New York Yankees 4 game series with the dangerous Athletics, here’s the preview

The New York Yankees are coming off 11 straight wins and have gone 28-8 since July 17th, escalated them to just 4.5 games behind the AL East-leading Tampa Bay Rays. The Red Sox are 3 games behind the Yankees and the Blue Jays 8 back from the Yanks. The pitiful Baltimore Orioles will lose over 100 games this season.

During this winning period, the Yankees have faced some pretty tough teams. Late in July, they took a series from the Tampa Bay Rays; they beat the White Sox and Seattle Mariners and swept the Boston Red Sox. They also did what they needed to against the lesser Marlins, Royals, and Orioles. In addition, they are coming off a series win of the number 1 Atlanta Braves. Now tonight, they start a four-game weekend set against the dangerous Oakland Athletics.

Earlier in the month, the New York Yankees were fighting for that second wildcard berth with the Athletics. Since then, the Yankees a gotten the first berth, and the Athletics have slipped 1.5 games behind Boston for the second spot. The Yankees are playing their best baseball of the season, and the Athletics not so much, only going 2-8 in their last ten and losing four in a row.  But because the A’s have not been great recently, the Yankees can’t be complacent; the A’s are a very dangerous team at the Oakland Coliseum.

Tonight, August 26, 9:40 pm

Tonight the Yankees will start Jameson Taillon, who has been the Yankee’s best pitcher during their 28-8 winning streak. The righty is 8-4 with an ERA of 3.94 with 121 strikeouts. The Yankees have won all of his last seven starts. He is coming off his 8th win of the season against the Minnesota Twins, although he gave up three runs in 5.1 innings of work. Tonight is the exact same matchup as when the Yankees met up with the A’s on June 18th. The Yankees lost that game, but Taillon only gave up two runs. Wandy Peralta took the loss when he gave up 3 runs in the sixth inning.

Taillon will face one of the Athletics’ best pitchers in righty James Kaprielian who is 7-4 with a 3.25 ERA and 87 strikeouts. Kaprielian is coming off three straight wins, two against the Rangers and the most recent against the Giants. Kappy isn’t going to be happy when he sees Joey Gallo as a Yankee. Gallo has 7 at-bats against him, hitting .571. DJ LeMahieu and Aaron Judge have also hit .333 against the righty.

Friday night, New York Yankees ace Gerrit Cole will be on the mound for his third start since coming off the Covid list. Cole is  12-6 with a 2.92 ERA and an incredible 191 strikeouts. Cole has the second-most strikeouts in the American League. Cole has not faced the Athletics this season. In the past, only Elvis Andrus has hit well off of Cole.

Cole will face lefty Sean Manaea; he is 8-8 with an ERA of 3.77 and 151 strikeouts. Manaea is coming off two losses in a row. In the Rangers loss, he gave up seven earned runs in 5 innings of work.  The last time he faced the Yankees on June 20, he took the loss. Aaron Judge, DJ LeMahieu, and Gary Sanchez have pretty much had their way with Manaea all going .333 or better off him.

The Saturday matinee will pit Nestor Cortes Jr. against Frankie Montas. Cortes has been a blessing for the Yankees since taking over for the injured Corey Kluber. The Yankees won 6 of his 8 starts as he was stretched from being a reliever to a starter. His last win was against the Twins when he threw 104 pitches, getting seven strikeouts giving up only 2 runs. Half of the A’s have never seen Cortes pitch. Only Matt Olsen has been successful off him.

Cortes will face Frankie Montas, 9-9, with an ERA of 3.84 and 161 strikeouts. Only the ex-Ranger Yankees have faced Montas, Rougie Odor, and Joey Gallo have hit well off of him.  Montes is coming off two straight losses, one against the White Sox and one against the Giants.

Sunday evening’s game will feature Jordan Montgomery on the mound for the Yankees and Paul Blackburn for the A’s. “Monty” is a lefty that is 5-5 with an ERA of 3.69 and 123 strikeouts. As suggested by his ERA, Monty is a better pitcher than his record. For all Yankee pitchers, he has the misfortune of getting the least run support. The Yankees had won his last four starts, including his most recent won over the Atlanta Braves when he gave up just one run. Josh Lorie and Matt Olson have Montgomery’s number.

Paul Blackburn, a righty, has a limited record of 0-1 with an ERa of 4.09 and 8 strikeouts. Blackburn has only pitched two games for the A’s, losing both of them. Blackburn has an odd baseball history kicking around for 8 years that injuries have marred. He hit the majors 5 years ago with the A’s, but he has only pitched 23 innings in those five years. Only Rougie Odor has seen him pitch; he has a .333 average off him.

Notes: All game times given are Eastern Daylight Time. The Thursday and Friday games are televised on the YES Network and NBCSCA in California. Saturday will be on NBCSCA and in the New York area on WPIX and its affiliates. The Sunday night game will be nationally televised only on ESPN. When the New York Yankees conclude this series they will move on to Los Angeles to play a 3-game series with the Angels, before returning to the Stadium to play the Orioles.

New York Yankees Recap: Giancarlo Stanton powers the Yankees to their 10th win in a row

Tonight the New York Yankees started a short two-game series with the Atlanta Braves at Truist Park in Atlanta, Georgia. This after winning nine games in a row and becoming the winningest baseball team in baseball. They are 26-8 since July 17th. Just 4.5 games out of first place in the AL East. Now they face the first-place team in the NL East. The Yankees put Jordan Montgomery on the mound to face the Braves Huascar Ynoa. The Yankees hoped to do quick work out of this series before going on to a west coast swing. The Yankees won their 10th in a row 5-1.

