New York Yankees 4 game series with the dangerous Athletics, here’s the preview

New York Yankees, Jameson Taillon

The New York Yankees are coming off 11 straight wins and have gone 28-8 since July 17th, escalated them to just 4.5 games behind the AL East-leading Tampa Bay Rays. The Red Sox are 3 games behind the Yankees and the Blue Jays 8 back from the Yanks. The pitiful Baltimore Orioles will lose over 100 games this season.

During this winning period, the Yankees have faced some pretty tough teams. Late in July, they took a series from the Tampa Bay Rays; they beat the White Sox and Seattle Mariners and swept the Boston Red Sox. They also did what they needed to against the lesser Marlins, Royals, and Orioles. In addition, they are coming off a series win of the number 1 Atlanta Braves. Now tonight, they start a four-game weekend set against the dangerous Oakland Athletics.

Earlier in the month, the New York Yankees were fighting for that second wildcard berth with the Athletics. Since then, the Yankees a gotten the first berth, and the Athletics have slipped 1.5 games behind Boston for the second spot. The Yankees are playing their best baseball of the season, and the Athletics not so much, only going 2-8 in their last ten and losing four in a row.  But because the A’s have not been great recently, the Yankees can’t be complacent; the A’s are a very dangerous team at the Oakland Coliseum.

Tonight, August 26, 9:40 pm

Tonight the Yankees will start Jameson Taillon, who has been the Yankee’s best pitcher during their 28-8 winning streak. The righty is 8-4 with an ERA of 3.94 with 121 strikeouts. The Yankees have won all of his last seven starts. He is coming off his 8th win of the season against the Minnesota Twins, although he gave up three runs in 5.1 innings of work. Tonight is the exact same matchup as when the Yankees met up with the A’s on June 18th. The Yankees lost that game, but Taillon only gave up two runs. Wandy Peralta took the loss when he gave up 3 runs in the sixth inning.

Taillon will face one of the Athletics’ best pitchers in righty James Kaprielian who is 7-4 with a 3.25 ERA and 87 strikeouts. Kaprielian is coming off three straight wins, two against the Rangers and the most recent against the Giants. Kappy isn’t going to be happy when he sees Joey Gallo as a Yankee. Gallo has 7 at-bats against him, hitting .571. DJ LeMahieu and Aaron Judge have also hit .333 against the righty.

Friday, August 27, 9:40 pm

Friday night, New York Yankees ace Gerrit Cole will be on the mound for his third start since coming off the Covid list. Cole is  12-6 with a 2.92 ERA and an incredible 191 strikeouts. Cole has the second-most strikeouts in the American League. Cole has not faced the Athletics this season. In the past, only Elvis Andrus has hit well off of Cole.

Cole will face lefty Sean Manaea; he is 8-8 with an ERA of 3.77 and 151 strikeouts. Manaea is coming off two losses in a row. In the Rangers loss, he gave up seven earned runs in 5 innings of work.  The last time he faced the Yankees on June 20, he took the loss. Aaron Judge, DJ LeMahieu, and Gary Sanchez have pretty much had their way with Manaea all going .333 or better off him.

Saturday, August 28, 4:07 pm

The Saturday matinee will pit Nestor Cortes Jr. against Frankie Montas. Cortes has been a blessing for the Yankees since taking over for the injured Corey Kluber. The Yankees won 6 of his 8 starts as he was stretched from being a reliever to a starter. His last win was against the Twins when he threw 104 pitches, getting seven strikeouts giving up only 2 runs. Half of the A’s have never seen Cortes pitch. Only Matt Olsen has been successful off him.

Cortes will face Frankie Montas, 9-9, with an ERA of 3.84 and 161 strikeouts. Only the ex-Ranger Yankees have faced Montas, Rougie Odor, and Joey Gallo have hit well off of him.  Montes is coming off two straight losses, one against the White Sox and one against the Giants.

