New York Yankees: 5 Takeaways from Yankee doubleheader sweep of the Red Sox

New York Yankees, Giancarlo Stanton

The New York Yankees entered yesterday’s pivotal doubleheader with the Boston Red Sox with the ability to overtake the Red Sox in the AL East for the first time this season. They won both games for a sweep of the doubleheader. As a result, they took the Red Sox berth in the playoffs and are now even being 5 games behind the AL East-leading Tampa Bay Rays.

Luis Gil does it again and makes history

Luis Gil wasn’t as sharp last night as he was in his first two replacement starts for Gerrit Cole, who was previously on the Covid list. But he did pitch 4.2 innings of scoreless ball. He became the first pitcher ever in New York Yankee history to pitch 4.2 scoreless innings in each of his first three career appearances since 1893. Also, his 15.2 scoreless inning streak is now the second-longest by a Yankee pitcher in franchise history, trailing only Slow Joe Doyle back in 1906.

Gil originally called up as an emergency replacement, has made a strong case to stick around, even with the returning starters coming back into the rotation. His unflappability and swagger endears himself with Yankee fans.

Game one starter Jordan Montgomery one of those starters returning from Covid, tired during his first start. He gave up three runs but kept the Yankees in the game so they could eventually win.

The home run is king

The New York Yankees have positioned themselves as a home run hitting team. Most often, if they don’t hit home runs, they don’t win. Last night the home run ball was king as all of the runs scored were via the home run. In the second inning last night Luke Voit hit a homer to the right-field bench. Giancarlo Stanton led off the bottom by homering well (441′) into the left-field stands in the fourth inning. Those two runs were the only runs scored by either team in the game.

The first game was an unusual one that saw the Yankees claw their way to a win without hitting any home runs. Instead, they pulled off the seven-inning win with a combination of stringing hits together and running the bases well. Rougie Odor, Tyler Wade, and Andrew Velazquez went five for seven. Velazquez sparkled in the field, keeping the Sox from scoring.

The bullpen is dominant in shut out

Last night after Gil’s third successful start Wandy Peralta game in in the fifth inning with the bases loaded with Red Sox and successfully got out of the inning scoreless. Peralta also pitched a scoreless sixth. Chad Green came in in the seventh and pitched a hitless inning for his fifth save of the season.

Montgomery went 4.2 innings in game one, and Albert Abreu came in to get the final out of the fifth inning. Then entered Jonathan Loaisiga, who pitched two scoreless innings and got his fifth save of the season.

Yankees win without a closer

The New York Yankees are winning games and winning them without a permanent, dependable closer. Aroldis Chapman, with 23 saves this season, has been anything but dependable. He started the season lights out, not giving up a run in his first 18 games, but then things went south. He had four blown saves, and in most of the games the Yankees did win, Chapman turned the ninth inning into a nail-biting soap opera.

Chapman is now on the IL left shoulder inflammation. Even before Chapman went on, the IL manager Aaron Boone was pitching and choosing closer matchups. Most were with Zack Britton, but Britton has been ineffective and removed from a closing role. So since July fourth, Boone has used seven different closers. Chad Green and Jonathan Loaisiga have been the most effective.

New York Yankees go for the sweep tonight

After sweeping the doubleheader yesterday, tonight, the Yankees will go for the series sweep of the Boston Red Sox. The Yankees will have Andrew Heaney on the mound, and the Red Sox will start Nick Pivetta. Heaney, although he has a respectable 7 wins on the season since he has come to the Yankees, he has given up 15 runs in three starts, with the Yankees losing two of those starts. Xander Bogaerts has been a Heaney killer. Heaney will be on a short leash.

Heaney will the Red Sox’s Nick Pivetta, who is a rightly who is 9-5 with a 4.20 ERA and 139 strikeouts. Both DJ LeMahieu and Giancarlo Stanton have hit weel off of Pivetta. Stanton and Sanchez have hit homers off him. The game at 7:05 pm tonight will be on the YES Network, NESN, and nationally on ESPN.

New York Yankees Recap: Yankees make a statement in shut out of the Boston Red Sox

luis gil, yankees

Today the New York Yankees entered a three-game set with the Boston Red Sox, starting with a day-night doubleheader. The Yankees won the day game 5-3 in an exciting ninth inning. This could be a pivotal series with the Yankees overtaking the Red Sox in the wild card standing if the Yankees can sweep the series.