In the first inning, Ynoa faced DJ LeMahieu, who struck out looking. Anthony Rizzo flew out to left field. Aaron Judge singled for his 15th game in a row on base. Judge stole second. The Yankees have more stolen bases in the second half than any team in baseball. Joey Gallo went down on strikes leaving one on base. At the bottom, Ozzie Albies ground out on the first Montgomery pitch. Jorge Soler walked. Freddie Freeman hit into a force out at second. Austin Riley struck out swinging for the final out of the inning. No score.

Giancarlo Stanton led the second, who homered to right field for the early Yankee lead in the game. Gary Sanchez ground out to short Rougie Odor popped out to right-center. Andrew Velazquez went down looking, but the Yankees got a run in the inning. At the bottom, Dansby Swanson got a run tying home run to right. Adam Duvall flew out to Stanton in right. William Contreras walked. Guillermo Heredia flew out to a running Joey Gallo for the second out. Huascar Ynoa struck out swinging. New York Yankees 1 Atlanta Braves 1.

Pitcher Jordan Montgomery led off the third inning by going out swinging. LeMahieu ground out to left. Rizzo went down on strikes for a quick inning for Ynoa. At the bottom, it was the top of the lineup for the Braves. Albies flew out to Stanton in right. Soler flew out to a running Judge in center. Freeman ground out to first to end the scoreless inning, a 1-2-3 inning for Montgomery. Yankees 1 Braves 1.

The fourth inning was led off by Aaron Juge, who ground out to short. Joey Gallo went down swinging. Stanton struck out for a quick inning for Ynoa. At the bottom, Riley ground out to short. Swanson flew out to short. Duvall walked. Contreras struck out. The bottom of the inning was scoreless for the Yankees.

The fifth inning was scoreless for both teams. Jordan Montgomery went five full innings allowing two hits and one run.

At the top of the sixth, LeMahieu singled. Rizzo struck out. Judge flew out to shallow center. Gallo walked bringing up Stanton with two on and two outs; he got a two-run double, scoring LeMahieu and Gallo for the two-run lead by the Yankees. Stanton, with his homer in the second, had scored all the runs in the game. Sanchez struck out swinging, but the Yankees took the lead in the game. At the bottom, Riley against Jonathan Loaisgia struck out swinging. Swanson went down on strikes. Duvall singled to left. With one on and two outs, Contreras ground out to Velazques, who flipped to second for the final out. New York Yankees 3 Atlanta Braves 1.

In the seventh inning, Odor led off against new Braves pitcher AJ Minter by going down swinging. Velazquez flew out to the warning track in from of the bullpen. Then, Brett Gardner that replaced Judge in center went down on strikes. Heredia led off the bottom of the seventh by tapping back to Loaisiga. Joc Pederson pinch-hitting for the pitcher tapped into Sanchez’s glove for out number two. Albies struck out swinging. Yankees 3 Braves 1.

DJ LeMahieu led off the eighth inning again Edgar Santana and flew out to center. Rizzo ground out to second. Judge got a base hit to left. Gallo walked. A balk moved the runners up. Luke Voit pinch-hitting for Loaisgia walked the bases loaded for Sanchez. Sanchez facing new Braves pitcher Jessie Chavez and singled to left with the bases loaded and two outs, scoring both Judge and Gallo for the Yankees 4 run lead. Odor flew out to center to end the half. At the bottom Soler with Wandy Peralta on the mound, singled to center. Freeman hit into a 5-6-3 double play. Riley doubled to right-center. Swanson stuck out swinging. New York Yankees 5 Braves 1.

The top of the ninth inning was led off by Velazquez, who lined out to left field. Gardner went down looking. LeMahieu walked. Rizzo struck out swinging. At the bottom, with closer Aroldis Chapman on the mound, Duvall was called out on strikes. Contreras ground out to Velazquez at short for the second out. Heredia ground out to short to end the game and get the Yankees their 10th win in a row.

The final score was the New York Yankees 5 and the Atlanta Braves 1. The winning pitcher was Jordan Montgomery, and the loser was Huascar Ynoa.

Yankees to start 10-day road trip

The New York Yankees start a 10-day road trip today after going 9-1 in their last ten games. They have won series after series and are most recently off a series win over the Minnesota Twins. The Yankees are the winningest team in baseball after going 26-8 since July 17th.

This will be a tough road trip for the Yankees; first, they face two excellent pitchers for the Atlanta Braves during a short two-game series. Tonight Jordan Montgomery starts against Huascar Ynoa. Tuesday night’s game will pit Andrew Heaney against Yankee killer Charlie Morton. After the Braves series, they will play three games with the Oakland Athletics and the Los Angeles Angels before returning to Yankee Stadium and a series with the Baltimore Orioles.

Luis Severino to get checked out again

Luis Severino’s long-awaited return to the Yankees may have to be put on hold again as pitching this season seems less and less likely. Manager Boone has let be known that Luis Severino will reportedly fly across the country to California this week to get an in-person examination from Dr. Neal ElAttrache who is an Orthopaedic surgeon specializing in sports medicine at Cedar Sinai Hospital. He is also Team Physician for the Los Angeles Dodgers. For Severino, this will be a second opinion.