Sunday, August 29, 7:08 pm

Sunday evening’s game will feature Jordan Montgomery on the mound for the Yankees and Paul Blackburn for the A’s. “Monty” is a lefty that is 5-5 with an ERA of 3.69 and 123 strikeouts. As suggested by his ERA, Monty is a better pitcher than his record. For all Yankee pitchers, he has the misfortune of getting the least run support. The Yankees had won his last four starts, including his most recent won over the Atlanta Braves when he gave up just one run. Josh Lorie and Matt Olson have Montgomery’s number.

Paul Blackburn, a righty, has a limited record of 0-1 with an ERa of 4.09 and 8 strikeouts. Blackburn has only pitched two games for the A’s, losing both of them. Blackburn has an odd baseball history kicking around for 8 years that injuries have marred. He hit the majors 5 years ago with the A’s, but he has only pitched 23 innings in those five years. Only Rougie Odor has seen him pitch; he has a .333 average off him.

Notes: All game times given are Eastern Daylight Time. The Thursday and Friday games are televised on the YES Network and NBCSCA in California. Saturday will be on NBCSCA and in the New York area on WPIX and its affiliates. The Sunday night game will be nationally televised only on ESPN. When the New York Yankees conclude this series they will move on to Los Angeles to play a 3-game series with the Angels, before returning to the Stadium to play the Orioles.

New York Yankees: 3 Major takeaways from Yankees 9th win in a row

yankees, gerrit cole

The New York Yankees won their 9th game in a row yesterday and their 8th series in a row. The final score was the New York Yankees 7 and the Minnesota Twins 1. The Tampa Bay Rays also won their game yesterday, so the Yankees did not advance in the AL, still being 4 games out of first place. The Red Sox lost their game, so the Yankees are now 2.5 games ahead of the Sox and have a stronghold on the first wild card slot.

This is a very different team that is winning games for the Yankees than before the All-Star break. Earlier than they seemed to be a team that was going through the motions and were 10 1/2 games out of first place in the East. Since then, they have picked up a few players at the trade deadline. They are playing like a team with a mission. That mission is to win the AL East.

They are playing with a spark that has seen key players come up from the minors and where new additions are making a difference. They have not only gone 25-8, being the winningest team in the sport but are playing better defense. Before the All-star break, they had 20 stolen bases over 92 games. Since then, they have had 30 stolen bases leading all of baseball.

Gerrit Cole gets his 12th win of the season

Yesterday was Gerrit Cole’s second start since coming off the Covid list. Apparently, he still has some rust, struggling at times, but he made the pitches he needed to get the win. He went 6 innings while getting six strikeouts while scattering only five hits and allowing no runs.

Bullpen gets the job done

After Gerrit Cole pitched six scoreless innings, Lucas Luetge came in and pitched the seventh and eighth allow just one hit, a homer to second baseman Jorge Polanco. Then, in the merry-go-round closer situation, manager Boone sent Albert Abreu to close out the game. Abreu allowed no hits while striking out one Twin. All tolled the Yankee pitchers only allowed 6 Twins hits.

Dreamer Andrew Velazquez gets his first Major League home run

Since being called up, every game has been a dream realized for shortstop Andrew Velazquez who, being a Bronx boy, always dreamed of being a Yankee. Since being brought up with his timely hitting and excellent defense of his position, he has added a spark to the team. But yesterday, he topped it all, getting his first career major league home run. The Yankees secured the ball for him. To add to his delight, his emotional family was in the stands to see his feat.

Velazquez got the only Yankee home run in the game yesterday, but Giancarlo Stanton, Luke Voit, and Tyler Wade all got extra-base hits in the winning effort.

Note: Hurricane Henri has forced the postponement of today’s Yankee game, the final of the four-game set at the Stadium. It will be made up on September 13th.

New York Yankees Recap: Cole rules the Twins for Yankees 9th win in a row

andrew Velazquez, yankees

Today they can win the series after winning the first two games from the Twins. Today they got the series win and the Yankees won their 9th game in a row 7-1.

