New York Giants injury list far shorter than Dallas Cowboys – a peak inside the opponent

New York Giants, Evane Engram

Only Sterling Shepard, Grant Haley, and Corey Ballentine stood out on the New York Giants injury list for Monday night’s game against the Dallas Cowboys. Shepard and Ballantine dealt with concussions and have been working through the protocol before receiving full-clearance this week. The Giants will have them available for a must-win game, and Shepard’s influence will prove to be significant.

Haley was dealing with a sore knee but managed to practice fully this week and will be fully available. This is the first time the Giants will have a full-team this season, specifically on offense. Rookie quarterback Daniel Jones has played numerous games without star running back Saquon Barkley and Sterling Shepard.

All four of Jones’ top playmakers will be available on Monday, though, as Barkley, Shep, Golden Tate, and Engram will be featured in their usual roles. Head coach Pat Shurmur will finally be able to open up the offense and efficiently utilize the talent. He has been forced to amend his playbook to substitute players and supplement the loss of influential playmakers.

However, the Dallas Cowboys have a long list of injured players.

Here’s a peek into the New York Giants opponent for week nine:

Dallas’ injury report is extensive; listing tackles Cameron Fleming, La’el Collins, and Tyron Smith as “limited” participants. Linebacker Leighton Vander Esch will likely be ruled out on Monday night, which will give the Giants an advantage in the middle of the field. Guard, Zack Martin, and cornerback Anthony Brown were also listed as “limited” during practice this week.

If the Cowboys are without several starters, the Giants will have an edge, considering their overall health this week. It boils down to the defense, though, as Dallas put up a staggering 37 points against the Philadelphia Eagles last weekend. The debut of defensive lineman Leonard Williams is expected to be significant, and defensive coordinator James Bettcher will undoubtedly look to utilize his pass rushers and big-men up-front in the second game of the season against the Giants’ top rival.

New York Giants: Daniel Jones Finally Has All His Weapons

New York Giants, Daniel Jones, Sterling Shepard, Golden Tate, Saquon Barkley, Evan Engram

The New York Giants have been without at least one of their offensive starters in each game this season so far. That is about to change on Monday night. Sterling Shepard cleared concussion protocol and is going to return to the field against the Cowboys this week.

This game will be the first time in 2019 that all of the Giants’ weapons play together. Golden Tate was suspended for the first four games of the season. Sterling Shepard missed weeks two, six, seven, and eight with concussions. Saquon Barkley missed weeks four, five, and six with an ankle injury. And Evan Engram missed week six with a hamstring injury.

In week nine, however, all of these players will hit the field together with Daniel Jones as their quarterback. For the first time in his career, Daniel Jones has a complete arsenal of weapons on the field with him. The Giants are about to tap into his true potential.

Daniel Jones’s Chemistry With Shepard And Engram

In week three, despite not having Golden Tate due to suspension, and being without Saquon Barkley for much of the game due to injury, Daniel Jones lit up the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in his first career start. Much of Daniel’s success came from throwing to Sterling Shepard and Evan Engram.

Daniel Jones targeted Sterling Shepard 9 times against the Buccaneers, completing 7 passes for 100 yards and 1 touchdown. This touchdown pass was a great timing throw in the corner of the end zone, demonstrating the trust and chemistry that these two already have together.

In that same game, Evan Engram managed to gain even more yards than Shepard. Engram was targeted 8 times, caught 6 passes for 113 yards, and scored 1 touchdown. Jones and Engram connected on the first play from scrimmage in the second half in week three for a 75-yard touchdown.

Having Evan Engram and Sterling Shepard both out there on Monday will just add to the Giants’ offense that Daniel Jones has already created such strong chemistry with.

Daniel Jones’s Chemistry With Golden Tate And Saquon Barkley

Since being added to the offense in week five, Golden Tate has been the Giants’ most consistent and productive wide receiver. Over the last three weeks, Tate has averaged 89 yards per game. He is also averaging 10 targets per game with about 6 receptions per game.

Saquon Barkley has also seen an increased role in the passing game recently. Against the Detroit Lions in week eight, Saquon Barkley received 10 targets for 8 receptions, 79 yards, and 1 receiving touchdown. Saquon is a true threat in both aspects of the offense, making him the ideal player to pair with a young quarterback.