Severino has been out from the Yankees since his Tommy John surgery at the beginning of 2019, not allow him to play at all in 2019 and 2020. Since then, he has been struggling to get back with the Yankees. GM Brian Cashman recently said he expected Severino back with the team by September 1st. But that went down the drain when he strained his groin in a rehab assignment in June. Then, last week he pulled himself from a rehab game due to shoulder tightness. He had an MRI that showed no structural damage, but whether he pitches again this season might be evident after this in-person check out at Cedar Sinai and a clean bill of health.

We all know that Yankee prospect Luis Gil has been showing off for the Yankees in his first few games pitched as a starter. But Gil is not the only Yankee prospect that is shining this season. Anthony Volpe that grew up idolizing shortstop Derek Jeter is making a name for himself with the Hudson Valley Renegades; he has an OPS of over 1.000 to go along with 20 homers and 28 steals in the minors this year. That puts himself right up there with Jasson Dominguez as the Yankees’ number one prospect. Some of his success is due to his work during the 2020 season when there were no minor league games.

Rays Injury news good news for the Yankees

In baseball, you never want to see anyone on any team injured, but that fact remains a deterrent to one team and benefits another. The Rays have reported Right-hander Chris Archer lasted just two innings Sunday in his return from the IL. Archer left the game with hip soreness. He will be checked out by doctors as the Rays are concerned he may have more hip trouble. Although the Rays are in first place they have had pitching concerns ever since ace Tyler Glasnow need Tommy John surgery and will miss the entire season.

On top of that, Yankee killer Ji-Man Choi left Sunday’s game with left hamstring tightness. According to Ray’s manager Kevin Cash when he hit a double and getting to second base, it grabbed him and continued to tighten up. Choi was hitting .250 this season with nine home runs in 64 games. Add to that the recently obtained Nelson Cruz has landed on the Covid-19 list. These are critical problems for the Rays as they try to protect their 4.5 game lead ahead of the Yankees.

Yankees latest injury updates

A pitch hit Gardner’s right elbow and forced him out of the game in the Yankees’ 10-2 win over the Twins on Friday night. On Saturday, he was still out of the lineup. Manager Boone has said that he doesn’t feel it’s too serious and will not be put on the IL. Instead, he will travel with the team on their road trip and likely see action on the west coast.

The Yankees star player Gio Urshela is advancing in his rehab. Yesterday with the Somerset Patriots, he went 3 for 4 with a double and scoring a run. He looked good in rehab from a hamstring injury. A date for his return to the team has not been announced.

Gleyber Torres is advancing in his rehab from an injured thumb caused by a bad slide into second base. On Friday, he took dry swings and did some infield work. No timeline has been given for his return either.

Yankees wild card stock is rising

The New York Yankees have won 9 games in a row and their tenth series in a row, being the best performing team in baseball. They have gone from nearly 10 games behind in the AL East to just 4.5 games behind the division-leading Tampa Bay Rays. From July 17th to the present, they have a 26-8 record. During the span, the Yankees have gone from 3 1/2 out of the second wild-card slot to 2.5 games ahead of the Red Sox for the first wild card spot.

Donaldson making an ass out of himself

The New York Post reports that New York Porch Sport, the Donaldson, has blasted the New York Yankees and ace Gerrit Cole. Apparently, he was embarrassed by his play against Cole in the Minnesota Twins series. Earlier in the year, he accused Cole of using sticky stuff. Now he made this statement:

“Yeah of course he’s still using that stuff,” Donaldson said of Cole. “I know my capabilities. The only way to make me look so feeble at the plate is to have a bit of extracurricular help. I’m sending my findings to Manfred soon.”

More playing time has paid off for Tyler Wade

Tyler Wade has always been a useful utility player for the Yankees for the past few years. But with injuries to both Gio Urshela and Gleyber Torres, Wade has finally played enough game to show what he is worth to the Yankees. And that is just not his excellent defense in the field, but now playing more games, he has shown that he can hit also. He has raised his batting average from below .200 to .278. He has 15 hits and 4 extra-base hits during August. Saturday against the Twins, Wade started in left field, giving a day of rest to Joey Gallo. He went 2 for 4, one a double, and one RBI. Wade has been one of the best Yankee hitters in this month, going .500 since August 3rd.

The New York Yankees have won 9 games in a row fighting some difficult teams like the White Sox, Red Sox, and to a lesser degree, the Minnesota Twins. However, for the Yankees, there won’t be any letup as they face a difficult 10-day road trip. First, today they will start a short two-game series in Atlanta against two outstanding Braves pitchers. Then they will move on to the west coast to face both the Oakland Athletics and the Los Angeles Angels before returning to the Stadium to play the Baltimore Orioles.

The Yankees have now fallen back to 4.5 games out of first place in the AL East due to not playing yesterday because of hurricane Henri. However, the Rays did play, and they shut out the White Sox, causing the half-game drop back in the standings. Now today, the Yankees will have a big test against the Atlanta Braves. The Braves have a comfortable lead in the NL East, going 9-1 in their last ten games, matching the Yankees winning record for the span.  However, the Braves have the edge in this series as the Yankees will face two pitchers with winning records.

Tonight, August 23, 7:20 pm:

Tonight New York Yankees fans will see Jordan Montgomery face the Brave’s Huascar Ynoa at Truist Park in Atlanta. The lefty Montgomery is 4-5 with an ERA of 3.77. The Yankees have won many more games that were pitched by “Monty” than the record shows; he has gotten none to very little run support in his games. The Yankees have won 14 of his starts. Montgomery is coming off three straight Yankees wins against the Rays, Marlins, and Red Sox. No Braves player has ever hit a home run off Jordan.

