New York Yankees: 4 Major takeaways from Yankees 8-7 loss to the Phillies

New York Yankees, Aroldis Chapman

Yesterday late afternoon, the New York Yankees, after failing to sweep the Minnesota Twins, took the field at Citizen’s Bank Park hope to right the ship and get a two-game sweep of the Philadelphia Phillies. That was not to be and now will hope to split the series in a Matinee today before moving on to a three-game series in Buffalo against the Toronto Blue Jays.

Starter Taillon failed miserably

Time may be running out for Jameson Taillon as a Yankee starter. The Yankees, can’t have a starter in the rotation that has an ERA hovering around 6.00. So far he has only one win, the Yankees have lost 8 of his 12 starts. Last night was his worst performance of the season. He went 1/3 of an inning, giving up earned runs and putting the Yankees into a hole they couldn’t recover from.

Taillon would get strikes but couldn’t find the pitch to put hitters out. He threw 34 pitches with only one put out as the Phillies continued to foul off his pitches. In an after-game interview, Taillon said that he feels great, better than he has in a long time. He said he knew the pitches to throw; he just couldn’t execute them. Taillon said it was the first time in his five-year career he left a game in the first inning.

Gutsy Yankee comeback falls short

It was the first inning, not a single Yankees had come up to the plate yet, and they were already 4 runs behind in the game. The often silent Yankee lineup took on the challenge and clawed their way back to a 7 run tie in the ninth inning. They immediately answered the Phillies with 2 runs in the bottom of the first. They got another run in the sixth and eighth and exploded for 3 more runs in the top of the ninth to tie it up.  Unfortunately, Aroldis Chapman took his second loss in a row in the bottom of the tenth.

The New York Yankees had their fifth game in a row, hitting double-digit hits. Gary Sanchez, Rougie Odor, and DJ LeMahieu all hit home runs in the game. One thing that has dogged them all season long was again apparent in last night’s game the Yankees went 2 for 12 with runners in scoring position. The Yankees could have fallen victim to the National League park that put Giancarlo Stanton out of the lineup.

Yankees’ challenge going in the wrong direction

So far in this up and down season, the Yankees are failing to make progress; in fact, they are going in the wrong direction. They are now the farthest behind the East-leading Tampa Bay Rays that they have been this season, in their worst start since 1991. After last night’s game, they are 7 1/2 games behind and 5 1/2 behind the Red Sox. They are even with the Toronto Blue Jays, who they play next week in Buffalo.

The fortunes of the Yankees have switched up a bit. In recent games, the Yankee hitting has seemed more alive than it has all season. But on the reverse side, the pitching, both starting and in relief, is starting to show some cracks. The two main problems are that when the Yankees send out Jameson Taillon, they can almost be assured of a loss. More concerning than that is that the bullpen that has nearly carried the Yankees over the first 40 or 50 games is starting to show wear. Cessa, Green, and Chapman have all imploded in games.

Luis Severino leaves a game injured

During last night’s game in Philadelphia, the New York Yankees got bad news from Brooklyn. Luis Severino left the mound in the Renegades game injured. There is no information on the exact injury or how bad it is. But in the video showing him coming off the field helped by two coaches, he appeared to be in extreme pain.

We do know that a ball did not hit him. It appeared he misstepped after making a pitch, and the pain became immediately evident. In his 1 2/3 innings, some of his pitches neared 100 mph. After the game with the Phillies, Aaron Boone said he was aware of the injury but had few details say that he would go for an MRI on Monday. The Yankees were looking forward to his return to the team in a month or so. Now that may be in question, as the Yankees hope the injury is minor.

Notes:

Zack Britton: After Thursday night’s game in Minnesota, Boone said it was likely the Britton would re reactivated sometime during this road trip. Yesterday, fans were surprised to find that he was activated just hours after that statement and pitched a clean 8 pitch inning last night.