Winning the first game was the first step to accomplish that. Tonight was game two of that series when the Yankee sensation prospect Luis Gil took on the veteran Red Sox pitcher Nathan Eovaldi. Eovaldi has faced the Yankees four times this season, winning 50% of those games. The Yankees shut out the Red Sox in game two.

In the first inning, Gil faced Kiki Hernandez, who flew out to Stanton in right field. Alex Verdugo walked. Xander Bogaerts flew out to Gardner in center. Rafael Devers flew out to Gallo in left. At the bottom, DJ LeMahieu led off with a single to center. Brett Gardner reached on a force out. Aaron Judge stuck out, but Gardner stole second. Joey Gallo flew out to center for a scoreless inning.

The second inning was lead off by JT Martinez went up the middle for a base hit. Kyle Schwarber walked. Kevin Palwecki, with two on and no outs, went down looking. Jerren Duran struck out swinging. Travis Shaw struck out swinging to end the half for Gil. At the bottom, Giancarlo Stanton struck out. Rougie Odor struck out. Luke Voit hit a homer to the right-field bench. Tyler Wade struck out, but the Yankees went ahead in the game. New York Yankees 1, the Red Sox 0.

Kiki Hernandez led off the third by popping out to Voit in right-field foul territory. Alex Verdugo walked. A passed ball allowed Verdugo to got to second. Bogaerts ground out, but Verdugo went to third. Devers flew out to Gardner to end the half. Kyle Higashioka led off the bottom by lining a single to left field. LeMahieu singled to right, with Higgy moving to second. Gardner popped out to short. Judge flew out to the warning track in center with Higgy going to third. Gallo went down swinging. Yankees 1 Red Sox 0.

At the fourth, Martinez flew out to Stanton in right-center. Schwarber hit a sky-high pop up to Odor. Palwecki popped out to Voit for a 1-2-3 inning for Gil. Stanton led off the bottom by homering well (441′) into the left-field stands. Odor doubled to left field. Voit with a man on second and no outs went down on strikes. Wade ground out to left. Higashioka walked. LeMahieu popped out to end the inning. Yankees 2 Red Sox 0.

Duran led off the fifth and singled to right. Shaw struck out. Hernandez singled on a ball that Wade missed. Duran went to third. Verdugo flew out to Gallo, not challenging Gallo’s arm; Duran stayed at third. Bogaerts walked, loading the bases ending the night for Gil. Wandy Peralta came in to face Devers, who ground to second for the final out and left the bases loaded with Red Sox. At the bottom, Gardner ground out to second. Judge singled to right. Judge stole second standing. Gallo went down on strikes. Stanton flew out to center to end the inning. Yankees 2 Red Sox 0.

JT Martinez led off the sixth inning by flying out to Stanton in right. Schwarber singled. Palwecki hit into a force out. Hunter Renfroe pinch-hitting for Duran singled to left center, Gardner’s throw kept Schwarber from scoring. Bobby Dalbec pinch-hit Shaw and lined back to Peralta; the ball was knocked down, but Peralta bare-handed it to first for the final out. At the bottom, Odor against the new pitcher, Martin Perez, ground out to right. Voit went down looking. Wade singled, knocking Perez out of the game. Higashioka faced the new Sox pitcher Sawamura and flew out to right. New York Yankees 2 Red Sox 0.

At the top of the ninth inning, Chad Green came into the game to close it out for the Yankees. Hernandez flew out to LeMahieu in foul territory. Verdugo struck out on 97 mph heat from Green. Bogaerts ground out to get the win for the Yankees and let them go ahead of the Sox in the wild card standings.

The final score was the New York Yankees 2 and the Boston Red Sox Zero. The winning pitcher was Wandy Peralta, the loser Nathan Eovaldi. The save went to Chad Green (5).

New York Yankees: Two teams, four games, here’s the preview

Gerrit Cole, New York Yankees

Today was supposed to be a much-needed day off for the New York Yankees, but today they will play a makeup game with the Los Angeles Angels. The game was made necessary due to a rainout when they last met in June at the Stadium. Tomorrow the Yankees will start a three-game series with the Boston Red Sox. The Angels are 12 1/2 out in the AL West, and the Yankees are 5.5 games out in the AL East; every game is important, but if the Yankees can sweep the Red Sox, they will take over second place in the East division.