Montgomery will face Huascar Ynoa, a righty with a 4-2 record and a low ERA of 2.40. Until last week, Ynoa hadn’t pitched since May 16th, when he exited a game with a fractured right hand that kept him on the shelf for 3 months. He returned to play on August 17th, a game he won against the Miami Marlins, not giving up a run in 5.1 innings of work. Few Yankees have seen Ynoa pitch, but DJ LeMahieu and Anthony Rizzo have both hit well off him. Gary Sanchez faced him once, getting homer off the righty. Tonight’s game will be televised on the YES Network, Bally Sports South, and MLBN out of market.

Tuesday, August 24, 7:20 pm:  

Tuesday night Andrew Heaney will face Yankee killer Charlie Morton. Heaney is a lefty that is 8-8 with an elevated 5.51 ERA. Since coming to the Yankees from the Angels, Heany had not pitched well, although he had his best outing on August 18th when he gave up just one run in 7 innings of work against the Boston Red Sox. In his previous game, he gave up seven runs in just five innings against the White Sox. If he has a benefit in this game, it’s that few Braves have seen him pitch.

Heaney will have his hands full trying to outlast the Braves, Charlie Morton. Morton, in his career, has been a Yankee killer for both the Houston Astros and the Tampa Bay Rays. With the Braves, he is 12-4 with an ERA of 3.47 and 164 strikeouts this season. He is coming off two straight wins against the Washington Nationals and the Miami Marlins, giving up two runs per game. DJ LeMahieu and Brett Gardner have been relatively successful off him. Aaron Judge has a .067 batting average against him 15 at-bats. That one hit was a home run.

The Yankees faced Morton on April 20 in a game they won, although Morton only gave up one run. His bullpen failed him. The game will be televised on the YES Network, Bally Sports South, and MLBN out of market.

When the New York Yankees finish this short series, they will fly out west to face the Oakland Athletics and the Los Angeles Angels. The first two night games will be at 9:40 pm EDT at Oakland Coliseum.

The New York Yankees are coming off a series sweep of the Boston Red Sox and going ahead in the AL East. The Yankees are 8-2 in their last ten games and feeling really good for their chances of taking the AL East division. Although there are still some pieces to come back, the Yankees are mostly healthy and playing their best baseball of the season.

Tonight they enter a four-game series against the Minnesota Twins at the Stadium in the Bronx. They hope to continue their excellent play and secure their ninth series win in a row. Sweeping a four-game series is really difficult, but the Yankee’s confidence is really high right now. The Yankees are second in the AL East, five games behind the Tampa Bay Rays, winning 8 of their last 10. The Twins are second to last in the AL Central but have been playing better recently, going 7-3 in their last 10 games.

Tonight, August 19, 7:05 pm:

Tonight the New York Yankees’ best pitcher over the past month, Jameson Taillon, will take on the Minnesota Twins pitcher John Gant in the first game of a 4 game weekend series. Taillon is 7-4 with an ERA of 3.89 and with 116 strikeouts. Taillon is coming off a win over the Chicago White Sox. The Yankees have won his last six starts in a row. Taillon has only gotten better as the season progresses; he has lowered his ERA from 7.56 to 3.89 over the span.

Taillon will face the Twin’s John Gant that is a righty with a 4-6 record and an ERA of 3.49 with 69 strikeouts. Gant started the season as a starter for the St. Louis Cardinals but didn’t pitch well and was sent to the bullpen. Now with the Twins, he has pitched in seven games, never going more than 2 innings. Over the span, he has one hold. The only Yankee with significant experience with Gant is Anthony Rizzo, who had bat .500 in 12 at-bats against Gant.

Friday night Nestor Cortes Jr. will take the mound for the Yankees with the lowest ERA of any Yankee starter. Nestor is a lefty that is 1-1 with an ERA of 2.55 and 53 strikeouts in six games as a starter. He is coming off a six-inning outing win over the White Sox, giving up just one earned run while striking out seven.

Cortes will face the Twin’s Charlie Barns, who has yet to win the Twins. The lefty is 0-2 with a 4.91 ERA. Barns has one advantage going into this game; no Yankee has ever seen him pitch except video. Barns is coming off a game the Twins won over the Tampa Bay Rays. He gave up one run, striking out three over five innings of work.

Friday night’s game will be televised on YES and Bally Sports North.

Saturday, August 21, 1:05 pm:

The New York Yankees ace Gerrit Cole will get his second start after coming off the Covid list. Cole is 11-6 with an ERA of 3.04 and an incredible 185 strikeouts leading all baseball in strikeouts this season. Cole is coming off a win over the Los Angeles Angels when he went 5.2 innings giving up one home run while striking out 9 Angels.

Cole will face Kenta Maeda in the matinee. Maeda is 6-4 with an ERA of 4.41 and 108 strikeouts. This is Kenta’s 21st game of the season. He is coming off his second win in a row. His last win was over the Tampa Bay Rays when he only allowed 3 hits in his scoreless six-inning effort. Most of the Yankees have not seen Maeda pitch, but Joey Gallo has been successful off of him with a .500 average in six at-bats; one was a home run.

Saturday’s matinee will be televised on Bally Sports North and nationally on FS1.

