Hayward shows what Knicks are missing in 3rd straight loss

Before the game, Tom Thibodeau confirmed that Gordon Hayward was indeed a New York Knicks‘ free-agent target.

“We looked at all the free agents. And so, we’ll just leave it at that, but we know how talented he is,” Thibodeau said of Hayward. “We had him rated pretty high on our board. There were a number of [top] guys who we thought would fit us. It didn’t work out this time. And we’ll see how it works out in the future.”

What didn’t work out for the Knicks has been working out pretty well for the Charlotte Hornets.

Hayward wasted no time reminding the Knicks what they missed out in the free agency.

The rejuvenated wingman fired 34 points in leading the Hornets’ manhandling of the fast-fading Knicks, 109-88, Monday night.

The 6-4 Hornets have won their last four games — their first four-game winning streak in more than two years — with Hayward playing worthy of the four-year $120-million gamble.

Hayward has rediscovered his All-Star form during the streak with a 29.2-point average on 55 percent shooting.

In contrast, the Knicks are freefalling and struggling to score. They could have used Hayward’s shotmaking as the Knicks failed to reach 90 points for the third straight game.

Hayward dropped 28 points in the first half — the best scoring half in his career — as the Hornets got off to a hot start.

The Knicks came back from 17 points down and held the lead momentarily, 38-37, on an RJ Barrett floater. But the Hornets quickly took it back and led the rest of the way.

Kevin Knox knocked down five threes in the first half to keep the Knicks afloat. His late triple trimmed the gap, 57-51, at the half. It proved to be the Knicks’ last gallant stand. Knox led the Knicks with a season-high 19 points off the bench.

Hayward slowed down in the second half with only six points as the rest of the team picked up the slack.

The Hornets entered the game as the league’s best passing team, which continued against the Knicks. They had 28 assists, with 14 came from their point guards Devonte Graham and rookie LaMelo Ball.

Ball, who recently became the youngest player in NBA history to record a triple-double, flirted with another. He finished with eight points, 14 boards, and seven assists.

The Hornets’ defense, too, was sharp with their energy overwhelming the gassed Knicks, who were playing on back-to-back nights.

Julius Randle was held down to a season-low 11 points and five rebounds after averaging 23.2 points and 11.8 rebounds. He was a dismal 2-of-9 from the field.

”Julius is getting double-teamed and triple-teamed right now with his post up, trying to get the ball out of his hands, and we can operate off of that,” Thibodeau said. ”We have to have good spacing, and right now we are hesitating a little bit, and I don’t want them to do that.”

The Knicks kept missing their outside shots, with RJ Barrett misfiring all of his five three-point attempts, including an airball. Barrett has now missed 19 of his last 21 three-point attempts.

Immanuel Quickley is also in the midst of a shooting slump, going 2-for-24 from the field in his last four games. The rookie guard was 1-of-10 against the Hornets.

But Thibodeau praised Quickley’s overall play as part of the second unit that sparked their first-half comeback.

Quickley wound up with three points, four rebounds, and three assists.

The Knicks’ second unit provided the silver lining in another blowout loss.

“I thought our bench particulary in the first half, played really well. Even though Quick didn’t shoot the ball well, he played well. I thought Nerlens gave us good minutes, and I thought Kevin was terrific,” Thibodeau said. “That was positive. And now we have to get other people to play better.”

Nerlens Noel was productive in 15 minutes producing four points, five rebounds, a steal, and two blocks. Starter Mitchell Robinson finished with a solid double-double (12 points, 11 rebounds, two steals, and two blocks) but was a team-worst +/- -27.

Austin Rivers, who received his first start with Reggie Bullock unavailable due to a sore right hip, scored 13 points in a team-high 38 minutes.

The Knicks will go home to host the Brooklyn Nets on Wednesday in the battle of New York that will be on national TV. They will face Kevin Durant, another free agent that got away, for the first time since he spurned them in the 2019 free agency.

The Nets, though, are struggling with drama unfolding as Kyrie Irving continues to miss games due to personal reasons.

Report: Knicks pursue Gordon Hayward, Malik Beasley

After a thorough house cleaning that opened up a $40 million cap space, the New York Knicks have reportedly begun shopping.

Marc Stein of the New York Times doubled down on The Ringer’s earlier report of the Knicks’ interest in Boston Celtics’ Gordon Hayward.

According to The Athletic’s Shams Charania, Hayward has declined his $34 million player option and will enter free agency.

Aside from having the cap space, the Knicks have Johnnie Bryant credited for Hayward’s development in Utah.

ESPN’s front office insider Bobby Marks told Empire Sports Media that Hayward could fetch around $20-25 million per in the free agency market.

Paying Hayward in that range will likely remove the Knicks from contention in Russell Westbrook’s sweepstakes.

Meanwhile, CBS’ Sam Quinn has posited that the Celtics could execute a sign-and-trade deal wherein they would have to attach an asset to create a hefty trade exception.