Rizzo walked to load the bases. Judge with the bases loaded and only one out stood back and watched Wade score on a wild pitch. Judge walked to reload the bases. That was the game for Kenta Maeda. Stanton faced the new Twins pitcher  Edgar Garcia and doubled to left, driving in LeMahieu and Rizzo as Judge moved to third base. Odor still with one out singled, but Judge was called out at home plate for the second out. Voit doubled down the left-field line driving in both Stanton and Odor. Velazquez struck out swinging, but the Yankees picked up five runs in the inning. New York Yankees 6 Twins 0.

At the top of the sixth inning, Arraez flew out to Judge in center. Refsynder struck out for Cole’s sixth strikeout of the game. Jeffers ground out to third to end the half. Simmons ground out Velazquez at short for the final out of the half. At the bottom, Rizzo faced the new Twins pitcher Ralph Garza and walked on four pitches.  Judge flew out to left. Stanton singled, moving Rizzo to third. Florial pinch ran for Stanton. Odor hit a homer into the bullpen, but a last-second time-out was called, negating the home run. He ended up striking out with some unhappy words for the home plate umpire. Voit with men on the corners and two outs flew out to center to end the inning. Yankees 6 Twins 0.

Max Kepler led off the eighth inning by popping out on the first pitch he saw. Then, Polanco homered to left field. Donaldson flew out to Wade in left. Wade ground out softly. LeMahieu ground out to second, but the Yankees tacked on another run. New York Yankees 7 Twins 1.

With last licks on the line for the Twins and closer Albert Abreu on the mound, Rob Refsynder led off the ninth by flying out to left on an excellent running catch by Wade. Jeffers struck out. Nick Gordon popped out to second. The final score was the New York Yankees 7 and the Minnesota Twins 1. The winning pitcher was Gerrit Cole, and the loser was Kenta Maeda. With the win, the Yankees were 20 games above .500 and got their ninth win in a row.

New York Yankees: 4 Takeaways from the Yankees eighth win in a row

Gerrit Cole, New York Yankees

New York Yankees now just 4 games out

The New York Yankees have been playing great ball since the All-Star Break. Since July 17, they have gone 25 and 8 during the period.  The Yankees had won their last seven series culminating with a sweep of the Boston Red Sox when they overtook them for a playoff berth. However, last night the Yankees won their eighth game in a row, and the Tampa Bay Rays lost to the White Sox, moving the Yankees just four games short of a tie in the AL East.

“Nasty” Nestor does it again

Nasty Nestor was nasty again last night. Nestor Cortes had another great performance yesterday, pitching seven innings of 2 run ball while walking two and striking out seven. His ERA is now 2.56 after winning his longest and 2nd win of the season. He had an excellent command of his pitches with a great life.

Nestor Cortes Jr. was primarily a reliever pitching in 15 games since he was brought up on May 30 from the Scranton Wilkes/Barre Rail Riders. With the loss of Corey Kluber, he made his first start on July 9th against the Houston Astros; he pitched 4.1 innings of scoreless ball, impressing the Yankees. Unfortunately, in his next several starts, he, like other Yankees pitchers, didn’t get much run support. During the period, he has been stretched out, pitching seven full innings last night. Nevertheless, he has won his last two games against the White Sox and last night against the Minnesota Twins. His excellent pitching will likely keep him around even when the rotation is back to full force.

Home run again king

Even though the New York Yankees are now winning games without hitting home runs, the team is built around the home run ball. Again last night, the home run was king in the win. Last night slugger Aaron Judge led it off with a 2 run home run in the second inning off Twin’s starter Charlie Barnes. In the seventh inning, Luke Voit contributed his own home run, and in the eighth inning, DJ LeMahieu hit his eighth of the season.

Brett Gardner and Gleyber Torres injury news

The Yankee’s veteran and iron man Brett Gardner was hit in the elbow by a pitch in the fifth inning. Although visibly painful, Gardner stayed in the game until he was relieved by Tyler Wade in the seventh. Manager Boone said Gardner indicated that it really stiffened up, and Boone wanted to get some ice on it and start treatment. However, Boone also said he didn’t expect tests to be done and see how he was today.