Tonight, August 16, 7:05 pm:

Tonight, at Yankee Stadium, we will see the return off the Covid list of Yankee ace Gerrit Cole. Cole had not pitched since July 29th, when he lost to the Tampa Bay Rays. While on the Covid list, although he hasn’t pitched, he could throw the ball at home during his time away. This season he is 10-6  with a 3.11 ERA and an incredible 176 strikeouts. The Yankees hope Cole will return to form in tonight’s game.

Cole will be facing the Angels Jose Suarez, a lefty that is 5-5 with a 3.90 ERA for the Angels in 15 games. He is coming off a loss on the 10th against the Toronto Blue Jays. Suarez typically gives up a lot of run and home runs as well. The Angels have lost 8 of his starts. DJ LeMahieu and Giancarlo Stanton have hit well off Suarez.

Tuesday, August 17, 1:05 pm., game one:

On Tuesday, the first game of a day-night doubleheader will feature pitching sensation prospect Luis Gil on the mound for the Yankees. The righty is 1-0 with a Zero ERA and 14 strikeouts in two starts against the Orioles and Mariners. Gil has been the replacement for Gerrit Cole while he was on the Covid list. He has given the Yankees more than they could have asked for and now earns another start.

The Red Sox has not announced a starter for the game. The game will be televised on the YES Network, NESN, and MLBN out of market.

Tuesday, August 17, 7:05 pm., game two:

The night installment of the doubleheader will see the return of Jordan Montgomery from the Covid list. The lefty is 4-5 with an ERA of 3.69 and 115 strikeouts. “Monty” pitches much better than the record would suggest. He has gotten very little run support in most of his games. The Yankees hope the rest will allow Montgomery to have a good start tomorrow night. He is coming off of two wins, one against the Rays and one against the Marlins.

The Red Sox have not announced a starter for this game either. The game will be televised by WPIX and its affiliates in the New York area, NESN, and MLBN out of market.

Wednesday, August 18, 7:05 pm:

In this game, the tables are turned on the Red Sox as they have announced their starter, but the Yankees haven’t. This is largely because the Yankees don’t have a reliable starter for the game. It would normally be Andrew Heaney’s start, but that will likely not be the case with how poorly he has pitched. So instead, it could end up being a bullpen game started by either Lucas Luetge or Wandy Peralta. For both, it would be their second start.

The Red Sox will start Nick Pivetta, one of their best starters. He is a righty with a 9-5 record, an ERA of 4.20, and 139 strikeouts. He is coming off a six-inning outing win against the Baltimore Orioles. The Yankees have not faced Pivetta this season. DJ LeMahieu and Giancarlo Stanton have both hit well off of Pivetta in the past. Wednesday night’s game will be nationally televised on ESPN. It will also be on the YES Network and NESN.

New York Yankees: 3 major takeaways from Sunday’s play

New York Yankees, Gleyber Torres

After winning the first three games of a four-game set, the New York Yankees went into yesterday’s game hoping for the sweep. Unfortunately, it was not to be had as the Mariners pitchers limited the Yankee hitter to just six insignificant hits as they remained scoreless in the game. The final score was the Mariners 2, Yankees 0. With yesterday’s win by the Rays over the Orioles and the Yankees loss, they are now 6.5 games behind those Rays in the AL East.

Gil continues as Yankees best pitcher

Luis Gil is a young man who has dreamed of being a major league pitcher. But, due to the Yankee’s shortage of starting pitchers, because of injury and Covid and his own pitching prowess in the minor leagues, last week, he got his chance. Last week in his major league debut, he pitched six scoreless innings. Then, in yesterday’s matinee against the Seattle Mariners, he got his second start.

Although not as sharp as in his first start, he matched the Mariners Yusei Kikuchi with five scoreless innings. In fact, he was better than Kukuchi with fewer hits and more strikeouts. He went five giving up two hits while striking out eight Mariners.  In his first two games, he has pitched 11 scoreless innings making him the best Yankees pitcher over the span. In the process, he became the Yankee’s first pitcher to do that since “Slow Joe” (Judd Bruce Doyle) in 1947.

Yankees struggle with men on base

Even though the New York Yankees have played good baseball during the last few weeks, one remainder of the first has continued to raise its ugly head. The Yankees are leaving men stranded, denying them of scoring more runs. In yesterday’s shutout by the Mariners, the Yankees went 0 for 11 with men in scoring position.

