New York Yankees: A-Rod giving baseball classes for teens on Instagram, watch!

New York Yankees, Alex Rodriguez

Yankee great A-Rod adds to online learning today at 5 pm

The New York Yankees want to do their part regarding the coronavirus.  They are taking steps to keep players safe and have let players go wherever they feel the safest. As children around the country start taking their classes online as schools are closing everywhere due to the coronavirus, Alex Rodriguez is teaching baseball on Instagram.  You can tune in today at 5 pm to watch the broadcast that is directed at teens but will be interesting for all fans of baseball.

Rodriguez, the former shortstop and 3rd baseman for the Yankees, is one of the best baseball players of the past two decades, and now he is sharing some of his knowledge with teens and others in a video broadcast on Instagram.  Rodriguez, in his career the Seattle Mariners, Texas Rangers, and the New York Yankees amassed over 3,100 hits, 696 home runs while maintaining a .295 batting average and driving in almost 2,100 runs in his incredible 22-year career.

For Yankee game starved fans, this may be just the thing to help you get through this time of great concern and help you with the second separation from baseball in just six months.  Another outlet to quench your thirst for baseball is the YES Network. The Network announced yesterday that they would be delving into the Yankee Classics archive to produce more Yankee Classics on the network in absence of regular baseball games.  In addition to all the Classics, Yankeeogrpahy, Yankee Magazine, and Homegrown are other interesting broadcasts for Yankee fans.

For those that are interested in the Rodriguez class or have children or friends that may be interested, you can tune in today, Monday, March 23, 2020, to watch the Instagram class at 5 pm.  For those that cannot, it should be available on his Instagram account for rebroadcast.

Yankees news/updates: Gary Sanchez avoid Corona Virus, Alex Rodrigues to buy the Mets?

New York Yankees, Gary Sanchez

Despite Opening Day just three weeks away, the New York Yankees are dwindling down to their reserves in the outfield, but that’s just the tip of the iceberg for a team that has already lost Luis Severino for the entire season, James Paxton for three months, and Aaron Judge for weeks.

Did I forget Giancarlo Stanton’s calf injury or Gary Sanchez’s stiff back after catching just two consecutive games? Sanchez is also fighting off a fever and could be tested for the Novel Corona Virus.

The MLB recently banned all media from clubhouses starting Tuesday amid the unease sprouted from the extremely contagious virus. Sanchez, who will be treated for his illness, will likely undergo testing as a precaution for the other Yankee players.

Sanchez was expected to begin hitting outdoors again on Tuesday before the Yankees faced off against the Toronto Blue Jays — he didn’t appear.

Your latest New York Yankees news/updates:

Yanks Go Yard:

Early last week Gerrit Cole also apparently had a fever but he was able to make his scheduled start on Thursday. Today he made his fourth start of the spring against the Blue Jays and looked great, striking out six over 3.1 innings of work. Could Cole be the reason why Sanchez got a fever of his own, who knows? Let’s just hope Gary can bounce back from this as quickly as his battery mate did and get back into his daily routine and continue preparing for the regular season.

Yahoo News: We should probably talk about how much the Yankees are already falling apart

The Yankees are coming off a 103-win season and subsequent megabucks acquisition of Cy Young candidate Gerrit Cole. If you stopped paying attention in December, they look unbeatable. But the last couple of weeks have seen them eroded by the incoming tide.

Two arms considered vital to their success – right-hander Luis Severino and left-hander James Paxton – carried over serious injuries from 2019 that still haven’t healed. The former needs Tommy John surgery and is done for the year. The latter underwent back surgery and won’t be available until May or more realistically June. That’s on top of 18-game winner Domingo German, who still must serve 63 games of an 81-game suspension for violating the league’s domestic violence policy last season. He won’t be eligible to return until June.

Pinstripe Alley: What we know so far about how Coronavirus is impacting MLB and the Yankees

MLB has established a task force to prepare for the virus’ potential impact on the season, ESPN’s Jeff Passan reported last week. In a memo sent to officials around the game, the league is recommending a number of precautions apparently designed to safeguard the health of players and team staff. Among the suggestions are that players should refrain from taking balls and pens from fans for the purpose of autographs. They should also avoid handshakes. Teams are also encouraged to reach out to local health officials and experts for guidance and to ensure players have received a flu vaccination.

