What happened between the UFC and Francis Ngannou?

Francis Ngannou

Yesterday we all saw some shocking news in the world of mixed martial arts. We learned that UFC 265 in August will be headlined by an interim title fight between top contenders Derrick Lewis (25-7, 1 NC) and Ciryl Gane (9-0).

The two men will battle it out in Houston on August 7th. However, this move was incredibly puzzling to say the least. It’s puzzling due to the fact that Francis Ngannou (16-3) just became the undisputed heavyweight champion at the end of March.

After Ngannou became the champion, he spent a considerable amount of time in Africa to celebrate. Ngannou recently returned to the United States and resumed training in preparation for his first title defense.

For the last month or so, the UFC has been trying hard to book Ngannou against Derrick Lewis for the August PPV. However, with Ngannou’s travel schedule, he told the UFC that he wouldn’t be ready by the beginning of August.

The promotion then came back to Ngannou and asked about UFC 266 in September. Ngannou and his representatives accepted the fight for the end of September and moved forward with their preparations. However, everything changed yesterday.

UFC’s Change of Plans

The UFC had been moving forward with the September fight, but Ciryl Gane’s performance over the weekend made them hedge. After seeing Gane remain perfect by defeating Alexander Volkov, the promotion tried to use it for leverage to get Ngannou to fight in August.

Ngannou’s camp remained firm in their stance that he would defend the title in September, but not at the beginning of August. The UFC ultimately decided to pull the plug on Ngannou all together and booked the interim title fight.

In the history of the promotion, this is the quickest that they’ve ever instituted an interim title. It’s also incredibly interesting that it was made in the heavyweight division considering the title has been defended on average once a year over the past few years.

So now, the UFC’s superstar heavyweight champion is sidelined. This move makes no sense and to me the promotion just cut their nose off to spite their face.

BREAKING: UFC books interim heavyweight title fight between Derrick Lewis and Ciryl Gane

Massive breaking news this afternoon involving the UFC‘s heavyweight division. Dana White told ESPN’s Brett Okamoto that the promotion is moving forward with an interim heavyweight title fight between Derrick Lewis (25-7, 1 NC) and Ciryl Gane (9-0).

The fight will headline UFC 265 on August 7th which will take place in Houston, Texas. This is a massive shot as Francis Ngannou (16-3) just became the undisputed heavyweight champion a few months ago.

The promotion had been trying to book Ngannou against Derrick Lewis for August, but Ngannou wasn’t ready. The latest word was that the UFC was going to book the heavyweight title fight for September, but everything changed on a dime.

Over the weekend at UFC Vegas 30, Ciryl Gane dominated Alexander Volkov to remain undefeated. After witnessing his performance, the UFC decided to move Gane up the ladder for an interim title fight against Lewis.

The manager for the UFC heavyweight champion was completely stunned by the news. Ngannou’s reps told Okamoto, “This comes as a complete shock. To make an interim title so soon, if you look at the history of this division, it comes as a surprise. We hope to get clarity and figure out something with the UFC soon.”

UFC’s odd decision

I honestly don’t understand the UFC’s logic here at all. By all accounts, Ngannou was going to be ready to defend his title in September. Over the last few years, the heavyweight title has been defended on average once per year.

Ngannou just won the title at the end of March. To make an interim title so soon is absolutely insane to me. Nevertheless, the UFC is moving forward and Ciryl Gane will battle Derrick Lewis in his backyard for the heavyweight title.

With this news, we likely won’t see Francis Ngannou against until the end of the year. Well, maybe the UFC will finally book Ngannou against Jon Jones (26-1, 1 NC) for the undisputed title then have the winners face off. Who knows, but I don’t think anyone saw this coming.

UFC Vegas 30 Preview: Ciryl Gane – Alexander Volkov

Ciryl Gane UFC

Tomorrow night in the main event of UFC Vegas 30, we will see top five heavyweights battle it out. Top contenders Ciryl Gane (8-0) and Alexander Volkov (33-8) are looking to put themselves directly into title contention tomorrow night.

Ciryl Gane made his UFC debut back in 2019 in what was just his fourth professional fight. Obviously you can see by his record that he’s been perfect inside the octagon. The UFC has brought him along at a gradual pace and now he’s fighting the elites of the heavyweight division.