Domingo German takes the mound: In a matinee game today, the Yankees will wrap up their short series with the Phillies. Domingo German will take on the Phillies Aaron Nola. The 1:05 pm game will be televised on the YES Network, NBCSP, and MLBN.com out of market.

New York Yankees Recap: Taillon gives up 4 in the first inning for the Yankees 8-7 loss in the tenth

New York Yankees, Jameson Taillon

Late this afternoon, the New York Yankees took on the Philadelphia Phillies in the city of brotherly love. It was a beautiful day for a baseball game, cloudy with temperatures in the mid-seventies but with no chance of rain. The Yankees’ Jameson Taillon took on the Phillies Vince Valasquez.

Realmuto ground out to short. Harper struck out to end the inning. Phillies 5 Yankees 2.

Brett Gardner led off the fifth inning, had a push bunt, and beat it out. Chris Gittens pinch hit for Cortes, and he walked. LeMahieu two on and no outs ground out to short. With men on the corners Judge at the plate, he struck out. Torres struck out to end the half. At the bottom, Luis Cessa took over the pitching for the Yankees. Hoskins walked.  McCutchen reached on a bobbled ball by Urshela. Bohm singled up the middle with Hoskins scoring. Segura ground out, but the Phillies picked up two runs. Phillies 7 Yankees 2.

The top of the six was led off by Urshela, who flew out to Harper, making a sliding catch. Sanchez struck out. Odor hit a homer (418′) into the second deck in right field. Andujar struck out to end the half. At the bottom, Realmuto facing Wandy Peralta, lined out to LeMahieu; Harper hit LeMahieu, who beat him out at first. Hoskins walked on four pitches. McCutchen hit back to Peralta to end the inning. Phillies 7 Yankees 3.

Brett Gardner led off the seventh by walking for all three times on base. Clint Frazier pinch-hitting hit into the 6-4-3 double play. LeMahieu hit directly to first to end the half. At the bottom, Zack Britton, in his first game back from the IL, faced Bohm, who ground out to third. Torreyes popped out to second. With the new pitcher Saurez on the mound, Aaron Judge got a lead-off single. Torres flew out to left-center. Urshela chopped off of home plate for an out. Sanchez singled to right driving in Judge. Giancarlo Stanton’s pinch-hitting for Odor hit back to the pitcher for the final out. Herrera led off the bottom of the eighth by flying out to right. Segura stuck out, and Realmuto flew out to left for a quick inning for Chad Green, Phillies 7 Yankees 4.

At the top of the ninth, Andujar lined out to second. Gardner walked. Tyler Wade pinch-hitting for Chat Green walked. With two on and one out, LeMahieu came to the plate. He homered for three runs tying up the game at 7 apiece. Aaron Judge went down on strikes for the third time in the game. Torres went down looking, but the Yankee had come all the way back from a 3 run deficit to tie the game. At the bottom, Harper got a lead-off double to Gardner. Hoskins flew out to Judge in in right. McCutchen was intentionally walked. Bohm hit into a force out at second. Torreyes struck out for free baseball in the tenth.  Both teams scored 7 runs.

At the top of the tenth inning, with Torres at second, Gio Urshela hit back to the pitcher. Gary Sanchez struck out. Kyle Higashioka pinch hit for Odor, and he went down looking going to the bottom of the tenth. With Chapman on the mound, Jankowski with Torreyes as the ghost running at second reached a high throw. Herrera flew out to the foul left. Segura had an infield hit to Urshela, but he couldn’t get Torreyes at home, and that was the game.

The final score was the Philadelphia Phillies 8 and the New York Yankees 7. The winning pitcher was Bradley, and the loser was Aroldis Chapman.

New York Yankees: Yankees visit Philadelphia, here’s the series preview

The New York Yankees are coming off a series win over the Minnesota Twins and playing much better after the slide. This season, the Yankees have had double-digit hits in four games in a row for the first time. The Yankees are now 33-30 and 4-6 in their last ten games for third in the AL East 6.5 games behind the division-leading Tampa Bay Rays.