Gleyber Torres is on the way back from his jammed finger suffered on August 8th against Seattle. Torres has begun his rehab with an important first step. Yesterday before the game, he took dry swings and fielded ground balls at the Stadium. Boone said that he still had some pain but that the swelling and gone down in this thumb, allowing him to get started on the rehab process. However, Boone declined to give a date for his return into the lineup.

Note:

Tonight Yankee ace Gerrit Cole will take the mound facing the Minnesota Twins’ Kenta Maeda in a 1:05 pm matinee at Yankee Stadium. The game will be televised nationally on FS1.

New York Yankees: Yankees enter a 4-game series with the Twins, here’s the preview

The New York Yankees are coming off a series sweep of the Boston Red Sox and going ahead in the AL East. The Yankees are 8-2 in their last ten games and feeling really good for their chances of taking the AL East division. Although there are still some pieces to come back, the Yankees are mostly healthy and playing their best baseball of the season.

Tonight they enter a four-game series against the Minnesota Twins at the Stadium in the Bronx. They hope to continue their excellent play and secure their ninth series win in a row. Sweeping a four-game series is really difficult, but the Yankee’s confidence is really high right now. The Yankees are second in the AL East, five games behind the Tampa Bay Rays, winning 8 of their last 10. The Twins are second to last in the AL Central but have been playing better recently, going 7-3 in their last 10 games.

Tonight, August 19, 7:05 pm:

Tonight the New York Yankees’ best pitcher over the past month, Jameson Taillon, will take on the Minnesota Twins pitcher John Gant in the first game of a 4 game weekend series. Taillon is 7-4 with an ERA of 3.89 and with 116 strikeouts. Taillon is coming off a win over the Chicago White Sox. The Yankees have won his last six starts in a row. Taillon has only gotten better as the season progresses; he has lowered his ERA from 7.56 to 3.89 over the span.

Taillon will face the Twin’s John Gant that is a righty with a 4-6 record and an ERA of 3.49 with 69 strikeouts. Gant started the season as a starter for the St. Louis Cardinals but didn’t pitch well and was sent to the bullpen. Now with the Twins, he has pitched in seven games, never going more than 2 innings. Over the span, he has one hold. The only Yankee with significant experience with Gant is Anthony Rizzo, who had bat .500 in 12 at-bats against Gant.

Tonight’s game will be televised on the YES Network, Bally Sports North, and nationally on MLBN out of market.

Friday, August 20, 7:05 pm:

Friday night Nestor Cortes Jr. will take the mound for the Yankees with the lowest ERA of any Yankee starter. Nestor is a lefty that is 1-1 with an ERA of 2.55 and 53 strikeouts in six games as a starter. He is coming off a six-inning outing win over the White Sox, giving up just one earned run while striking out seven.

Cortes will face the Twin’s Charlie Barns, who has yet to win the Twins. The lefty is 0-2 with a 4.91 ERA. Barns has one advantage going into this game; no Yankee has ever seen him pitch except video. Barns is coming off a game the Twins won over the Tampa Bay Rays. He gave up one run, striking out three over five innings of work.

Friday night’s game will be televised on YES and Bally Sports North.

Saturday, August 21, 1:05 pm:

The New York Yankees ace Gerrit Cole will get his second start after coming off the Covid list. Cole is 11-6 with an ERA of 3.04 and an incredible 185 strikeouts leading all baseball in strikeouts this season. Cole is coming off a win over the Los Angeles Angels when he went 5.2 innings giving up one home run while striking out 9 Angels.

Cole will face Kenta Maeda in the matinee. Maeda is 6-4 with an ERA of 4.41 and 108 strikeouts. This is Kenta’s 21st game of the season. He is coming off his second win in a row. His last win was over the Tampa Bay Rays when he only allowed 3 hits in his scoreless six-inning effort. Most of the Yankees have not seen Maeda pitch, but Joey Gallo has been successful off of him with a .500 average in six at-bats; one was a home run.

Saturday’s matinee will be televised on Bally Sports North and nationally on FS1.

