.

“[Murray] reminds me a little bit of Russell Wilson, but he’s probably a little quicker. He’s pretty quick. He’s like a running back back there playing quarterback, so you’re going to have to keep an eye on him and you’re going to have to have a game plan to be able to get after him. Everybody is going to have to work together because he’s a solid player,” Golden stated.

Murray has seven touchdowns to this point, compared to five touchdowns and six interceptions to this point from Jones, although Murray has an inherent advantage in having played more games. What will the two quarterbacks look like statistically after Sunday’s game? That remains to be seen – but the battle between the two might just decide the game entirely.

New York Giants news, 10/18 – Best free agent signing, Saquon Barkley injury update

October 18, 2019 by Alexander Wilson
New York Giants, Markus Golden

Good Morning, New York Giants Fans!

Nobody expected former Arizona Cardinal and current New York Giants outside linebacker, Markus Golden, would shine in his comeback season after a significant injury stunted his progression.

At just 28-years-old, Golden is finally coming into his own, and once again, it’s with defensive coordinator James Bettcher calling the plays. The defender has racked up an impressive 5.0 sacks this season, already ranking second in his career — the most coming in 2016, his second season in the NFL, under Bettcher (12.5).

He has been stellar for Big Blue this season, making him the most influential free agent signing this season. I cannot imagine general manager Dave Gettleman will not look to extend him towards the end of the season if he can remain healthy and productive. In a high-priced pass-rush market, grabbing a guy like Golden is a rarity. Counting just $3.75 million against the cap this season, his price-tag could jump up to $8-9 million next year, but it would be 100% worth the investment.

Markus is currently tied for eighth in the league with 5.0 sacks, and he will have a favorable matchup against the Cardinals this Sunday. He’s playing for future money, so expect him to continue domination at the line of scrimmage.

Saquon Barkley injury timetable:

Barkley has been going through individual drills for quite some time now, but risking the star running back was not worth the consequences. Barkley stated on Thursday that there was “no doubt” his ankle would hold up in line-action.

The New York Giants’ 2nd overall pick from 2018 suffered a high ankle sprain in week three against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, meaning rookie quarterback Daniel Jones has been without his most valuable asset on offense. Despite losing Barkley, Jones averaged over 30 points in his first two starts. Gaining back the playmaker will only benefit the offensive productivity and, hopefully, give them the edge against Arizona.

New York Giants: Markus Golden is Unstoppable

October 13, 2019 by Brittany Sirabella
Can Markus Golden be a great player for the New York Giants?

Time after time again New York Giants outside linebacker Markus Golden has made fantastic plays!  Again Markus proves to be Golden!

In last night’s prime time game against the undefeated New England Patriots, the New York Giants defense was full of fire.  Despite a loss, this is not indicative of how the defense played-with certain players, in particular, doing a rather good job!

In yesterday’s game, Golden fought hard against the New England Patriots offense, getting a sack on quarterback Tom Brady and 3 tackles and a fumble recovery which resulted in a touchdown for a total of 42 yards.  Golden showed off his veteran prowess, reaching for the end-zone.  Golden has accumulated five sacks this season in six games.

Golden deserves more recognition and credit than he gets.  He is a truly powerful entity on this defense and after every great play he has, he motivates the other players on this secondary and the fans as well.

Golden is well versed when it comes to the game of football both physically and mentally.  He is aware and knows how to be a pivotal contributor to the defense and the New York Giants team itself.  He is persistent and tough and never lets his endurance wane, no matter what the score or circumstances may be.

Golden is a true gift for the New York Giants as his resilience and tenacity make him a true contender!  He made both his family, teammates, and fans proud yesterday!  We all are grateful and lucky to have him!  He makes us proud to be Giants fans!

New York Giants: Markus Golden Exceeding All Expectations

October 12, 2019 by Anthony Rivardo
New York Jets, Markus Golden

The New York Giants lost to the New England Patriots this week. The Giants lost 35-14, indicating a blowout loss, but that is not what the game truly was

In fact, the Giants’ defense played an exceptional game through the first three quarters. Things fell apart in the fourth, but there is a lot to build on from the Giants’ week six performance.

In particular, the Giants’ pass-rush looked solid. Lorenzo Carter had what could be a breakout game and Markus Golden continued his underrated and excellent play. Markus Golden has been one of the best players on the Giants’ defense this year, and not many people seem to realize just how good he has been.

Markus Golden’s Underrated Season

He has flown under the radar, but Markus Golden has been performing at a very high level this season. Golden leads the Giants in sacks and is proving to be one of their best players on a struggling defense.