This weekend the New York Yankees have a short two-game series in the city of brotherly love. First, they will meet up with ex-Yankee Joe Girardi’s Philadelphia Phillies. Then, today, they will have a late afternoon game and an early afternoon game on Sunday before traveling north to Buffalo to play a 3-game set with the Toronto Blue Jays starting on Tuesday night.

Today, 4:05 pm:

The Yankees’ Jameson Taillon will face the Phillies’ Vince Velasquez. Jameson Taillon has been the Yankees’ least dependable starting pitcher this season. At times he has shown bright, but more often, he has struggled to come back to form after his two Tommy John surgeries that have kept him from pitching for most of the last two years.

Taillon is coming off a no-decision against the Red Sox in which he allowed three runs on six hits over 5 1/3 innings. Taillon has pitched to a 3.52 ERA over his past three starts, spanning 15 1/3 innings. Today will be his twelfth start on the season. The Yankees have lost 7 of his eleven starts. He has not gone deep into games, only going 6.1 back on May 7th.

The Yankees will face the Phillies’ right-hander Vince Velasquez who is 2-1 with an ERA of 4.33 and 52 strikeouts over 12 games, 8 of them starts. Valasquez started the season strong, pitching to a 2.30 ERA in his first six starts. However, things have not been going well for the righty in his last two starts producing an ERA of 11.57. He has allowed nine runs in just seven innings. The Phillies are hoping he can bounce back to form today against the hard-hitting Yankees. Today’s game will be televised on WPIX and its affiliates in the New York area. NBCSP and MLBN out of market.

Sunday, June 13, 1:05 pm:
On Sunday, the Yankees will send out Domingo German to face the Phillies’ Aaron Nola. German has been a bit of a mystery this season, pitching lights out or struggling at times. German presently is 43, with an ERA of 3.12. Germán has allowed three or fewer runs in each of his past nine outings, and 10 of his 11 starts this season. Against the Red Sox on May 6th, he was pulled after just 5.1 innings in a no-decision after giving up just one earned run. He had just 3 strikeouts in the game.
The Phillies will challenge German with Aaron Nola. The righty is 4-4 with an ERA of 4.06 and with an impressive 85 strikeouts. Nola is a seven-year veteran pitcher with an impressive record. On April 18th Nola had a complete-game shutout of the St. Louis Cardinals. Fortunately for the Yankees, they won’t be facing that pitcher. The Phillies have lost six of his last eight starts. The Yankees will want to get to Nola early and get him out of the game. Their bullpen is not a strength, although certainly better than last season. The game will be televised on the YES Network, NBCSP, and MLBN out of market.

Yankees: Jameson Taillon defends Cole’s sticky situation

New York Yankees, Aaron Boone, jameson taillon

The Yankees pitching has been very reliable for New York this year. With up and down offensive performances, having a strong rotation and bullpen has been very important. They’ve been one of the most dominant pitching groups in baseball. A big reason for that is the presence of Gerrit Cole.

Gerrit Cole has been everything the Yankees could’ve imagined since signing him in 2019. This year specifically, he’s been putting up CY Young numbers. Recently, he’s been shaky. However, a great performance against the Twins on Wednesday put him back on track.

It was especially encouraging to see Cole perform well with all the pressure from the media. Twins’ Josh Donaldson outed Cole as a possible foreign substance user. That made this matchup gain nationwide attention. Cole finished pitching six innings with only two runs allowed and punched out nine. Donaldson went 0-3 with two strikeouts against Cole. It was a great response from the Yankees’ ace.

Before the Twins’ dumbfounding comeback win last night, Jameson Taillon made comments regarding Cole and the situation. Taillon and Cole have a great relationship dating back to their days with the Pirates. They’ve become good friends throughout their careers.

Taillon started by saying that if the MLB is actually “taking things seriously,” (regarding illegal substances) then he’s “really excited” about it. He thinks “eliminating” the sticky stuff will help them as a group. Saying that he really wants the MLB to go clean and “level” the playing field.