Only Gleyber Torres got an extra-base hit, a double. Torres also stole his12th base of the season; he also went 3 for 4, being the Yankee’s best player of the day. Other less desirable stats include Aaron Judge, the returning Luke Voit, and Kyle Higashioka, all going 0 for 4.

If there is a single reason the Yankees don’t get a postseason berth, it will be that they don’t lift the ball out of the infield. This causes them to lead baseball hitting into the most double plays. It also causes them to hit the second-fewest extra-base hits.

Severino is perfect in rehab start

It’s no secret that the Yankees have been playing great ball, even missing several key players and pitchers. But help is on the way. General Manager Brian Cashman stated that Corey Kluber and Luis Severino would be back into the fold sometime between August 20 and September 1st.

Yesterday with the Somerset Patriots, Luis Severino came one step closer to that return. On Sunday evening, he pitched four flawless frames for the Double-A Somerset Patriots, retiring all 12 batters he faced in order. As a result, the game ended up a no-hitter for the Patriots. However, a walk in the ninth inning prevented it from being a perfect game. Nevertheless, it was the first no-hitter in the Patriot’s history. Severino threw 48 pitches in four innings for the combined no-hitter.

New York Yankees: Luis Gil’s glow brightens, but the Yankees fail the sweep of the Mariners

yankees, luis gil

The New York Yankees entered today’s game hoping for the sweep of the Seattle Mariners after winning the first three. Sweeps of a four-game series are really difficult, especially when you are short as many players as the Yankees. The Yankees announced they had placed Anthony Rizzo on the Covid list before the game, their twelfth player to go on the list. They activated Luke Voit. At the end of a frustrating day, the Yankees could not complete the sweep losing the fourth game 2-0.

Today Luis Gil got his second start since being brought up from the RailRiders. In his first start, he was masterful, going six innings of scoreless ball. He is 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA. However, no Mariner has seen him pitch except via video.

Gil faced Yusei Kikuchi, who was an All-Star this year. The lefty is 7-6 with an ERA of 3.89 and an impressive 129 strikeouts. The Yankees got 5 runs off him in their first meeting this season in just two innings.

Through seven innings of the game, nothing really happed as the game remained scoreless. Gil went five scoreless innings striking out eight Mariners. He brightened his already bright glow going eleven straight innings without allowing a run. He became the Yankee’s first pitcher to do that since “Slow Joe” (Judd Bruce Doyle) in 1947.

Wandy Peralta came in to replace Gil and allowed just one hit. Stephen Ridings struck out all three batters he faced in the seventh. The New York Yankees were again scoreless in the bottom of the seventh. Gleyber Torres was having a great game going three for three.

Going into the eighth inning, both teams were scoreless. At the top of the inning, it was back to the top of the lineup for the Mariners. Abe Toro faced the Yankee’s fourth pitcher Lucas Luetge and reached on a booted ball by Odor. Mitch Haniger walked.   With two on and no outs, Kyle Seager got a ground-rule double scoring Toro for the first run of the game. Ty France struck out. Jarred Kelenic went down looking. Kelenic argued the call and was thrown out, as was manager Scot Servais. Cal Raleigh got a two-run single to make it 3-0. the call at home plate was overturned, and the Mariners only picked up two runs. Seattle Mariners 2 Yankees 0.

Luke Voit led off and ground out in the bottom of the eighth inning, with the Yankees behind 2 runs. Then, Gleyber Torres went down looking. Then, Rougie Odor flew out to right, and it was off to the ninth inning.

At the top of the night, Jake Fraley struck out against Albert Abreu in for the final inning. Dylan Moore flew out to Gardner in center. Jake Bauers walked. Toro walked. Haniger struck out swinging. With last licks on the line for the Yankees in the bottom, Kyle Higashioka ground out to third. Brett Gardner reached on a ball back to the pitcher. DJ LeMahieu ground out to short, with Gardner advancing to second. Aaron Judge went down looking in a failed attempt to sweep the Mariners.

The final score was the Seattle Mariners 2 and the New York Yankees 0. The two runs scored by the Mariners were unearned. The winning pitcher was Sewald, the loser was Lucas Luetge, and the save went to Steckenrider.

Yankees’ young starting pitcher eyeing second big outing, but what does his future look like?

yankees, luis gil

When the New York Yankees pulled up at Luis Gil to face off against the Baltimore Orioles, nobody expected he would blank them over 6.0 innings. Tossing 88 pitches, Gil allowed four hits and struck out six batters in his MLB debut.