Sunday, Jordan Montgomery will take the mound for the New York Yankees. “Monty” is a lefty with a 4-5 record and a 3.77 ERA with 121 strikeouts. However, Montgomery pitches better than his record would suggest, as he has gotten nearly no run support in the majority of his games. The Yankees have won 12 of his 20 starts this season. The Yankees have won his last two starts, although he was shaky in his last start against the Red Sox, admitting he was tired after coming off the Covid list.

Montgomery will face the Twin’s, Griffin Jax. Jax is a righty that is 3-3 with a 5.11 ERA. Jax is a reliever that has converted to a starting role as the Twins pitching rotation has struggled. The Yankees faced Jax twice in June, two games that the Yankees won. He is coming off 3 games that the Twin have won. His last outing was a six-inning effort where he gave up 7 hits and one home run against the Indians.

Sunday’s game will be on WPIX, its affiliates, and Bally Sports North.

Note: When the Yankees finish this series, they leave Yankee Stadium and move on to Truist Park for two games with the Atlanta Braves. They will then make a west coast trip to face the Angels and the Athletics.

New York Yankees Recap: Yankees pull out a win in first game of a doubleheader (video)

After a series win over the Chicago White Sox and a win in a makeup game with the Los Angeles Angels last night today, the New York Yankees entered what could be a pivotal three-game series. The three-game series could go a long way to who will secure a wild card berth. Today will be a day-night doubleheader; if the Yankees win both, they will be even with the Red Sox in the race. Game one had Jordan Montgomery on the mound in his first game returning from the Covid list. He faced Tanner Houck. The Yankees won it 5-3.

Leading off for the Red Sox was Kiki Hernandez, who ground out on the first pitch. Then, Hunter Renfroe got a base hit to left. Next, Xander Bogaerts went down on strikes. Next, Rafael Devers singled, but Renfroe was tagged out by Velaquez trying to reach third to end the inning. At the bottom, with Tanner Houck on the mound, DJ LeMahieu ground out to third. Brett Gardner also ground out to third, as did Aaron Judge to end the inning with no score.

At the top of the second, JT Martinez went down on strikes. Kyle Schwarber was called out on strikes, but a wild pitch allowed him to get to first, where he was called safe, but on review, he was out. Christian Vázquez flew out to right field. At the bottom, Joey Gallo led off by flying out to center field. Luke Voit was hit by the first pitch he saw. Rougie Odor hit a single to center, moving Voit to second. In his return from the Covid list, Gary Sanchez lined directly to third, holding the runners. Now with two outs, Tyler Wade singled, loading the bases. Andrew Velazquez got two-run single driving in Voit and Odor. LeMahieu popped out to end the inning, but the kid from the Bronx, Velaquez, created his own field of dreams with his family in the stands. New York Yankees 2 Boston Red Sox 0. Velazquez got hugs from third base coach Phil Nevin.

Alex Verdugo led off the third inning by grounding out to second.  Bobby Dalbec singled beyond short. Hernandez walked. Renfroe tapped to Monty for the second out as the runners moved up. Bogaerts got a two-run single, but Bogaerts was out at first as Sanchez fired. New York Yankees 2 Red Sox 2.

At the bottom of the third, Gardner tapped back to Houck. Judge struck out swinging. Gallo flew out to center, keeping the game tied at 2.

Devers led off the fourth inning popped out to Sanchez. Martinez went down on strikes. Schwarber struck out as the Red Sox went down 1-2-3. At the bottom,  Luke Voit struck out. Rougie Odor singled. Sanchez ground out. Tyler Wade singled, and Velaquez flew out to center to end the inning.

Vazquez led the fifth inning, who homed to the left-field stands for a solo shot, putting the Sox up by a run. Verdugo hit a line drive out to Odor. Dalbec struck out. Hernandez walked, and that was the day for Montgomery, as Aaron Boone called in Albert Abreu to face Renfroe, who flew out to Judge to end the half.

At the bottom, with Garrett Whitlock on the mound, LeMahieu struck out. Gardner walked. Judge walked. With Gallo coming up, Cora went with Josh Taylor; Gallo walked the bases loaded. With the bases loaded and one out, Voit got a bloop single to center, scoring Gardner and Judge as the Yankees took the lead in the game. Giancarlo Stanton pinch-hitting for Odor with men on the corners and one out singled to center, driving in Gallo. Jonathan Davis was brought in to pinch-run for Stanton. Cora again went to the bullpen for Hansel Robles to face Gary Sanchez, who struck out. Tyler Wade, with two on and two outs, walked. Velaquez struck out to finally end the inning, but the Yankees picked up 3 runs in the half to go ahead in the game. New York Yankees 5 Red Sox 3.

In the sixth inning, with Jonathan Loaisiga on the mound, Bogaerts struck out. Devers ground out to short, and Martinez lined out to Velaquez at short. At the bottom, it was the top of the order for the Yankees. LeMahieu against Robles singled to left. Gardner walked with LeMahieu taking second. Judge struck out. Again Cora went to the bullpen to have lefty Austin Davis face lefty Joey Gallo. Gallo struck out for the second out of the inning. Then the lefty had to face the righty Luke Voit who walked to load the bases for the Yankees again. Jonathan Davis brought in as a pinch-runner struck out, leaving the bases loaded. Yankees 5 Red Sox 3.

Schwarber led off the seventh and final inning of the game with Jonathan Loaisgia in for the close and singled to short. Vazquez singled to Judge in right, with Schwarber stopping at second. Arauz pinch ran for Vazquez. Verdugo singled, loading the bases with no outs in the seventh. Travis Shaw pinch-hitting flew out to Gardner, but Gardner’s arm held the runners. Hernandez struck out. Renfroe struck out to get Loaisiga out of the inning unscathed. The Yankees win!!!