Regarding Gerrit Cole specifically, Taillon stated that “as a friend” it was tough to see. But he was “happy” Cole went out there on Wednesday and had a great start. He said he “doesn’t think sticky stuff is what makes Gerrit Cole, Gerrit Cole.” Taillon said he’s watched Cole throw bullpens and prepare for starts and thinks he will be the same if not better after this. Saying that this “might’ve” lit a fire under Cole.

Throughout the entire press conference, Taillon was very transparent about the situation. He gave some really good insight into the problem as a whole. Taillon seemed very confident that the Yankees would only improve from this being enforced more. It didn’t seem like he thought this would be a problem for any Yankee pitchers.

After a very rough ending to a three-game set in Minnesota, the Yankees will travel to Philadelphia. Tune in as Taillon starts things off against the Phillies tomorrow evening!

New York Yankees: 3 Major takeaways from 2nd loss to the Red Sox

New York Yankees, Chad Green

Last night the New York Yankees lost their second game in a row blowing any chance of taking a series from their rival Boston Red Sox. In the process, they slipped below the Toronto Blue Jays and into fourth place in the AL East, 5 1/2 games out of first place. They are now 3-9 in their last twelve games scoring only 2.4 runs per game.

Jameson Taillon fails to execute

The New York Yankees starter Jameson Taillon didn’t pitch horribly but failed to execute key pitches that gave up runs. Taillon threw 76 pitches, 54 of them strikes while striking out only 3 Red Sox. Last night was Taillon’s third no-decision in his last four starts for the Yankees. In an after-game interview, Taillon said it was not the called pitches, it was his failure to execute them.

Taillon pitched satisfactorily until the sixth inning when he clashed with Rafael Devers. Devers who has always been a problem for Yankee pitching hit a two-run single breaking a tied game. When Taillon left the game after 5.1 innings, he left a runner on base, that runner scored off reliever Jonathan Loaisiga, contributing to Taillon’s final line. Taillon has a 5.09 ERA, 1.26 WHIP, and 58:16 K/BB across 53 innings this season. Taillon has been the Yankees’ least productive starter as he tries to regain his 2018 form.

Bullpen fails to get the job done

The normally dependable Yankee bullpen imploded last night as Chad Green gave up four runs in only 2/3rd of an inning while striking just one. Two of those runs came from a 2 run home run by Rafael Devers. He took the loss in the game and now has an 0-4 record. Even though he officially took the loss the game was already lost after starter Jameson Taillon allowed three runs in his 5.1 innings of work. After Green was pulled from the game, Wandy Peralta and Brooks Kriske combined for 1.1 scoreless innings.

Chris Gittens added to bolster the lineup

The New York Yankees finally have called up first baseman Chris Gittens. This call-up solves two problems immediately. Gittens, .283/.486/.585 at the Rail Riders this season can take over first base and move DJ LeMahieu back to second base. It also replaces no production from a first baseman to a good hitting performer.

The Yankees have had a hitting problem that doesn’t seem to want to go away. During the last three years since Aaron Boone was hired as manager of the team, they have scored over an average of 5 runs per game. This season they are scoring under 4 runs a game and during the present slide only 2.4 runs per game over the last twelve games. Part of the reason for this is that they haven’t been getting production from left, centerfield, and first base. With the addition of the hard-hitting Gittens, the problem may at least be solved at first base. Last night in his major league debut he went hitless. He struck out once and walked once. With his batting average of .268, he is definitely an upgrade over Mike Ford.

Other hitting problems include the consistency and timeliness of hitting. When the Yankees do hit they fail to bring those runners home. In the last four games, they are 2 for 23 with runners in scoring position. Another problem the hitting coach Marcus Thames must fix is getting the lineup to get the ball up, they have far too many ground balls that lead into double play outs.