The Yankees scored 13 runs in his first outing, as Gill replaced All-Star Gerrit Cole, who was put on the COVID-19 injured list last week. At 23 years old, Gil has featured prominently in the minor-league system, making eight appearances for Triple-A Scranton.

During his time at Triple-A, Gil posted a 5.64 ERA, earning an 11.27 strike-out rate per nine. In his first professional outing, his fastball averaged 95.8 MPH, curating a 37.5% ground ball rate and nine strikeouts per nine.

The Yankees are preparing to take on the Seattle Mariners in the final game of a four-game series at 1:05 PM on Sunday afternoon. Gil will once again feature as the team’s primary starter, as his opposition hosts Yusei Kikuchi on the mound.

If Luis can string together another positive performance, he could find himself in the mix at the back end of the rotation. The Yankees are expecting both Luis Severino and Corey Kluber to make a return toward the end of August, potentially early September. While I can’t imagine the team featuring Gil during a post-season game, they should continue to utilize him sparingly to help mitigate fatigue as the end of the regular season nears.

The Yankees are currently on a five-game winning streak, having emerged victorious in eight of their last nine games. In the AL East standings, the Bombers are 5.5 games back from the Tampa Bay Rays and 1.5 games back from the Oakland Athletics in the Wild Card race.

Fortunately, Boston has lost eight of their last 10 games but squeaked out a victory against Toronto on Saturday. Tampa, on the other hand, has won seven of their last nine, with two wins over the Orioles. It will be difficult to catch up to Tampa, meaning the Wild Card presents a better opportunity for the Yankees to earn a playoff spot.

New York Yankee Player Profiles: Luis Gil, what will his future be?

yankees, luis gil

All of the recent New York Yankees Covid encounters have caused the Yankees to do things they might not have done otherwise. Bringing up Luis Gil early was one of those moves.

“It was needed,” Boone said. “We’re expecting Gerrit Cole to be going tonight, and that’s tough news to get when your ace goes down, and you’re wondering how — forget replace him — but how you’re going to cover those innings.”

After weighing the possibilities, the Yankees chose to bring up prospect Luis Gil (pronounced Heel) from Scranton Wilkes/Barre. Many would have thought that the Yankees would bring back up last season’s debuting starter Deivi Garcia, but Garcia is pitching poorly at Scranton, whereas Luis Gil has been making a name for himself.

Gil did not disappoint. In the first inning, Gil took the mound in his debut and flew out Cedric Mullins. Ramon Urias struck out. Ryan Mountcastle reached on a collision with Rizzo. Anthony Santander flew out to Judge in right to end the half and a good first inning for Gil.

At the second, Anthony Santander led off against Gil, and he flew out to center. Austin Hays flew out to Torres. Pedro Severino went down looking as Gil had a 1-2-3 inning. By the end of his sixth innings of work, he had given up 4 hits, walking one and recording 6 strikeouts in his first win as a major league pitcher.

Gil was acquired from the Twins for Jake Cave in March 2018. In his third year with the New York Yankees, he has become an up-and-coming pitcher of the young arms in the Yankee organization. Fangraphs rates him twelfth in the organization, while Baseball America has him fourth among all Yankees farmhands. Both raters point out his fastball that gets into the high nineties. With the Patriots and Railriders, he has gotten numerous swinging strikeouts. He also has a high-speed changeup and a mid 80’s slider. Scouts say his secret to success is his fastball with movement.

Between the two teams this year, he has a respectable 4.13 ERA and a 4-1 record in his last fifteen games. Gil strikes out 33% of hitters he faces but also walks too many players, which has dogged his career.

The 23-year-old is 6′ 2″ and weighs 185 pounds. There is no question that Gil will be a major league pitcher; the question will be if it is as a starter or out of the bullpen. But, on August 3rd, he got to experience something Gil has waited all of his life for, and he was successful.

Gil is of Dominican descent. As an international free agent in 2015, Gil signed with the Minnesota Twins. He debuted in the Dominican Summer League for the Twins. Gil did not pitch in 2016 and was 0-2 with a 2.59 ERA in 14 starts in 2017. Just before the minor league season started in 2018, Gil was traded to the New York Yankees.

Gil will get his next start against the Seattle Mariners this Sunday in an afternoon matinee. He will face the Mariners Yusei Kikuchi. The New York Yankees will hope that he can come close to his debut performance; if he can, he will at the very least become a viable option for starting games when needed. On the other hand, if he bombs like many pitchers do in their sophomore start, he may not be quite ready for the majors. In either case, it appears that Gil has a bright future with the New York Yankees.