Another target

According to Yahoo Sports’ Vincent Goodwill, the Knicks are also among the interested teams for Minnesota Timberwolves’ combo guard Malik Beasley.

Beasley, who has emerged as a solid starter since the Timberwolves acquired him in the February trade deadline, has become expendable after selecting Anthony Edwards as the top overall pick on Wednesday’s NBA Draft.

Beasley averaged 20.7 points on a spectacular 42.6 percent shooting beyond the arc in 14 games with the Timberwolves. However, legal troubles have marred his otherwise impressive stay in Minnesota.

Beasley is facing charges of fifth-degree drug possession and threats of violence after his arrest in September. Hennepin County officials have also recently challenged his parental rights.

Kevin O’Connor: Knicks interested in Celtics’ Gordon Hayward

It appears the New York Knicks are trying to acquire not only one but two stars in what is shaping out to be a quick rebuild under new team president Leon Rose.

On the heels of multiple reports coming out from New York that the Knicks have weighed on trading for Houston Rockets’ star Russell Westbrook, another star looms on the horizon.

Kevin O’Connor of The Ringer came out with another bombshell: the Knicks are interested in Boston Celtics’ Gordon Hayward.

“Gordon Hayward, who obviously — there’s already been rumors we’ve heard about maybe him wanting to move on. The Knicks are interested, I’ve heard…,” O’Connor said on The Ringer NBA Show The Mismatch.

Earlier this month, O’Connor’s colleague at The Ringer, Ryen Rusillo, posited on Bill Simmon’s podcast that Hayward is mulling opting out and entering the free agency bereft of superstars. If he opts out, he will become the most prominent name out there, with Toronto Raptors’ free agent Fred Van Vleet not far behind.

“I’ve heard Gordon Hayward does want out, but I don’t know if he’s gonna get the money. He’s not opting out of that huge number unless he knows he’s getting the deal.”

The 30-yeard old Hayward has a $34.1 million player option but maybe looking for long-term security after his stint with the Celtics have been defined by injuries.

The Knicks will still have a cap space to offer Hayward even if they absorb the remaining massive $132.7 million left in Westbrook’s original five-year contract.

Hayward averaged 17.5 points, 6.7 rebounds, and 4.1 assists in 52 games for the Celtics last season.

The lure of New York for Hayward has become brighter after Johnnie Bryant, the former Utah Jazz assistant coach, joined the Knicks. Bryant is credited for Hayward’s development into an All-Star while he was in Utah.

Hayward has also been linked to Indiana Pacers in a potential trade for center Myles Turner.

Hayward’s future in Boston has become murky after O’Connor reported in his Mock Draft that the Celtics are planning to reroute their three draft picks for New Orleans Pelicans guard Jrue Holiday.

“The Celtics have offered up their three first-round picks (nos. 14, 26, and 30) in trades to try and move into the lottery, but multiple league sources say they intend to reroute that pick to the Pelicans in exchange for Jrue Holiday. If Boston is able to acquire the necessary assets, it’d still need to add salaries to make a deal work. Could that mean Gordon Hayward or Kemba Walker could be on the move?” O’Connor wrote.

The league’s transaction window is expected to be open beginning Monday.

New York Knicks: 3 big-name free agents the Knicks could pursue next offseason

Could the New York Knicks pursue Anthony Davis next offseason?

As the NBA season idly waits for the end of the coronavirus pandemic, the New York Knicks are likely enjoying their time away from losing consistently and spiraling toward another disappointing season. However, there are some positives to extract from the 2019-20 campaign, such as RJ Barrett, who looked the part as a rookie and portrayed the skill-set the Knicks fell in love with before the draft.

Other positives can be located in the form of Mitchell Robinson and trading Marcus Morris for draft capital and Moe Harkless. The negatives, though, appear in the form of Dennis Smith Jr., the firing of David Fizdale, Julius Randle’s desire to hold onto the ball for ample amounts of time, and much more.

Adding a big-name free agent next offseason is essential, reinforcing Barrett’s progression and development.

Here are three names the New York Knicks could pursue:

1.) Anthony Davis

Davis is expected to opt-out of his contract, which opens up the opportunity for the Knicks to land one of the best players in the league. The big issue is actually the Knicks, as they’re not the most desirable team to play for with the transition of Leon Rose into the GM position and the head coaching spot in a state of flux. Davis would bring success and proven abilities to New York, though, making him the most desirable free agent. Davis has a player option after the conclusions of this season.

2.) Gordon Hayward

Hayward hasn’t been the same since breaking his leg in his first year with Boston, but he has shown flashes of revival. Hayward will likely be on the move, but his injury is still a concern for teams willing to spend big money on a free agent signing.  Gordon has a player option for the 2020-21 season.

3.) Brandon Ingram

Ingram is a restricted free agent, which means New Orleans can match any offer for the All-Star. As one of the rising players in the NBA and a fantastic partner to Zion Williams, the Pelicans won’t let him go without a fight. The Knicks could be intrigued enough to offer him a bloated contract to keep New Orleans at bay, but it will take a lot