New York Yankees Recap: Red Sox took the second game in a row from the Yankees

New York Yankees, Aaron Boone, jameson taillon

After losing game one to the Boston Red Sox, the New York Yankees met up again with the Sox in the Bronx at Yankee Stadium for game two of the 3 game set. Jameson Taillon faced the Sox ace Eduardo Rodgriguez. It was an absolutely perfect night for baseball. 86 degrees and sunny at the Stadium with no chance of rain. The game was broadcast nationally on the Fox Network. With the largest crowd of the season (20K), the final score was the Red Sox 7 and the New York Yankees 3.

In the first inning, Taillon took the mound and faced the Soxs’ Danny Santana, who popped out. Verdugo doubled. Bogaerts flew out to Urshela in foul territory, and he made an amazing throw to the new first baseman Chris Gittens for the out. Rafael Devers lined out to LeMahieu to end the half. At the bottom of the inning, LeMahieu was at the plate, and he lined out to first. Giancarlo Stanton chopped to short for the second out. Then, Aaron Judge lined out on a sharp hit to short. No score.

Hunter Renfroe led off the second by lining out. Marwin Gonzalez walked.  Hernandez was out to first. Christian Vázquez singled but tried to make it two and was called out for the final out of the half. Gio Urshela led off the bottom of the inning, and he struck out swinging. Gleyber Torres struck out on a change-up. Chris Gittens, in his major league debut, ground out to short. No score.

Bobby Dalbec led off the third inning by flying out to Frazier in right. Santana flew out to Andujar in left. Verdugo ground out to first to end the half. At the bottom, Miguel Andujar led off for the Yankees and flew out to left-center for Rodriguez’s seventh Yankee putdown. Gary Sanchez flew out to right field. Clint Frazier hit to left for a single. LeMahieu singled, moving Frazier to second. Stanton struck out to end the inning, leaving two on base. After three, no score.

Xander Bogaerts, at the top of the fourth, flew out. Devers flew out. Renfroe singled to left field. Gonzalez flew out to Andujar in left, leaving one on. Aaron Judge led off the bottom and struck out looking. Urshela singled to center. Torres hit a two-run home run into the left-field stands. Chris Gittens ground out, and Andujar lined out to end the inning, but the Yankees took the two-run lead. New York Yankees 2 Boston Red Sox 0.

Enrique Hernandez led off the fifth inning by striking out against Taillon with only 53 pitches in the fifth inning. Vazquez hit back to Taillon for the second out. Dalbec struck out to end the half as Taillon dominated. Gary Sanchez led off the bottom by striking to a back door slider. Frazier also struck out. LeMahieu flew to far-right for the last out of the inning. Yankees 2 Red Sox 0.

Santana, at the top of the sixth, flew out. Verdugo singled on a ground ball. Bogaerts doubled to left on a ball that Andujar could have caught. With the tying run on base, Devers singled to right to tie the game up at 2, and that was Taillon’s night. The new pitcher Jonathan Loaisiga faced Renfroe, who singled to left. Gonzalez doubled down the left-field line for the Red Sox lead. Hernandez struck out. Vazquez popped out to catcher Gary Sanchez but the Sox took the 3 run lead. At the bottom, Giancarlo Stanton stuck out swinging. Aaron Judge walked with one away. Urshela doubled on a ground run double with Judge going to third base. Torres faced the new pitcher Garrett Whitlock and flew out to far-right, but it scored Aaron Judge to tie the game. Chris Gittens went down on strikes, but the Yankees tied the game. Yankees 3 Red Sox 3.

Dalbec led off the seventh by grounding out. Santana singled. Verdugo took a four-pitch walk. Bogaerts, with two on and one out, lined directly to Urshela, who made the perfect play to second to get the last out. Miguel Andujar led off the bottom of the frame and went down swinging. Sanchez singled to left with one out. With Tyler Wade running for Sanchez, Frazier hit into a double play to end the inning still tied. Yankees 3 Red Sox 3.