New York Yankees Analysis: The Yankees can still win the AL East

anthony rizzo, yankees

The New York Yankees are 8-2 in their last ten games. If the Yankees continue at the same pace they can forget about the Wild Card berth, they will win the East! The Yankees are 16-9 since July 6th.

There have been some major changes from mid-July to now. The Yankees have been excelling, and the rival Red Sox and Tampa Bay Rays have been faltering. At the beginning of the season, I predicted that the Yankees’ major stumbling block to winning the East would be the Tampa Bay Rays, and I still believe that. I also said the Red Sox would fall apart. Although they haven’t fallen apart, they are not playing good baseball recently.

In the past ten games, the Yankees are 8-2, the Red Sox are 3-7, and the Tampa Bay Rays are 5-5. The Yankee record is impressive because they have done it minus three of their starting pitchers. Ace Gerrit Cole, starter Domingo German, and Corey Kluber. Looking forward, all of these pitchers will be coming back shortly. In addition, near the end of the month, they will also get the 2018 19-8 winner, Luis Severino, back into the fold. If he doesn’t immediately return to form, he can still be a powerful arm out of the bullpen.

During this period the New York Yankees have also gotten some help from the minors. Nestor Cortes Jr. and Luis Gil have uplifted the Yankees with some really good replacement pitching. The likes of Rougie Odor, Greg Allen, and Tyler Wade have also helped the Yankees during a time that the Yankees have been without their gold glove-like third baseman Gio Urshela and 2020 home run leader Luke Voit.

There is no question that the New York Yankees acquisitions before the trade deadline have boosted the Yankees’ fortunes of possibly winning the AL East. The Yankees can now put out a lineup that is right-left, making it much harder for opposition pitchers to navigate the powerful Yankees lineup. The Yankees added three pitchers, lefty contact hitter Anthony Rizzo and power-hitting lefty Joey Gallo. So far, contenders can’t keep Rizzo off the bases, and last night Gallo hit his Yankee leading 26th home run of the season, lifting the Yankees over the Mariners.

The addition of Rizzo and Gallo has also strengthened the Yankee defense; both are excellent defenders. As a result, the Yankees are finally getting the offense out of first base for the first time in years, not since Mark Teixeira have the Yankees had a healthy offensive defender at first base.

For the first time this season, the Yankees can look forward to an offense that can consistently win games. With 54 games left to the season, the Yankee season will be determined by how the pitching holds up and if they can escape further Covid problems. They will also have to rely on less than stellar play from those teams ahead of them and the rising Toronto Blue Jays. It won’t be easy, but the Yankees can pull out a division win in the East.

New York Yankees: Seattle Mariners vs. Yankees series preview

Tonight the New York Yankees could be entering a pivotal series with the Seattle Mariners; both teams are battling for a wild card berth. Unfortunately, the Yankees and the Mariners are both coming off losses for a series sweep. The Yankees won two of three from the Orioles, and Seattle took two of three from the Rays.

The Yankees are in third place 58-49, six games behind the Tampa Bay Rays in the AL East. They are 7-3 in their last ten games. The Mariners are in third place in the AL West. They are 58-51, going 5-5 in their last 10 games, 7 1/2 game behind the Houston Astros.

The Yankees last met up with the Mariners in Seattle about a month ago. The Yankees won the series taking two of the three games. Since then, the Yankees have acquired Joey Gallo and Anthony Rizzo, who give the Yankee lineup a totally different look.

The Mariners were buyers before the trade deadline also. They picked up former Yankee pitcher  Asher Wojciechowski, SS Edwin Arroyo, RHP Diego Castillo, and RHP Joaquin Tejada. This is a series that the pitching of both teams will probably decide. The Yankees are without ace Gerrit Cole, Corey Kluber, and Domingo German. The Mariners have their pitchers lined up for the four-game series, but the Yankees may be relegated to a bullpen game in game two. The Yankees only have two regular pitchers available; they have just pitched in the last two games and will not be available for this series.

Tonight, August 5, 7:05 pm:

Tonight Nestor Cortes Jr. will take Domingo German’s normal spit in the rotation. Cortez has been very successful for the Yankees. He is coming off a 10 inning win against the Rays when he pitched a season-high 79 pitches. Overall as a starter and reliever, he has an ERA of 1.93 across 32.2 innings of work. 6 Mariners have had at-bats against Cortes, none getting a hit.