NY Post: Alex Rodriguez talks about buying Mets with Jimmy Fallon

Host Jimmy Fallon asked the former Yankees slugger and current Fox and ESPN baseball analyst on “The Tonight Show” Monday if it was “true you are interested in buying the New York Mets.” Rodriguez went on to opine about his love for New York City and being a Mets fan growing up before giving some insight.

“I will say this, if the opportunity [to buy the Mets] came up, I would certainly look at it,” A-Rod said.

ARod Would Consider Doing a Jeter-Like Deal to Buy the Mets

New York Yankees, Alex Rodriguez

Ever since the sale of the New York Mets to billionaire hedge fund manager Steven A. Cohen fell through earlier this year, things have quieted down on that front. The Wilpons’ condition in which they would control to the team for five years after relinquishing financial control was a sticking point, along with not having SNY included, that sent Cohen packing.

Now, the Wilpons are putting the team up for sale via an auction overseen by Allen and Co. Cohen is said to be still somewhat interested and many potential suitors are shying away because he is still in the mix and can outbid them, even with SNY in play.

One individual who might put together an offer if presented in former Yankees great Alex Rodriguez. ARod could front a group of investors to make an offer very much like his former teammate Derek Jeter did with the Miami Marlins.

ARod told late night host Jimmy Fallon he’s open to such a venture.

From the NY Post:

ARoRodriguez, who flirted with playing for the Mets in 2000, jokingly offered the opportunity to Fallon, a Yankees fan. A-Rod’s fiancee Jennifer Lopez is also a known Yankees fan.

“Maybe you can buy them with me,” Rodriguez told Fallon. “I need a partner!”

ARod earned approximately $450 million during his playing days and could certainly team up with some other celebs and heavyweights to put together and offer for the Royal Blue and Orange.

But, what would the Wilpons do to sour the deal? They clearly do not want to sell but they have to. It appears they no longer have the financial bandwidth to own a team in a major market such as New York.

Alex Rodriguez is considering bidding for the New York Mets

New York Yankees, Alex Rodriguez

After the Wilpons’ failed sale of the New York Mets to Steve Cohen, many fans thought that they wouldn’t be selling anytime soon. That doesn’t appear to be the case, though.

Shortly after the deal Cohen and the Wilpons fell through, the current owners clarified that they would still consider giving up control of the team. Now, a new buying option appeared on the horizon.

According to the New York Post, which cites sources and reports, former MLB star and current baseball analyst Alex Rodriguez is interested in buying the New York Mets.

That means that the soap opera regarding the Mets’ ownership is far from over and got yet another shade of craziness to it.

“Kicking the tires” on the Mets

The Post wrote that baseball and Wall Street insiders revealed to it that A-Rod is “kicking the tires” on the idea of getting into an auction for the Mets.

Cohen backed out of the deal on the table last week upon learning that the Wilpons wouldn’t be surrendering control of the team for the first five years of his ownership. That pact was worth $2.6 billion for 80 percent of the Mets.

A potential issue is that Cohen, a noted New York Mets’ fan, isn’t giving up on his pursuit, according to sources. But A-Rod’s interest seems to be high. “He’s a businessman and a baseball man based in New York,” said one A-Rod ally. “Why wouldn’t he be looking at this?”

As it turns out, Alex Rodriguez calls himself a Mets fan growing up. His idol was Keith Hernandez. He considered signing with the team back in 2000 but his contract demands were too high for then-GM Steve Phillips.

The sources, however, still think that the odds of a purchase are low, and caution that A-Rod would need to put together a wealthy ownership group of investors, like Derek Jeter did to buy the Miami Marlins.

“[Rodriguez] genuinely loves the Mets,” said one source familiar with A-Rod. “He and J.Lo have talked about him buying a team ever since Jeter got the Marlins.”