The top of the eighth saw Rafael Devers against the new pitcher Chad Green and singled to center. Renfroe struck out. Gonzalez popped out to third. Hernandez struck out. In the end, they scored four runs after the two-run home run by Dalbec. LeMahieu ground out, Stanton struck out. Judge flew out to cent to end the inning, but the Red Sox went ahead. Red Sox 7 Yankees 3.

In the ninth inning, with Brooks Kriske on the mound, he stuck out Verdugo. Bogaerts struck out. Devers popped out to third baseman Urshela to end the half. With last licks on the line for the New York Yankees, Gio Urshela at the plate he flew out to left. Gleyber Torres struck out. Then it was up to Chris Gittens, and being patient, he walked. Brett Gardner pitch hitting for Andujar, he walked. The Red Sox closer Barnes faced Kyle Higashioka with two on and two outs stuck out to end the game and lose the series for the Yankees.

Final score Red Sox 7 New York Yankees 3. The winning pitcher was Garrett Whitlock, and the loser was Chad Green.

Yankees’ Jameson Taillon: ‘I’m confident we’ll pull through’

New York Yankees, Aaron Boone, jameson taillon

When the New York Yankees brought right-hander Jameson Taillon via trade from the Pittsburgh Pirates, they envisioned a pitcher that may not provide incredible length, but pitched high-quality innings with great run-prevention skills.

After all, in his four years with the Pirates, he never had a FIP (Fielding Independent Pitching) higher than 4.00, and also had a couple of 3.0+ WAR seasons. In other words, they hoped for above-average per-inning efficiency and production.

So far, that hasn’t been the case. Taillon has, over ten starts, a 5.10 ERA and a 4.61 FIP. He has pitched 47.2 innings, so in average, he hasn’t cracked five. The Yankees’ hurler understands he needs to be better in order for the team to reach its objectives.

Yesterday, the red-hot Tampa Bay Rays scored three runs over five innings on the righty, and since the Yankees just haven’t been hitting at all recently, it was too much to overcome.

“It’d be nice to pitch with a lead, but at the same time, that’s how it’s going right now,” Taillon said, per Bryan Hoch of MLB.com. “It’s my job to go out there and put up zeroes, and I put us in a little bit of a hole.”

No shot to the Yankees’ offense

Later in the afternoon, Taillon clarified that his remarks were by no means a shot at his Yankees’ teammates.

Both things remain very real, though: Taillon needs to be better, and the Yankees need to remember how to make consistent hard contact in the air. They need to score more runs, otherwise they risk too much.

“I’m confident we’ll pull through,” Taillon said. “But right now with how it’s going, I needed to definitely put up a few more zeroes.”

The Yankees could eventually get Luis Severino back, maybe this month. They expect Corey Kluber to contribute meaningful innings in several weeks. If Taillon doesn’t improve, and everybody gets healthy, the team will be forced to make tough decisions.

New York Yankees: Tampa Bay Rays series preview

The New York Yankees have been playing poor baseball, losing five of their last six games and being swept by the 2nd worst team in the American League, the Detroit Tigers. They have a bigger challenge going into seven games against the two best teams in the AL East, the Tampa Bay Rays and the Boston Red Sox.

Starting with today’s holiday matinee, the Yankees will face the Tampa Bay Rays for 4 straight games at Yankee Stadium. The Yankees have a losing record against the Rays this season as they did last season. The Rays have good pitching, but the big change this season is that the team is hitting too, winning their last 15 of 16 games and thrusting them into 1st place in the AL East. The Yankees will have to pitch well, hit well, and play clean baseball to have any chance at taking this series.

Today, May 31, 1:05 pm:

Today will be the first game of a 4 game set against the Tampa Bay Rays. The Yankees will send out Jameson Taillon, their least dependable starter, to face the Rays’ lefty Rich Hill. Taillon has been inconsistent, pitching well at times and not so much at other times. He is 1-3 with an ERA of 5.06. He will hope to have a strong follow-up after pitching 5 scoreless innings in his last outing against the Chicago White Sox.