Sunday, August 22, 1:05 pm:

Sunday, Jordan Montgomery will take the mound for the New York Yankees. “Monty” is a lefty with a 4-5 record and a 3.77 ERA with 121 strikeouts. However, Montgomery pitches better than his record would suggest, as he has gotten nearly no run support in the majority of his games. The Yankees have won 12 of his 20 starts this season. The Yankees have won his last two starts, although he was shaky in his last start against the Red Sox, admitting he was tired after coming off the Covid list.

Montgomery will face the Twin’s, Griffin Jax. Jax is a righty that is 3-3 with a 5.11 ERA. Jax is a reliever that has converted to a starting role as the Twins pitching rotation has struggled. The Yankees faced Jax twice in June, two games that the Yankees won. He is coming off 3 games that the Twin have won. His last outing was a six-inning effort where he gave up 7 hits and one home run against the Indians.

Sunday’s game will be on WPIX, its affiliates, and Bally Sports North.

Note: When the Yankees finish this series, they leave Yankee Stadium and move on to Truist Park for two games with the Atlanta Braves. They will then make a west coast trip to face the Angels and the Athletics.

New York Yankees: 4 Major takeaways from the Yankees win over the Angels

joey gallo, yankees

The New York Yankees should have had a needed day off yesterday but instead had a makeup game with the Los Angeles last night. It was also the return of Gerrit Cole, the Yankee’s ace from the Covid list. At the end of the night, the Yankees and Cole won the game 2-1 going into a 3 game series with the Red Sox today.

After the first inning, the game was mostly a pitcher’s duel with Angels pitcher Jose Suarez matching Cole nearly pitch for pitch. There was only a total of 8 hits between the two teams. Only Aaron Judge had two hits in the game and scored once on Joey Gallo’s homer in the first inning.

Gerrit Cole is still the Yankee ace

After making his return from a bout on the Covid list, Gerrit Cole wanted to put Yankee fans on notice that he is still the ace of the New York Yankees pitching staff. Last night he showed the Yankees that he hasn’t missed a beat. He pitched into the sixth inning, allowing one home run while striking out 9 Angel hitters.

Cole’s last game for the Yankees was on July 29th when he stuck out 10. Going into last night’s game, few thought after the long layoff with the coronavirus that Cole might not go more than 60 pitches in his first game back, but he threw that many strikes in his 90 pitch night. Fletcher popped out to short. Upton reached on a bobbled play by Odor at third in the sixth inning, and Aaron Boone felt that was enough for Cole. In the first, Cole got his 11th win of the season, aided by Joey Gallo’s 112 mph two-run homer.

Yankees marvelous bullpen shines

In the sixth inning, with one more out to get, Gerrit Cole’s night was over. In a gutsy move, Boone called in Zack Britton, who had removed himself from a closer role after pitching so badly. Britton did his job and struck out Jared Walsh to end the inning scoreless. Albert Abreu was next pitching 1.2 innings of hitless ball. But when Shohei Ohtani came to the plate, Boone chose the young Joely Rodriguez to face the Angels MVP. J-Rod did nothing less than strike him out on four pitches for his 11th hold of the season.

Chad Green came in in the top of the ninth to secure the win for the New York Yankees. He allowed a hit, got a ground ball out, and stuck out two in the effort that won the game for the Yankees and gave him his fourth save of the season. Manager Aaron Boone has to be given credit for how he has handled the bullpen recently.

Joey Gallo getting the Yankee love

For Yankee fans, it’s been a long time since we heard that call “Derek Jeter” Derek Jeter echo through the crowds. But, last night, we heard a new chant, that of “Joey Gallo-Joey Gallo” when Gallo was at the plate in the third inning. It appears the Yankee faithful have accepted Gallo and wanted to show him some love after hitting a two-run homer in the first inning, supplying the Yankees with their only two runs of the game.

It should be noted that Joey Gallo strikes out a lot, an awful lot. But, if he can hit a homer in every four games the Yankees will gladly accept that. So far in his short time with the Yankees, he has already had a two-homer night.