New York Yankees: Giancarlo Stanton Expectations

Remember a couple of years ago when the New York Yankees acquired the reigning National League MVP? The guy who looked to be chiseled out of granite and he hit 59 home runs while driving in 132 runs in a pitchers ballpark. This guy was supposed to come right in and hit over 100 combined home runs with Aaron Judge, and the Yankees were supposed to walk to a World Series. Well, neither of those things happened which left many Yankees fans incredibly disappointed. Now to be fair, Giancarlo Stanton actually had a very productive first year in pinstripes hitting 38 home runs and driving in 100, but that was not the expectation from fans. The Yankees fell short against Boston in the playoffs and Stanton was mostly invisible in that series. I defended Giancarlo a lot in 2018 because it reminded me a lot of Alex Rodriguez‘ first year with the Yankees. A-Rod came to New York after winning the MVP in Texas and his numbers dipped in his first year with the Yankees. A-Rod hit 11 fewer homers and drove in 12 fewer runs while his slash line was down across the board. In his second year, A-Rod returned to form and won the MVP. That is what I was hoping to see last year from Stanton. I was hoping to see a guy who played pissed off while smashing 50 bombs and leading the Yankees to a World Series. Yeah, that didn’t happen either.

Abysmal 2019

Stanton was hurt virtually the entire season only playing in 18 total games. In those 18 games, Stanton only had 17 hits in 59 total plate appearances. Stanton injured his bicep, then he injured his shoulder, then he injured his knee. Stanton finally looked healthy when the Yankees took the field in the post season. He hit a home run in game one of the ALCS and the Yankees had the momentum. Then, like it had all season, the injury bug hit Stanton hard with a quad strain. Stanton just could not stay healthy last season and was one of the contributing factors to the Yankees not being able to overcome the Astros.

Expectations for 2020

So what should we expect this year as fans? Well I think Stanton is in the optimum position to change the minds of fans in 2020. It seems that the general consensus of Yankee fans really don’t believe in Stanton. They don’t feel that he’s made for New York and fans really aren’t expecting much. I can’t really say that I blame them. Stanton is facing the pressure of the dollar amount of his contract, but he’s not feeling the pressure from the fans expectations and I think he will show that this year. I would be shocked if Stanton made it through the entire season without a stop on the IL, but I’m expecting a big year from Giancarlo overall. My prediction for his stat line: .272 BA, 43 HRs, 108 RBIs, .352 OBP. I expect Stanton to have a huge impact on the Yankees this year, and I fully expect him to hit some shots that make fans jaws hit the ground. Would I be surprised if Stanton misses most of the season due to injuries? I suppose I wouldn’t considering what happened last year, but I’m ready to throw last year away and start fresh with my thoughts on Stanton. 2020 is the year Giancarlo Stanton shows why the Yankees went out and got him in the first place.

Yankees News/Rumors: Yankees Spring training, Granderson retires, and Are Jeter and A-Rod friends again?

New York Yankees, Alex Rodriguez

A Daily look at New York Yankee News and Rumors of interest to Yankee fans.

Pitchers and catchers report on February 13.

Pitchers and catchers report in just twelve days with the full squad reporting to spring training on February 18 at the Tampa, Florida training facility, George M. Steinbrenner Field.  Workouts will begin immediately with the first game on Saturday, February 22, at home against the Toronto Blue Jay.  In the first week, they will play the Jays, Pirates, Nationals, Tampa Bay, and the Tigers.   The Yankees will play twelve games that will be televised by the YES Network, and one game will be on ESPN.  The Yankees regular-season opener will be away at the Orioles Park at Camden Yards on March 26.

Manager Aaron Boone and the coaches will be watching closely to evaluate all the players.  Although the Yankees are relatively set in the lineup, they will be watching first base players Luke Voit and Mike Ford to see who will win out for the opening day start at first.  They will also look at the hot corner, and Gio Urshela, who they have already said will start at the hot corner, and that it is his to lose.  That being said, they will also be watching Miguel Andujar closely as they try to figure out where he will best play.  They have options, including trying him at first and in the outfield.  He, of course, will be available to play at third base.  Many that watch the televised spring training games will be looking for the Yankees to win their games, but that is not the primary objective.  Preparing players for opening day is tantamount when the games count.

Curtis Granderson retires!