Taillon will face Rich Hill. Hill is 3-2 with an ERA of 3.36. However, in his last four starts this season, he has pitched to a 1.26 ERA.  He has won both of his starts against the Yankees this year.

Tuesday, June 1st, 7:05 pm:

On Tuesday, the Rays will send out their ace Tyler Glasnow to face a yet-to-be-named Yankee pitcher. Glasnow has been totally dominant for the Rays this season. He is 4-2 with an ERA of 2.57 and 98 strikeouts, overtaking Gerrit Cole in strikeouts by 1. He is coming off an eight-inning shutout of the Royals. Although not announced, the likely starter for this game will be Gerrit Cole, who has not pitched since May 22nd.

Wednesday, June 2nd, 7:05 pm:

The Rays will feature Shane McCallahan, a lefty that is 2-0 with an ERA of 3.29. He is coming off five shutout innings against the Kansas City Royals. McCallahan is a rookie and has never pitched to the Yankees or at Yankee Stadium. The Yankees have not announced a pitcher for the game.

Wednesday will also be Lou Gehrig Day at New York Yankee Stadium, celebrating the great Yankee first baseman that died from ALS. The inaugural “Lou Gehrig Day” will be celebrated league-wide this June 2nd. June 2, 1925, began his record-breaking consecutive games streak — 2,130 in total over 14 years — and later, the day the “Iron Horse” died in 1941 at age 37 from “Lou Gehrig’s disease.” The day celebrates his life and baseball career but is also to bring attention to the debilitating disease.

Thursday, June 3rd, 1:05 pm:

Thursday will be a mystery pitcher day, as neither team has announced their starter for the series finale.

In some order, New York Yankees fans will see Gerrit Cole, Jordan Montgomery, and Domingo German during the series. The games will be televised on Bally Sports Sun in Florida and the New York area on the YES Network. Thursday’s game will also be on the MLB Network out of market.

New York Yankees chasing enormous sweep over title contender

New York Yankees, Jameson Taillon

When the New York Yankees welcomed the Chicago White Sox for a three-game series, Yankee fans knew that it’d be an important series. The White Sox entered the series with a 26-16 record, one of the best in MLB and as the favorite to win the AL Central division. So far, the series has gone exactly according to plan for the Yankees, winning both games and allowing just one total run.

Friday’s victory over the White Sox was an early contender for the game of the season for the Yankees. Gleyber Torres drove in both runs, including a ninth-inning walk-off single and a home run earlier in the game. Jordan Montgomery fired seven shutout innings for the Yankees, and the team even turned an around-the-horn 5-4-3 triple play.

On Saturday, Gleyber Torres continued his post-COVID-19 diagnosis tear. Torres drove in four of the Yankees’ seven runs while going 3-for-4. After a terrible start to the season, Torres has elevated his average up to .268 with a .708 OPS. Gerrit Cole shoved, pitching seven scoreless innings and punching out seven.

This sets the Yankees up for a sweep opportunity on Sunday. However, the Yankees have Jameson Taillon on the mound, the one starter who hasn’t quite hit his stride yet. Taillon has a 5.73 ERA with a 1.27 WHIP in eight starts. He does, however, have a 3.00 ERA at home, so that could potentially play a factor in Sunday’s game.

Taillon also has a lot of pressure on him built up by the other Yankee pitchers. Yankee starting pitching hasn’t allowed a run since Tuesday, which was the last time that Taillon pitched. He’d love the continue the streak of scoreless outings, but he’ll have to overcome the elevated pressure.

And finally, this game is incredibly important for the Yankees’ position in the AL East. The team has won five games in a row, however, the Rays have countered it with a nine-game winning streak and the Red Sox have as well with a four-game winning streak.

The Yankees have had a difficult time sweeping series this season, however, they have a great opportunity to finally do so on Sunday.