The Yankees start a 3 game series with the Red Sox today!

Today will see another day-night doubleheader for the Yankees as they face their rival Boston Red Sox. It will also mark the return from the Covid list for Jordan Montgomery. The first game at 1:05 pm will feature Tanner Houck for the Red Sox facing Montgomery. The 7:05 pm installment will have Yankee sensation prospect Luis Gil on the mound facing the Red Sox’s Nathan Eovaldi.

The day game will be telecast on the YES Network, NESN, and MLBN out of market. The night game will be on WPIX and its affiliates, NESN, and MLBN out of market.

New York Yankees Recap: Gerrit Cole ekes out a win against the Angels

yankees, gerrit cole

Today was supposed to be a much-needed day off for the New York Yankees, but they played a makeup game with the Los Angeles Angels tonight. The game was made necessary due to a rainout when they last met in June at the Stadium.  The Angels were 12 1/2 out in the AL West, and the Yankees were 5.5 games out in the AL East; every game is important, and the Yankees would try for another gutsy win tonight with Gerrit Cole making his first start off the Covid list. He was facing the Angels Jose Suarez. It was another one-run win for the Yankees. The final score was Yankees 2 and the Angels 1.

Cole faced Shohei Ohtani in the first inning, who stuck out on a Cole 99mph fastball. David Fletcher struck out looking. Justin Upton hit a home run to the left-field stands to put the Angels on the board first. Jared Walsh struck out. Cole got three strikeouts in the inning but also gave up a run. The bottom was led off by DJ LeMahieu, who flew out to the far right. Aaron Judge singled to right. Joey Gallo hit a two-run homer to the second deck right-field stands for the Yankee lead. Giancarlo Stanton went down for the second out of the inning. Luke Voit got a single right up the middle. Rougie Odor ground out to first on a broken bat. New York Yankees 2 Angels 1.

The second inning was led off by Phil Gosselin, who singled to short. Jose Iglesias tapped back to Cole for the first out. Brandon Marsh went down looking. Max Stassi struck out swinging for five strikeouts for Cole in two innings. At the bottom, Kyle Higashioka struck out swinging. Jonathan Davis was out on an infield dribble. Andrew Velaquez ground out to short. Yankees 2 Angels 1.

Jo Adell led off the third inning by striking out for Cole’s 6th. Ohtani flew out to Stanton in right. Fletcher ground out on a flip play to Cole at first. Shohei Ohtani led off the sixth inning and flew out to Stanton on the warning track. Fletcher popped out to short. Upton reached on a bobbled play by Odor at third, And that was the evening for Cole. Walsh faced the new Yankee pitcher Zack Britton and struck out, making Boone’s decision to bring Britton in the right one. At the bottom, LeMahieu walked on four pitches. Judge walked on four pitches. With two on and no outs, Gallo walked the bases loaded, and that was the night for Suarez. Stanton faced the new Angel pitcher Steve Cishek and went down on strikes to boos from the Yankee faithful. Voit with three on and one out hit into an inning-ending double play, blowing a huge opportunity for the Yankees. Yankees 2 Angels 1.

Odor in the bottom walked on four pitches. Higashioka flew out to far center. Davis was called out on strikes. Velasquez hitting from the left side, flew out to center field. Yankees 2 Angels 1.

New York Yankees: Two teams, four games, here’s the preview

Gerrit Cole, New York Yankees

Today was supposed to be a much-needed day off for the New York Yankees, but today they will play a makeup game with the Los Angeles Angels. The game was made necessary due to a rainout when they last met in June at the Stadium. Tomorrow the Yankees will start a three-game series with the Boston Red Sox. The Angels are 12 1/2 out in the AL West, and the Yankees are 5.5 games out in the AL East; every game is important, but if the Yankees can sweep the Red Sox, they will take over second place in the East division.

Tonight, August 16, 7:05 pm:

Tonight, at Yankee Stadium, we will see the return off the Covid list of Yankee ace Gerrit Cole. Cole had not pitched since July 29th, when he lost to the Tampa Bay Rays. While on the Covid list, although he hasn’t pitched, he could throw the ball at home during his time away. This season he is 10-6  with a 3.11 ERA and an incredible 176 strikeouts. The Yankees hope Cole will return to form in tonight’s game.