Daniel Jones will finally be able to spread the ball around to all his weapons against the Dallas Cowboys on Monday. The season might be a lost cause at this point, with the Giants’ record sitting at a disappointing 2-6, but it will be important for Daniel’s development to have him playing in a fully healthy offense, creating chemistry with his playmakers.

New York Giants news, 11/1 – Josh Gordon a waiver claim option? Darius Jennings

Will the New York Giants claim Josh Gordon off waivers?

Good Morning, New York Giants Fans!

The New York Giants offense isn’t one player away from being an elite unit, but rather more experience for their rookie quarterback. Daniel Jones is the key to success for the Giants moving forward, and providing him with weapons is a priority.

Jones already has Saquon Barkley, Golden Tate, Evan Engram, and Sterling Shepard to utilize, which is more than enough firepower to take over games and increase scoring production. However, claiming former New England Patriots wideout, Josh Gordon, isn’t the worst idea.

Gordon, who was placed on IR last week, was cut after the trade deadline so no competing teams could gain his services. The Giants are one of the worst teams in the NFL and have a high waiver claim spot, which makes Gordon coming to New York a possibility, but an unlikely one.

General manager Dave Gettleman might not want to risk Gordon being a distraction, especially if he relapses and gets into trouble again for drug usage. However, kicking the tires on a big-bodied receiver isn’t a bad idea. They could effectively cut Bennie Fowler and replace him with a far better option. Also, if the Giants were to land Gordon and let him walk as a UFA after the season, they could be in line to receive a compensatory pick, which is another excellent benefit to claiming him.

A kick returner is available:

In recent weeks, the New York Giants have been utilizing wide receiver Darius Slayton as their kick returner, but his lack of lateral speed and quickness have hindered his success. Darius Jennings, former Tennessee Titans, kick returner, was released on Thursday. He led the NFL in KOR last season. That’s an exciting aspect of his game, and he would fill a position of need for Big Blue immediately. Look out for Gettleman to pursue him in the coming days.

New York Giants Will Face Lions Without Their Best Defender

The New York Giants are heading into a week eight matchup against the Detroit Lions with a measly 2-5 record. Both teams are coming off of disappointing losses in week seven.

In this matchup, both teams will also be without key impact players due to injury. Two players that would have been matched up with each other. The New York Giants will be without Sterling Shepard as he is still dealing with his second concussion of the season. On the other hand, the Detroit Lions will be without their star cornerback, Darius Slay.

Slay is a two-time Pro Bowl-selected player, and was once a First-Team All-Pro. The Lions’ defense will miss him greatly, but fortunately for Detroit, and unfortunately for New York, Darius Slay’s replacement is playing great football so far this season.

How Good Has Justin Coleman Been?

Justin Coleman is the Detroit Lions’ slot cornerback and he has been playing at an All-Pro level so far this season. Detroit signed Coleman to a four-year, $36 million contract this offseason and he has lived up to the deal so far.

Coleman plays the nickel corner position, which means he will be guarding the Giants’ slot receiver. The Giants’ starter in the slot is their primary receiver, Golden Tate. Golden Tate will be guarded by Justin Coleman, giving Golden a tough matchup this Sunday.

Coleman has been making plays on the ball at a consistent rate this season. He has already recorded 9 pass breakups this year through only 7 games, 1 breakup shy of his career-high mark of 10 breakups in the entire 2018 season. Check out this impressive, touchdown-saving pass breakup by Coleman against the Chiefs:

Justin Coleman has been the Lions’ best player on defense this season. He is posting an impressive Pro Football Focus score of 74.5, which ranks 16th of all cornerbacks in the NFL and top-ten for all slot cornerbacks in the league. The Giants are going to have a tough time working the ball to Golden Tate when Justin Coleman is lurking around.

When Elise found out this past year, they were expecting little Golden, the Tates decided to do a rather unconventional gender reveal as you have never seen before.  In the most touching, heartwarming, thoughtful announcement ever, the Tates revealed that they were having a baby boy, they vowed to help out another boy. This honestly had me and countless others absolutely floored. Hopefully, this idea will catch on and spark others to do the same.