He will face the new Mariners pitcher Tyler Anderson who is 5-8, ERA 4.39 in 19 starts. In his first game with the Mariners, he allowed three runs in 5.1 innings against the Texas Rangers. Anthony Rizzo has faced Anderson 18 times with a .389 batting average off of him. Joey Gallo has only faced him once and homered off of him.

Friday, August 6, 7:05 pm:

The Yankees have not announced a starter for this game, because as of now, they don’t have one. They could surprise us with Deivi Garcia or another minor leaguer, but it is more likely that they will patch a game together out of the bullpen.

Whoever the Yankee pitcher is, he will face Marco Gonzales. a lefty that is 3-5 with an ERA of 5.15. Gonzales has pitched better lately. He has only faced the Yankees twice. In 2019, he held them to just one run in six innings. However, the year before, the Yankees held him up for six runs. Both Rougie Odor and Joey Gallo have had their way with Gonzales; both have averages over .333 in 41 at-bats.

Saturday, August 7, 1:05 pm:
The new Yankee acquisition Andrew Heaney will start his second game as a Yankee on Saturday afternoon. He bombed out pretty badly in his first start. He gave up four home runs in the first two innings of his 4 inning game. He is 6-6 with an ERA of 5.42. Heaney will have trouble navigating four Mariners that all have batting averages of .400 against him.
Heaney will face the Mariners, Chris Flexen, a righty that is 10-5 with an ERA of 3.75 and 75 strikeouts in 20 games. He is not a strike-out pitcher but relies on ground ball outs. He is coming off his 10th win of the season against the Tampa Bay Rays. DJ LeMahieu is the only Yankee that has been successful off of him, going .667 in three at-bats.

Sunday, August 8, 1:05 pm:

Luis Gil will get his second start since being brought up from the RailRiders. In his first start, he was masterful, going six innings of scoreless ball. He is 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA. However, no Mariner has seen him pitch except via video.

Gil will face Yusei Kikuchi, who was an All-Star this year. The lefty is 7-6 with an ERA of 3.89 and an impressive 129 strikeouts. The Yankees got 5 runs off him in their first meeting this season in just two innings, he recovered the rest of the way, but the damage had already been done.

Note: All of the games will be broadcast on the YES Network and ROORNW in the northwest. Saturday’s game will also be broadcast nationally on MLBN out of market.

Yankees News: Luis Severino update, Voit homers, two minor-leaguer’s dominate Baltimore

yankees, luis gil

The New York Yankees experienced something special on Tuesday evening as Luis Gil took the mound in his first-ever major-league start. Over 6.0 innings, Gil allowed four hits and zero earned runs, collecting six strikeouts over 88 pitches. For a minor-league player to display this type of adequacy, the Yankees should be considering him as a potential option early next week. With Ace Gerrit Cole currently on the COVID-19 list, the Yankees have relied on a few unreliable options.

For example, they rolled with Andrew Heaney on Monday, as the Bombers were plastered for seven runs. Gil performed far better, despite hosting a 5.64 ERA in Triple-A.

Aside from Gill, one other youngster dominated in his first MLB action. Stephen Ridings, who is classified as a starting pitcher but came in as relief, posted three strikeouts, hitting triple digits with his fastball. Ridings stated after the game that his grandmother had passed the day before, so his performance and experience were indescribable. After such a valiant effort, the Yankees should heavily consider giving both pitchers another opportunity in the near future.

Luis Severino injury update:

Severino pitched 2.1 innings for the Double-A Somerset-Patriots in an 8-4 win on Tuesday. He allowed two hits, two runs and struck out four batters over 43 pitches. This was his first rehab start, putting him in a good spot to potentially make a return in September. Severino has suffered multiple setbacks, including a groin strain several weeks ago that pushed his return date back. Hopefully, he can build off this performance, as it wasn’t exactly what the Yankees hoped for. It will take him time to work his way back into shape, but he’s on the right track.

First baseman Luke Voit cracked a homer with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre in a 7-2 loss to the Worcester Red Sox. Unfortunately, the Yankees have already replaced Voit at first with Anthony Rizzo, who has been phenomenal offensively for the team since the acquisition. Voit will be fighting for a designated hitter role upon his return, as he will remain with the team for the rest of the season as the trade deadline has passed.