Through the Giants’ first six games of the season, Markus Golden has totaled 5 sacks and 11 quarterback hits. He is generating pressure at a very high rate and making an impact for the Giants like very few other defenders. Golden has also recorded 22 combined tackles and even scored a touchdown on a 42 yard fumble recovery and return.

One of Markus Golden’s best games of the season was this week against New England. The Tweet below details his stats and shows his extraordinary touchdown.

A Great Value Contract

The Giants signed Markus Golden this offseason. Golden was coming off of a significant knee injury, so he did not garner too much attention on the open market, luckily for the Giants. Additionally, the Giants had a familiar connection to Markus Golden, giving him even more reason to bring his talents to the Big Apple.

Markus Golden is a former Arizona Cardinal. So is the Giants’ current defensive coordinator James Bettcher. Golden’s familiarity with Bettcher’s scheme made him a good fit for the team’s defense and a must-have in free agency.

Since he was coming off of an injury, the Giants gave Markus a one-year “prove-it” deal worth $3,750,000. For a player who has totaled 5 sacks in 6 games, this is incredible value. Markus Golden has exceeded all expectation and could be a player the Giants resign and keep around for the long run.

New York Giants: 3 Giant positives from the loss to the Patriots

October 11, 2019 by Alexander Wilson
New York Giants, Daniel Jones, Jon Hilliman

The New York Giants might have fallen to the New England Patriots 35-14, but they put up a resilient fight that proved they’re capable of hanging with the best.

The NFL’s best team and top-rated defense had fits with Big Blue all night, especially their defense, who returned a fumble recovery for a touchdown and dominated in the trenches all game. Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough to secure the win as star running back Saquon Barkley, and a slew of influential players were forced out due to injury.

Here are three positives from the New York Giants loss to the Patriots:

1.) The defense showed they can fight

Typically, allowing 35 points is nothing to write home about, but the Giants defense stepped up in a big way in Foxboro.

The pass rush was dominant, and outside linebackers, Markus Golden and Lorenzo Carter, both made colossal impact plays to keep the Giants alive late in the game. Golden returned a fumble for a touchdown, and Lorenzo Carter was in the backfield, frequently putting pressure on Tom Brady.

Also, interior defenders Dexter Lawrence, BJ Hill, and Dalvin Tomlinson all wreaked havoc on the Patriots offensive line and forced Brady to get rid of the ball quickly. Before a late-game scamper by Sony Michel, the Patriots hovered around the 50 rushing yard mark, an impressive number for a defense who was without starting linebacker Ryan Connelly.

The resiliency showed by the unit proved they could be a quality defense moving forward. They have the puzzle pieces and are finally coming together with improved chemistry. Some weak spots need to be addressed next off-season, but they are beginning to understand James Bettcher’s scheme and take advantage of what his style can provide.

2.) Darius Slayton is the real deal

The New York Giants might have found themselves a quality wide receiver in late-round pick, Darius Slayton. The rookie was lined up across from Stephon all game, the league’s top cornerback. He finished the night with three receptions for 32 yards, but a majority of his catches came on third downs. He seems to be Rueben Randle on steroids, a player that can contest the balls and act as a trustworthy target for Daniel Jones.

Slayton has 179-yards over 12 receptions and one score this season. He has elevated his game lately, securing a majority of those numbers in the last two contests. We should keep an eye on his development and improvement as the season progresses.

3.) The reality of Saquon Barkley is REAL

If there is anything we learned from Thursday night’s loss to the New England Patriots, it is that running back Saquon Barkley is extremely important to the functionality of the Giants offense. On the night, Jon Hilliman ran for 38 yards on 11 carries. He also fumbled the ball towards the end of the game that put the Giants to bed. Barkley’s shiftiness an ability to break off big runs makes him a constant threat for opposing defenses.

His influence forces opposing defensive coordinators to take players out of coverage, which ultimately helps open up the field for quarterbacks. Gaining back Barkley soon will be a huge boost and support the Giants succeed down the road. However, we now know they can battle against the best teams, but they certainly need their best players to do so.

New York Giants hanging on by a thread, can they make a surprise comeback?

October 10, 2019 by Alexander Wilson
New York Giants, Golden Tate

The New York Giants entered half time against the New England Patriots with one of their better defensive performances in tow. On a windy night in Foxborough Massachusetts, rookie passer Daniel Jones threw two interceptions to give the Patriots the ball and ultimately a 14-0 lead (special teams score included).

However, he didn’t back down as he connected with new free-agent signing Golden Tate on a 64-yard touchdown pass they gave the Giants their first score of the game and the first touchdown through the air against the Patriots defense this season.

There is hope the Giants can stick around in the second half, and a Markus Golden fumble recovery for a touchdown proved that they could compete with the league’s best team.