There honestly is no one like the Tate family.  The Tates are the most amazing people and are true heroes.  They are the embodiment of what it means to value family over everything!  They epitomize kindness and are people who we should all strive to be like!  Their dynamic is so wonderful and so inspiring and they are beacons of light and joy!

New York Giants Receiver Golden Tate Shows Frustration With Early Games

Almost no one is happy with the New York Giants at this point in the season. After Daniel Jones briefly gave the team hope following their 0-2 start and Eli Manning’s benching, the Giants have returned to the ways of last season and have looked less competitive with each game. The team’s loss against the Patriots was forgivable, sure, but the Giants’ performance against the Cardinals, who entered the game as the worst team in their division, didn’t do much to inspire confidence in fans.

The recent string of three straight losses also hasn’t sat well with all of the players on the team – Golden Tate was one of the team’s biggest offseason additions, but according to Tate, he didn’t come here to lose… Which is exactly what the Giants have been doing since his week five return from a four game suspension.

“I didn’t come here to lose, I came here to help get things turned around and help us win a bunch of games,” Tate said on Monday.

Tate did offer a positive take also, however, stating that he doesn’t believe the Giants are too far off in terms of progress to bounce back. “Looking at it, I don’t think we’re light years away from being a really, really, good team. I just think we’re a few plays. Just do a few things a little bit better, and I think we’re in a better situation late in the game.”

One can hope that the Giants only need to do a few things to get better – the Cardinals game seemed to expose some major flaws such as pass blocking and defense against the run, and it looks like fans may just have to wait another year for the team to make offseason adjustments before they can be reliably counted on to win again.

Last season, too, plenty of players were confident in the team making a few tweaks and bouncing back… But that comeback was something that didn’t come, and with the Giants going into week eight with only two wins, the team only seems marginally better than it was last season – perhaps with more potential, but so far, the Giants haven’t done a lot to capitalize on that potential.

Tate has 195 yards in 3 games so far, making him one of the leading receivers for the Giants – but thanks to his suspension and Sterling Shepard’s continual struggles this season with concussions, neither of the Giants’ top receivers have the kind of numbers that they could have at this point in the season if their luck was better.

With Tate showing his competitiveness with statements like this, though, fans can at least put their faith in getting a full effort out of the team’s new edition as the Giants fight to get a win going into the season’s halfway mark.

New York Giants news, 10/19 – Sterling Shepard’s return imminent, Saquon Barkley unleashed

New York Giants, Sterling Shepard

Good Morning, New York Giants Fans!

While New York Giants’ top wide receiver Sterling Shepard will miss Sunday’s game against the Arizona Cardinals, his recovery is going far better than most anticipated initially. After suffering his second concussion of the season against the Minnesota Vikings in week five, Shepard was forced to miss last Thursday’s gamer against the New England Patriots.

Some believed that Shep could miss several months, as numerous concussions in a season can be detrimental to one’s health. The pass-catcher has been sporting yellow non-contact jersey during individual drills in practice, but his designation against the Cardinals is “out.”

However, there’s hope that he will return against the Detroit Lions next week, but that’s still uncertain.

In the absence of Shepard, Golden Tate and Evan Engram will see increased roles. Engram is returning after missing last week due to a sprain MCL. Having the tight end available will be a massive boost for rookie quarterback Daniel Jones, considering how successful they had been together before the injury.

Engram is a massive part of the offense and has been a focal point so far this season. Racking up 373 yards and two scores over five games, he’s on pace for 1,119 yards (includes missed game) and six scores. He would not only be the Giants’ best receiver if those numbers come to fruition, but he’d be an established option for Jones moving forward. In just his third season, the Giants still have control over him for two more seasons, which is a very positive fact.

Saquon Barkley making a return:

Saquon Barkley will be available against Arizona on Sunday, as well as backup, Wayne Gallman. Barkley has been taking his high ankle sprain day-by-day but stated earlier in the week that it would be able to hold up in live-action. The Giants will undoubtedly take the safe route with their star running back, but at 2-4, they have no time to waste.