In his last two fights, Gane has defeated former UFC champion Junior Dos Santos and fellow top contender Jairzinho Rozenstruik. If Gane can defeat Volkov at UFC Vegas 30, he might only be a win away from a shot at the heavyweight title.

Alexander Volkov made his UFC debut back in 2016 and started out 4-0. Volkov knocked out former heavyweight champion Fabricio Werdum in a main event to get a shot against Derrick Lewis. The matchup was looked at as a potential title eliminator.

Volkov dominated the entire fight, but was caught by the massive power of The Black Beast in the final seconds. Since that loss, Volkov has gone 3-1 in the UFC. A win tomorrow night over the undefeated Gane would put him in an excellent position to get that elusive title shot.

UFC Vegas 30

I’m incredibly excited and intrigued by this main event at UFC Vegas 30. On one hand you have the great striking and skills of Ciryl Gane. The former professional kickboxer has shown off his great technique inside the octagon.

However, it’s his movement that impresses me the most. His lateral movement is of someone from a lower weight class. His overall knowledge of the game and his movement could cause Volkov issues tomorrow night at UFC Vegas 30.

On the other hand, Alexander Volkov looks like he’s really turning the page. Over his last couple of fights, he looks like a completely different fighter. I love his aggressiveness and how he pushes forward with a combination of volume and power.

He will give Gane the toughest test of his UFC career. I’ve really gone back-and-forth over this prediction. I think the fight is going to be razor close, but I see Volkov getting the nod here. Ultimately, it will come down to significant shots and I think Volkov lands enough to sway the judges.

Prediction: Alexander Volkov by Split Decision

UFC books headliner between Ciryl Gane and Alexander Volkov

Ciryl Gane UFC

The UFC has finalized a massive matchup in the heavyweight division. ESPN’s Brett Okamoto was the first to report today that the promotion has finalized a matchup between the undefeated Ciryl Gane (8-0) and Alexander Volkov (33-8).

The fight will headline a UFC Fight Night on June 26th. For Ciryl Gane, this matchup on June 26th will be his next step up in competition. The French heavyweight has been slowly climbing the ladder since his UFC debut in 2019.

Last December, Gane knocked out former heavyweight champion, Junior Dos Santos. After that knockout win, the UFC gave him a quick turnaround to headline a card in February against Jairzinho Rozenstruik.

The matchup was being built up as a matchup between two knockout artist in the heavyweight division. However, the fight failed to live up to expectations and neither man landed any massive shots during the fight.

That said, the fight was still a domination from Ciryl Gane who won all five rounds on all three scorecards. Gane is now 5-0 in the UFC and could be one win away from a title shot.

UFC title eliminator?

Alexander Volkov looked better than ever in his last outing. Just a couple of weeks before Gane defeated Rozenstruik, Volkov took on Alistair Overeem in the main event of a fight night.

Unlike the Gane fight, this one didn’t go the distance. Volkov completely picked apart Overeem on his way to picking up his second straight UFC win. A few years ago, Volkov was only one win away from a title shot.

Well, in reality, he was seconds away from a title shot when he was fighting Derrick Lewis. However, The Black Beast landed a massive knockout shot in the final seconds to earn himself a shot at the UFC heavyweight title.

Now, Volkov appears to be in a similar position. He’s once again perhaps just a win away from earning himself a shot at the title. This should be a fantastic matchup on June 26th and a big one for the heavyweight division.

State of the UFC’s heavyweight division

MMA, Stipe Miocic

The last month has been incredibly busy for the UFC‘s heavyweight division. In the month of February alone, three fight nights were headlined by heavyweight clashes that shook up the heavyweight division.

However, outside of fighting, we also saw some big news come in last night regarding the heavyweights. The UFC released former heavyweight champion, Junior Dos Santos (21-9) and former title challenger, Alistair Overeem (47-19, 1 NC).

Both men were ranked inside the top 12 at heavyweight so the news is shaking up the rankings a bit. The release of JDS wasn’t surprising, but Overeem had just headlined UFC Vegas 18 against Alexander Volkov (33-8).

Volkov looked better than ever and stopped Overeem in the second round. However, Overeem had won two in a row prior so the decision to release was rather interesting. Nevertheless, Overeem is no longer with the promotion.