New York Yankees: Preview of the White Sox Series at the Stadium

New York Yankees, Jordan Montgomery

The New York Yankees are coming off their eighth series win and their 7th shutout of the season. This weekend starting today, the Yankees will face the Chicago White Sox in a 3 game set of two power-hitting teams at Yankees Stadium. This is a huge sports weekend for America. There is the PGA Championship in South Carolina, Stanley Cup Playoffs, the NBA Playoffs, and closer to home, the Yankee White Sox matchup.

The New York Yankees players will enjoy the largest crowds at Yankee Stadium this season. Upon their return, they will see separate stadium sections where fully vaccinated fans can sit not socially distanced but with masks. The rest of the stadium can be 33% occupancy, fully masked, and socially distanced.

The White Sox Yankee matchup should be very interesting; both teams played well with equal records over the last ten games (7-3). The Yankees are six games above .500 and the White Sox ten games over .500 and lead the AL Central. The Yankee pitchers will have their hands full holding down this power-hitting team. Unfortunately, neither Corey Kluber of Domingo German will pitch in this series. The Yankees are also missing some key players to injuries.

Friday, May 21, 7:05 pm:

Game one will be tonight, and the starter for the Yankees will be Jordan Montgomery, and for the White Sox, it will be lefty Carlos Rodon, who has had an excellent season so far. He is 5-1 with an ERA of 1.47 with 49 strikeouts on the season. Rodon is coming off his only loss of the season against the Kansas City Royals. His one downfall as a pitcher is that he walks a batter on average once within every 3 innings. With a sharp pitcher like Rodon, the Yankees will have to take advantage of those walks.

The Yankees will start Jordan Montgomery, who has been inconsistent this season and has had trouble with command. He is 2-1 with an ERA of 4.75 over his eight starts. He is coming off his worst start of the season when he went only three innings in the Yankee 10-6 loss against the Baltimore Orioles. However, that was after two quality starts in a row. The Yankees will need “Monty” to be sharp tonight as he faces one of the better pitchers in baseball. You can watch tonight’s game in Chicago on NBC Sports Chicago and in the New York area on WPIX and its affiliates.

Saturday, May 22, 1:05 pm.

Saturday’s matinee will see the New York Yankee ace Gerrit Cole face the White Soxs’ Dylan Cease another low ERA Sox pitcher.  Gerrit Cole is coming off his only loss of the season in the first game of the Texas Rangers series. He is now 5-2 with an ERA of 2.05 but with an amazing 85 strikeouts. In strikeouts, he is second only to Shane Bieber (92). The Yankees will be hoping that Cole will return to form in this second game of the set.

Dylan Cease is 2-0 with an ERA of 2.41 with 50 strikeouts. Cease has never pitched at Yankee Stadium and has never pitched to the Yankees in his career. So far in 2021, he has slightly over a strikeout per inning.  The Yankees will face the White Sox again in August in the long waited for Field of Dreams game in Dyersville, Iowa. Saturday’s game will be televised on the YES Network, NBCSChicago, and MLBN out of market.

Sunday, May 23, 1:05 pm:

Sunday’s matinee will be an interesting matchup between Jameson Taillon and Dallas Keuchel. Taillon has struggled a bit this season, shaking off the rust from not pitching after his second Tommy John surgery. He is 1-3 with an ERA of 5.73 and has been the Yankees’ least dependable starter. This will be Taillon’s ninth start of the season. He has faced the White Sox only once in his career and went 5 2/3 innings in a no-decision game.

Dallas Keuchel was at one time one of the best pitchers in baseball, not so much anymore, but he can put together some impressive starts. He is 3-1 with an ERA of 4.44. His record looks more impressive than it really is. His last two wins were accompanied by 29 White Sox runs. Keuchel has pitched very well at Yankee Stadium in his five starts there. Sunday’s game will be broadcast on the YES Network, NCBSChicago, and MBLN out of market.