I anticipate the Giants fully unleashing Barkley, as playing him conservatively would not be worth activating him. If he’s ready to go, we should expect him to get close toa  full workload.

New York Giants could target highly touted wide receiver in 2020 NFL draft

With the New York Giants clinging to a string of hope to climb back into the NFC East playoff race, they find themselves in a peculiar position. Either they continue to lose and land in a top-10 spot in the 2020 NFL draft, or they miraculously burst into the flavorful and exciting team they’re bound to be (we hope).

Rookie quarterback Daniel Jones leads the charge, and gaining back both Saquon Barkley and Evan Engram against the Arizona Cardinals in week seven will undoubtedly help increase his potential for success. But in the off-chance they fall to the Cardinals and journey into unknown Detroit territory, they could be harping on the question — what unit needs to be helped the most?

The New York Giants might not be able to pass up this fantasy:

The 2020 NFL draft holds plenty of talent, and wide receiver might be the most package sealed overnight delivery option. There is talent at the position bleeding from the seams of the upcoming draft, but Alabama star wideout Jerry Jeudy lives in a world of his own.

Replacing Odell Beckham Jr. might not be necessary considering the success the team has had offensively when the starters are healthy, but bringing in an elite player to add another dimension to the offense could be enticing.

General manager Dave Gettleman will likely consider his options on the defensive side of the ball — inside and outside linebacker seem to be the most pressing need.

Jeudy is a 6-foot-1 speed-demon with a stanky leg move that’ll blow your socks off. His 538-yards and six touchdowns through six games are impressive, but the Alabama offense is so potent they don’t feel the need to force the ball his way. Last year, he hauled in 1315-yards and 14 scores through 15 games — he’s on pace to replicate those statistics.

Some scouts believe that Jeudy could be the 1st overall pick next draft, the first wide receiver to achieve that feat since Keyshawn Johnson. Nonetheless, I think that the Giants will stick to improving their defense, but if Jerry managed to slip a few picks to them, it would be incredibly hard to pass up on his skill-set. Especially, considering the potential out the Giants have in Golden Tate’s contract after 2020.

New York Giants: Give Daniel Jones a break, there’s a reason he struggled against the Patriots

New York Giants, Daniel Jones

Facing off against the New England Patriots was always a daunting task for the New York Giants and rookie quarterback, Daniel Jones. Jones finished the night with 15 completions on 31 attempts for 161 yards, one touchdown, and three interceptions. He had a bumpy evening considering the Patriots defense—the number one unit in the league and hadn’t allowed a passing score until Golden Tate’s 64-yard juggling circus catch.

Nobody expected Jones to dominate in this matchup, mainly because he was without his top three playmakers and backup running back. Losing Saquon Barkley, Sterling Shepard, and Evan Engram to injury significantly hurt his chances of success and put him at a disadvantage right out of the gate.

The Giants defense played exceptionally well, though, despite allowing 35 points. They returned a fumble for a touchdown and hung in there until the fourth quarter when they ran out of gas. A windy night in Foxboro is never an easy one, and Jones gained essential experience against one of the best defenses he will likely ever see as a professional football player.

The Giants will now have 1-1/2 weeks to recover/nurse injuries and prepare for the Arizona Cardinals, a far less intimidating opponent. Jones will be heading into this match up with a problematic game under his belt but the confidence and coolness to overcome adversity. He stuck in there until the very end and took some big hits, but he bounced right back up and continued to throw the ball to his only respectable target in Tate.

The biggest weakness for New York Giants rookie, Daniel Jones:

There was no question that Jones would struggle in his rookie season, but his primary deficiency has been his turnover rate. He has eight turnovers in his first four starts—six interceptions and two fumbles. Half of his interceptions came against the Patriots, and he admittedly did not play well.

Head coach Pat Shurmur stated after the game, “obviously, you can’t do that.”

In regards to Jones and is receiving corps on Thursday night, Golden Tate only averaged 1.10 yards of separation on nine targets. Daniel made 48% of his throws into tight windows, the highest rate by any quarterback in the game of the past four seasons. What does this mean? The Giants receivers are not getting away from opposing corners and creating space for the rookie passer to throw the ball. This inevitably increases the turnover rate and incomplete passes.