After Volkov’s big win, we saw UFC Vegas 19 which was headlined by Derrick Lewis (25-7, 1 NC) and Curtis Blaydes (14-3, 1 NC). Both of these men were looking to stake their claim as a top contender and that’s exactly what Derrick Lewis did.

After Curtis Blaydes easily won the first round, Lewis put him to sleep in the second round. Lewis is now tied for the most knockouts in UFC history and he’s ranked second in the heavyweight division.

Last weekend at UFC Vegas 20, we saw the conclusion of the heavyweight main events. Ciryl Gane (8-0) took on Jairzinho Rozenstruik (11-2). It was the only fight that went the distance and it lacked for action, but Ciryl Gane dominated his way into the top five at heavyweight.

State of the UFC’s heavyweight division

After all of these fight nights, there is a big more clarity in the heavyweight division. At the end of this month at UFC 260, Stipe Miocic (20-3) will take on Francis Ngannou (15-3) for the heavyweight championship in a rematch.

After this fight, we already know what is next. Regardless of the outcome, Jon Jones (26-1, 1 NC) is getting the next crack at the heavyweight title. Jones vacated his light heavyweight championship to pursue the heavyweight title and he’s getting an immediate title shot.

I would say that whoever loses the title fight in March will likely face Derrick Lewis next. Lewis would be the number one contender if Jon Jones wasn’t moving up. Given where Stipe and Francis both stand, the UFC will likely let Lewis fight the winner after UFC 260.

With that, I believe that Volkov will likely be fighting Ciryl Gane next. Both are now ranked inside the top five and a win for either man would probably put them just one more win away from a title shot.

By the process of elimination, we could also see Curtis Blaydes and Rozenstruik fight next. Both are coming off of a loss, but both are still ranked inside the top six. The top of the heavyweight division is looking very exciting and I can’t wait to see how 2021 plays out for the big boys in the UFC.

What’s next for Jairzinho Rozenstruik after UFC Vegas 20 loss?

This past Saturday at UFC Vegas 20, we saw a battle of top ten heavyweights in the main event. Jairzinho Rozenstruik (11-2) was tasked in trying to derail the hype train of the undefeated, Ciryl Gane (8-0).

Rozenstruik is one of the most powerful strikers in all of the UFC. Bigi Boy has over 70 professional kickboxing victories and he’s stormed through all competition inside the octagon outside of Francis Ngannou.

Both of these contenders were coming off of victories against former heavyweight champion, Junior Dos Santos. The fight was being built up as a battle of finishers and many didn’t think this fight would go the distance.

However, there was a lack of action on Saturday night and ultimately many were disappointed with UFC Vegas 20‘s main event. The main issue with the main event was the lack of aggressiveness from Rozenstruik.

Gane had a good game plan and was racking up points on the outside. While nothing had a ton of steam on it, Gane was popping Rozenstruik with jabs and kicks all night. Rozenstruik appeared to be waiting for one big knockout shot, however, there was no urgency.

Heading into the fifth round, Rozenstruik needed a finish to win. He had lost all four rounds on all three scorecards. When the final round started, there was still no urgency from Rozenstruik and Gane walked to a decision win. Bigi Boy is now 1-2 in his last three in the UFC.

What’s next after UFC Vegas 20?

While Rozenstruik didn’t get finished at UFC Vegas 20, his stock took a major hit. Rozenstruik appeared to be fighting with a similar strategy that Derrick Lewis fought Curtis Blaydes with, however, he wasn’t throwing when he had openings.

Instead, he seemed content with staying on the outside while he was getting outpointed by Gane. So what does the UFC do with Bigi Boy after this performance? Well, I think there are a couple of options for Rozenstruik.

A matchup I actually like is the rematch with Alistair Overeem (47-19,1 NC). The two men fought in late 2019 and Overeem was winning the entire fight. However, in the last ten seconds, Rozenstruik landed a bomb that gave him the knockout victory.

I believe a lot of people would want to see the rematch. I think another fun matchup could be Rozenstruik against Walt Harris (13-9, 1 NC). The Big Ticket has lost a couple in a row, but he always brings the fight to his opponent. I believe either of these matchups would be a fun next step for Jairzinho Rozenstruik.

What’s next for Ciryl Gane after his win at UFC Vegas 20?