Curtis Granderson was a beloved Yankee on and off the field.  He was the Yankees ambassador here and around the world.  Curtis loves baseball and has promoted it everywhere.  He has traveled to England, Italy, the Netherlands, France, South Africa, China, New Zealand, South Korea, and Japan to promote baseball.  He has worked tirelessly to support inner-city black children through his Grand Kids Foundation.  Yesterday he announced the end of his 16-year baseball career as he retired from the game.  He played the bulk of his career with the Tigers, the New York Yankees and the Mets.  In his later years, he played a year for the Dodgers, Blue Jays, Brewers, and finally, last year in the minors for the Marlins.

In announcing his retirement, he said in part: “As I close out this wonderful chapter in my life and step away from the days on the field, I know that my role in this game is only just getting started. I look forward to continuing my work helping to diversify the sport, paving the way for young kids to learn and grow. Thank you — to the MLB, MLBPA, my teammates and coaches, front office staff, members of the media, partners, and the fans — for the ride of a lifetime.  This journey would not be possible without those who came before me, breaking barriers to allow a young Curtis Granderson to live out his dream. It’s been an honor to wear my socks high.”

Have A-Rod and Jeter patched things up?

As many of you may know, Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez have been on and off friends, both on the field and off.   First, here is the back story.  Both Jeter and A-Rod were superstar shortstops, one for the New York Yankees and other for the Seattle Mariners.  In many ways, their careers had many parallels at the start.  Before their debuts in the majors, they both met for the first time in 1993 at a college baseball game between the University of Michigan (Jeter went to high school in Kalamazoo) and the University of Miami (Rodriguez went to high school in Miami).  They were somewhat fascinated with each other.

They broke through and became superstars in 1996 and 97 and were featured together on the cover of Sports Illustrated.  They became inseparable and great friends.  As time passed, Jeter, because of playing in New York and not Seattle, was getting all the attention, especially with his string of girls following him.  Apparently, A-Rod started to become jealous as he wasn’t getting the attention he thought he should be getting.   Their relationship started to become strained.  For the next several years, their relationship would be best called a roller coaster.  After having huge years with the Texas Rangers, A-Rod would go to the Yankees who would take on his $252MM contract, but again he would be overshadowed by Jeter when he had to relinquish his position at short to Jeter, moving to third base.  In an interview with ESPN, A-Rod said: “He just doesn’t do the power numbers,” in reference to why he deserved a more significant contract than Jeter.

In 2001 A-Rod offered to Esquire Magazine: “The thing about Mike Lupica (Lupica writes the “Sporting Life” for Esquire) that pisses me off,” he says, “is that he makes me look like the biggest dickhead in the world, and then he takes a guy like Jeter and just puts him way up there.” “Jeter’s been blessed with great talent around him,” Alex said. “He’s never had to lead. He can just go and play and have fun. And he hits second — that’s totally different than third and fourth in a lineup. You go into New York, you wanna stop Bernie and O’Neill. You never say, Don’t let Derek beat you. He’s never your concern.” From here on, their relationship was pretty much like toast, even if it didn’t appear that way on the field.

In 2007, Rodriguez admitted that his relationship with his old best friend wasn’t what it used to be. “People start assuming that things are a lot worse than what they are, which they’re not,” Rodriguez said. “But they’re obviously not as great as they used to be. We were like blood brothers.” Since both have retired, many things have changed.  Jeter went on to marry his wife Hannah, a model, the pair have two children, and Jeter became part-owner of the lowly Florida Marlins.

A-Rod became a successful broadcaster and is engaged to be married to one of the most beautiful and talented women in the world, Jennifer Lopez. On Wednesday night in Miami, Jeter and A-Rod would be seen together at Rao’s at the beach. Rao’s is a restaurant notorious for not being able to get a table unless you know someone.  The restaurant is charging $10k for a table of six this week during the Superbowl.  Jeter, who is now 45, was seated having dinner with friends, and A-Rod, who is now 44, walked up.   Page six was told the two sluggers “engaged in quite the friendly conversation” for about five minutes at the beachside restaurant. Apparently, time heals old-time jealousy and wounds.

Why Should New York Yankees Fans Treat A-Rod Better?

There’s a growing trend among New York Yankees fans. The trend is Alex Rodriguez deserves better treatment after the “years of mistreatment” from fans when he was a player.