Cole will be facing the Angels Jose Suarez, a lefty that is 5-5 with a 3.90 ERA for the Angels in 15 games. He is coming off a loss on the 10th against the Toronto Blue Jays. Suarez typically gives up a lot of run and home runs as well. The Angels have lost 8 of his starts. DJ LeMahieu and Giancarlo Stanton have hit well off Suarez.

Tuesday, August 17, 1:05 pm., game one:

On Tuesday, the first game of a day-night doubleheader will feature pitching sensation prospect Luis Gil on the mound for the Yankees. The righty is 1-0 with a Zero ERA and 14 strikeouts in two starts against the Orioles and Mariners. Gil has been the replacement for Gerrit Cole while he was on the Covid list. He has given the Yankees more than they could have asked for and now earns another start.

The Red Sox has not announced a starter for the game. The game will be televised on the YES Network, NESN, and MLBN out of market.

Tuesday, August 17, 7:05 pm., game two:

The night installment of the doubleheader will see the return of Jordan Montgomery from the Covid list. The lefty is 4-5 with an ERA of 3.69 and 115 strikeouts. “Monty” pitches much better than the record would suggest. He has gotten very little run support in most of his games. The Yankees hope the rest will allow Montgomery to have a good start tomorrow night. He is coming off of two wins, one against the Rays and one against the Marlins.

The Red Sox have not announced a starter for this game either. The game will be televised by WPIX and its affiliates in the New York area, NESN, and MLBN out of market.

Wednesday, August 18, 7:05 pm:

In this game, the tables are turned on the Red Sox as they have announced their starter, but the Yankees haven’t. This is largely because the Yankees don’t have a reliable starter for the game. It would normally be Andrew Heaney’s start, but that will likely not be the case with how poorly he has pitched. So instead, it could end up being a bullpen game started by either Lucas Luetge or Wandy Peralta. For both, it would be their second start.

The Red Sox will start Nick Pivetta, one of their best starters. He is a righty with a 9-5 record, an ERA of 4.20, and 139 strikeouts. He is coming off a six-inning outing win against the Baltimore Orioles. The Yankees have not faced Pivetta this season. DJ LeMahieu and Giancarlo Stanton have both hit well off of Pivetta in the past. Wednesday night’s game will be nationally televised on ESPN. It will also be on the YES Network and NESN.

New York Yankees: All the news plus two more with the White Sox

New York Yankees, Luis Severino

Thursday night, the long-awaited Field of Dreams game took place in Dyersville, Iowa. The New York Yankees faced the Chicago White Sox in that epic game. I predicted that the Yankees would lose that game because both the pitching and lineup stats comparison said so. What I didn’t predict was that it would be a ninth-inning heartbreaking loss.

Nevertheless, disregarding the outcome, it was a wonderful game in a beautiful iconic setting in the cornfields of Iowa that will not be soon forgotten by any of the players who played in it or those in the stands or watching television. The Yankees still have two more games against the White Sox that will be played on the south side of Chicago.

Preview of two more with the White Sox

The New York Yankees may have lost the Field of Dreams game but still have a chance to take the series from the Chicago White Sox with the remaining two games at Guaranteed Field over the weekend.

Tonight, August 14, 7:10 pm:

Tonight in Chicago, James Taillon will take the mound for the Yankees vs. the White Sox Dylan Cease. Taillon is 7-4 ERA 3.82; Cease is 9-6 ERA 3.99 with an impressing 159 strikeouts.  Aaron Judge, Brett Gardner, and Luke Voit have all hit well off Cease when they faced him earlier in the season. Meanwhile, Cesar Hernandez has Taillon’s number hitting .571 off him in seven at-bats. Tonight’s game will be on the YES Network and NBCSCH.