STAY GOLDEN, MARKUS 🔥

— Giants Videos (@SNYGiants) October 11, 2019

The New York Giants are competing with minimal talent on offense:

With practice squad running back Jon Hilliman earning just 22 yards on seven carries, the Giants defense has been the highlight of the first half and will be a catalyst for success in a second.

Daniel Jones must be more efficient with the football in his hands and utilize his receivers more frequently. On the defensive side, Jabrill Peppers leads the team with five total tackles, and Golden is sitting with 0.5 sacks and two assists to go along with his fumble recovery for a score.

One of the underrated defenders for the game, though, is linebacker David Mayo, who has earned four tackles, three assists, and 0.5 sacks. He has been stellar stopping the run and clogging up the middle of the field so far.

At the very end of the first half, the Giants allowed a rushing touchdown, which gave the patriots a 21-14 lead. With Big Blue getting the ball back in the second half, they need to start with momentum and positive gains. The defense must continue to play with aggressiveness and physicality as well.

What do the Giants need to compete in the second half?

Aside from another half of quality defensive play, the Giants need the running game to establish itself and burn time off the clock. Having the wind at Jones’ back is essential and will be a huge factor in the team passing the ball with efficiency.

New York Giants: Markus Golden is truly Golden

September 24, 2019 by Brittany Sirabella
Can Markus Golden be a great player for the New York Giants?

There has been a lot of talk surrounding the New York Giants defense.  Sure, there can always be room for improvement, but yesterday’s game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers proved that there are signs of hope and potential for this defense.  One positive aspect of the Giants defense showed itself in the form of outside linebacker Markus Golden.

Golden has shown that he is a competitor in the past, but in yesterdays game he truly proved it.  Golden had two sacks and five tackles against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.  This motivated the team and really gave them the confidence that they could pull off a win.

Golden played four seasons with the Arizona Cardinals and proved to be an asset on their defense.  He brought his ferocity and drive with him to the New York Giants as he showed yesterday.  Golden gave the defense some morale.

With his vigor and his heart and fighting spirit, Golden is sure to only get better and better each and every game.

Golden has proved to be a star on the field, but what sets him apart from the rest is his giving demeanor and persona.  Each year since the start of his professional football career, Golden holds a free youth football camp in his hometown of St. Louis Missouri.  Here, he sets kids up with the values and skills they need for both on and off the field.

Golden is thankful, gracious and appreciative of every opportunity life throws at him and it shows.  He is a hidden star and has provided the defense with a glimmer of hope.  All that glitters is (Markus) Gold(en)!

New York Giants: Dexter Lawrence continues to show improvement

September 22, 2019 by Alexander Wilson
New York Giants defensive lineman, Dexter Lawrence.

New York Giants rookie defensive lineman Dexter Lawrence isn’t versed in losing consistently, considering his track record with Clemson and National Championship victory in 2018.

Lawrence knows how to win, but he, unfortunately, cannot play every position by himself. Elevating his teammates’ play and continuing to improve is the only way to help the efficiency of the defense moving forward.

“I mean I have lost before,” said Lawrence. “It’s just not to keep letting it happen. It has to stop somewhere. It just takes everybody believing, the whole team in all three phases, special teams, offense and defense, believing that we can win and believing in each other. Getting a team morale and just going out there and playing football.”

Finishing his Clemson career with a 41-3 record, he has almost matched his loss total in two games as a professional athlete. However, the deficiencies on the team don’t land on him but rather the secondary and pass rush. Lawrence has done his job quite well — drawing double teams and wreaking havoc in the trenches.

The New York Giants need to see more from Dexter Lawrence:

Despite earning just two solo tackles and three assists, Dexter’s influence has been present. The pass-rush has been the process, and while the Giants expected the massive defensive tackle to help in that facet, there’s only so much he can do in year one.

Last week, cornerback Janoris Jenkins threw the pass-rush under the bus, stating that he cannot cover receivers for 10-seconds and he needs more support. Players like Markus Golden, Oshane Ximines, and Lorenzo Carter need to answer the call. Not that the secondary hasn’t been the catalyst for failure, but every unit on the defense needs to improve…quickly.

The entire defensive line has been sluggish, and Dexter knows how prepared he is to take on NFL-level opponents, it just boils down to him executing on his expectations.

“I don’t know,” he said. “I think I’m pretty prepared just from what I’ve been going against in practice in the offseason. Those guys got me ready for the regular season. I feel like it’s just me going out there and just proving it and showing it.”

Losing 28-14 to the Buffalo Bills exposed even more weaknesses on the Giants’ defense. Miscommunications, lack of effort, youth, were all present against a far lesser opponent comparable to the Dallas Cowboys. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers offer a weaker opponent on Sunday, which should give players like Dexter Lawrence the opportunity prove their worth.