Ciryl Gane UFC

This past Saturday at UFC Vegas 20, the heavyweights took center stage and were in the main event. Undefeated prospect, Ciryl Gane (8-0), took on Jairzinho Rozenstruik (11-2). The matchup between these two looked to be a pivotal matchup for the UFC’s heavyweight division.

Both Gane and Rozenstruik were being built up as finishers heading into this contest. Rozenstruik had the one punch knockout power while Gane had a repertoire that included elite striking and great submissions for a heavyweight.

After the Derek Lewis knockout at UFC Vegas 19, there was high expectations for this matchup. Well, it didn’t turn out to be the firefight that some people were expecting. However, it was incredibly one-sided.

It was apparent early on what the strategy was for both men. Rozenstruik was looking for one big shot to end the night while Gane was staying light-footed and striking from the outside. While Gane’s performance wasn’t flashy, it was incredibly effective.

Rozenstruik struggled to get any offense off during the five rounds. Gane stayed on the outside and just popped Bigi Boy with jabs and kicks. In the end, UFC Vegas 20 was a disappointment if you wanted to see a finish. However, if you’re a fan of Ciryl Gane, you had to enjoy his dominance.

What’s next after UFC Vegas 20?

When the scorecards were read at UFC Vegas 20, all three judges scored the contest 50-45 for Ciryl Gane. The French heavyweight stayed unbeaten and he is bound to be in the top four of the rankings at heavyweight when they come out tomorrow.

Dana White wasn’t thrilled with the performance, but at the end of the day, a dominant win is a dominant win. Gane did what he had to do and it was a complete shutout. You can’t fault the man for that.

So what will the UFC do with Ciryl Gane after this victory? Well, I think the perfect opponent for Gane would be the winner of the UFC Vegas 18 headliner. Alexander Volkov (33-8) should be next for Gane.

When the rankings come out tomorrow, both of these men should be ranked inside the top five. Both carry winning streaks and both probably need another win or two before they earn themselves a UFC title shot. I believe this is the path the promotion should go, and I believe they ultimately will go this route.

Ciryl Gane shuts out Jairzinho Rozenstruik at UFC Vegas 20

Ciryl Gane UFC

In the main event at UFC Vegas 20 we saw a battle between two top seven heavyweights. Jairzinho Rozenstruik (11-1) took on Ciryl Gane (7-0) and the winner of this matchup would put themselves in excellent position in the heavyweight division.

In his brief UFC career, there haven’t been many heavyweights as impressive as Ciryl Gane. Gane is 4-0 with three finishes in his career with the promotion, but it’s been the way he’s earned those stoppages that’s been impressive.

While Gane has an excellent striking pedigree, he has two submissions in his UFC career thus far. In fact, half of his wins that he’s finished have come via submission. That well-rounded game was something he was going to need in taking on a striker like Rozenstruik.

Jairzinho Rozenstruik has over seventy wins as a professional kickboxer and he’s shown off his finishing ability inside the UFC. All five of his wins inside the octagon have come via knockout. Only one out of his eleven victories has gone to the judges.

Rozenstruik looked like he was on the verge of a title shot in early 2020. However, he suffered a quick knockout loss to Francis Ngannou. Rozenstruik bounced back well at UFC 252 with a win over Junior Dos Santos and he was looking to continue that momentum this evening.

Halfway through the round and Rozenstruik needs to go. Gane has him pressured against the fence and he lands two more jabs. Big leg kick lands lands for Gane and Rozenstruik tries to blitz forward.

However, Gane used the momentum to get the clinch and push Rozenstruik against the fence. One minute left in the round and Gane is trying hard for a takedown. He briefly gets Rozenstruik down. However, Rozenstruik bounced right back up.

20 seconds left in the round and it’s do-or-die time for Bigi Boy. However, Rozenstruik can’t get Gane off of him at all. The bell sounds and this should be a shutout. Massive win at UFC Vegas 20 for Ciryl Gane.

Ciryl Gane def. Jairzinho Rozenstruik by Unanimous Decision (50-45, 50-45, 50-45)

UFC Vegas 20 Preview: Jairzinho Rozenstruik – Ciryl Gane

Tomorrow night at UFC Vegas 20, the heavyweights will once again take the center stage. In the main event of the evening, we will see a clash of strikers as Jairzinho Rozenstruik (11-1) takes on the undefeated prospect, Ciryl Gane (7-0).