Nothing comes easy for the New York Yankees, but they get the win. The final score was New York Yankees 5 and the Boston Red Sox 3. The winning pitcher was Albert Abreu, the loser was Whitlock, and the save went to Jonathan Loaisiga (5). The video below is Velazquez’s two-run shot in the second.

 

 

New York Yankees: Two teams, four games, here’s the preview

Today was supposed to be a much-needed day off for the New York Yankees, but today they will play a makeup game with the Los Angeles Angels. The game was made necessary due to a rainout when they last met in June at the Stadium. Tomorrow the Yankees will start a three-game series with the Boston Red Sox. The Angels are 12 1/2 out in the AL West, and the Yankees are 5.5 games out in the AL East; every game is important, but if the Yankees can sweep the Red Sox, they will take over second place in the East division.

Tonight, August 16, 7:05 pm:

Tonight, at Yankee Stadium, we will see the return off the Covid list of Yankee ace Gerrit Cole. Cole had not pitched since July 29th, when he lost to the Tampa Bay Rays. While on the Covid list, although he hasn’t pitched, he could throw the ball at home during his time away. This season he is 10-6  with a 3.11 ERA and an incredible 176 strikeouts. The Yankees hope Cole will return to form in tonight’s game.

Cole will be facing the Angels Jose Suarez, a lefty that is 5-5 with a 3.90 ERA for the Angels in 15 games. He is coming off a loss on the 10th against the Toronto Blue Jays. Suarez typically gives up a lot of run and home runs as well. The Angels have lost 8 of his starts. DJ LeMahieu and Giancarlo Stanton have hit well off Suarez.

Tuesday, August 17, 1:05 pm., game one:

On Tuesday, the first game of a day-night doubleheader will feature pitching sensation prospect Luis Gil on the mound for the Yankees. The righty is 1-0 with a Zero ERA and 14 strikeouts in two starts against the Orioles and Mariners. Gil has been the replacement for Gerrit Cole while he was on the Covid list. He has given the Yankees more than they could have asked for and now earns another start.

The Red Sox has not announced a starter for the game. The game will be televised on the YES Network, NESN, and MLBN out of market.

Tuesday, August 17, 7:05 pm., game two:

The night installment of the doubleheader will see the return of Jordan Montgomery from the Covid list. The lefty is 4-5 with an ERA of 3.69 and 115 strikeouts. “Monty” pitches much better than the record would suggest. He has gotten very little run support in most of his games. The Yankees hope the rest will allow Montgomery to have a good start tomorrow night. He is coming off of two wins, one against the Rays and one against the Marlins.

The Red Sox have not announced a starter for this game either. The game will be televised by WPIX and its affiliates in the New York area, NESN, and MLBN out of market.

Wednesday, August 18, 7:05 pm:

In this game, the tables are turned on the Red Sox as they have announced their starter, but the Yankees haven’t. This is largely because the Yankees don’t have a reliable starter for the game. It would normally be Andrew Heaney’s start, but that will likely not be the case with how poorly he has pitched. So instead, it could end up being a bullpen game started by either Lucas Luetge or Wandy Peralta. For both, it would be their second start.

The Red Sox will start Nick Pivetta, one of their best starters. He is a righty with a 9-5 record, an ERA of 4.20, and 139 strikeouts. He is coming off a six-inning outing win against the Baltimore Orioles. The Yankees have not faced Pivetta this season. DJ LeMahieu and Giancarlo Stanton have both hit well off of Pivetta in the past. Wednesday night’s game will be nationally televised on ESPN. It will also be on the YES Network and NESN.

New York Yankees: 4 Major takeaways from Yankees sweep of Miami

The New York Yankees entered last night’s game in Miami against the Marlins, hoping for a sweep after only being able to sweep four of ten possibilities. Instead, they got that sweep as they head into long homestand tonight. The Yankees won the first game 3-1, the second 4-2, and last night Jordan Montgomery led the Yankees in another 3-1 win to complete the sweep. The Yankees are now 56-48, 7 games behind the East-leading Tampa Bay Rays. They have won 6 of their last 10 games and are 2.5 games out of the second wild-card slot.

Will Yankee fans show the love?

By the trade deadline, most industry analysts believe that the New York Yankees were the AL winners in improving their team by the deadline. This deadline is different from previous years, where teams could still trade after the deadline to acquire players off of waivers. However, that is not the case this year; the team they have at the deadline is the team they will live with for the rest of the season.

The Yankees picked up three new pitchers and two lefty hitters to add to the lineup. As a result, the Yankees can now produce a lineup with five lefty hitters, should the need arise. Two of those new Yankees are Joey Gallo and Anthony Rizzo. Gallo, who the Yankees got from the Rangers, has had a solid defensive start for the Yankees, but only last night did he get his first hit, a double in the seventh that almost topped the centerfield wall for a homer.

The other new New York Yankee hitter is Anthony Rizzo; he has been nothing short of amazing, almost single handily winning all three Marlin games for the Yankees in his Yankee debut weekend. He homered in the first game, homered in the second game, going five for five at the plate, and last night although not homering, he, with the Yankees scoreless to start the eighth inning, supplied the go-ahead run for the Yankee lead that they would not relinquish.