Sunday, August 15, 2:10 pm:

Sunday will see Nestor Cortes Jr.0-1 ERA 2.40, on the mound for the Yankees, and Lucas Giolito 9-8 ERA 3.81, the White Sox ace for the Sox. Nestor Cortes Jr. has been great for the Yankees, although he has not gotten his first win since taking over for Corey Kluber. The Yankees have won 5 of his 7 starts. Giolito is listed as the Sox ace; he is their third-best pitcher this season. The Sunday matinee will be on WPIX and its affiliates in the New York area and NBCSCH in Chicago. The game will also be televised on TBS out of market.

Andrew Heaney’s job may be in jeopardy

Since acquiring him, Andrew Heaney, who has not pitched well for the New York Yankees, he was the only pitcher available to pitch the Field of Dreams game, and he failed miserably, giving up seven earned runs in the game in only five innings.

With his 5.45 ERA, Heaney had to face the White Sox’s best pitcher, Lance Lynn, with his 2.26 ERA and not having allowed more than three runs in any game in July and August. Heaney gave up five runs in the first four innings, which would usually be the end for a starting pitcher, but manager Boone brought him out again in the fifth inning to save the already overworked bullpen for the rest of the series, he failed to do that.

Heaney has not had a good outing yet for the Yankees, and now his starting job may be in jeopardy. He has given up 15 earned runs and 8 home runs in his three starts for the New York Yankees.

Help is on the way

This may very well be an exciting week for the Yankees. The Yankees will see the return of Anthony Rizzo to the lineup sometime this week. Also, on the good news front, Gerrit Cole and Jordan Montgomery threw bullpen sessions in Chicago yesterday, and Aaron Boone said that all went well. With the Yankees so short on pitchers, it could mean that they will both pitch in the Red Sox series at Yankees Stadium next week.

Luis Severino setback?

The long-awaited return, two years in the making, was just a week or one more rehab game away for Luis Severino, but now that may not happen. He was set to have a rehab game on Friday, but it didn’t take place. Reportedly Scranton Wilkes/Barre manager Doug Davis told reporters on hand that Severino “didn’t feel right” in warmups and was scratched just before the game.

Davis also told reporters he didn’t know the issue with Severino, but it’s disappointing news for the New York Yankees that so badly need pitching help. If there is further information on Severino, you will find it on EmpireSportsMedia.com.

Kluber struggles in the first rehab start

The New York Yankees have been eagerly awaiting the return of Corey Kluber that pitched a no-hitter for the Yankees earlier in the season. On his way back, he pitched for Double-A Somerset on Thursday night. It was Kluber’s first outing since late May. Unfortunately, it didn’t go well; he looked rusty and only made it through 1.1 innings before being removed from the game.

The Yankees right-hander, pitching for Double-A Somerset, threw just 20 strikes on 45 pitches against the Portland Sea Dogs. He walked four and hit an additional two batters on his way to allowing five earned runs. Such a poor start is not that surprising for a pitcher looking to find his command after not pitching in over two months.

Kluber averaged over seven innings per start over his five outings before the May 25 injury and recorded a 1.78 ERA over that span. It now appears he will have another two rehab assignments before an early September return.

Frazier doubled; will he be welcomed back?

Both Clint Frazier and the New York Yankees have been mysteriously quiet about Frazier and his hard-to-explain dizziness and vision problems. But now, out of nowhere, He had a successful game with Tampa and was quickly promoted to Somerset.

First, it was the slugger’s live BP that came as a big surprise. Then, on Tuesday, he took the next step by being announced just one-half hour before the Somerset game; he hit a double in the game and scored once. So now the question is, is he ready to return to the Yankees, and will he be welcomed?

While he has been away from the Yankees, he played his last game on June 30th; the Yankees have tried several outfielders, including Greg Allen, Ryan LaMaree, Trey Amburgey, and Jonathan Davis, among others. They also acquired one of the best outfielders out there in Joey Gallo.

Although not excellent in the outfield, Frazier has been good. However, his hitting has not. Will the Yankees want his dead bat in the lineup as they push for a postseason appearance? The New York Yankees have their outfield options.