Both men will make the walk tomorrow ranked inside of the top seven of the UFC‘s heavyweight division. For Ciryl Gane, this fight marks a big step up in competition. Gane will make his fifth UFC appearance and so far it’s been flawless.

In his last fight, Gane was able to stop former champion, Junior Dos Santos. Prior to that, he’s had impressive victories over Raphael Pessoa, Don’Tale Mayes, and Tanner Boser. While known for his striking background, it’s been Gane’s overall MMA game that has impressed me so far.

That said, he has a very tall mountain to climb at UFC Vegas 20. Entering 2020, there was a lot of buzz behind “Bigi Boy” Jairzinho Rozenstruik. That buzz was completely warranted when you considered what Rozenstruik had done in the division.

Rozenstruik made his debut with the promotion back in 2019. During 2019. Rozenstruik had four knockout victories including a last second knockout over Alistair Overeem. For his efforts, the UFC gave him Francis Ngannou.

That is where things went off the tracks a bit. Rozenstruik was blitzed by Ngannou and got knocked out in 20 seconds for his first professional loss. However, he bounced back nicely at UFC 252 with a knockout win over Junior Dos Santos.

UFC Vegas 20 Prediction

I am both incredibly excited for as well as intrigued by this heavyweight matchup. Both men have professional striking backgrounds, but they use their striking in such different ways. Rozenstruik is very calculated and powerful when he strikes. Nothing seems incredibly urgent.

Gane is someone who moves like a man much lighter than he actually is. While he doesn’t have the power of Rozenstruik, Gane has great speed and has the ability to get in and out of range before the big shots land.

One thing I really like about Ciryl Gane is his ability to mix it up. We’ve seen him go for and land takedowns in the UFC. His first two wins with the promotion were by submission. His overall game seems much more advanced to me than Rozenstruik’s.

Again, Rozenstruik is going to have the power advantage. We’ve seen him behind in fights and score a late knockout before. However, I think that’s going to be his only way of winning this one. I’m buying into the Gane hype and I believe he gets it done tomorrow. It’ll either be a submission or decision at UFC Vegas 20.

Prediction: Ciryl Gane by decision

After his big win at UFC Vegas 18, what’s next for Alexander Volkov?

Alexander Volkov, UFC

This past weekend at UFC Vegas 18, Alexander Volkov (33-8) went head-to-head with Alistair Overeem (47-19, 1 NC). The winner of this matchup was going to be in a very good position inside the top five moving forward.

I was expecting this fight to be close, but in reality, it was anything but. As soon as the bell sounded at UFC Vegas 18, Alexander Volkov was in control. His strikes were extremely crisp and he never gave Overeem any time to get comfortable inside the octagon.

There were several times where Volkov pinned Overeem against the fence and peppered him with shots. In the second round, Volkov really started to do some serious damage. A huge 1-2 forced Overeem to turn away and that’s when Volkov really poured it on.

A few more devastating combinations followed and Overeem went crashing to the floor which caused the referee to stop it. Alexander Volkov didn’t just win at UFC Vegas 18, he made a huge statement.

What’s next after UFC Vegas 18?

Following the big win at UFC Vegas 18, there are a couple of options for Alexander Volkov. Both of the options I have in mind look at the two heavyweight main events that are coming up later this month.

Derrick Lewis and Curtis Blaydes are scheduled to headline on 2/20 while Jairzinho Rozenstruik and Ciryl Gane are headlining on 2/27. If I was the match maker for the UFC, I would give Volkov the winner of one of these matchups.

The only fight I would consider giving him the loser in would be the Lewis and Blaydes matchup. Volkov was seconds away from a UFC title shot a few years ago before Derrick Lewis (24-7, 1 NC) knocked him out.

Curtis Blaydes (14-2, 1 NC) grinded out a decision win against Volkov back in 2020. Blaydes and Lewis are the only two men to have defeated Volkov in the UFC. So if you were going to give him a loser of those matchups, that’s the fight to do it.

Personally, I love Volkov against the winner of the Gane/Rozenstruik matchup. In my ideal world, that is what I would do next. Exciting times and a bunch of fun matchups are ahead in the UFC’s heavyweight division.