Today the New York Yankees return to Yankees Stadium in the Bronx to face the Baltimore Orioles. Yankee fans are some of the toughest fans in baseball, showing their disappointment when the team or a particular player is not playing well, but at the same time, they are not shy of showing their love. So when Anthony Rizzo takes to the field at first base, he will surely be welcomed; the only question is how loud a welcome he gets when he walks to the plate at the bottom of the first inning.

Montgomery has another good outing

Poor Jordan Montgomery struggled to find his way in the first inning, giving up a run, but then settled in and gave the Yankees a shot at winning the game. He pitched well as he found his curveball. In the end, he went five innings giving up just that one run while striking out six. But again, he got no runs support at all. The Yankees didn’t score until the eighth inning.

Montgomery has now given up 10 runs in his last 32.5 innings with absolutely no run support at all. Over the span, he has a .057 ERA. Last night, new Yankee pitcher Joely Rodriguez (J-Rod) got the won after throwing just one pitch for the Yankees to add insult to injury. Life isn’t fair.

Yankees lose a starter to the IL

Last night it was announced that Yankee starter Domingo German was being put on the 10 IL for right shoulder inflammation. Manager Aaron Boone said German would get an MRI exam in New York on Monday. After the Yankees did not make any significant pitching upgrades by the trade deadline, this is just another blow to the rotation this season. However, this type of injury is not totally unexpected as pitchers all over baseball adjust to playing a 162 game season after only going 60 games last season.

New New York Yankee starter Andrew Heaney, a lefty with a 6-7 record with an ERA of 5.27 and 113 strikeouts, will start tonight’s game against the Baltimore Orioles. German’s next scheduled start is for the first game at the Stadium against the Seattle Mariners; on August 5, Nestor Cortes Jr will most likely be started.

Yankees made the plays

Although the Yankees did not score until the eighth, mostly due to Sandy Alcantara’s superb pitching, the scoreless innings still supplied some excitement. Although Brett Gardner was overshadowed by the play of Tyler Wad and Anthony Rizzo, Gardner has an excellent game; he ran down fly balls and even climbed the wall once getting an out. He also led off the rally in the eighth that eventually got the win for the Yankees.

At times during the night, Tyler Wade and Anthony Rizzo put on a show, making challenging plays. Tyler Wade, who is not a natural third baseman, completed an almost impossible play that a Gold Glove third baseman might not make. At the Marlins, half of the eighth Chisholm hit into a double play to end the inning. Rizzo made a spectacular scoop, fired to second, and made the catch to complete the double play. Rizzo is the real deal.

In the pitching department, Aroldis Chapman got his 22nd save of the season.

New York Yankee Recap: Rizzo roadshow continues as Yankees sweep the Miami Marlins

In the matinee today, the New York Yankees went for the sweep of the Miami Marlins at LoanDepot Park in Miami, Florida. The Yankees won the first game 3-1, the second game 4-3 with new Yankee Anthony Rizzo hitting a home run in each and going five for five. The Yankees today had five lefties in the starting lineup. The Yankees are 4 for 10 this season when trying to accomplish a sweep of a series. The matchup today was Jordan Montgomery vs. the Marlins Sandy Alcantara. The Yankees swept the Marlins with the 3-1 win today.

Anthony Rizzo led off for the Yankees with Alcantara on the mound and popped out to shallow left. Aaron Judge struck out swinging. Joey Gallo struck out as the Yankees went down in order. At the bottom, Miguel Rojas led off by doubling off the left-field wall. Jazz Chisholm got an infield single moving Rojas to third. Brian Anderson got an RBI out to third, scoring Rojas. Jesus Aguilar popped out to a charging Judge. Lewis Brinson struck out, but the Marlins went on the board first. Miami Marlins 1 Yankees 0.

Gary Sanchez led off the second inning by grounding out to third. Rougie Odor ground out to second. Gleyber Torres hit back to Alcantara to end the scoreless half. Bryan De La Cruz led off the bottom by flying out to Gallo in left. Sandy Leon flew out to Gardner in center. Mangneuris Sierra ground out. Marlins 1 Yankees 0.

The top of the third inning was led off by Brett Gardner, who struck out. Tyler Wade walked and stole second. Jordan Montgomery went down looking. Rizzo flew out to center to end the half. The bottom was led off by the pitcher Sandy Alcantara who struck out. Rojas flew out to Judge in right. Chisholm reached on a ball three infielders couldn’t catch. Rizzo got the error on the play. Chisholm went for the steal but was called out. Upon review, the call was upheld. Marlins 1 Yankees 0.

Odor struck out as the Yankee stranded their only base runner of the game. At the bottom, Anderson went down on strikes. Aguilar struck out. Brinson popped out to Torres to end the inning. The top of the fifth was led off by Gleyber Torres, who went down swinging. Gardner ground out to second. Wade went down on Alcantara’s 8th strikeout of the game. De La Cruz led off the bottom by singling for his first major league hit. Leon walked on four pitches. Sierra reached on the force out at second. De La Cruz went to third.  Sierra stole second. Alcantara chopped to third, holding the runner while being thrown out at first. Rojas went down on a Monty curveball, and the Marlins don’t score. Marlins 1 Yankees 0.

Pinch-hitting for Monty was Greg Allen, who struck out for Alcantara’s 9th strikeout. Rizzo ground out. Judge struck out to end the half and give Alcantara his 10th strikeout. At the bottom, Chisholm faced the new Yankee pitcher Clay Holmes. Monty only gave up 3 hits in the game. Chisholm struck out swinging. Anderson ground out to third. Aguilar hit down the third baseline, but Tyler Wade made a spectacular throw for the out. Marlins 1 Yankees 0.