I’m sorry, are we forgetting just HOW his last few years as a Yankee unfolded?

Remember how he sued the Yankees?

After getting caught in the Biogenesis scandal, A-Rod was facing a 162-211 game suspension for his involvement. During the appeal of MLB’s initial ruling, A-Rod sued the New York Yankees team doctor, and team hospital (New York Presbyterian) for misdiagnosing the hip injury that resulted in him missing most of the 2013 season. Part of the suit alleges:

Defendants, after performing, understanding and analyzing the MRI, had diagnosed Plantiff as suffering from a superior labral tear at the left hip; and without informing the plaintiff of the diagnosis, knowingly cleared the Plaintiff to resume playing as a third baseman for the New York Yankees during the [2012] season playoffs, thus allowing the Plaintiff to further injure himself and the necessity for additional surgeries.

Now, while the Yankees as an organization weren’t specifically named, A-Rod is trying to throw someone who looks after the ENTIRE TEAM under the bus. I mean, this is the guy who ultimately brought Mariano Rivera AND Derek Jeter back for their final seasons. Why would the Yankees keep someone around who didn’t have the best interest of every member of the team in their best interest, including Alex Rodriguez?

A-Rod was like Gerrit Cole

A-Rod wasn’t brought to New York to win more MVP’s than championship’s, he was brought them to bring more championships to the 96-00 totals. And he only brought in 1 extra championship. He was touted as someone who would win the team multiple championships. But when it came down to winning those championship’s, A-Rod was nowhere to be found. As a Mariner, A-Rod was 18-53, good for a .339 postseason average.

As a Yankee, A-Rod had only 3 series out of 14 playoff appearances with a batting average of .270 and lower. The man finished with a career postseason batting average of .259, and 41 RBI’s, over the span of 19 postseasons series/appearances (his last postseason appearance was the 2015 Wild Card game going 0-4). Specifically as a Yankee, though, he went 54-205, good for a .263 batting average as a Yankee. This isn’t the stuff that brings home the gold.

Is Gerrit Cole doomed to A-Rod’s fate?

If Cole win’s a couple Cy Young’s, and an MVP, it’s not why he was brought to the Yankees. He’s bringing brought to New York to win multiple World Series championships. So, unless Cole decides “The pressure is too much, I need to take steroids,” like Alex did multiple times, Cole is doomed to be treated just as harshly as A-Rod was. But can you really blame Yankee fans? We were promised something from A-Rod, and he failed to deliver. We’re promised the same thing from Gerrit.

And before you start with “Oh, baseball’s a team sport! It’s about the contributions from all 9 (in the American League it’s 10 with the DH) guys on the field!” stop and think about this:

A-Rod has a career 117.8 WAR, with a .295 career batting average in the regular season, as well as over 3,000 hits, at over 660 home runs. Derek Jeter had a WAR of 72.4, with a career .310 regular-season batting average, with 260 career home runs, and finishing in the top 10 of hits for his career. I’ve posted A-Rod’s postseason stats. Jeter’s were .308 with more home runs and more RBI’s in the postseason than A-Rod’s. By EVERY metric, Jeter shouldn’t be outperforming A-Rod in the postseason. They were both paid to slow the game down and win when it mattered most. But A-Rod, when the lights shone brightest, couldn’t do it, and Jeter could. Why should we treat A-Rod better than we treat Jeter when Jeter actually got the job done?

New York Mets: The “Bombshell Candidate”

Drama and the New York Mets go together like peanut butter and jelly. As the Mets narrowed down their managerial search down to four, a source connected to the organization said a “bombshell candidate” could be in play should the Mets feel none of the final four are worth hiring.

This leaves a realm of possibilities for who this mystery candidate is. The first name that comes to mind is Jessica Mendoza. She spent the 2019 season working in the organization and it would be no surprise to see Brodie Van Wagenen make a move like this. Mendoza would also have the least control out of all the candidates and cause a real stir around the baseball world.

Terry Collins Busy?

Terry Collins is another person who spend the last year working with the Mets. Two years removed from managing the Mets, he was the last manager to bring the Mets to the World Series. With the Mets moving towards an analytic driven decision maker, it will push Collins away from managing again.

A-Rod in Mets Pinstripes?

This might be the biggest longshot out everyone. Though he grew up a Mets fan, he would be forced to give up his luxurious life to spend long hours managing. He knows the game inside and out, but he will come at a very expensive price. Plus, Rodriguez would be nearly impossible to control.

The last person on my list of mystery candidates is the general manager himself. Van Wagenen seemed to control a majority of Mickey Callaway’s moves, so why not step into the dugout himself. He would have to face the fire instead of using some else as a human shield for his boneheaded decisions.

Purely Speculation

All of these names are hypotheticals. These are the best guesses I could make based on the extremely limited information we all have. It would be in the best interests of the Mets to hire one of the four candidates they brought in. Preferably, Joe Girardi.

This Day in Yankees History: A-Rod Announces Retirement

New York Yankees’ slugger Alex Rodriguez was with the club for 12 seasons before he decided to announce his retirement from Major League Baseball on August 7th, 2016. He met with media that day where he said, “I love this game, and I love this team. Today, I’m saying goodbye to both. I never thought I could play for 22 years.”

Struggling to say these words as he was fighting back tears, you could see how much A-Rod loved playing in the Bronx. It was always believed that when he was apart of the Rangers and Mariners, Rodriguez wanted to be in pinstripes playing with his close pal Derek Jeter and the rest of that legendary squad.

Rodriguez was a 14-time All-Star, six of those selections representing the New York Yankees. He won the MVP award three times (2003, 2005, 2007), twice as a Yank. A-Rod won one World Series ring with the Yankees during the 2009 magical season.

Statistically, A-Rod goes down as one of the best players in baseball history and definitely Yankee history. However, many baseball fans will argue that. With his run-in with Performance-enhancing drugs, his 696 home runs and 3115 hits are overlooked. Another thing to note about Rodriguez’s ignorance of the MLB drug policy, it will most likely prevent him from entering the Baseball Hall of Fame.

Regardless of the decisions he made, Alex Rodriguez is one of the best to ever wear pinstripes and to walk on a ball field. A-Rod is still around the game, however, and continues his career with broadcasting Sunday night baseball for ESPN.

New York Yankees could target Trevor Bauer before trade deadline

The New York Yankees are looking into Cleveland Indians pitcher, Trevor Bauer.

One former New York Yankees player believes Trevor Bauer is an attractive trade target:

If it was up to former New York Yankees third baseman, Alex Rodriguez would be all in on Cleveland Indians ace, Trevor Bauer. The Yankees trade target had a mental meltdown against the Kansas City Royals after allowing eight runs, seven earned.

Before Bauer was taken out of the game by manager Terry Francona, he launched a ball from the pitching mound over the wall in center field. It was certainly a testament to his arm strength, but the passion and anger could be viewed in two different perspectives.

On one side, Bauer could have been viewed as aggressive and radical, on the other, a passionate player that was simply disappointed with his performance.

Given his 3.79 ERA after giving up seven runs, there’s little doubt that he was not pleased with his execution. Rodriguez comments on his anger, which he spins into a positive:

“Here’s the bottom line,” Rodriguez said. “Curt Schilling was one of the best pitchers I’ve ever faced and [he] won multiple championships. Whether you like Curt Schilling or not, he was a tremendous big-game pitcher. So was David Wells. So was [Orlando] ‘El Duque’ Hernandez. Do you want Barry Bonds in your lineup? I like him. Other teams don’t like him. Do you like him?

“At 7:05, when that game starts, you win with great players. You want nice people? Go pick your friends off the field.”

After chucking the ball about 350 feet, A-Rod expressed his desire for the Yankees or any given team to pursue him even further.

“If he was on my radar before he chucked the ball over the center-field wall, he’s going to continue to be,” said Rodriguez, who noted it was a “heck of a throw.”

[su_posts template=”templates/teaser-loop.php” posts_per_page=”3″ tax_term=”1622326″ order=”desc”]

With the Bombers in dire need of starting pitchers, Bauer could be a perfect fit. The bright lights of New York and expectation would allow him to thrive in a competitive nature. With CC Sabathia going down with right knee inflammation, the July 31 trade deadline is becoming more important by the minute.