Joey Gallo led off the seventh inning and got his first Yankee hit with a double that was almost a homer. Sanchez ground out to third. Odor chopped out to first. Torres, with the game-tying run just 90′ away, ground out to second to strand Gallo. At the bottom, Brinson led off for the Marlins, and he gound out. De La Cruz, ground to Wade, was originally called a single, but he was out at first on review. Leon found a hole for a two-out single. Sierra faced the new Yankees pitcher Joely Rodriguez and ground out to end the inning. Marlins 1 Yankees 0.

Brett Gardner led off the eight with a lead-off single off new pitcher Anthony Bass. DJ LeMahieu pinch-hit for Wade. He struck out. Giancarlo Stanton pinch hit for J-Rod. He reached with Gardner going to third. Against new Marlins pitcher Richard Bleier, Rizzo got a base hit to left, scoring Gardner and tying the game at 1. Judge singled and scored Stanton. Rizzo was out at third on the play. Gallo struck out but not before the Yankees scored two runs for the lead in the game. New York Yankees 2 Marlins 1

At the bottom of the eight against Zack Britton, Alfaro pinch hit for Bleier; he ground out. Rojas walked on four pitches. Chisholm hit into a double play to end the inning. Rizzo made a spectacular scoop, fired to second, and made the catch to complete the double play. Rizzo is the real deal.

At the top of the ninth inning, Sanchez against Dylan Floro stuck out. Odor flew out to the center-field wall. Torres got a base hit single to center. Gardner who started the eighth-inning rally, singled on a double-booted ball that scored Torres all the way from first base. LeMahieu grounded out, but the Yankees picked up another run. At the bottom with last licks in the game, Aroldis Chapman came on to close it out for the Yankees. Brian Anderson went down on a Chapman slider. Jesus Aguilar was called out on strikes. Lewis Brinson flew out to Gardner to end the game and get the sweep for the Yankees.

The final score was the New York Yankees 3 the Miami Marlins 1. The winning pitcher Joely Rodriguez throwing only one pitch. The loser was Anthony Bass. Aroldis Chapman got his 22nd save of the season.

 

 

 

 

 

New York Yankees: Preview of the weekend Miami Marlins series

The New York Yankees start a three-game weekend series with Derek Jeter’s Miami Marlins tonight at LoanDepot Park, a retractable roof stadium located in little Havana just two miles west of downtown Miami. It is the smallest MLB park by capacity. The Yankees have great ties with the Marlins, its manager is the former Yankee star Don Mattingly, and Derek Jeter is the team’s Chief Executive officer.

The Marlins this season sit at the bottom of the National League East with a 44-58 record and coming off losing 6 of their last ten games. The New York Yankees are in third place in the AL East 8.5 games behind the division-leading Boston Red Sox. However, they are 6-4 in their last ten games.

The Yankees will have a new look tonight with acquisition Joey Gallo somewhere in the middle of the lineup. It is not known if Anthony Rizzo will be available for tonight’s game. They will also have reinforcements in the bullpen with new pitcher Clay Holmes who made his scoreless relief debut last night for the Yankees. Joining him in the bullpen will be Joely Rodríguez, who came to the Yankees in the Gallo trade. J-Rod is a lefty that is 1-3 with an ERA of 5.93 with the Rangers in 31 games.

Tonight, July 30, 7:10 pm:

Jameson Taillon will take the mound tonight in Miami, facing right Zach Thompson. Taillon, all season long, has been one of the Yankee’s least dependable pitchers but has improved recently. Taillon is 6-4 with an ERA of 4.36 and 93 strikeouts. He is coming off one of his best wins of the season against the Boston Red Sox in a Yankee 4-3 win. He has won the last two of his starts. Jesus Aguilar has given Taillon the most trouble hitting .357 against him with 2 home runs in 14 at-bats.

Taillon will face Zach Thompson, a righty with a 2-3 record with an ERA of 2.45 in 8 starts this season. The Marlins have lost his last three starts. No Yankee has ever seen Thompson pitch except in videos.

As of this writing, the Marlins have not announced their starters for the last two games of the weekend series. Tonight’s game will be televised in the New York area on WPIX and its affiliates. In Miami on Bally Sports Florida.

Saturday, July 31, 6:10 pm:

Game two of the series on Saturday night will feature Domingo German on the mound for the Yankees against a yet to be announced Marlins pitcher. German has been a mixed bag for the Yankees this season. After bombing out in his first start, he was sent down to Scranton to figure it out. Upon his return, the Yankees won his next six starts. Most recently, he has not gone deep into games and has struggled. He pitched seven innings losing to the Boston Red Sox in his last outing, only giving up 1 run and striking out a season-high 10 Boston players. Which German shows up for game two is anyone’s guess. Watch in the YES Network and Bally Sports Florida.

Sunday, August 1, 1:10 pm:
The final game of the series, a Sunday Matinee, will be started by Jordan Montgomery, a lefty that is 4-5 with an ERA of 3.78 and 100 strikeouts. Montgomery has been one of the Yankee’s best pitchers this season but has gotten nearly no run support in his starts. The Yankees have lost 5 of his last 6 starts but only scored 12 runs across those starts. He is coming off a five-inning 102 pitch scoreless outing against the Tampa Bay Rays. Sunday’s matinee is on the YES Network and Bally Sports Florida.
